[MBZ] Fwd: Mercedes E320 ($995)

2012-03-19 Thread Dieselhead
This is a dark green first year E320 (94) Known lineage is St.
Looie, via Kleb, to me, then to the C.O. No rust as of the last I
saw it. If anyone is interested let me know and I will return
contact info to you.

A couple years back we purchased a Mercedes E320 from you. We are
now planning to sell the car and wanted to check and see if you'd
have any interest since you are able to do much of the work
yourself. Since the purchase we put all new tires on it, other than
that it's pretty much the same as it was. The primary engine issue
is a slow oil leach from the right front of the engine, which needs
some kind of gasket repair. At the point we list the car for sale
on craigslist we'll probably start at $995, but we'd be willing to
consider an offer.

Other than described, does the car have any other issues that you can recall?

(I realize you are not the current owner and can't vouch for them.)

Thanks,

[MBZ] S210 4matic update.

2012-03-19 Thread Mitch Haley
I finally decided I like the wagon. Got the rack boot from Rusty and installed
it last week so I could start driving it again. Hydro oil is low, but it's been
at the same level since I first noticed it 300 miles ago.

I put the scangauge in it and used it to take the kid back to her foster parents
yesterday. Filled it at the same pump going there and coming back, put in 4.05
gallons for 127 miles, scangauge said 4.0 gallons, so I guess it gets along fine
with the E320 computer without any calibration, and I'm happy with 31+ mpg at
60+mph, that's the best I've gotten from any Mercedes product, and a solid 25%
better than the 190E. I can't detect any difference in spark advance or MPG as
displayed on the scangauge when running 100% 93 octane or 2/3 93 octane and 1/3
87 octane. I'll just keep increasing the percentage of regular in the tank until
the scangauge says it's retarding the timing, but I'll probably end up running
it on a 50/50 mix, or just buy the midgrade stuff.

The autoparking passenger mirror and I still don't like each other, but I've
learned that if I keep the mirror adjuster set for the driver's side it never
activates. In theory, it's supposed to tilt the mirror down when you back up,
and then tilt it back up when you drive off. In practice, it jams the mirror all
the way down and leaves it there. Getting a close up view of some gravel with no
part of the car in the picture does not help me to back up.

THe armrest cover was pretty ugly. The console lid had something
wrong as I recall, but mechanically, it was ok. Cat was replaced
with an ugly pipe with ugly welds. Looked good.

I got it for #1 Daughter to drive in the winter. When she moved
south, I sold it. I have sometimes wished I had kept it, but still
have way too many vehicles.

I'd guess it could be driven to FL.

You might want to get an oil test to see what exactly is leaching out of

Has been parked for quite a while; I don't know if it will run
now but I'm told it's worth more than junk prices so come
take a look, it might not need much to get it back on the
 road. Odometer says 191648.

Well, it's not an '85, so that raises it's value.  To bad it's
 so far away.

We have discussed this before. *smiles* I think Loren agrees
with me too.

Basically, the 1985 model add a bunch of unnecessary junk that
clutters the engine bay and complicates troubleshooting. And it
doesn't improve durability, so far as I can tell - it simply
improves the feel.

I have W123s from '78 to '85 and the '85s are my least
favorite. I be happy to trade my beater '85 TD for a similar
'81-'84.

Or better yet, a 15+ year old Mercedes-built car that seats 7+
with all seats facing forward. And has a hood. (I despise
working on vans...)

The photo shows how obstructed the oil passage was with red RTV gunk.
still a lot of RTV on the turbo after I pulled a massive amount off.
What I pulled off can be seen in the background of the photo with the

Bolt holes are 8mm. top to bottom of the machined surface is maybe 2

I don't write manuals. I don't have a photographer standing by. You
are lucky that I think enough of y'all to try to clean up and take a
few pitchurs ; )

I admit it would be nice to have a good writeup with pictures, but
when I am covered with black Diesel crankcase oil mixed with road
dirt, I am not much in the mood for photography.

I found precious little to go by, so there is a need for a good manual.

Maybe from a rarity perspective but a lot of changes made many parts
non-interchangeable with 81-84 models.

Huh? Conventional wisdom says that 1985 is the MOST valuable 300TD
due to the indistructible transmission and the fact that it was the
last of the line...

Has been parked for quite a while; I don't know if it will run
now but I'm told it's worth more than junk prices so come
take a look, it might not need much to get it back on the
 road. Odometer says 191648.

Well, it's not an '85, so that raises it's value.  To bad it's
 so far away.

Re: [MBZ] 603 turbo WAS:smokin SDL

2012-03-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Silicone sealant in places where it should not be used is a sign of a
very poor mechanic. My buddy the MB guy rejected a rebuilt 420 once,
had orange silicone all over. He refused to install it, said it was
an absolute certainty that nothing was right with it. Cost $4500, too.

There is no need to use ANY sealant on that gasket. It's probably
like the one for my brother's 75 300D -- comes from the factory with
adhesive on both sides protected by silicone release paper. Peel,
stick, and tighten, that's all, but some genius decided half a tube
of RTV was necessary instead. Of course, it all squeezed out into
the oil line, and piled up on the feed orifice and starved the turbo
of oil, so it failed in short order.

There are only a few places on any MB engine that I know of that use
RTV -- upper pan on some models (not the 603, it has a gasket), upper
chain case cover on the M103, occasional covers for things. Almost
always black RTV in a very small (1/8 or less bead) amount on
machined surfaces, never on gaskets of any kind. Only other sealant
used is permatex paint-on stuff for thermostat housings on older
engines. Newer ones have o-ring seals, no sealant required.

The photo shows how obstructed the oil passage was with red RTV gunk.
still a lot of RTV on the turbo after I pulled a massive amount off.
What I pulled off can be seen in the background of the photo with the
turbo. The other photo is a closup of the rtv I pulled off.

Re: [MBZ] 603 turbo WAS:smokin SDL

2012-03-19 Thread Dieselhead
I have been a fan of the blue permatex in small quantities. as in
put a little on your finger and rub it on the surface. It takes
almost none to work well. I have seen frod dealers smear way too
much black RTV on everything in sight.

Many times the blue goo has bailed me out when I needed an extra
hand to hold a gasket in place, or didn't have a gasket.

I never liked the red stuff because it is not as easy to just rub on
a minuscule amount. The good Dr. Booth didn't like any, and on MBs,
I rarely use any. I disagree on an outright ban on silicon based
sealants.

Marshall always said not to use that stuff. Guess he was right again.
