Re: [MBZ] Bills car
OK going down the list. Squealing belt probably not tight enough. Air direction could be sticking vent flaps or maybe the controller has some of those cold solder joints and needs to be resoldered. Fast idle need to check for some sticking in the linkages. Remember I did find some problems there already but am not too happy with all that yet. That weird shift problem I don't really know. It didn't happen on the short test drive I did but that means nothing. It could be a part of that whole linkage problem. If the throttle cable is at just the right place, meaning not adjusted correctly, it may be causing that. The mirrors are held to the mechanism with a ball and socket system. It is plastic and if not broken should just snap back into place. Trying to manually adjust the mirror to make up for a broken motor can pop it loose. I found out on mine that there is not too much you can fix on those other then to try and oil them and if that doesn't do it then put a new motor system in. Now the paper hitting the fan sounds like something that happens right after the Sh** hits the fan. So we probably need to find out what causes that first. The dome light is a tracing job to find out where the break is. Could be a bulb, the switches in the rear door frames or a wire somewhere. You have checked the fuses right? So since loose belt will wear more and more every time the AC is in use even if you don't hear it squealing so that needs to be done soon or you need to leave the AC off till it is done. Not something I want to think about during the day with the sun nice and bright. Then again winter is coming so you don't have to put up with the heat for too long. Riiight.. The fast idle and linkage sounds like the big thing I would want to tackle first. We need to plan for a good long afternoon for that. The las time I was up there I just didn't have enough time to do much but a rough fix. The shifting problem may be taken care of at the same time. If it isn't then Continental imports is just a bit down the road and I'm pretty sure that they have enough experience to be able to figure it out if it isn't just the cable adjustment. I don't know on yours if the valves need to be adjusted or if it has the self adjusting ones. The valves being out of adjustment can cause poor mileage, I know cause I need to do mine some time real soon. The other thing to check is for dragging brakes. There again I just redid the rear brakes on mine as one of the calipers was bad. They only had about 40,000 miles on them and the right one started to drag. Got replacements for free and checked the parking brakes at the same time. Good thing I did as the left shoes were delaminating. Could have come loose entirely and caused some problems there. I do so not want to replace any more MB parking brake shoes! It took me just over 1/2 hr per side to do them. I used to do a complete rear brake job in an hour including honing and rebuilding the cylinders and machining the drums. I hate that God forsaken misogynous illegitimate offspring of a syphilitic whore who designed the system to hold the shoes to the backing plate. Enough I'm done. Meanwhile back at the park; So let me know when you can get a chance to come down and I can play with some of the simple things that need fixing on your car. Manfred Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2008 18:59:37 -0400 From: Bill R [EMAIL PROTECTED] My thoughts exactly on the 'gas' cap. While hat might have been a factor, the car is not running as it should. AC issues [for my nephew] include squealing belt at idle and air direction not being well controlled, even with new accumulators under there. It is having a tendency toward a fast idle some of the time. Shift is flaring 2-3, 2-3 [yes it usually does it twice],3-4. Other than that just little stuff - mirror not properly connected to the mechanism, paper that hits the fan much of the time, rear dome light not operational. Mostly the shift and idle difficulties/poor mileage are what I am concerned about. Re: [MBZ] Squeaky wheel - literally W123
Can you tell if the noise is coming from within the passenger compartment? We had a Taurus that did that a number of years back and it was a disk under the steering wheel that was related to electrical contact for the cruise control switches in the steering wheel. I pulled the wheel and lubed it with something (not sure what now) and it was fine thereafter. No idea if your era MB has anything similar. [MBZ] S350 diesel sedan
Hi all, OK, so I started making biodiesel about a year ago. It's running very well in my tractors and skid loaders. I get the bright idea to look for diesel cars as I already have a gas pickup (that's paid for). I started with the VW's , wanted a little bigger vehicle. A friend suggested looking into Mercedes diesels. I set my Ebay search to watch for MB diesel cars. I find a S350, very reasonable price, very nice condition. I win the bid, get it home and then find out I bought a rod bender! I'm trying to decide to sell it again or keep it and give it a shot. It runs great, doesn't seem to be consuming hardly any oil. Body interior in great shape. I've done quite a bit more research and I've been getting about 10-1, horror stories to good stories with the S350's. I'd sure like to hear from others, good or bad. Keep it or sell it while I can! Re: [MBZ] S350 diesel sedan
Personally, I'd sell it and buy something with an OM602 engine. If the engine goes while you own it, you'll lose your investment as the car will become almost worthless. There is a chance that one of the previous owners had your engine replaced with an updated one. 150 bar is about 2100 to 2200 psi. That was common for hydraulic systems in the 40s and 50s. A lot of hydraulics run up to 3000PSI now. I have no idea what pressures the 600 ran. I'd guess 2000 PSI for the suspension is within reason. Windows may run a lower pressure, so as not to clip the pope's hand or head. [MBZ] 300SD RV
On Sep 18, 2008, at 4:54 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You gotta admit though that it is a rather engaging corruption. --R Conceptually, it's VERY engaging. I had a vanagon Westfalia Turbodiesel until very recently, (which I lived in a couple months a year on multithousand mile business trips) when it blew its second engine. I also have a 300SD. I loved the Westy, but wished that it had Mercedes diesel power, as the VW diesel engine, while a good little mill, just isn't durable enough to run wide open constantly pushing that big 2-ton box around. about 100k is about all you can get out of them, usually with a headgasket and IP rebuild thrown in there at least. I'd love some sort of a small Mercedes RV--the sprinter is just too big and truck-like for my liking. If done nicely, I might have been interested in buying this one to replace the Westy, but it's a real backyard sawzall-and-caulking-gun hack job, and the slide-in camper is beat to hell and a cheap one besides. One might make a real nice one by fusing an airstream bambi body to a MBZ 300TD chassis, I would think. As I say, I'd love to have a 300SD/TD/SDL based camper, but only done really nicely,. I tried to figure a way to install a 617 engine and trans in a vanagon, but it's just too big and heavy.
