IT is a mess, but I live in town, so minimal damage as yet. Spent the day wandering the neighborhood clearing storm drains so the rivers of water would go to the largest body of water nearby instead of basements. The storm, or at least the low is heading east and should be making the midwest and Rockies a real fun place to be in the coming days. clay On 3 Dec 2007, at 18:17, Rick Knoble wrote: Hope all you guys in the Northwest are okay http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314821,00.html Rick Knoble '85 300 CD '87 190 DT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I know I was buying it in 1987 or so, but I think it was fairly new then. Marshall was exceptionally vocal on KN air filters being unnecessary (and less efficient) because of the excess air flow designed into our diesels. He had a point, for two reasons. 1. Marshall always said time yourself 0-62, then pull the air filter and do it again. If there's no change, quit thinking about reducing AF restriction to increase performance. 2. Every objective test I've seen (usually in the 4x4 magazines) has the KN flowing more dirt than the factory filter element. Re: [MBZ] marshall booth photo
Ya know, for all we joke about the man (and he was indeed a living parody of himself), he was really a valuable resource. I think he had a photographic memory and retained much of what he read in the manuals. I should be so lucky -- I stick post-it notes to my computer monitor at work on Friday afternoons so I know what to do the following Monday morning. Only once did he tell me he had to research the answer to a question, but he fired the answer back in a very timely manner (after consulting the manuals). In one of my last off-list emails to him, not long before the end, I asked if we could perhaps dump his brain to DVD. He seemed to get a chuckle out of that and said that he'd unfortunately under-lived that technology but wished he could. Looking back at his obit, I realized that he worked at a theater place in DC that I passed every day going to and from work. Wish I'd known then what I knew now, for I could have easily pulled into the parking lot and had a chat with him about the car I'd own a decade in the future. Sorry, a Dr. Who moment there. D. KN air filters being unnecessary (and less efficient) because of the excess air flow designed into our diesels. There was a KN air filter in my first '78 300D. I pulled it out totally covered with oil. I wasn't sure if it was oil misted by blowby or overoiled in the first place, but I later found out that it was overoiling. Nothing came out of the engine during the oil cap test. I took it to a shop and had the valves adjusted, and this was before I knew about warm versus cold engine valve adjustments. They did it after we drove the car 10 miles to their shop which is not nearly ideal (found this out when it wouldn't start the minute the temps dipped into the 30's). We got battered with lots of heavy rain and high winds, but the 300SD is still in the driveway. There was flooding all around us, and the high winds left quite a few coastal residents without power. Personal experience - I ended up giving away a nice unit because I never used it - it used arms and legs [in ways not appropriate for me] and my darling wife banished it to the un-airconditioned back porch. I finally bought a decent treadmill for our bedroom. TV to watch, fans and AC in the room. I walk 2 miles six days a week with very few exceptions. Your NY life was much more entertaining then mine. I first worked as an electrician for M.Altman, Inc in the Bronx and then for Metropolitan Hospital on 1st in Manhattan. My mother-in -law was a sculptor and my father in law a chemist at Kodak in Manhattan My brother in law became a NY State Superior Court Judge. I ate/drank frequently at an Irish pub (the name escapes me) at the corner of Roosevelt and Main, right near the subway entrance stairs. Spent most of my free time in the village around Washington Park. I seem to recall that XKE I drove either a Porsche or a Renault as my personal cars and a Chevy Vega wagon as a company car while working for M. Altman, Inc.. Now you live in GA and I in SC (they can call us damn Yankees all they want no one can ever say we are dumb Yanks LOL) Small world after all isn't it. Re: [MBZ] No boost in '91 300d
Howdy - My '91 300D 2.5T recently had a problem where the turbo did not work properly, if at all. I had replaced the passenger side headlight and when moving things around to change the light I detached a small hose that comes off the vacuum pump and goes into a small rubber hose about 2 long. It comes out of the pump at the 12 o'clock position and just pushes onto the fitting. It may be partially hidden by the upper radiator hose. Along with the Turbo problem, the transmission also shifted much more firmly than before. It had always shifted very smoothly - it was hard to even notice when it shifted unless paying close attention. With that vacuum hose disconnected it shifted with a firm jolt. Once I located it fixing it was only a matter of seconds. If the EGR doesn't work correctly, the computer will dump the turbo. Ditto for the intake resonance flaps, if they don't move properly, the computer dumps the boost. If the vac lines are BBed, there's the main reason you don't have boost. Take the BBs out, check all the lines to make sure they hold vac, and verify that the switchover valves (transducers) for the flaps, the turbo, and the EGR are OK, and that the servos for the turbo wastegate actuator and the flaps are OK and working. Verifty that the EGR valve operates correctly with vacuum, and remove the plate. Likely you will find a bad transducer or two (turbo and EGR, maybe the intake flap one) or a bad servo. You can only bypass the computer by replacing the turbo with a mechanically controlled one, and I'm not sure that will work well as the intake flaps still won't work right. What I know: - Tracing vacuum diagrams I found that the EGR and recirc flap control have already been BB'ed at the vacuum source - Turbo seems to turn freely. Some oil in the intake but nothing big. - Putting pressure gauge in line between intake and ALDA see about 3 PSI, max. - With pressure to ALDA on acceleration (5-10 PSI) there isn't a jump in power from expected fuel enrichment - Putting a line direct from intake to ALDA doesn't help (something that worked on another car) - Applying pressure to the ALDA shows minimal leakage - EGR has a plate covering the port - Turbo overpressure rod moves freely - Car doe not appear to have a cat/trap in the exhaust system - OVP is OK This car has a LOT more going on than the last car I had a no-boost problem with. On that, a 300sdl, jumping a failed switchover valve fixed it. This car has at least 2 more vacuum/pressure control pots, a mass air flow sensor, and a boost sensor near the battery. I'm not familiar with any of these, and the service CD's are at best spotty with coverage. My questions: - With the added systems is there an electrical element added to the injection pump that would prevent enrichment when jumpering the intake to ALDA? - Does anyone have a used Garrett TB025 turbo if mine proves bad - Anywhere else I should be looking? Re: [MBZ] Winter Weather
I'm sure you've gotten lots of advice on this one, but my $0.02. #1 Your car should start fine at that temp. Does it turn over fast like it normally would or did the battery run down quickly? One year I fought my 240D through almost a whole winter before I finally replaced the battery and brought it back to its old easy cold start self. This year with my 190D I replaced the battery the first time it let me down. #2 0w30 is absolutely the wrong oil for your car. You've got 3 basic Mobil 1 choices, 0w40, 15w50 and 5w40. I've listed those in my increasing order of preference. Meaning I like 5w40 the best and 0w40 the least. 0w40 will work but the engine will be louder and will probably leak worse. Your car WILL start easier with any of the Mobil 1 oils, even 15w50 so don't be afraid of using it. The big question in my mind is how cold do you expect it to get? If you're looking at extended time below or around 0F I'd get the 5w40. If you're likely to only get into the teens then just stick with the block heater. If you do go to Mobil 1 (please if you go synthetic go Mobil 1, Amsoil or Redline, ignore the false synthetics like Syntec) get a set of oil analysis kits from LarryT (www.youroil.net) so you'll know when to change it. In a 617 unless you drive alot of highway miles I'd guess you're only going to get 6,000-7,000 miles on a change. Changing the oil earlier to get the dirt out sooner doesn't really make much sense, the dirt should be in the filter, thats where it belongs. There have been LOTS of studies on long oil changes, its really not something to be afraid of. Anyway out of everything I'd be enclined to look at your battery before I did anything else. -Curt Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 17:21:48 -0800 (PST) From: EDWARD DENNIS [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Winter Weather To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Hi all, May I ask a Winter start question? Re: [MBZ] No boost in '91 300d
Tony, Marshall (MHRIP) would have told you to not assume the transmission is bad until you have the engine performing as designed. The power produced by the engine will affect the position of the throttle, hence the shifting firmness and also the shift timing. Some time in the 90s, it became a no-no to tamper with the EGR on the turbo diesels as the computer would know, and lock out the boost, or fuel, somehow. Basically go into non boosted configuration. You should pin that down! Did you change all the fuel filters? Also try driving without the fuel filler cap on the tank, in case it is not venting properly. I have a very nice Garrett from an 87 603 engine, but it is marked TBO 359. Photos available. $275, no core required. Regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 152 K miles Jim, I've been playing with this car for about a week here and there, and ya know after being on this and the R/E list for some time now I've caught myself thinking a bunch of times don't assume; think it through- what would Marshall say here with what I have (or DON'T have) in front of me? Last weekend when I was playing with this the thought came to mind that Marshall would know what to do here, and I instinctively thought to post and ask. But since we haven't heard much, I assumed that he was dealing with something more important with some sense that it wasn't good. But we have his example of being a teacher, of methodically assessing and evaluating a problem to a logical conclusion, at least most of the time. And we will still miss him. Anyway, on the transmission: There can be 4-5 seconds delay to get to reverse, and even then I've sensed a slight slip once. When in drive I don't get the slamming I think I should with the vacuum disconnected- shifts are firmer, but probably not as firm as they should be. Also the info I have is that at 305k miles the transmission has never been out of the car. Re: [MBZ] No boost in '91 300d
No, its not fuel enrichment it adjusts, its the boost. With no vacuum the turbo defaults to NO boost. You have to have full vacuum to the turbo to get boost. When everything is not like it should be, the turbo vents vacuum so you get no boost. No boost equals no fuel enrichment. You could just run a vacuum line straight to the turbo, but you would not have any overboost protection or anything. Very dangerous. --- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Oil clarification
The subject of Mobil 1 becoming a crappy semi-synthetic has come up on a couple groups I read (here too maybe 8 months ago?) so I emailed Mobil and did ALOT of searches. Mobil of course says they are not and its actually in the FAQs on their website. I could find NO substantiated information anywhere on the web just I heard. So if your mother's brother's cousin's hairdresser's mechanic told her then give us the whole scoop. -Curt Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2007 10:01:08 -0600 From: John Robbins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Oil clarification To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Curt Raymond wrote: Unfortunately with no Marshall I have no idea how to get a line to the Mobil tribologists to find out if its appropriate for our cars. I think Dave M. is now the Mobil 1 expert (he's recently been in touch with their people about their new ATF formula)... I think he's unsubbed from this list quite a while ago, and now hangs out mostly in forums. FWIW, I have heard him mention Mobil moving to use Group III base stock in some of their synthetic oils (I do not know which ones though, or if it is even an engine oil) to stay competitive. However, I do know that Delvac 1 (AKA Turbo Diesel Truck) is a full Group IV synthetic. John - Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! yes, no shortage of irish pubs to eat and drink at in new york. my dad hated anything to do with alchohol, but he still visited the irish pubs for corned beef. i spent a fair amount of time around washington square park. back in my day, union square and tompkins square parks were too dangerous for anyone to go too, but somehow washington square, while still chock full of crime, was still considered ok. remember the fancy town houses across the street on the north end of the park with that ancient little alley behind them? i always thought that would be a pretty crappy place to live as you had to deal with the dregs from the park right outside your door 24/7. I shudder to think what those houses are worth today. what was the main street going to the east from there? was it east 8th street? went to st mark's place. i guess that was the main area of manhattan i spent time at. no irish bars with good food, but rather ukranian bars with no food but good characters. You have to have full vacuum to the turbo to get boost. When everything is not like it should be, the turbo vents vacuum so you get no boost. No boost equals no fuel enrichment. [MBZ] follow up to my pleasant retail experience
as you may recall, last thursday night i used poker codes to order speakers and an ipod from onecall.com. well, if they are trying to impress me, they sure as hell have as the fedex guy just showed up at my door with them. turns out to be a place in spokane called huppins. from spokane to atlanta with free shipping from 7pm on thursday until 2pm monday is pretty darn impressive to me. as these items were essentially gifts, i do not really have any reason to comparison shop, so i really can't comment on their prices, but the ordering process and delivery have been most impressive. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

You assume that website is updated. I haven't seen with supersyn on a Mobil 1 bottle in awhile, at least not for 15w50... I've also NEVER seen the 5w50, there are lots of oils on that list that are not available in the US. -Curt Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2007 11:13:58 -0500 From: Allan Streib [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Oil clarification To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii John Robbins [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I think Dave M. is now the Mobil 1 expert (he's recently been in touch with their people about their new ATF formula)... I believe with supersyn proceeded the TriSyn, which was the first one to blend in group III stock with the IV/V. I put my last 5 qts of supersyn 15W50 in the 16v last weekend. Price tag on the bottle was $18.88. I'd be happy if I could get the TriSyn M1 for $19 a jug today.
