Outsourcing can be a good thing! What if you could gain a time advantage and
subsequently win in court (or whatever the market/arena is)? You give your
legal team new info at 5:00 p.m. Your lawyer sends it to Australia, where the
day is just beginning. They work their normal 8 hour day (which is when you
are
sleeping, as well as your competition), send it back, so you have a new legal
document when you get up at 6 a.m. You approve it, your lawyer presents your
side to the Judge at 10:00 a.m., the other side is still trying to get their
brief together. Judge gets impatient, other side feels the pressure and screws
up, and you win the case.

Re: [MBZ] 84 300D crazy heat

2011-02-11 Thread Max Dillon
Mike,

I'm more suspicious of your PBU now. If you did the power test, and found that
removing power resulted in full heat, now you need to test the monovalve
control
signal from the PBU, to see if defrost provides zero power to the monovalve or
if it is allowing some power to the monovalve. The peculiarities of monovalve
wiring escape me now, but I think that the PBU simply provides the ground path,
and cycles the ground signal. You'll need to verify that to determine how to
test (i.e. do you test for a ground signal or a power signal?).

My money would be on your discription, probably being closer to how such an
outsourcing model would work in the real world.

If a lawyer making $500+ per hour can't get his act together and arrive in
court prepared, this isn't a lawyer you want in your corner, regardless if
he runs to some dude in Australia or China for help. If your lawyer is
outsourcing stuff the day before you're due in court, sorry friend, you're

The more people you put between yourself and the work you're trying to get
done, the more chance for screw ups. Throw in language differences,
questionable reliability of communication systems, work ethics, and
outsourcing for anything of any importance is a disaster waiting to happen,
in my opinion. There is no money to be saved in the end, it's all a false
economy.

Remember what our parents taught us, you get what you pay for. As true

For me, I apply it to pretty much everything I can, and it's becoming
harder

and harder to do all the time. Example, I went to buy some dental floss
sticks tonight. Anything I eat or goes in my mouth, I always go with a
known name, thinking (wrongly) that such companies would still wish to
manufacture in the US, or some other developed nation. Everything on the
shelf, and I mean, every product was made in China! Come on America, has
your industry got to the point where you can't string a piece of dental
floss over a plastic toothpick??

And I don't buy all this crap about it can be made cheaper offshore. I
looked at some collared t-shirts for women the other day. Brand name,
made

in China, $68.00 !!! Somebody please tell me with a straight face, you
couldn't make a collared t-shirt, pay an America a decent wage to stitch
it

together, with materials sourced domestically, for less than $68.00, and
still make money faster than you could spend it.

I love America, I think it's one of the best countries in the world, but I
think she needs to have a good look at the road she's going down, and get
her act together, while she's still in a position to do so! Every time
you
reach for your wallet, demand to get what you want, from where you want
it,

nothing less.

Overpriced for sure. Bumpers a matter of taste---I don't think the
big black DOT bumpers are anywhere near the aesthetic offense on the
123 that they are on the 116 and 107. I agree about the seats--- I
had that blue plaid fabric in my Euro 280SLC and it was scratchy and
didn't breathe well. But they could be re-covered, or Tex ones

Well, Andrew, this looks like an exact replica of my 300TD. In fact, the
old ticker did a little leap seeing this one advertised.

Except mine is RHD, 85K miles lighter on the odo, 5-spd manual,
non-turbo (sigh), has Euro headlights, and is in way better condition

This one still looks pretty good to me, despite the wear and tear. The

I wouldn't mind getting just the reserve ($US4,950) for mine!

Manual heat and AC is a big plus to me. You get heat and ac that
works without the high $ maintenance of the ACCII system Overall it
is not a bad car, and if I needed one, I would consider it. Not hard
to put blue MBtex seats in, or new covers. 300K on a 617 is up
there, but with all the service records, the car is worth a lot more.

So what is worth? 3K? If you bought one for 3k and then spent 100
hours and $1500 worth of parts, you have $4500 and 100 hours of time
to get it into the condition of this one. (Not that is is perfect,
but it is not bad either.) You have a $4500 car with 100 hours.
What is your time worth, not to mention mileage to track down parts,
take it to a shop, go back to get it, etc? If your time is worth
$10,000 a year, that is 5 bucks an hour. So you have $5000 in a car
if your time is worth only $5 an hour. Not many people will work for
$5/hr.

The cheapest MB you can find, may be the most expensive one you find.
(yes, you can take that 2 ways, and both are valid.) You can quote
me.

A $5k 123 wagon is not a bad deal if it is solid and a 26 yr old car
doesn't scare you.

I have paid top dollar and had cheap MBs
I have paid bottom dollar and had expensive MBs
And I paid mid to high dollar and had a very expensive MB on one.

But they could be re-covered, or Tex ones
swapped from another car. Aren't the manual climate controls a big
plus?

Agreed... I don't really see anything too bad about this car. The price is
a bit high considering the mileage, but from what I've seen lately, this is
one of the nicer wagons on the market. Good service and owner documentation
its very valuable here. Despite the sour deals made in Florida, this one
looks and sounds pretty legit.

The car is certainly a turbodiesel... they were offered in europe. This is
a great example of one. Last model year, euro spec... sign me up!

MB cloth seats are pretty cool, but fade badly as you can see in this car.
Once upon a time I had a euro 300D with green cloth... I found it quite
comfortable and really enjoyed it:

Re: [MBZ] No cable

2011-02-11 Thread Walt Zarnoch
Easier way.

Get the longest powered usb extension cable you can buy.
Plug in a QUALITY usb wifi adapter, with an external antenna port.
Add one high-gain yagi.

Alternatively, you can use a usb-ethernet adapter instead, then use
100 meters of cat5, a small router with a solar panel+battery, 2 good
yagi's, and the firmware setup for rx on one, tx on the other.

That should give you length enough.

There's also circular patch antenna's and a 15 foot sat dish as well ;)

Walt, who's done some stuff like this before.

[MBZ] OT a mac question

So I have this imac on the network, and a macbook sometimes, and a
winders compooter, and I can see files on the winders compooter from the
imac and grab those files, but can't see the imac from the winders
compooter. I want to be able to see files on the imac from the winders
machine, and grab them to do various things to them. How do I do that?
I tried at some point to write a file on the winders machine from the
imac, and got some sort of error message telling me I couldn't do that
for some obscure reason.

[MBZ] W126 seats

2011-02-11 Thread Hans Neureiter
I opened up a can of worms!
Owning this car for over 20 years, the power seats never worked, except the
for/aft on the drivers seat.
Well, that too quit. The seats are totally destroyed as far as leather goes.
So I decided to do some exploratory investigation as to what it will take to
make it a little better.
So far I found it'sa PITA to remove the (drivers) seat. Rear bolts are
visible but hardly accesible.
Found long lost trasures under that seat, though.
Wiring tested fine but tripplepack motors were all dead. All tests, like
binding, continuity of armature, short of armature, etc showed no fault.
Can't screw up something that's alredy broken, I took the gizmo out and took
it apart.
No appearent signs of failure. Commutators clean, brushes good, windings
with out discoloration.
Tested again for shorts, open circuits (each one of the buggers has an
overload breaker).

I can't throw nothing away without making sure it's useless.
How to get these three worms back in the can?
It's one thing to get the commutator between the brushes, all three of them
But sliding the 3-barrel permanent magnet stator over them.(the magnet
acts like a oppinionated supersucker).
A piece of wood, 3 pieces of wire cut to lenght worms are back in the
can.
After all that, not that I fixed anything, All 3 motors ZZZUM.
Where is the fourth motor? (Backrest)

Did you shake the monovalve insert enough to see that its plunger

If your engine temperature gauge is solid you do _not_ have

No, I sold it to some stupid kid. It needed a clutch and I told him so... I
saw him a year later and he hadn't done it yet but the car was for sale
again.

Its was a good beater, but not a really nice car. I used it for commuting
for about a year after I bought a 240D and realized that one hill on the way
to work was a bit too much for it. I don't mind the slow acceleration of
the 240D, but if I can't maintain speed on the highway during rush hour I
can't deal with it. Previously I drove one for about 5 years, but my
commute was flat then.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Netflix

2011-02-11 Thread Tim C
We use PlayOn (playon.tv); they recently restructured pricing such that it
is $40/year-ish, including support. Basically it is a DLNA server that
converts online video in real time and streams it as high -bandwidth MPEG2
within the house network. The PC is in the basement, and then we have PS3s
(with the media remotes, so it is a lot like a Tivo) on the TVs as DLNA
clients. Any other DLNA client should work as well.

For us a big advantage to PlayOn (aside from formal support) is that one
server can serve multiple TVs, so SWMBO can watch upstairs while kids watch
downstairs. (Another advantage I was not expecting: since the kids know they
can watch show X whenever, they wind up not watching at all. We did not get
this benefit from Tivo, though I'm not sure why it is different.)

There is a plug in for German content, so there might also be Italian; you
can look at playonplugins.com.

That written, since you have the computer on the (only?) TV already, you
might rather look at Boxee or XBMC. One of them might be the better
solution for your setup.

I have no affiliation with anyone who makes money from any of the above
companies, just a happy customer.

-Tim
Who must admit that, while life is more interesting, it is much harder to
keep the house clean when the children do not watch television.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Nice engine

2011-02-11 Thread Dieselhead
Interesting. It would be nice to have that available as an MB Diesel
some year. The other application I see is my long wanted BMW Diesel
boxer motorcycle, as a very small engine. Bet it is a screamer as a
two cycle engine! And I thought Jimmy diesels were screamers. IF
this is as high rpm as they say as a two cycle, it might sound like a
glow fuel model airplane engine on steroids.

It would also make for a good mid engine van or sports car.

Re: [MBZ] 300TD in FL - I could just b*rf

2011-02-11 Thread glenn brown

Agreed, the asking price is too high for this vehicle especially considering
the 300K mileage. I like the exterior color as it's the same as my '84 300D,
and I recently acquired an '85 300TD from my brother w/ 178K on the odo, but
the manual heat/AC controls would be great as I'm not a big fan of the dreaded
PBU, etc. as I've been living with maximum heat output no matter where the temp
thumbwheel of the PBU is set in my '84 300D for the past 2-3 years and the J.
Cathey diagnostic procedure hasn't helped. And, weren't all the '85 300TDs
turbodiesels?

 Easier way.

Get the longest powered usb extension cable you can buy.
Plug in a QUALITY usb wifi adapter, with an external antenna port.
 Add one high-gain yagi.

For use at work, I purchased a USB extender that has two boxes with a
pair of fiber-optic cables between them. IIRC, you can go several
kilometers between them.

Educate me, please. What is FYA?
We are allowed much latitude to be off-topic from MB here - it fosters
brotherhood comraderie. Sometimes that is necessary beyond merely
 technical discussions...
