BTW, I got a Harbor Freight flyer the other day and saw something interesting.
They have a hex bit set for $12.99. 3/8 drive 4-8mm + 10mm, 1/2 drive
12,14,17mm. It's like buying the Autozone 12-14-17 set and getting a 3/8 drive
set for free.

locked it up. I am wondering if a bolt came loose at the back when the
tranny install was done. Didnt get much time to ask the guy if he drove
it at all after the tranny install since he was in a big hurry to get

Subject: [MBZ] I just returned from a car deal gone sour

So there is this car in OKC on craigslist. I email the guy a few times,
then tell him I can come Saturday (today) to pick it up. He first wants
to meet me before 8am. I tell him that is too early since I have a 2
hour drive. He then wants me to meet him at 6pm. I didnt really want
to be loading a car in the dark but OK. So he wants me to meet him at
the mcdonalds right off the turnpike. He shows up about 15 minutes late
and I follow him over to a nearby RV park where the car is. So he give
me the title, I give him the cash. He asks if I need his help loading
the car and I say no, I dont. So he takes off. Ok, so I get the car
loaded and about the time Im getting ready to leave this pickup truck
full of rednecks comes flying up. They guy gets out yelling that I am
stealing the car etc. I try to explain to him that I have the car on my
trailer, keys to the car, and a clear title signed off by the owner. He
says the guy(who I bought it off of) owes him 3k and he has a lien on
the car. I tell him to produce said lien. He cant. Turns out he is
the owner of the RV park. Anyway, so I call the cops and they finally
show up. I explain the situation to the officer and show him the title
etc. He starts to give me some crap saying I dont own the car because
its not in my name. I tell him that is correct because I just bought
the car and I have the title right here. I would not have had time to
get a title. Anyway, the cop says hes going to have to call into his
supervisor to see what to do. The rv park guy asks the cop something
and the cop tells him I have a title so I am the owner unless he can
come up with a lien or something. By this time the guy knows he cant do
anything to he starts backing down and asks me if he could make a copy
of the title so he can try and go after the guy. I told him I would
help him out anyway I could and he even had a couple of MB's he needs
parts for. So turned out OK. I would have been screwed if it was one
of those deals where there was no title for the car. Never again will I
meet somebody after dark like that, then let them leave before I do.

i'm more sure that it isn't polio than anything else. my issue is that
everyone makes this polio claim. if you go to hyde park, all they do is
talk about his polio. obviously, he suffered from a disabling malady, but
to just keep repeated was polio doesn't seem right to me.

on a side note, i went bowling today with the church. you'd think this to
be a pretty safe activity, but my knees now are functioning particularly
poorly after bowling 3 games. i remember when the local bowling center back
in queens in the early 80s would have $1 games during weekdays and i'd bowl
15 to 25 games in a day with no ill effect whatever. guess a quarter
century of abuse can do that to a fella.

I've had it (very minor) as long as I can remember, but I'm starting to
lean away from the polio theory and more towards something else, like CP.
There's no way to tell for sure.
When I was two, I got an early sample of the Sabin live culture polio
vaccine. I got stomach flu and had some paralysis (mostly left leg) about
a
week later. I wasn't the only one who got sick after being immunized that
day, but the neighbor's daughter (several years older than me) only had
flu
symptoms. OTOH, I'd already been vaccinated with the Salk stuff, so to get
polio from the vaccine I'd have had to pick up no immunity from the Salk
vaccine and then had the bad luck to get polio from the Sabin vaccine.

I'm still very much against continued use of the Sabin vaccine, especially
since even the CDC admits that the majority of the polio cases in the last
30 years are vaccine induced. There's not much natural poliomyelitis in
the
world today, and virtually none in the USA. I can't believe Thunderbird
has
'poliomyelitis' in its spelling dictionary, but not 'Obama' or even
'Osama'.

[MBZ] 240D parking brake

2008-11-09 Thread Curt Raymond
The parking brake cable system on the 240D is fairly brilliant... After I
realized I wasn't gonna finish the front brakes I started chasing my stuck
cable which wasn't a cable at all its the pivot under the car. I sprayed it
with Deep Creep and yanked the cables back and forth until the pivot moved
freely, then coated everything that moved with axle grease. That should keep
the water off it for awhile anyway.

The parking brake seems to even work now the problem is that when it wasn't
working I lifted the pedal a couple times and seem to have buggered the cable
attachement a little. I've had the pedal out once already and its a b!tch
because one nut is really hard to get at. I bought an air ratchet this morning
in the hope that it'll make it easier to do that one nut (down under the fuse
box where you can't reach).

Thanks for the input, sounds like what I'm looking for. Can you provide

I have one of the four stroke 2000w models and I love it. It runs the sump
pump and lights very well if the power goes out. It will start the fridge
sometimes but it doesn't like it. Power is not very clean or steady. I
wouldn't suggest one for running a pc as it makes terrible interference
when i tried to run the tv. Works great for power tools too. Weighs maybe
fifty pounds. Runs for FIVE hours on one gallon of gas.

Mike

Anyone have experience with these small units? I see them for ~$150, 2000
watt, both 2 and 4 stroke.

I have a 4500 watt that handles the fridge, TV and lights. That's all I
really need down here in the south.

However, I would like to have a back up for the back up that would be
small enough to haul around by hand and use away from the house.

Thanks

[MBZ] IT LIVES!!!

2008-11-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Well  I guess you knew it was alive but tonight I got all the brakes setup to
my satisfaction, bled them and got new fluid through all the lines, got the
parking brake set so it seems pretty good (the foot pedal still needs work) so
I took him for a ride and got some fuel.
The fuel tank vent is plugged, thats probably no surprise after sitting so
much. The tires make noise, again no big shocker. The steering wheel is about 2
splines to the right, I'd taken it off when I did the dash pod last and forgot
to mark it first. I think those questionable looking ball joints in the front
are actually bad though I might have had a soft tire. Dwight gave me some
studded snows that'll go on soon.
The engine ran great, its hard to describe how different a 240D feels compared
to a 190D though, the 190D is much more refined, as it should be. Clutch felt
good, brakes felt great. One squeaked a bit but I'm sure that'll quiet down
with some use.
Came right up to temp and stayed there except when it heat soaked at the gas
station. I remember it doing that before. I should replace the coolant, another
thing on the list which had gotten shorter but now has extended again.

For the first time ever Hammie has a proper 240D driver's carpet, its just a
bit darker than the interior of the car, more brown than tan, but it looks a
heck of a lot better than no carpet at all!

[MBZ] Mac uptime

2008-11-09 Thread Jim Cathey

The power has failed here today, and the UPS was showing signs
of distress so I had to power everything down. This Mac had been
up continuously since 111 days before Oct 10, whatever that is.
(Too lazy to do the math.) Still won't be 'up', since I'm running
on the generator right now, and may end up shutting it down again
this evening unless the power comes back on before then. I've
generally been very pleased with the stability of this platform,
old though it may be. (233 MHz G3, running 10.2.8, their last OS
that supports this platform.) Though at times a bit sluggish, it
has done everything I need it to do, including running Illustrator.
If I would just pony up the $20 or so it'd take to give it more than
its 384 MB of memory I'm sure it would run even better.

[MBZ] 190E wont upshift, update

2008-11-09 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
If you all remember I have a 84 190D that had a bad trans. Installed a
supposed good used trans out of a 2.6. The strange thing bout this
trans is it has a strange fluid line assembly that runs from the cover
of the back plate (governor?) to a solenoid with a single electrical
connector, then to a port near the front of the tranny. EPC says this
is for increased shift points. OK, so the trans goes right into
forward, reverse etc but will not upshift. Previous discussions here
figured it was either not building enough pressure or its something in
the valve body. Well today I installed the valve body in the new
trans that was in the old trans (only thing wrong with the old one is
the b2 band broke). Same problem, will not upshift. I have tried it
both with and without power applied to that solenoid thing. Have tried
it with the kickdown unplugged and even with the control cable unhooked.
So, my next thing I guess is that upshift line assembly thing. I
guess I need to try and block it off and see what that does. I guess I
will just remove the banjo bolts and installed regular bolts so it wont
pass fluid. Anybody got any other ideas?

Northern Tool had a little 12V windmill in today's paper for like $550,
and some batteries, and some low amp PV panels. Enough of that stuff
and a half-windy place and some WVO in your diesel genset you might be
all set for the End Of The World As We Know It. And rice, beans, guns
and ammo, can't forget that.. I'm not really sure you would need
electricity anyway, except to keep your ipod charged up. No intertubes
or TV to watch.

Does anyone remember the 50s movie The End of the World where there was
a nuke war, some dude had a place in a natural canyon with lead deposits
to absorb the radiation, but there were creatures that turned from human
into 3 horned things, one of the refugees named Raddicks went up to eat
some radioactive rabbits and turned into one (a 3-horned thing, not a
rabbit)? The old dude had a hot daughter that the Raddicks monster
tried to kill, but the strong dude who joined the little party saved
her? That was one great flick! Then it rained clean rain, and the
clean rain melted 3-horned Raddicks. Commies put down, Merka rises
again, yea!!!

My point is, somehow that dude kept electricity going the whole time, in
the 50s, in the midst of a nuke war, wtihout windmills and PVs. Go
figure. The old dude and the strong dude wore khaki clothes, very manly
men. The hot daughter wore a dress and had her hair and makeup perfect,
in the midst of a nuke war. When I first saw that movie I wanted to
wear khaki clothes.

There are a lot of people out in the boonies of Texas who run their
places on wind and PV, totally off the grid.

the 50s, in the midst of a nuke war, wtihout windmills and PVs. Go

[MBZ] New Calipers in

2008-11-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Just think of how many MB related posts I've put on in the last 3 days...

The new Bendix reman calipers from Advance Auto are in. It occured to me I'm
going to eat the core charge because I want the experience of rebuilding my
ATEs...

Anyway the calipers are actually really nice, new rubber and metal and I prefer
the Bendix bleeders (3/8 incidentally). They've even got MB stars on them.
The PBR pads mated up nicely. I bought a bottle of Permatex brake pad grease on
Friday which is pretty terrific.
Everything bolted up slick as snot. I did forget to put the sensor block back
on one side so I've got to pull that wheel again but it'll be quick. Now on to
the rears again. I didn't put any grease on the pads back there and I figure
while the tools are out...

If I would just pony up the $20 or so it'd take to give it more than
its 384 MB of memory I'm sure it would run even better.

much. The tires make noise, again no big shocker. The steering wheel is
about 2 splines to the right, I'd taken it off when I did the dash pod last
and forgot to mark it first. I think those questionable looking ball joints
in the front are actually bad though I might have had a soft tire. Dwight
gave me some studded snows that'll go on soon.
The engine ran great, its hard to describe how different a 240D feels
compared to a 190D though, the 190D is much more refined, as it should be.
Clutch felt good, brakes felt great. One squeaked a bit but I'm sure that'll
quiet down with some use.
Came right up to temp and stayed there except when it heat soaked at the gas
station. I remember it doing that before. I should replace the coolant,
another thing on the list which had gotten shorter but now has extended
again.

For the first time ever Hammie has a proper 240D driver's carpet, its just a
bit darker than the interior of the car, more brown than tan, but it looks a
heck of a lot better than no carpet at all!
