[MBZ] In search of...G-05

2008-08-18 Thread Mitch Haley
Had a fun day trying to find G-05 for my 190E. None of the FLAPS would admit to
being able to procure G-05. "our customers want that new universal stuff
instead, so we don't sell G-05 anymore". Yeah, right. This is the same
so-called
universal crap you've been aggressively pushing for the last 2-3 years, and now
you claim that the customers demanded it?

Found factory stuff at dealers and Rusty's, all in the $21-23 range. Rusty was
cheapest and it comes in genuine MBZ bottles. Almost called Tom back to ask him
the minimum quantity for free shipping when I thought of another possible
source, the local Quaker State quickie lube.

Good news is that the oil change place had a 15 gallon barrel of "G-05". Bad
news is that it's pink, and all they could tell me was that it was "G-05", they
bought it from Quaker State, they kept it on hand for use in the newer Fords,
and they'd sell it to me for $10 a gallon out the door. I bought two gallons,
but I haven't heard of anybody selling BASF's G-05 formula with pink dye in it
before. They had Dex-Cool also, and the stuff I bought was not their Dex-Cool.
I
can't find any reference to this stuff on Quaker State's web page.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Now SST's - was B-58

2008-08-18 Thread Peter Frederick
If I remember correctly the Russians actually put them in scheduled
service inside the USSR for a while. They were retired because they
burned too much fuel -- took a full 30 min of afterburner at full
reheat to get up to altitude and speed, and that shortened the range
too much (along with the usual Russian airplane maintenance, etc).

The TU is pretty snaz for 1968 -- variable pitch turbofan with duct
burning reheat, and I believe variable pitch compressor first stage,
too.

If the Ruskies could every keep their aircraft stuck together and
used rational tactics, they'd beat the pants off of us. Good thing
is that's not likely to change! The Georgians shot down at least one
Backfire bomber and a couple top of the line fighters last week.

Re: [MBZ] Lock cylinder lube

2008-08-18 Thread Peter Frederick
No, WD-40 is a water dispersant, and turns into rubber cement with
age. NEVER use it for lubrication, it's not a lubricant! It
consists of propane, light kerosene, and a few linear hydrocarbon
compounds and some ethers of some sort. Does a great job of removing
water from distributor caps and things like that, but the residue is
VERY gummy!

I would suggest a "dry silicone" lubricant -- that is, a fairly long
chain dimethy poly siloxane of some sort. I used to have a bottle of
Supelco SE-50, which is really a gas chromatography stationary phase,
but it make a great dry lubricant. Hard to pick up things coated
with it they are so slippery. I dissolves in hexane.

so the kid pronounces cheerwine to be the real deal, but i've never heard of

Powdered graphite is the best lubricant for any type of locking mechanism,
provided that it does not have any sensitive electric circuitry (e.g. car
locks with alarm, ignition, etc.).

Local locksmith advised WD-40 when we were having troubles with the
ignition lock on our Dodge Caravan. Probably not bad advice; should
do a decent job disolving gunk, and it eventually evaporates almost
entirely, leaving a very light lube behind if anything.

I'll pass on the compressed air. It's just an energy storage
mechanism, probably less efficient than most and certainly quite
dangerous -- you thought the suspension springs held a lot of
energy...

I'm keeping a casual eye out for a good BMW R750. Saw one the other

retired after 45 years at GM, she's a natural citizen of the USSA.

The original title to the NPR article was "For Some Ohioans, Even Meat Is Out
Of
Reach", which left me thinking "of course she can't reach it, her arm's too
heavy to lift" and "it sure looks like plenty of some calorie source is in her
reach". When you get into the details of the story, she has more free spending
cash than a lot of taxpaying workers. She gets housing, $102 in food stamps and
$637 in cash. Obviously, a 400lb manatee consumes more than $100 a month in
food, but even if she pays $300 a month for food she's got about $440 a month
after food, medical, and housing to pay for utilities, clothes, etc.

I know somebody who would gladly trade places with this cow. She works at
WalMart, takes home about $800 a month after taxes, pays $500 a month in rent,
and gets taken to the cleaners by medical care providers who would accept far
less if insurance or medicaid was paying for it. Her idea of a good week is
when
she has $20 left over to put in her gas tank to drive to work on.

Because they changed their setup. They decided to break out whether it's

If you are looking for a good auto loader than how about a Remington 1187. I
used a customized version of the 1187 when I worked armed security the nuke

Thanks for the suggestions, Mitch.

One thing I failed to mention was that given the choice, I would prefer not to
have a pump action shotgun, if possible. I realize the 870 is pump action, but
I was using it as an example of a popular, inexpensive and readily available
gun.

Any suggestions for a non-pump action shotgun?

I'd like to see what they do to the tank to make it fail soft in a crash. Any
commercially available tanks (think SCOTT or SCUBA) I can think of would fail
explosively, and the 20 mile range version would have enough energy that the
EMTs would never find half of the pieces of the rider.

If you name your company Zero Pollution Motors, I'll laugh at you and call you
Hidden Pollution Motors. (although the name could be pretty close to accurate
if
you ran the air compressor from hydro, wind, solar, or nuclear generated
electricity)

Re: [MBZ] OT - Now SST's - was B-58

2008-08-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Oh, and by the way, the one that crashed at the Paris Air Show
crashed not as a result of failure of the airplane, but as a result
of a deliberate incursion into the flight path by a French fighter.
NOT an accident, although I really don't think the fighter pilot
expected the TU-144 to come apart in the air.

By flying directly into the flight path of the TU 144, the fighter
caused the pilot of the TU to "bunt" -- that is, pull up too
sharply, stalling the engines and causing a severe temporary loss of
power, leading to an aerodynamic stall at fairly low speed and
altitude. The recovery attempt resulted in a tail failure to from
over-stressing the airframe in a desperate attempt to keep from
pancaking. Not a failure of design or execution of the airframe,
it's very unlikely any aircraft would survive those conditions intact.

The flight path incursion was planned deliberately to make the TU-144
look bad (remember, it was flying before the Concorde was ready) and
there was significant interest in supersonic transport at the time,
and there was no market for TWO SSTs. I would presume the subsequent
crash was NOT planned.

Re: [MBZ] OT Difference on Taxes

2008-08-18 Thread Rich Thomas
"The rising cost of food means their money gets them about a third fewer
bags of groceries — $100 used to buy about 12 bags of groceries, but now
it's more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like
meat, and they don't buy extras like ice cream anymore. Instead, they
eat a lot of starches like potatoes and noodles."

Both those women in the picture must weigh at least 300lb, so much for
groceries being an issue.

I used to live in Dorchester, a part of Boston with a significant
immigrant (recent, as well as the Irish and everyone else who came over
and started at the bottom of the heap) population. There was a fruit/veg
store there, kind of a warehouse thing, that always had good stuff
cheap. I would go there and see these Caribs buying rice, beans,
unidentifiable root things, and other stuff, very little meat. They were
all skinny and in good health. There were some Haitians living across
the street from me, 3 brothers bought a triple-decker (triple decka) and
lived in it with their families, all worked 2 or 3 jobs and loved
America for what they could do. Whenever I talked to them on the street,
they would invariably go off on the lazy welfare types up the street
(black, but these guys were blacker) who were fat, lazy, no-good
criminals, etc etc. Definitely not PC, and the language they used would
have gotten me shot! My next door neighbor was Cape Verdean, he had a
little garden plot in back, grew weird stuff, and he had the same
attitude. They were harsher than the Irish rednecks up the street, go
figure.

Don't work, no money, get fat. Work hard, make money, stay skinny. What
a country!

[MBZ] OT Ford truck issues again

2008-08-18 Thread R A Bennell
I HOPE I have finally resolved my truck issues. I should know right after
dinner as I intend to pop in another COP
that I bought this afternoon. I posted earlier about my issues with a code for
a bad coil on #2.

I assumed it might be related to the command start setup since I noticed a wire
attached to the #2 feed that was
aftermarket and seemed related to the command start. However this was not until
I had replaced the coil and then
swapped it to another cylinder to see if the code came back. I removed the
command start and re connected the
wiring. In the process I discovered that the wire running through the engine
compartment to #2 coil appears to have
come into contact with something warm and melted a bit of the plastic cover off
in a couple of places. I expect
that has permitted it to ground out. According to some literature on the
subject, that probably fried the coil. If
that is the case, then this new coil should solve the problem. I sure hope so
as this will be the 3rd coil fried by
that grounding. I assumed the first had gone bad and that the second was
defective from the factory. Now I know
otherwise. They were likely both killed by this grounding out as was the
replacement for the one I thought was
defective. Will check a bit with the meter before installing this new one but
am essentially convinced that was the
problem. Sure hope so as I am tired of buying coils and I need my truck.

I like old vehicles like my 300D. Not much to go wrong. I wonder if I could
live with a diesel wagon in place of
the truck. Might miss the 4 wheel drive in the dead of winter but all else
would likely be fine.

2008-08-18 Thread Curt Raymond
If he sticks to 2 1/2 dram "Trap" loads flinch won't be much of an issue as
long as the gun isn't real light, especially in an over/under because it won't
be real light...

A 20ga with 3 dram loads will kick just as much or more than a 12ga with 3 dram
loads because the gun will tend to weigh less...

I'd hesitate to buy a shotgun for someone else.  The balance,
the way it comes up, the way it swings - those are going to be hard
to predict for each shooter.  My $.02.  Maybe you could find a dealer
who would sell you a used one of what feels best with the agreement
your son can trade it for another on the rack of the same value
within a week or two.

Don't mean to rain on your parade.  I think you are right in
looking for a 12 ga - they do everything better than the little ones,
IMHO.  From what I have seen the biggest problem for new shooters is
recoil. People tend to overdo it, get sore and start flinching.  I
have found 12 ga over/unders to be punishing when fired for very
long.  If it doesn't violate your aesthetics I would suggest a gas
operated autoloader like the Remington 1100, or whatever they call
them nowadays, to start with.

Trap guns with the long barrels do make good waterfowl
guns.  Kind of slow on upland game.  He needs a skeet gun too.

Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are good affordable all-around choices, as are
the H&R single shots if you don't need to shoot skeet or take multiple shots at
waterfowl. I'm slightly biased here, as I was presented with a Mossberg 500 on
my 12th birthday, and I think the tang safety on the Mossberg is better than
the
crossbolt safety on the Remington.

Trap guns are single shots, often on over/under frames with a high rib taking
the space normally occupied by the top barrel. This is an affordable trap gun,
probably the only affordable trap gun:

Re: [MBZ] Lock cylinder lube

2008-08-18 Thread R A Bennell
I recently got something similar from a locksmith to use on my house locks. We
had a deadbolt that was not working
correctly. It was a good quality double cylinder lock but 20+ years old. I
wondered if it needed to be disassembled
and cleaned or if there might be parts that needed to be changed or repaired. I
took it into a local locksmith and
asked if it was worth repairing or if I just needed to buy a new one. The
fellow looked it over and tried the key
in it and said basically that he doubted there was anything really wrong with
it apart from needing to be lubed a
bit. He recommended a bottle of oil that they had on the counter as being what
they used. I don't recall the total
cost but it was not much - under $10 if I recall - only a month ago so I
should. They had aerosol spray cans of it
or squeeze bottles. I bought the latter.

It certainly seems to have worked well. No more problems with that lock and I
did the other doors too. A little
messy for a few days. Had to wipe the key off after locking or unlocking but so
far so good. Have not tried it on
the vehicles but might be a good idea.

When I started having trouble on my 85SD I went to the dealer and bought
a can of MB lock lube it was less that 20 bucks and has a spray nozzle
that fits into the key hole. I squirt my locks maybe twice a year. I
think the stuff is silicon based but really do not know what it is.(for
all I know its marvel mystery oil ;-o ??).
It is one of the few things I ever got at the dealer. I bought some
weird socked head screws for my motor mounts there and that is about it.
When my little can of spray runs out I will go back and buy another. It
is convenient and it seems to work.

[MBZ] OT - Shotgun Suggestions

2008-08-18 Thread Royce Engler
Loren said.

For my $.02:

870 is hard to beat.

I had a winchester 1200 from the late 60s. Everyone poo-pooed them but I
never had a problem.

Winchester Model 12 was always the standard of comparison, but they are
pricey.

If I were going to buy a shotgun now, I'd buy an 870. Relatively cheap and
plentiful. A good solid performer.

Gotta go with Loren. 870 was my second shotgun (first was a bolt
action with a long barrel and full choke that I bought in high school).
Bought the 870 when I was a LTJG in the Navy and had access to Welfare and
Rec shooting ranges. I've since inherited my Dad's 1100. Gotta say I do
like the 1100, but I've shot a lot of skeet and trap with the 870. Rock
solid and reliable, and available locally for $250 at Academy Sports.

[MBZ] seat repairs

2008-08-18 Thread R A Bennell
My car is a 76 300D - so a 115 model.

I did a repair job on the driver's side seat base a year or two back that has
helped. I think I need to redo is
with some additional padding but all in all it turned out reasonably well and
slowed the damage that was happening
to the cover of the seat from the springs. The spring box appeared to be
alright so I tied carpet to the top of it
with zip ties and then padded that with the filler stuff. Can't recall the name
of it but it is padding as
recommended in one of the online articles about rebuilding seats - obtained
from WalMart. I was concerned about
trying to stretch the cover over it and ended up splitting it in 2 and that was
my mistake. Now that it has packed
down some, the seat cover is a bit loose. I need to re do it with more padding
and then it should be OK. I did not
put the pool noodles into the base as it did not really seem to need it.

Now I need to do the passenger side and I guess I will do it the same.

Is there any good reason not to try doing something similar with the back seat?
I assume not but have not seen any
write ups on doing the rear seat.

Second question relates to the seat backs. The horsehair is falling out of the
seat backs and the side bolsters are
losing shape at the bottom. Does anyone have a solution to seat back repair or
is it just time to bite the biscuit
and order new ones? I have not looked but assume they are available.

What really gets to me is what the government does with all that money. For an
example, I used to live out at what
we now consider the cottage. It is in a very small town on Lake of the Woods
south of Kenora. I left there in 1975
to go to University. When I lived there we had a Police station and at least 3
fulltime local policemen year round
and additional policemen in the summer time when the tourist population
increased. There was a police boat
stationed there that cruised the lake on a regular basis.

We also had a Natural Resources base with several game wardens that cruised the
lake.

All of that is gone. There is no real presence of either force there now. I
think the closest would be about 50
miles away in Kenora.

There are guard rails along the highway in spots where the ditch is deep. They
are posts buried in the ground with
cables attached to them. When I was younger, these were all painted white and
maintained regularly. I don't recall
seeing them in need of paint. Today, they don't bother to paint them and
significant numbers of them are broken
off - likely by the snow ploughs in winter. They don't bother to replace let
alone paint.

There is talk of taking out all the navigation buoys on the lake because they
don't want to pay to maintain them.
If they do that, we will all have to have GPS with the local maps to avoid the
reefs. I hope the underwater rocks
are marked well on the GPS maps.

Taxes are higher but basic services are gone. What the heck are they doing with
all the money?

If I had to guess, I would say that they have promoted to the point where there
are lots of upper management types
and no people left on the street to do the work. Lots of desk cops and highway
engineers earning in excess of 6
figures moaning about the fact that they have no money to spend on the services
their department is supposed to
provide.

You aren't trying hard enough, because some people get all that you mention
above. Their financial standard of living is lower than yours, but they don't
have to actually do anything to maintain that reduced standard once they get it
set up. It's a lot harder than it was 30-40 years ago, you can't just sit on
your ass and say "send me a check", but if you can get yourself certified as
disabled by the government, or if you breed like rabbits, you can still do it.
If you want a high standard of living for doing nothing, have one kid with
somebody whose income puts them in the $5k a month or higher child support
bracket. You and one child can live quite nicely on $60k a year (or better yet,
$6 million a year if you divorce Donald Trump) of tax free child support.

In the low standard of living category, here's a woman who has never worked in
all her 40 years. Everybody she knows is habitually unemployed too, yet she was
raised by a man who worked his keester off in a car factory for 45 years and
tried to set a good example for her:

When I go to car shows, I like to see examples of vehicles that are actually
driven around and not just trailered
in for the event. If the vehicle is more perfect than when it left the factory
I have no interest in it.

However, I should probably wash my poor old red car. I took it to the lake this
past weekend and the bugs were
quite bad. Could hardly see out the windshield from Falcon Lake to Kenora. Went
in for fuel, even though I didn't
need it, just so I could wash the windshield.

Am amazed at the way this old car runs. When I got it, I felt like I was
abusing it at 60 mph. This weekend, I had
a hard time keeping it below 75 mph. It wants to go faster. I guess there is a
lot to be said for the old "Italian
tuneup". It must have been carboned up from mostly short city trips when I got
it.

Re: [MBZ] stupid transmission

2008-08-18 Thread Frederick W Moir
Hi, All.
The trans that was from the junkyard, for my (then) 190E '85 was an
absolute bear to get out from underneath. The T/C "nose' was rust
welded into the crankshaft. This being a J/Y car missing a few bits
on top and in front of the engine, it was easy to remove an engine
mount bolt and slew the motor a little. The trans then fell on me,
minus the T/C! The next half hour was used in prying the converter
out of the crankshaft without damage. Never again!
Removing the tans from my 190E was simpler. Removal of the drive disc
to T/C bolts let me turn the starter against a large screw driver
between the bosses and thus break the grip of the rusted nubbin. The
trans with converter came out onto a jack and so on. All was in vain
though, the J/Y trans lasted a whole week. $75 down the drain.

Re: [MBZ] OT Difference on Taxes

2008-08-18 Thread Redghost
Bill Gates and his father are not poor or republican. They want to
do away with any sort of tax relief for those who they feel should be
returning the wealth to show gratitude for all they have been blessed
with.

What this does end up doing is killing the family business that now
has to liquidate upon the death of the founder, and the children and
grandchildren are no longer able to continue the farm, the store, or
the transportation company. Sell off the business before you die and
Bill and Bill Sr. can rake in cash buying or doing the legal leg work
on the deal.

There are a bunch of M$ millionaires who give lavishly to causes.
Taxes are another story for them though. Grubbing and scraping to
not pay their share of infrastructure fees for the mcmansions and
trouble they cause here.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Shotgun Suggestions

For my $.02:

870 is hard to beat.

I had a winchester 1200 from the late 60s. Everyone poo-pooed them
but I never had a problem.

Winchester Model 12 was always the standard of comparison, but they are pricey.

If I were going to buy a shotgun now, I'd buy an 870. Relatively
cheap and plentiful. A good solid performer.

[MBZ] OT Difference on Taxes

2008-08-18 Thread Rich Thomas
There are some people who believe it is right and just for the
government to take money in taxes from people who have more money, and
give it to those who have less money through various programs, grants,
tax breaks, whatever. That is their belief system.

There are some who believe it is right and just for those who have more
money not to have the government penalize them for their financial
success to support those who are not as successful. (I think most of
those people also believe that some amount of tax-based redistribution
is reasonable to help people who have problems, but most of those also
believe that most everyone can go work and make more money if they
invest in education, work, etc. and not being dumbasses about a bunch of
things that impede them from financial success.) That is an equally
valid belief system.

There are a whole bunch who are somewhere in the middle, grumble and
complain on April 15, but don't do much or think too much about it.

So, these are 2 kinds of people who generally become polarized around
their valid belief systems, and neither kind is gonna change the minds
of the other though it does lead to lots of effort to try to do so. I
have thought a lot about why a person falls into one camp or the other
(or actively somewhere in between) and have some clues, but nothing
definitive. (I note that some liberal friends of mine who have moved up
into the Alternative Minimum Tax realm are rapidly developing more
conservative thoughts when that little surprise bites them, or their
wives like to spend that "excess" money on various things, or both.)

I'd like to see what they do to the tank to make it fail soft in a crash. Any
commercially available tanks (think SCOTT or SCUBA) I can think of would fail
explosively, and the 20 mile range version would have enough energy that the

Thanks Tom I will keep your suggestion in mind regarding the injectors.
Probably will take them to the injector shop as part of the process. As far
as Donalds suggestion regarding a replacement engine, I'm wondering what
that might cost? I recall hearing prices for a crate engine at $6k and up.
Anyone have a line on a used engine? My Indy is very confident in his
rebuilder. Guy charges around $1400 plus parts. Then I'd have to pay my Indy
the labor to pull and install the engine.

When I first saw the picture, I thought of Mechanix Illustrated's trike from
the
late 1970's, but the pic of the frame looks like it's a new design. The MI car
had the back end of a motorcycle in it so you wouldn't have to fabricate a rear

I suspect if you let Joe Average drive it, he'll complain that it's too slow

get a little better mpg than a Honda Insight, maybe 80mpg if he's lucky.

Re: [MBZ] Combination switch

2008-08-18 Thread Jim Cathey
Per request, I photographed the combination switch so as to highlight
the way it opens. On the upper sides of the plastic body are two
plastic bails that have to be bent away from the contact-carrying
plastic 'plug' more or less simultaneously. If you do this right and
the bails don't break, the plug swings up and out on its wires,
exposing the guts for cleaning. There is a little spring hooked
between two pegs buried in amongst the terminal lugs, don't lose that
and make sure you hook it back up. (It's what puts spring tension on
the headlight switch contacts, and the switch won't work right without
it.) You don't necessarily have to open up the switch to clean the
headlight contacts, if you look around it you can see where they are
exposed at one side. (Problems with the turn signal contacts would
probably require it to be opened.) The switch is actually much
simpler than it appears, half of the terminal lugs on it are just
dummies that are there to join the cable to the wires that go up the
switch stalk for the wiper switches.

I then cleaned the switch contacts and snapped the switch back
together. The date code on the switch indicates that it is probably
the original unit. Reinstalling the switch was surprisingly
difficult, and it wasn't the usual problem of getting the connectors
threaded back through the steering column. The knot of the main
wiring harness was sufficiently in the way of the big connector that I
couldn't get them mated again, I had to remove the female connector
from its chassis mount in order to mate them, then I could snap them
back into the slot in the bracket. At that point it was easy to put
the rest back together. From appearances the turn signal release tab
on the steering column is physically centered, so I don't think I need
to do anything there. I did plug the warning module back in and it's
time to start putting everything back together, but I was (again) out
of time this morning.

My recent experience with plugs is that one should buy from the dealer and put
back in what the factory installed.
I had no end of trouble with aftermarket plugs in our 4Runner and the advice on

[MBZ] OT: Motorcycles powered by compressed air

2008-08-18 Thread andrew strasfogel
TRANSPORTATION: Future motorcycles could drive on air (08/18/2008)

Taiwanese researchers are experimenting with a new vehicle that is propelled
by compressed air instead of traditional hydrocarbon fuels.

The current prototype has a 2.5-gallon tank for compressed air that could
carry a rider for three-quarters of a mile, but the researchers say the
final model's tank will be enlarged to three to four times its current size,
and its pressure will be increased, as well, giving the bike a range of
almost 20 miles.

While the bike itself would have zero emissions, its carbon neutrality would
depend on the source of the electricity it uses to compress the air, they
said in a report published in the journal *Applied Energy*.

Separate researchers at the company Zero Pollution Motors are developing
compressed air-biofuel hybrid cars that they say could operate at more than
100 miles per gallon.

Zero Pollution Motors plans to build a plant to manufacture the cars
beginning in late 2010 or early 2011 (Jessica Marshall, Discovery
News,
Aug. 14). *-- PR*

[MBZ] Potential engine rebuild

2008-08-18 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Ralph,

My 1975 300D developed a serious knock a few years ago after I demonstrated
'hard acceleration in a diesel', by downshifting up a hill. As I crested the
hill, I heard this awful knock. I drove it directly home and parked it.
I had several consultations with friends, all of whom sadly shook their heads
in sympathy. With the help of a stethoscope I located the source of the noise
in the block at the #1 cylinder. The consensus of opinion was that this was a
serious problem, probably a rod. I finally brought in the services of local
expert, John 'Mercedes', who suggested replacing the timing chain tensioner.
That resulted in no change, so over the phone he said there is one more thing
that might do it replace the copper seals on the injectors. Bingo! I
replaced the copper seal on the injector for the #1 cylinder and VOILA!... The
knock was GONE. It's been fine ever since. I LOVE those 2 dollar repairs vs
an engine rebuild!

The problem arose apparently because I had swapped out a few injectors from my
other engine without replacing the seals, as recommended by Mercedes. Now I
know WHY they recommend the replacement. :)

Ralph, I don't know if you have had your injectors out... or if this could be
your problem, but for a couple of bucks it may be worth a shot. I also found
the stethoscope to be invaluable in pinpointing the exact location of the
source of the noise.

Good luck,
Tom Schuch
