Re: [MBZ] Had another low-power episode, '87 300TD
Dieselvolk, Third episode yesterday a.m. on the way to work. Same pattern: about 5 gallons left in the tank, cold morning (cold for the Low Country, that is, which is about 50 degrees). I have two new clear in-line filters and one new main filter in the car (Thanks Gary!) so I decided to see if I could make it to the parking lot at work, so I could change the in-line filter during my lunch break. I was able to drive about 5 miles and got within about 4 blocks before the engine died and would not restart. Took me about 10 minutes on the side of the road, in a light rain, to replace the in-line filter. Old filter was really plugged up with junk, probably dead fungus/mold from the tank because I administered a dose of biocide about two months ago. Once the air was purged, car ran like a top again. I'm still planning to change the tank strainer, just need to get my new E300 on the road first. More on that front in another email... Re: [MBZ] Had another low-power episode, '87 300TD
Mitch, I'm hoping that won't be the case. Car was rarely used for about one year, and had a very nearly full tank the whole time. It had been dosed with biocide by me at some point in the year or two before the long period of little use, and I didn't have this problem before, so I hope the bloom was not too large. Hope is not a good plan so I am prepared to clean the tank if needed. If this new filter plugs up pretty quickly, that'll be a good sign that Hope and Change my in-line filters was not enough If I do go that route, I think I'm going to try to clean the tank in-situ. I think that spraying water or some other cleaner from the gauge opening and the fill neck and the strainer opening will provide enough reach to get the sediment moving and flowing out the strainer hole, and then heating the tank for a few hours with a heat lamp or two will remove the water. Maybe a hairdryer blowing into the tank as well to keep the air moving around inside. I remember reading about someone who used this method successfully, so I'm going to give that a shot. Mine was a horrible mess, probably caused by trying to run the car on straight Chinese restaurant soy. I got a 20' vinyl hose and an electric pump. I already had a TP filter. Pumped it from the fuel supply line through the filter and back down the filler neck. Plugged the strainer that way. Pumped it from the filler neck through the fuel line to reverse flow the in tank strainer, which gave better results but the crap kept settling into the tank, so I'd periodically shake the car which would make the sheets of slime go up the hose. In a few days of messing with it I probably got rid of 3/4 of the crap. Removing the strainer and flushing with water probably would have worked better, but then I'd have a damp tank in a car I'm not driving. [MBZ] Progress report on my cheap E300 Diesel adventure
Dieselvolk, Wednesday past I had some time in the garage, so I pulled the injection pump from my new '95 E300 Diesel. Book says this is required in order to remove the injection timer, but I'm not convinced now that I've got it out. Looks like it would be fiddly to install a new injection timer with the pump in place, but I don't yet see that it would be impossible. Took about six hours (first time for me, so going slow and marking all the connections that are intuitive, frequently consulting the manual to make sure I didn't break anything too expensive) to get the injection pump out and clean it up a bit, and replace the seals/gaskets for bottom, side and rear plates. The bad news: the lock-down plates for three of the delivery valves have deep gouges where it appears someone used a hammer/chisel to loosen and then tighten the delivery valves down. So, I'll order a complete set of o-rings/springs/copper seals and be prepared to re-torque at least three of the delivery valves. Re: [MBZ] Progress report on my cheap E300 Diesel adventure
Did you get the name of his Indy? If so, add it to your 'run, don't walk away' list. Mitch, I didn't even ask. There were plenty of other indicators that this car had recently been poorly repaired and maintained like wrong color coolant, wrong size battery, generic-type upper radiator hose, missing under-body sound-encapsulation covers (didn't notice these were missing before I bought the car, would have been a good bargaining point, I may contact the PO to see if he knows where they could be). This car may become an albatross, I won't know until I get the vacuum pump / injection timer repair complete and can start trouble shooting the engine miss and low power issues. On the good side the body is solid and straight, interior is very nice (just needs a good deep cleaning), and the AC works, and the engine harness appears to be a replacement. I think I may need to spend another $100-odd for parts, spend a few more days putting them in, and then have a really nice third car. Time will tell. Well, you know it sort of depends on a number of issues - where you drove it, what you were using it for and what your expectations were. For example, we rented a Toyota Corolla a number of years ago in Victoria. I have not really wanted one of those, but I came away quite impressed with it. It ran nice and shifted very smoothly etc. It used almost no gas and it was a pleasure to use for a few days. I am still not really of a mind to acquire one but I would rent one again based upon that experience. Awesome in the sense that with an AT and the AC running most of the time, fuel economy was in the low 30s mpg for mostly hway driving over 5 days. I also liked the trouble free operation, no rattles, comfortable seats, and decent acceleration. True, I fell in love with my 300TDs on return... but it was nice driving a NEW car with all that hot shot technology. The only downside was nocruise control. [MBZ] 107 driveshaft flex disk
I did get the nut loose on the drive shaft by holding the nut with the smaller channellocks (14-15) and turning the shaft by the trans with the big ones. Didn't get much slide. Maybe 10 mm by prying on the shaft with the breaker bar. Not enough to get the new disk in. Tonight I managed to get the flex disk in between the trans flange and the driveshaft, buy dropping the rear of the trans, and prying between the trans and the driveshaft in addition to what i got from the slip joint.. I let the engine and trans hang from the motor mounts, but that was still not enough to get the flex plate in. It was about 4mm short. By prying, I got the disk in, and with more prying, I got the center of the shaft over the nub pin in the trans flange. Got everything bolted up tight. Got the rear trans mount bolted up to the pan/crossmember. I was going to take pictures of the welded crossmember/reinforcement below the driveshaft, but I had the aluminum shield bolted back up before i thought about taking a picture. You will have to trust me, that on this 1985 R107, at least, there is a welded reinforcing panel under the driveshaft. It has a cutout under the carrier bearing so you can get a hand in to the bolts for the carrier bearing. the cutout is not long enough to get wrenches on the slip joint nut straight on. the driveshaft could only come out is to drop the diff or pull the engine and trans. At least I don't have to pay $140 an hour for my time. The only way to change the trans filter is to remove the front part of the pan/crossmember. Since that is already off, I decided tomorrow's project is to change the trans filter and oil (and gasket). I hope flaps or the stealer will have one. -- 87 300SDL, 87 300D, 81 240D, 200D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Had another low-power episode, '87 300TD
Max, when one of my SDLs had the dead bug problem I added a second clear filter. I teed in a parallel second filter and pinched it shut with a pair of padded vice grips. When the engine started to lose power, I just released the vice grip and went on my way. Cleaned both filters at my leisure and reinstalled. It took about 18 months for it clean itself up.
