Re: [MBZ] Does concentrated coolant have a shelf life?
It measures the acidity/alkalinity of solutions. Dip the disposable paper test strip in a solution and then compare it to a color scale. Cheapest is Walmart at about $5.00. (Some Walmart stores don't have them but Walmart mailorder does.) Widely used for numerous applications; many manufacturers make them. As long as the Ph is between 7 and 11, the antifreeze is okay. If you have a regular doctor, his nurse might be willing to test your antifreeze for Ph with a strip that's used for urine. There are special strips for different types of antifreeze which measure additional characteristics but they are more expensive and probably not needed for our purposes. (Available at big truck/big equipment dealers and some at NAPA.) Gerry Gerry wrote: tested the ph with a urine ph test strip (ph was 9 or 10)... Because of the massive disruption the RNC is causing for the city and downtown area, many of us are all too glad to see a hurricane blow in at the same time. Our downtown is literally boarded up, businesses closed, and access pretty well cut off due to the absolutely over the top security. The school district headquarters where I work is going to be shuttered all week next week, even though we are one block outside of the security zone. It's the second week of school, so you can imagine what a huge disruption this is going to be. I would add that we are not being reimbursed for any of the costs we are incurring to relocate hundreds of staff for the week, or the work that has taken place to protect our building from the anarchists whom the government says are going to destroy everything within reach. If you listen to the FBI and Secret Service people, you would think that the place is going to be a smoking crater by the end of the convention. Oy! I can't elaborate on specifics, since I have been involved in some of the planning, suffice to say in my opinion I think the FBI and SS are blowing things out of proportion. The big news right now (also on CNN) is how they have intercepted communications between the anarchists, and they are planning on blowing up bridges to disrupt traffic. This could be done (disrupting traffic) but the bridges are in very visible and controlled areas. I don't see how anyone could get close to them if they wanted to. BTW, I am a network security person. I am not hyper about it by any means. I liken it more to a cat and mouse sort of thing, not a massive show of force approach. But dear I am doing my best, I plead, nah get that look that makes me feel like a metro sexual who does not own tools or a BBQ. Now under extreme pressure and way to early to take my medicine, I pick up the telling bone and let my fingers do the walking. Aztronics sympathise but do not have the right bits but could cobble something together. Hmmnh I think, looking at my fencing wire and duct tape. I know damn well if I want my coffee and other nice things in the morning I am going to have to get this German clothes cleaner going sooner rather than later. Some of the people in the above mentioned forum reckon that http://au.element14.com/ is the go for bits, hey I know how to shop online but how long will this take? Well they have the right erzatsteile and promise lightening quick postage. So I take the plunge and 30 bucks later including shipping (I ordered two relays and they only sell the fuses in 10, so I have spares now) the deed is done. Proudly announce to the missus that parts are on order and everything is under control (this should buy me some time before she gets the poo poos and calls the bloke in the red van (which I believe is a MB http://www.miele.com.au/au/domestic/service/customersupport.htm )). Anyway next morning I log into my element14 (sounds kinda creepy) account to check where my stuff is, get this: Your order has been received. Your order has been assigned an order number and is currently being processed. Your order has been fulfilled. Your order is being processed. Your order has been partially shipped. Your order had been cancelled. Your order is on hold. What the flying truck, order cancelled? order on hold??? But they promised that they have the stuff ready for shipping. Now I have to be very careful and not show any signs of panic, as the lady of the house is keeping a close eye on progress. Should I ring them? Well anyway by the time I start to think about reaching for the blower, a fella arrives on the doorstep, after much announcing by my feral Jack Russels, I manage to squeeze out the door and grab my bag of goodies. Not bad, delivery in less than 24 hours, they must have got training from MB spares. So now I can show the boss the wee little bits that will make the overworked Miele healthy again. Grab the stick with the hot end and set myself up in the warmth of the dining room, to weave my magic. The fuse was easy but the 8 prong relay gave a hell of a fight but lost eventually. Stick the new relay on and rush into the laundry to fit the board, turn on the machine and proudly announce that it's fixed and I am a God that must be worshipped, hang on something is not right, OMFG I soldered the relay on the wrong side of the board, so much for quality control. Quietly sneek back to the soldering iron and pretending this is normal, remove relay, turn board over and with a hiss of hot metal on cold solder show that fn relay who the boss is. Right O now it's God time and you just never know the missus may be very appreciative that she does not have to go back to the hell that is the Laundromat. Turn the knob, push the button, stand back expecting the drum to turn, yeah right you false idol, the rinse light is telling me that I am not a God but a mere mortal who must face trials in order to be granted entry into the kingdom of the one true God. Holding back the tears I pull the board from the machine and drag my sorry behind back to the table, hmmnh fuse is blown again, this can happen if the relay is not replaced but I replaced it. Google should have huge bandwidth in Chicago so GV is probably the best outcome for your internet connection. Your connection must be always on for this to make sense. I assume you already have a router set up. Try it for two weeks, call at all times of day and night, and you'll know if it's tolerable for your purposes; then you can kill the land line. see. Suggestions: - plan to go to Kinko's to fax, unless you are sending a dozen pages a day it's not worth setting up the system around that; - leave one analog phone connected to the world, - set up asterisk if you need voice mail, - use GV to forward calls to your SIP number so you can change providers on a whim. We use some flavor of linux that included a SIP client Ekiga Softphone - has anyone used this? Yes. It is sufficient, but I personally hate soft phones - I don't like sitting in front of the computer while on the phone. Quality should be comparable to a properly-configured gateway. It should be in repos for all major distros. Is anyone familiar with SIP DID? I guess I will have a Seattle phone number that costs $0.009 per minute if setup is via callwithus and ipkall. [MBZ] W.M. Keck Observatory
I mentioned earlier (on the 9th, to be exact) about finding a position in Hawaii. The position I found is a senior electronics engineer with the W. M. Keck Observatory. This position involves preparing equipment for the Observatory's two 10 meter telescopes. The telescopes are on the top of 13,796 foot Mauna Kea on the big island of Hawai'i. The Observatory's headquarters are off the mountain at Kameula, HI. I did some revision of my CV, wrote a cover letter, and applied for the position on 16 August (a week ago). I had not expected to hear anything about the postion, but I received a phone call today from a person in the Observatory's Human Resources Department. We talked for 25 - 30 minutes. He said if they choose to continue considering me, the next step would be either a call from the hiring manager if he needed more technical information or a panel phone call from 3 or so people around a speaker phone over there. This is exactly what happened for each of the four academic telephone interviews I had. So, we shall see how things develop. Please pray about this position with me. [MBZ] 603 intake manifold RR
I'm getting ready to remove the intake manifold on the '87 300D in order to replace all the glow plugs at once, including reaming the prechambers. (I've had three premature GP failures in the past six months or so, and suspect carboned-up prechambers.) Also doing some other stuff that needs fixing and will be easy to get to while the manifold and crossover pipe are off, like a new valve cover gasket. I'll be changing the oil at the same time, but should I also plan to drain the coolant? Also, what's the torque spec on the manifold bolts? Should I put anything on the gasket or just put it on dry? Thanks for any tips or hints. Re: [MBZ] 603 intake manifold RR
If I remember correctly, the gasket has sealant on it. This can be a bit fiddly, remember how the injection line clamps go on and don't drop any of the nuts. The hex head screws can be a pain in the backside to reach. Torque is 20 ft/lbs or so, they are the equivalent of 1/4 20 screws. No coolant exposed, no need to drain. Do the usual on the valve cover gasket -- totally clean cover, bang it on the head until you get a solid thwack to seat the seal, don't overtighten. Re: [MBZ] 603 intake manifold RR
I bought a snap-on 6 mm ball head hex (allen) socket, 3/8 drive and 6 long for the intake manifold bolts. It makes life MUCH easier. If they have an 8 one, that would be good too. Start a couple of bolts (upper) through the manifold, then pull the manifold away from the head and drop the gasket in. it has hooks to catch on the bolts as you slide it in. Gasket has rubber sealant on it. It is truly a one use gasket. You should get a gasket for the crossover pipe also; especially if you don't want oil leaking there. Be careful navigating Saddle road. Last time I was there the rental car add-on insurance did not cover any incident occurring on that road. It's the only way to get to the observatory short of a helicopter ride. It will snow near the peak and most people there have long forgotten how to drive in the stuff. You will even get black ice accumulating from the fog. Dive shops, boat charters and many others will give you 25-50% off the advertised tourist rate if you can convince them you are a resident. Re: [MBZ] 603 intake manifold RR
I used Hylomar and reused the crossover pipe and manifold gaskets. Works fine. Check the green O-rings. If they are hard, replace. Mine was loaded up with an insane amount of oil residue from the EGR on the S350. I scraped out what I could get to then used the welding gloves to hold it while I pointed a propane torch into it to heat up the rest until it oozed out. Got several cups worth of crud. Hylomar now comes in a blue blister pack from Permatex. Easy to miss it. -Dave Walton On Aug 23, 2012, at 11:00 PM, Alex Chamberlain apchamberl...@gmail.com wrote: I'm getting ready to remove the intake manifold on the '87 300D in order to replace all the glow plugs at once, including reaming the prechambers. Re: [MBZ] Clinical depression. was: occupying the deadly 3rd row.
I object to the sudden logic that recognizing and accepting that no one leaves this world alive somehow makes you depressed. Further, I object to the idea that just because we live in a financial depression with near total lack of good leadership that we are personally depressed. Re: [MBZ] List working today? With a happy ending

The washing machine made a God awful noise and stopped working and it's your fault. (well she didn't say it was my fault but that tone in the voice...) Hmmnh, grab a beer and have a gander, push buttons and such, water goes in, water goes out but no turny of the round thingy in the middle of the machine. What the., this is a Miele, it is not supposed to break down. Far out, OK the rinse light is flashing, that's not supposed to happen. Googly woggly says that the flashy light means the motor is having a moment, Ok maybe the brushes are not brushing. Motor out and into my leaky workshop, many extensive and complicated tests later the brushes, although worn a bit are serviceable. Sure enough fuse is kaputt. No worries Jaycar have a pile of stuff. Sales fella has a meltdown when shown the bits that are not biting. Humnh back home with tail between legs to find a winging missus bitching about the state of the local Laundromat. Proudly announce to the missus that parts are on order and everything is under control (this should buy me some time before she gets the poo poos and calls the bloke in the red van (which I believe is a MB http://www.miele.com.au/au/**domestic/service/** customersupport.htmhttp://www.miele.com.au/au/domestic/service/customersupport.htm)). Right O now it's God time and
