Striplin, Okiebenz Sent: Sunday, June 08, 2008 8:59 PM To: mercedes Mailing List Subject: [MBZ] I just burn up $200 worth of diesel for a wild goose chase I just got back from KC to pick up a 86 190D. Supposedly ran, but possible bad trans, body and interior in good shape. I get there, only to not be able to find the house because its in the boonies and not marked. I find what I suspect is the right driveway and try to call the people. (not going to go down some wierd driveway that I dont know what is down there). Cant get ahold of them. They guy comes by going to that driveway and I ask him if he knows where these people are, he doesnt. They finally call me back, and its the right drive. Huh, why didnt this guy who was going to their house put 2 and 2 together. So this wife is doing the selling of the car. The husband does not appear to know anything about anything. She was out of town. So he takes me down to where the car is (which I think was his fathers land) to see the car. We go past what I assume was his fathers house to get to the car, there was a truck in the drive which I later assumed was his fathers truck. More about that later. So I get to the car and discover its actually a 85, not an 86. I also discover it has huge rust holes where the jack points should be. Large rats nest under the hood, and will probalby need rewiring like I just went thru on my other 190D. So I tell the old boy that the car is not as described so my orginal offer would be lowered by x amount of dollars. He says its his fathers car and his father said to sell it for x amount (which I offered before). He said I drove all that way yada yada yada, I guess he figured I would just pay anyway and not go home empty handed. I then ask about the key, which was not in the car. I said I had a battery with me could see if it ran like they said it was supposed to. He didnt know anything about the key. He says call wife, I call her, she didnt know anything about the key either, but will call the father in law. Keep in mind we just past was I assume the fathers house. They cant get ahold of him. So, I told the guy (kid really), well I have wasted enough of my time and money on this trip, sorry it didnt work out and left. Fathers truck was not at the house anymore. you would think knowing I was showing up to get the car all these dumb asses would have got their crap together. If htye had a key, surely I would have made some kind of deal with them. I guess I learned my lesson, next time investigate more before going on a car buying trip. I should have known days ago, in emailing the wife about the car she said father in law knew more about it and she should have him call me. He never did. Oh well. 2nd bad car deal I have had this weekend. Went to the auction Saturday and bid and won a 93 chevy 3500 crew cab diesel for a fairly good deal. Was kind of beat up but would have made a good beater truck. $1400. Was sold with a phone call meaning it didnt meat the selling dealers reserve, so after the bidding they call the seller to see if they will take it or what. Nope, they wanted 3k for it. WAY too much. I passed. Waisted the whole damn weekend chasing my tail. Win some, loose some. Guess Im getting paybacks for that super deal I got on that wagon last week with the #17 head. -- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Driving adventures
WWM has always had a good reputation as long as I've known them. The week I got out of trade school I interviewed at WWM in Indianapolis. I still remember the service manager taking me on a tour of their shop - I was probably drooling at the surgical cleanliness of it. I was all ready to sign on until he told me it was a flat rate shop and that I would probably be doing warranty work for the first year or two (forget that - you can't make a living doing warranty work in a flat rate shop!) So I left and took a job with a generator company. And the rest is history. Dan Peter Frederick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So I called my mechanic friend, who had me call Worldwide Auto (the Indianapolis dealer), who, after some begging and mentioning that I had my 84 year old mother with me, got me in and replaced the flex disk by closing time. I'd have been better off to call the emergency number, I'll do that in the future, as I wouldn't have had to pay $85 for a tow, but all is well. $308 and some change for the repair, not too bad for getting the car running again, although it did mean I didn't get to Detroit until 11:30 pm instead of 5 pm as the original plan, but hey. Only charged me $76 for the flex disk, so I'll happily pay the $210 in labor, which is probably excessive, but they did take care of me. Nice shop, told me I needed to replace the ball joints and the sway bar bushings, so they checked it out pretty well, I cannot complain. They would have replaced the ball joints too, except there wasn't time. Not all dealers are pirates, I guess -- this is a vastly better experience than I've had at my home dealer --- I'd not take a dead dog to them to bury, they'd screw that up too! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Hear hear! Idiots like Brittany Spears have done more to damaged the good name of marriage than all the gay people that ever lived. How about a 2 time loser law, if you can't pick the right one once out of 2 times you CAN NOT get married again. if you get laid off because the Government has fallen asleep at the wheel, watch out. Just one more incentive to get back off the dole. This is Gmail's version of a header for this email - says 9:08 instead of 8:08. There is no possible comparison of times if there is no time zone associated with it. K'leb may have sent his mail at 8:08 local time, but my mailer claims that it was sent at 7:08 PDT. Exactly right. You can't sort on date/time unless you know where that timestamp originated, so if it's unmarked at point of origin then all bets are off. Re: [MBZ] Wrong
Jim, your Windows time / date stamp info is old. For quite a while, Windows has used the same system as Unix to set email time / date stamps. This problem manifests itself in one of 2 ways: The sender's computer is not set to auto-adjust for daylight savings time. The user manually adjusted the clock to the correct time during the time shift, moving GMT off one hour. And since all calculations reach back to GMT, the outbound email is off by one hour. The receiver's computer is not set to auto-adjust for daylight savings time. The user manually adjusted the clock to the correct time during the time shift, moving GMT off one hour. And since all calculations reach back to GMT, the inbound email is off by one hour in the other direction. This also affects appointment calendars. In both cases, the symptoms will disappear when we come off of daylight savings time. And since Kaleb's computer appears to be the only one with the 1 hour time shift, it's his machine that's set wrong. [MBZ] 87 300D head gasket
OK Don, On digest and so maybe time-late, but try spraying brake cleaner on the area between the valves and the pre-chamber to see if there are any cracks there (they may be quite visible once you clean down to bare metal). Then I'd highly recommend you pay $50 or so to have the head pressure-checked and cleaned-up, to make sure there aren't any deeper issues. Book says that the pressure check (of the coolant passages) is supposed to be done in a hot tank (80 deg C). Re: [MBZ] loose 300SDL pistons
Assuming the block and head were clean when the gasket was installed (this is necessary, but not always done, eh?), and leak will leave carbon between the gasket and block or head surface. That means any carbon or dirt tracks indicate leaks. The stainless steel ring must contact only clean cast iron or aluminum -- marks between are leaks, as are dark areas on the stainless. Oil between gasket and block/ head is also a sign of a blown gasket. You will also have oily soot in #1. Most common places on a 603 are the end cylinders (#1 and #6) into the chain case in front and into the bolt holes in the rear. This is due to the lack of material beyond the bolts and resultant lower clamping pressure. Second most common is between cylinders, notably #3 and #$ or #4 and #5. This is probably due to higher heat in the middle of the engine causing more gasket crush. Re-using head bolts is also a cause of gasket failure -- if they aren't elastic enough, the gasket will crush when hot, and leak when cold. But the full set, it's cheaper than a new head gasket set to fix it next time in 1 miles. One sign of coolant leaks is excessive glassy carbon buildup on head and piston top. If yours just have loose carbon on them, you don't have any coolant leaks into the combustion chamber. Note that you should clean the head completely, ditto the block, before re-assembly. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use Scotchbrite pads -- they shed grit and it will eat the rings in about 1000 miles. Brass brush works great. If you clean the pistons and head completely, you will be greeted, when you get it together and started, by horrible metallic clanking from combustion quench and re- ignition, so if you can get the sealing surfaces clean without cleaning the piston crowns and combustion area on the head, leave them sooty! The noise goes away in a few hundred miles, but is rather un-nerving before that. Re: [MBZ] Orelegated alternative forms of voter franchise on
I lost all respect (sorry, Donald) for attorneys when I saw my attorney and my ex's attorney sitting at a cafeteria table and laughing it up over cups of coffee during a recess of my divorce proceedings. They weren't protecting anyone's interests -- they were simply parroting what was already laid out in Virginia code (i.e., property settlement) and were probably comparing billable hours. They had no more concern about assisting either of us than you will have about getting up tomorrow morning and taking a leak. It was pure assembly line, with everyone having his hands in the back pockets of those they were supposed to be representing. The only reason they exist is because they are allowed to appear before the Court, where you and I aren't (unless we are in criminal court and decide to represent ourselves). The only advice my ex's attorney gave her was to try to provoke me into assaulting her (she tried but I as able to side-step everything -- which is maybe why I do what I do for a living now, natural instincts when working with out-of-control individuals). The only advice my attorney gave me was to throw my wife and children out onto the street, force sale the house and split the profits. (I refused, saying that she could just have the house for the sake of the two kids -- they had gone through enough trauma already without suddenly being homeless.) [MBZ] 124 evapectomy
Evap box is in the house! 'Told you I wasn't rushing. 'Been working on it very leisurely - coupla hrs early morning, coupla hrs late afternoon, etc. - didn't touch it yesterday. 'Could have been pleasurable were it not for the heat and humidity. Temp has been around 100F and more since I started it. 'Had a fan on me last coupla days. Guess who didn't wanta bring it in the house? I reminded her that it wasn't nearly as bad as the two snowmobiles with disassembled engines we saw in a colonel's living room across the street from us at Kincheloe AFB, MI, (the UP) in 1974. At least evap box is not in the living room, and I doubt I'll wash any parts in the dishwasher. Evap came out much easier than I was expecting. I had read reports of others having to pry theirs loose because of sealant around it at fiurewall. After everything was ready, including master switch/steering lock assembly and associated wires, etc., were out of the way on top of steering column mounting braces, the box came right out - no prying. 'Couldn't disconnect the plug on left side of box 'til I had pulled the box out a little way for better access to it. The clips on the plug assembly would NOT release in the normal manner by squeezing; 'finally got to it with both hands and pried hooks loose with small screwdriver one side at a time. 'Also had to pause extraction to go around to driver side of engine by brake booster and push blower motor cable and grommet through firewall. The unit is not nearly as heavy as I was afraid it may be. Wife even brought it up the steps into the kitchen for me after she realized it was coming in, anyway. Other than the steps, I can move it around on my walker. BTW, 'didn't drain radiator; disconnected heater core hoses just forward of firewall; lost maybe half a cup of coolant. 'Sealed open ends of core pipes before moving evap box. 'Had to remove battery to get to hose clamp behind inner, rear corner of battery. 'Didn't remove steering wheel, either; 'just ran it full out and put front wheels straight ahead to have flat part of steering wheel spoke on top to allow inst. cluster clearance. It's impossible to tell exactly what is on the grille, I have a badge on the grille of my 190E that commemorates the 100 year anniversary of MB in 86 (even though mine is an 85), the 190E has done 292K k's and could wear a 250K badge. In many cases only a licensed attorney can represent a corporation, sometimes an officer of the company can do it. That's the only time I can think of that you can be legally required to hire an attorney. You are always allowed to represent YOURSELF pro-se, but the judge may strongly discourage it in criminal matters. You can even file a suit in federal court by yourself if you want to, when an attorney not specifically authorized for practice before the federal bar cannot represent you. You will be more likely to have an unfavorable outcome because you failed to represent yourself in an optimal fashion, but attorneys aren't immune to incompetence either. A couple of my friends got divorced many years ago. Her attorney should have been sued for malpractice. She used up all her interrogatories without asking about his tax withholdings, which upset the wife when his lawyer asked for her tax withholding information and she found out that her withholdings (inadequate) were treated as a marital asset and his withholdings (overwithheld to make up for his wife's underwithholdings) were not part of the asset division. This is divorce law 101 here. Save a couple of questions for a rainy day, and always ask about IRS deposits. Her lawyer's answer to an upset client was to recommend they delay the final decree until after year end and file their taxes jointly. Husband had no intention of filing a joint return with his ex wife. So after losing her half of hubby's IRS and state tax deposits, she then paid an extra $1000 or so in taxes because she was married filing separately instead of single. I could have structured that settlement to reduce their combined tax bills by close to $3000 if they'd consulted me first. I've talked to more than one family practice attorney who admitted to barely passing the required high school math classes. Re: [MBZ] Tools for MB
Thank goodness - they're both on opposite sides of town from me. I have a big roll around mechanic's chest I built some years back for my woodworking tools. I had these wimpy little hard rubber casters on it I knew would fail some day, but they were in my junk box at the time I built it and it didn't get moved around in the shop much... I knew there was no way it would make it up the moving truck ramp, so I figured it was time to pony up and put some real casters on it. I went to Harbor Freight and bought 8 ball bearing rubber tire casters, two fixed and two swivel, with locks. Cost me about $45. Now my box kicks butt. I started wandering around the store until I saw all the other guys with a glazed over sort of look on their faces...after going down a few aisles I understood why. I went right to the casters, got what I needed, and checked out immediately. I got home and told my teenage son about the place. He was suitably unimpressed. Darn kids these days. Re: [MBZ] 124 evapectomy
Reach into the driver's side (I think, may be on the passenger side) and pull the little plastic pin that connects the link between the floor vent flaps BEFORE you do anything else. If you don't, you will break the plastic hinge in the link, and it's not available separately. This is a big PITA, and it's not in the manual! You do need sealant on the firewall, or it will leak air. Going back in, watch for the motion necessary to get the evaporator pipes through and the seal located correctly, it's tricky. When installing the new evaporator, make SURE the screen is properly installed. You may need to bend the fins on the bottom and top to get the dimples in the screen to go in as it was orginally installed. If the screen isn't on right, the box will NOT fit together correctly, and it will drive you nuts. Mine was glued with silicon from a bad reassembly job, and this is not necessary. Keep the clips that hold the parts of the box together in a safe place -- they don't work after you step on them. Peter On Jun 9, 2008, at 7:16 PM, Wilton Strickland wrote: Evap box is in the house!
