[MBZ] OT Movie Content and Society - was Star Wars - was gasser mills in oil burners

2008-02-12 Thread Zoltan Finks
So Natalie Portman? I am almost totally illiterate in terms of movies - and
most pop media.
But I agreed to go with the wife to a movie showing at the cute little
historic theater here in town. It was called The Darjeeling Limited.
Before the main movie, a short film showed that was by the same author
(director, producer, whatever). This short starred Natalie and one of the
male characters from the main movie. All I can really tell you is that that
chick is a sight to behold naked. And I'm not talking your standard naked -
I'm talking porn naked.

There were elderly folks and young people in that theater. Real interesting
to see where society is going what with this stuff being mainstream now.

Fisher wasn't bad looking in Star Wars, but her face was already
starting to look old by the time they filmed Return of the Jedi.
I always wondered how much Coke she inhaled in those six years.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Tom Hargrave
Free shipping is based on order amount because free shipping is used
to motivate customers to buy more. It's the same with my business. I
offer $10 off any order $125 and up or $25 off any order $250 and up.
And because of these specials, the majority of my orders fall into the
$125 - $150 and $250 - $300 ranges.

I used to do the same with orders to Rusty when the 300SDL was my main
driver. I'd order parts and would add in oil fuel filters to reach the
free shipping point. This really is the best way to order from Rusty
anyway, regardless of who is really paying for shipping. Once you pay to
ship the part you need, you pay very little extra to throw in a few
filters and a can of diesel purge.

Tom,

You are right on target! Remember TANSTAAFL?

Free is one of the most overused terms in all advertising! The
more appropriate statement would be Orders over $99 shipped at no
direct charge to you. We all should know that those $'s are
somewhere in the cost of doing business and incorporated into mark
up.

Personally, I would rather just pay the product price plus the going
UPS/USPS/FedEx shipping cost.

As a business owner, I certainly would want to know how much my free
shipping costs are (% of total $'s of orders over $99) and spread
that cost when pricing my products.

One more thought - Actual shipping costs are based on weight and
volume (size of box). Why is free shipping based on order amount?
Just an inquiring mind!

Take care,

Chuck

In my quest to replace my aging Dakota (211,000 miles and rust) I came across
an '87 K5 Blazer with a mere 89,000 miles.
Checking fueleconomy.gov its only about 1mpg worse on the highway than my
Dakota...
Boy I like the old body style Blazers, big and confortable. Good in the woods,
not bad on the road and really not all that bad on gas all things considered.
That and a bigger snowmobile trailer might be a good fit for my needs for
relatively little money.

I had a 350 with TBI in my 87 4x4 Blazer with 4spd 700R4, it was OK,
kinda agricultural but solid and you can get parts at the 7-11. When
that started burning oil I had an old guy (in his 80s now, complaining
but still doing engine work, built AJFoyt's first race engine back
 when)
build me up a 350 -- he put on Vortec heads (they flow better,
 aluminum)
and an Edelbrock intake, ZZ4 cam and some other stuff, but we used the
TBI on it. It never did run right -- I think the cam/heads are not
 well
matched to what the old TBI computer can do. I found a laptop program
and made up a cable to watch the computer, it looked like everything
 was
fine but it runs rich. Wouldn't pass emissions (at the legit places)
 so
I sorta retired it. I still have that truck, been trying to sell it
 but
body is rusted and no one will pay for the engine/drivetrain which is
quite solid, so I might strip it down, keep the good bits, and scrap
 the
rest. It would run well with a 4bbl or a newer FI set up, but the 4bbl

won't pass inspection and a new FI is pricey. Before I had him do
 mine,
I drove a truck he had just built/put a 350 in, that thing about scared

the scheiss out of me. I punched it going about 60, tranny downshifted

and the rear tires screeched and let go, I backed off then and said
good enough for me.

I have my dad's 96 Chevy truck now, with the 305. He got the smaller
engine when he bought it thinking it would be easier on gas, but there
is really no difference between it, my old Blazer, and the 2000 Burb
with the 5.3. The 305 is same as 350 with just different stroke I
 think.

While talking (e-mailing) about cars and motorcycles on Joe Amelia's
SL list - years ago - a Dr. reminded us of the old saying - a
motorcycle is flesh around metal, while a car is metal around flesh.
He also remarked about being the track Dr. somewhere in the NE - and
finding the remains of a motorcycle rider - fully armored body on one
side, and helmeted head on the other side of a tree.

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
Gotta put in a BuyMBParts plug here.

I occasionally (normally?) buy just what I need. Last time, it was four glow
plugs.

I simply asked Rusty on the phone to ship cheapest possible means, and he
dropped them (or someone dropped them) into a padded envelope and sent them
to me 1st class mail. ... $3 shipping vs. arm/leg UPS charges.

Service like this you can't put a price tag on. I think the MBA word for it
is Good Will.

I dropped a guy a note today on the 560SEL I mentioned in an early post.
Wished him luck in getting his price, but if not, keep my email and drop me
a line in a month or two. I'm not very good at haggling, and I'd rather
just let people figure out for themselves when they're asking too much. I
left the door open for him to adjust his price.

I haven't gotten to that point yet. It's exciting enough just flying it.

I think that the photography would rather easy though. There are no
windows to open and the sides are right down at my waist, so there is
the calm feeling of being cradled inside something (just in case one was
to be inclined toward agoraphobia or some such odd affliction) yet there
is the freedom to lean over and look straight down if you are too lazy
to pull it up onto one wing and just look straight down that way. Much
more fun than one of those enclosed planes, though not quite as fast by
a long shot. :-)

Free shipping is based on order amount because free shipping is used
to motivate customers to buy more. It's the same with my business. I

  Take care,

  Chuck

Re: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

2008-02-12 Thread andrew strasfogel
I guess Rusty could defeat the $75.01 game by lowering his prices so much
that it would be almost impossible to assemble an order costing more than
$75.00, thus requiring value shoppers to pay a hated shipping charge.
Diabolical!!

On Feb 12, 2008 2:11 PM, Tom Hargrave [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Subject: [MBZ] OT Free Shipping?

 Take care,

 Chuck

On my 111 coupe the new headliner involved removing front and rear glass
plus the wood in front, plus 20 hours skilled labor, then reinsertion of
 the
glass front and rear by an expert, and finally the nerve-wracking
re-installation of the bowed wood w/s pieces and rear view mirror. I

Yes, they love to do that. Or better yet, they tend to send a body molding
clip in a coffin sized box. I think that someone at Mercedes has a family

Hi Donald,
Are the 305/350 engines derivitives of the 283 that Chevy released
in
the mid 50s? I always heard good things about that engine. As I wrote
earlier, the 305 in my 78 Malibu was an awesome engine that was
embarassed
by its (multiple) autmatic transmissions. The dealer put 2 replacement
Jasper ATs in under warranty (I'm *so* happy * bought the used car
warranty!) and both failed early IMO - even though I maintained it as
per
the manual. When the AT was working properly it was an awesome car -
very
quiet, smooth and responsive. Of course, when compared to my 69 280S
there
was little difference in the feeling of having a proper ride.

The MB did something I've only seen in MBs (all my MBs) - at about
80mph
they seem to hunker down and the suspension become supple and firm at
the
same time. Expansion strips in the interstate disappear and wind noise
even
reduces. I guess it's the sweet spot -

The Chevy's shortcomings were the interior trim which seemed to be
made
as cheap as humanly possible.Even things like the fasteners holding
wiring and plumbing in place were cheap and as such failed to stay
*tightly*
connected. Little things like that turned me off the Chevy although I
would
like to try a mid 90s Impala SS, a new Impala, Ford Crown Vic or better
yet,
one of the Mustang Bullit specials. I predict some people will put them
away
for 20 or 30 years then put them up for auction at Barrett Jackson and
make
a bundle. Personally, I'd rather enjoy it.

The old small block was a workhorse, but the newer balanced engines
were
for superior for fuel injection, the use of and harmonic balancing.
The
newer engines also developed more power with better fuel economy.
Now,
the 350 that was fuel injected in 87 is an awesome engine. But, 1988
represented a watershed year for GM becuasue of the development of the

 newer engines.

Until the design of the 3800 V6, the 307 (Y code) engine and the 305

(made by chevy) was, in my opinion the best engines GM made UNTIL the
 design of the 3800 V6.

OK - you've widened my horizons - now I have more planes to sort
through. Photography is the driving force for my renewed interest in
flying. Low, Slow, and open are the main criteria. Last time I was PIC

Would ultimately like to do that. As I said, the carpet is getting a bit crispy.

Going off on a tangent, are the interior upholstery pieces available
individually or just as the whole set? I
wonder what color match would be like with old stuff. I have a hole in the seat
on the driver side base because the
horsehair pad wore out and the previous owners didn't do anything to protect
the cover from the springs. I have
since repaired the base with the means shown on one of the websites but did not
try to repair the small hole.
