Which one. If it matches the car speed, then it's after the
transmission or the transmission output. If it matches the
engine speed, then it's before the transmission or the
transmission input.

In other words, does the pitch change if you downshift?

If the pitch changes with _car_ speed - yes. Differential is a
high probability. In addition to the speed of the driveshaft,
the differential has gears with, say 20 or more teeth. So if
these teeth strike noisily, the rate is much faster than the
driveshaft, so it becomes a (relatively) high pitched whine.

> Rear axle?

Axle shafts? Not likely. Because these are after the
differential, they turn 2-3 times slower than the driveshaft and
differential. This means the sound is usually more of a growl,
or grind, or even a vibration - but usually not fast enough to
have a pitch high enough to call it a whine.

> Driveshaft? U joint bearing??

Possible - but not very likely. Not the sort of sound they
usually make when mis-behaving.

> Gear in the transmission (although the shifting is smooth with no
> flaring or slipping).

This is a possibility. Flaring and slipping are problems with
the hydraulics and clutches (control) of the transmission. A
whine would be from the gears. The gears could explode while
shifting smoothly with no flare. And because gears have lots of
teeth, the possibility for high-pitch whine is there. But I
think it's less likely than the differential.

> I should also add that all fluid levels are normal and the
> transmission fluid is red and clean, not burnt.

That again is a characteristic of the _control_ of the
transmission. Metal shavings in the bottom of the pan is would
be an indication that the gears might be in trouble.

Did you check the differential fluid? Both level and condition?

Figure out what the moment arm is for your weight to generate between 200

Dad used tp torque the prop bolt on the radial engine by having me do a chin

Today I heard the onset of a very prominent whining noise in my 300TD that
gets louder under load. Seems to come from the rear but not 100 percent
certain. It gets VERY loud going up hills, accompanied by an ominous
grinding sound under load while driving uphill. The whining varies in pitch
that roughly matches engine/car speed. We made it home OK but I am really
spooked and unwilling to drive it again without a consensus diagnosis from

Gear in the transmission (although the shifting is smooth with no flaring
or slipping). I should also add that all fluid levels are normal and the
transmission fluid is red and clean, not burnt.

[MBZ] From the action

2011-08-13 Thread Dieselhead
The Christian Sci Monitor, normally a somewhat unbiased rag did an
article about the food at the straw poll. See
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2011/0813/Forget-about-votes-at-the-straw-poll.-Who-had-the-best-food

Bachman did a good job of providing appropriate fare. Corndogs and
Hot beef sundaes. Pawlenty grilled hamburgers until they ran out.
Hard to miss with hamburgers! Running out seemed to be the order of
the day, as the crowd was large, perhaps a record. Santorum had
hamburgers and more if my memory is correct, but the hit seemed to be
peach jam. The peach jam was later reported to be from Santorum's
own peach tree. Herman served Godfather's pizza. Seems appropriate.

What the CS monitor left out completely, is the food served at the
Ron Paul area. Yes, while other candidates had a tent, and some
didn't even have a tent, Ron Paul's campaign had a region with lots
of tents, and all were filled with people. When I first walked
through, Paul was speaking, and they had a tent with a grill set up,
but nothing on it. I overheard that they could not find hamburger
buns. It seemed to be sponsored by a veterans group on behalf of the
Paul campaign. The next tent had fritos they were handing out. the
third tent had pop and water. Then there was a stage tent, with lots
of open air seats. to the East of the stage tent was a large tent
that seemed to be for people to eat the non-existent hot dogs.

I saw someone eating corn on the cob, and asked where they got it.
They said the large ten south of the large sidewalk was all food from
Ron Paul. They also said the line was long but moved fast. I went
around the tent to try to find the end of the line, and it was long
because Ron Paul had just finished speaking, so most Paulistas were
already in line. Trucks at the site said "Hilton Garden inn
Catering." I figured that was good news, because when the hotel
opened, they lured Master Chef Ken Dunn away form his won business,
to run the hotel restaurant. The long line did move fast, and when I
got to the head, they said there were 8 lines. Aha! An experienced
caterer like Ken knows how to feed large groups fast. The food
consisted of potato salad, BBQ'd sweet corn, Baked beans, and veggie
baked beans, and 3 pans of pulled pork BBQ with buns. Everything was
really good! There was also a dessert table with brownies and
cookies.

I thought the most outstanding food related event was the thousands
fed quickly at the Ron Paul section with good local food, and the CS
Monitor completely ignored the fantastic effort put forth by Chef Ken
Dunn. Of course the CS Monitor was not alone in ignoring the Ron
Paul campaign. Local and national TV news around the time the
results of the straw poll were announced, showed clips of every
campaign tent or display except the Ron Paul region. One report did
show the "Dollar slide" at the corner of the Ron Paul region, but the
report had nothing to do with Ron Paul.

The national and local news on the TV networks dutifully announced
that Michelle Bachmann won with 4800, and showed pictures of the
Bachman bus and tent, and interviewed supporters. Ten they said Paul
was second with 4600, and that Pawlenty was third with ~1600, then
showed the Pawlenty supporters, food lines, and interviewed
supporters. Ditto for Santorum, who placed fourth. Cain was ignored
the same as Paul.

To the East of the Ron Paul food tent, there were several more tents
offering buttons, fans and other paraphernalia related to the
campaign.

I should also mention that after I had some of Chef Ken Dunn's
excellent food, I did see that the hotdogs and buns were found, and
there were several lines for them.

I walked back North to see if I could get a corndog from the Bachmann
campaign. I was astounded by how long the line was. The Pawlenty
and Santorum lines were really long too, but nowhere near as many
people as in the Bachmann line. Based on the food lines, I figured
Bachmann would do well in the Straw poll, and in spite of the
relatively short wait for food at the Ron Paul region, Again based on
food lines, I figured both Paul and Bachmann would do well. After I
walked around and looked at displays and campaigns, I found the
Bachmann line was probably 200 to 300 yards long, reaching from in
front of Scheman, to the North steps of the Coliseum, and back around
to the northwest again.

I did not go in and listen to the speeches, but from reports I heard,
Congressman Steve King (not a candidate) had a great speech, and it
was generally reported that Herman Cain delivered the best speech of
the day.

My take on the whole thing: Follow the old John Denver song: "Throw
out the tv..." The reports are at best misleading, and at worst,
downright fictitious.

And about running out: Most camps ran out of t shirts. Several ran
out of food. Bachmann had run out of tshirts by ~11 am. Paul was
running low b

You are getting a true view of the only vista that software has available:
a big, rusty dumpster on a seedy alley of ramshackle, disintegrating,
graffiti-covered brick buildings. Chuck it in the dumpster and be done

Re: [MBZ] OT: LED bulb tear-down now mini-splits

2011-08-13 Thread LWB250
We use the Mitsubishi split units at work for data frame/server room retrofits.
We'll add servers and/or a data frame to an interior room, usually a small
closet or equipment room, and the heat load from the hardware will quickly
overpower whatever airflow is available.  We can go far enough away with the
condensor that location usually isn't an issue.

They work well and have been relatively trouble free.  Worst problem I've had
to-date was with a balky thermostat that would not allow the unit to power back
up after a power failure.  Of course, we get alarms from the servers within a
few minutes as they begin to overheat.

There are a bunch of manufacturers, I think I am going with an LG unit, 36k BTU
and 4 head units (2x 9k and 2x 12k).  Cost for that package will be about $4k
(probably will be more by the time I get around to buying and installing it --
sh*t it has already gone up!!!).
http://www.goductless.com/LG-Air-conditioner-Ductless-Mini-Split-Heat-Pumps-p/11436.htm

Fairly easy to put in, you need to run the refrigerant lines, a power line to
the compressor, power/comm lines to each head unit from the compressor, and a
drain for each head unit.  Then pull a vac on the head lines and open up the
lines to each unit, charge is in the compressor.  These are popular in Europe
and I am seeing lots more of them around.  Compact, quiet, and very efficient.
I have seen lots of LG units now that I am tuned to look at them.

I have a project blog, I post pics and updates as I get things done.

Re: [MBZ] OT: LED bulb tear-down

2011-08-13 Thread LWB250
In this part of the country, a heat pump water heater makes a lot of sense,
since water heaters are typically installed in the garage, which, even in the
coldest months, is well above 60F (or more.)  Right now, with ambient temps in
the mid 90s, it's not unrealistic to expect temperatures in the garage to be
even higher.  Park a couple of cars in there that were just driving around and
close the door, and you're really cranking up the heat.

I would not expect one of these to generate enough cool air to cool the garage,
but it certainly can't hurt in dropping the heat load somewhat.

My biggest concern is finding a place for the condensate to drain, as the water
heater in the house we're currently working on buying is right in the middle of
the back wall.  You couldn't get farther from the doors or side walls than
where it currently sits.

I haven't had a chance to check, but it's possible there is an expansion joint
in the concrete slab nearby. I can't imagine the volume of water from this
thing to be significant enough to not be able to drain down a crack in the
expansion joint (remember, everything around here is sand, so once it gets
through the slab, it's on it's way.)

One of the really nice things about buying this water heater from Lowe's is
that they routinely sell it for almost $300 off list ($1600-$300=$1300) and
they offer a 12 year warranty for $80.

Between the reduced electrical consumption and the tax credits, I can't see
this being a bad deal...

I always said that if you could efficiently manage the thermodynamics
in a bakery, you could make a fortune. Refrigerators and freezers
for ingredients and display, air conditioning for
danish/croissant/cake decorating rooms, heat and humidity for
proofing, and more heat for baking.

Std. practice is to dump refr heat outside and burn fuel for heat.

It transfers the heat normally radiated from the condenser coil at your AC
system [the outside part of the unit, normally setting on the ground in a
split system] into the water heater via a "heating coil" so your cold water
becomes the cooling agent instead of atomosphere. Thus, you make warm water
instead of warmer air.

Same type of heat recovery can be used for ice maker, wine chiller, or any
other heat transfer type cooling scheme in common use today. All it takes is
$$.

[MBZ] ot computer shuting down update

2011-08-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
So it appears the shutting down problem was the XP hard drive itself.
If I have power plugged into it, vista drive starts up and shuts down
the computer off. Sometimes it will try to run a scan disk on the 2nd
drive and it starts it but gets part way thru and shuts down. If I
leave power off the drive it runs fine, its running fine now. Never seen
a drive shut off a computer like that. I still have many files on it I
would like to move over to the main hard drive. Is there some sort of
cable adaptor you can buy to hook an internal drive externally to a USB
port and maybe I can try it that way?

Re: [MBZ] OM617 crankshaft bolt

2011-08-13 Thread Dieselhead
I may be a bit out of the norm, but i'd say your old bolt did not
back out, but broke. I would lube with neverseize and put the bolt
in. I have always cranked on them until the engine just starts to
turn, then repeat 3-4 times. I have never had one back out.

Allan Streib writes:

Now, any tips on R/R of the front crank seal? I have a new seal and
spacer from Rusty. Should it just pry out or do I need some kind of
 puller?

Well it does pry out easily enough. I am glad Rusty sent a new spacer,
the one that was there was cracked in two places!

Progressing now in installing new spacer, seal, and the balancing disc.
I've heard it's a bit fiddly to get the disc on the crank with the pin
slots lined up just right.

Book says to lube the crank bolt and torqe to 270 - 330 NM. I had been
thinking of using blue loc-tite on that bolt since it came loose once
before, but guess not?

My torque wrench only goes to 200 NM. Should I get one that will go
higher or just go to 200 and finish with a breaker bar and guess?

I think it is 75ft per head unit. The limiting factor is probably the
amount of charge in the system and various losses from pumping stuff
further.

Autozone will loan me one that goes up to 250. Torque indications at
the limit of the wrench tend to have a larger margin of error, but that
I'd think with the range of the spec I should be safe.

Re: [MBZ] OT: LED bulb tear-down

2011-08-13 Thread G Mann
It transfers the heat normally radiated from the condenser coil at your AC
system [the outside part of the unit, normally setting on the ground in a
split system] into the water heater via a "heating coil" so your cold water
becomes the cooling agent instead of atomosphere. Thus, you make warm water
instead of warmer air.

Same type of heat recovery can be used for ice maker, wine chiller, or any
other heat transfer type cooling scheme in common use today. All it takes is
$$.

If google the product name and "review" you'll fond a number of sites where
actual owners from all over the US give their opinions.

I doubt it would produce enough cold air to be effective, but down here
anything to take the edge off temperature-wise would be nice.

Between the tax credit and spiffs from the local utility, I can get the cost
pretty close to a high end conventional water heater.

Blue Loctite, I'm fairly sure, won't work with lubed surfaces. The lube
allows increased longitudinal force on the bolt (greater clamping force)
for the same amount of torque.

That spec is 199 - 243 ft-lbf. Since you have had problems with it

Fairly easy to put in, you need to run the refrigerant lines, a power
line to the compressor, power/comm lines to each head unit from the
compressor, and a drain for each head unit. Then pull a vac on the head
lines and open up the lines to each unit, charge is in the compressor.
These are popular in Europe and I am seeing lots more of them around.
Compact, quiet, and very efficient. I have seen lots of LG units now
that I am tuned to look at them.

I have a project blog, I post pics and updates as I get things done.

Re: [MBZ] OT: LED bulb tear-down now mini-splits

2011-08-13 Thread Rich Thomas
There are a bunch of manufacturers, I think I am going with an LG unit,
36k BTU and 4 head units (2x 9k and 2x 12k). Cost for that package will
be about $4k (probably will be more by the time I get around to buying
and installing it -- sh*t it has already gone up!!!).
http://www.goductless.com/LG-Air-conditioner-Ductless-Mini-Split-Heat-Pumps-p/11436.htm

Re: [MBZ] OM617 crankshaft bolt

2011-08-13 Thread Allan Streib
Well I got the stub of the crank bolt out today, finally. I think my
left-hand drill bit had dulled to the point of ineffectiveness, so I
switched to a right-hand bit and the stub immediately turned in. I
jammed a screwdriver into the drilled-out center of the stub and was
able to back it all the way out. I then ran a tap into the crank bore
to clear/straighten the threads. I tried the new bolt and it turned in
smoothly with no snags so I'm hoping I'm good to go there.

Now, any tips on R/R of the front crank seal? I have a new seal and
spacer from Rusty. Should it just pry out or do I need some kind of
puller?

Not always, e.g. a dealer may already have a surplus of that model on
the used lot and not want to hold any more in inventory. But in general
I think you are right. I once asked a local used car dealer what they
actually did to their vehicles once they arrived from auction, i.e. did
they change fluids, do any kind of inspection, etc. and to my surprise
he was honest and said they don't do anything except wash them and put
them on the lot.

A lot of the geothermal heat pumps have water-heating built in or as an add-on.

On the topic of the subject, I have had very good success with
Philips-brand CFLs from Sam's Club, for both quality and longevity. I
have not had good success with
store-brand/bottom-end/boxes-that-advertise-greenness CFLs.

Glad to hear LEDs are improving, I still have a soft spot for CREE.

Not sure but I do remember that at the first place I worked (McDonalds)
they used the waste heat from the ice maker and drink chiller condensors

more about the actual economics than the "green-ness" of the idea.

Many of the newer homes down here like ours use a boatload of recessed
lighting, which is not only inefficient in some respects, but generates a
significant heat load. Add this to the work the AC has to do to keep the house
cool, and you're looking at some significant savings by going to LED.

I like what I see so far in the PAR30 style lamps, but damn, they are
expensive! I am figuring about $40-$45 per lamp right now, even if I buy them
in quantity.

Much like CFLs, I have a lot of concerns about longevity. I was always
diligent about keeping receipts for my CFLs after I had a rash of failures.

The light given off by the PAR30 lamps (equivalent to 65W floodlamps) is a nice
soft white, although you can find different lamps with various light
temperatures. I don't care about the dimmable part, as these are mostly task
lighting in a kitchen area, so they will be either on or off.

Both of the major home centers (Lowes & Home Despot) have these on display and
for purchase, so you can go in and see them in action, which I would encourage
you to do if you haven't already.

On a related note, has anyone here got or seen one of the heat pump water
heaters? I'm looking at those, too. The GE model looks pretty promising, with
the tax credits and lower energy costs. They are most efficient in warmer
climates, so they're even better down here

Re: [MBZ] 124 timing case

2011-08-13 Thread Max Dillon
Well, the rail has some play at the top, so I'm convinced that the right
thing to do is replace it. Failure of this rail would probably destroy the
engine.

Does anyone have the locking tool for the starter ring gear? I need that to
secure the crankshaft so I can remove the crank balancer. Tightening torque
on that beast is 200Nm plus a 90 degree turn. I suppose it is not too
expensive to buy, looks like a little piece of metal that bolts into the
starter hole once the starter is pulled. Maybe I can fashion something...

Do you have any more information on the subject?

Your best bet is a rebuilt from
Rusty.

Before you give up on the "old"
trans., call Sun Valley Mercedes
Dismantlers, Sun Valley, CA and
describe the symptoms and attempted

cures. They are the best trans
diagnosticians in this hemisphere.
Rusty is the best source for a
rebuilt trans. They are rebuilt by

Sun Valley.

Re: [MBZ] 124 timing case

2011-08-13 Thread Dieselhead
That is 01-210. You lift up the front of the engine to get out the
pan bolts that go into the chain cover.

There is a procedure on the 124 CD, it calls for lifting the engine
with a hoist at one point. I hope this doesn't turn into a nightmare.

I looked at the 05 section (timing chain) at DaveM's site. it sounds
like the lower pin is fixed and you pull the banana rail off the pin
after you take off the chain case. (01-210) Funny thing, under the
124/OM603, there is no 01-210. I found it under the 126 section.
Sounds like a good day's project. Good Luck!

My paper copy of the parts manual shows the pin as a separate part,
but in the picture it's different from the pins for the upper rail
which have the threaded hole for the extractor.

Well, the book is likely to be right, since I never changed one on an

That's good news if there is a pin to pull, service manual says to
remove the cover but I'll take a look to see if I can find a pin.

Brothers,

I'm considering pulling off the timing case cover on my '87 wagon so
that I can
replace the chain guides. Anyone BTDT? How tough is it to pull off the
crankshaft damper? What sealant do I use to put it all back together? Any
hints/tips/gotchas to be aware off? I know that Dave M. did this
job once long
ago, and I recall that he really didn't enjoy it very much at all.

The upper guide which I've already loosened has a small hole
indicating it is
getting brittle, and the guide that the chain tensioner pushes on
seems to be
cocked and not contacting with the tensioner squarely, so I suspect it has
started failing and I really should replace it as long as I'm this
far into the
process.

WHOA... with the amount of money this guy has spent on tools, he could have
stocked several new transmissions just in case. Wow!

Re: [MBZ] E300 fuel consumption and fuel filters

I've probably done about 8 or 10 long highway trips, so I know that 31 is about
average.

How much before data do you have? I feel comfortable making a mileage statement
after 4 tanks.

And considering that I feel comfortable saying my '84 190D 2.2l auto averages
~37mpg. My '85 190D 2.2l 5spd averaged 38mpg over 90,000 miles so I think its
fair to say (since my '84 has around half the mileage of the '85) that the auto
costs you around 1mpg... ;)

Dieselvolk,

A few weeks ago I made a trip to DC and back. Usually on that trip I get about
31 or 32 mpg, but this time I only got 27.4 mpg on the way up, and before that
I'd noticed that the fuel consumption around town had increased. Decided to
test the theory about filters, and changed both the main filter and the
pre-filter before my return trip. Mileage did improve to 30.1 mpg on the way
home. Can that be attributed to the fuel filter? Don't know, need more data,
comparing mileage from just two tanks of fuel from different stations is not
valid due to possible differences in the fuel.
