I'd try using Audacity to do the conversion, it should obey the CUE file

Re: [MBZ] Car breakin

2012-03-25 Thread Dieselhead

Wilton,

Sorry to hear about the lowlife ruining both cars. Too bad you
didn't greet him/them with Mr C olt's Model 19 11.

Swift justice tends to decrease such activity.

Some sorry SOB broke into both of my cars last night probably about
10 to 10:30pm. About that time, I heard three muffled bumps.
'Thought it was "neighbor" activity at some condominiums to my west.
SWMBO went out to cars at 1PM today and found the damages to both.
Black 91 350SDL has broken rear "windshield," broken left rear
window, broken center console sliding door (it wasn't even locked),
and severely bent/distorted trunk lid; interior of car ransacked.
White 87 300D has broken right rear little triangular window, three
pry marks along lower edge of trunk; lower panel at rear of trunk
lid slightly distorted; interior ransacked. 'Don't think the SOB
gained entry to the trunks - their interiors appear untouched.
'Don't think anything of value was taken from either car. Other
than my mobility scooter in 300D trunk, I try not to leave anything
of value in the cars. The stupid SOB did not seem to realize that
after he had unlocked either of the front doors on both cars, all he
needed to do to enter trunks was to punch the trunk buttons.
SOB also broke into outbuilding/shop; 'took several hand tools and
tried to take John Deere lawn tractor - probably left it because of
2 flat tires and a locking cable with master lock on it.

[MBZ] E320 oil change

2012-03-25 Thread Mitch Haley
Finally got around to changing out the 5w30 Valvoline synthetic that the PO had
in my 4matic.

Removed the oil filter cap with a 76mm 14 point socket (fit a bit loose but did
the job, and that plastic lid was tight) Boy, that's the longest stem I've ever
seen. Took four of the five o-rings that came with my fleece filter from Q.

Hooked up the super sucker to the dipstick tube, and it started slurping air/oil
mix with only about a gallon of oil in the bucket. I thought that every engine
designed since the 1970s had a dipstick tube that went to the bottom of the pan?

Had to crawl under and remove the drain bolt from the SIDE of the pan (probably
leaving a cup or a pint of dirty oil in the pan) to get the other gallon out.
Torqued the drain bolt to 30nm. Too bad I didn't have a new crush washer, but I
wasn't planning on pulling the drain plug. Job was made easier by whoever was
kind enough to remove and throw away my belly pans before I bought the car.

Dumped my last two 4qt jugs of 5w40 M1 turbo diesel truck down the huge hole the
oil filter came out of. Easy target, no spills. Installed the filter and torqued
the plastic filter stem to 25nm. Oil level is closer to full than to add, either
because I left some oil in the pan or because you don't really need 8 liters.

Reset the FSS (flexible service system) and the job was done.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Brakes

2012-03-25 Thread Dieselhead
May just be that one has ATE and the other has Giring. If you swap
the calipers, and possibly the hoses, they should interchange. Pads,
of course are related to the caliper Mfgr. So if you have new
calipers, hoses and pads, the whole shebang may swap out.

I hope they catch the SOB, too, but I doubt it; he left finger
"marks" and smudges everywhere, but policeman said there was nothing
good enough for ID.

BTW, anybody know what a good, used 126 trunk lid may cost me - what
should I expect to pay? Preferably black, of course, but I'm
probably not that lucky.

When I lived in Italy, I learned to leave my car unlocked, nothing of value

Sorry to hear about this Wilton, unfortunately I am not able to use the
language on this list to properly describe the lowlifes responsible for
this crime. Bit of a kick in the guts, you spend most of your life
protecting your country and some slack arse druggie does this.
Sometimes I think a get tough approach should be used, none of this good
behaviour bonds, suspended sentence or whatever. Straight to the army
for a 3 year stint. Jail only seems to teach them how to be better
criminals and connect with other lowlifes.
Makes you wonder what they where expecting to find in your cars? Spose
they thought that Merc owners leave a few hundred dollars in the glove
box, just in case. Gold bars in the boot?

probably not enough power to move a panzerwagen. I have been keeping an eye
open for local 190e 2.6 or a manual 2.5 602 would be a nice fit in the new SL

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Save this Antique Mercedes Diesel

2012-03-25 Thread Curt Raymond
I was actually pleased to note the other day that in normal commuting my '78
240D pulled 30.5mpg. The highest I've ever gotten in a 240D was 32mpg which was
in my '83. I think with new tires on the alloy rims from the '84 the '78 will
nudge past that mark at the cost of a bit of power...

Re: [MBZ] More Oil Line Silliness

2012-03-25 Thread Curt Raymond
On the subject of the teflon providing some danger without any advantage I see
your point but the potential for danger here is relatively minor. When I use
teflon tape I don't go all the way to the end of the threaded portion, in the
case of a flare fitting you'd pretty much have to wrap all the way to the end
of the threads and beyond...

Only sloppy enough to inject a gob of teflon into an oil passage and seize
your engine... I suppose.

Teflon doesn't really "protect" threads from seizure like anti-seize does,
so my strong preference is anti-seize. In the case of a flare fitting
teflon provides no benefit for sealing the pipe joint, so why not use what
will let you take it apart later with the least problem.

Your personal choice dictates which method you live with.

Re: [MBZ] Brakes

2012-03-25 Thread Dave in SoCal
A backwards method I have used in the past is to log in to the EPC with the VIN
you want to put parts on and run a 'part' search with the the part number you
have. If applicable, a diagram will pop up, if not, a 'no part found' message
appears.

Did this for some 380SL rotors I had - my memory is faded but I believe the
rears worked on a W123 but the fronts did not. Could be completely wrong,
though — it was a good while back.

IIRC, for the 450SL, the rear pads will work, and probably the hoses. Not
sure about the disks. I don't know, but suspect that the 560SL has new
parts.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Smelling Laundry

2012-03-25 Thread G Mann
Your local $1 store. They will have a product that comes in a spray bottle
and has Orange oil as the main ingredient. It cleans up grease and oil like
nothing else I have ever used and leaves a nice citrus smell.

It also removes blood stains, in case SWMBO really goes off the deep end
over using her washer.. ;)).

Dump in a bunch [it's bio degradable ] and wash away. Might want to run it
a couple of cycles with the Orange cleaner each time.

The Orange cleaner is sold under a bunch of different labels but the main
ingredient in all of them is orange oil, a by product of the orange juice
industry [they have to dispose of the orange peels somehow and found use
for them].

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Smelling Laundry

2012-03-25 Thread Michael Canfield
Just hand wash them in a bucket of hot water with dishsoap and throw them
in your own washer for a final cleaning.

Gotta love it when ya go to the laundromat to get your clothes clean and
the whole place stinks of diesel fuel and the machines are greasy from not
prewashing crap like that.

Everyone says "F it, it is not my machine, I will put all sorts of nasty
shit in it and to hell with the next guy.". Real nice.

Happens all the time around here.
