taiwan stuff is ok. the bicycles are actually really superb and have been
good for 20 years. back in the day, i had this GF and she wanted to ride
with me. i rode a bridgestone and really loved it. so i told her to get a
bridgestone. she naturally just went to the corner bike shop and bought
what they sold. it was a giant. i'd never heard of giant and was pretty
positive she was hosed, so i decided to show her in great detail why her
bike sucked and she should have gotten a bridgestone like i said. only the
giant was super nice. it rode super nice. i was shocked to see it was
from taiwan

taiwan mercedes parts are ok too. i sell a lot of karlyn control arms to
people who dont' want to pony up for the real deal and they work out
nicely, unlike the URO chinese garbage that is just worthless.

i might buy a little scooter someday. are there weight limits on them?
i'd get a 49cc so i don't have to mess with licensing or insurance and i'm
not planning on going very far or very fast.

I've had a bunch of coffee houses and the most interesting time was when
we were in a 1920's gas station and had a coffee counter with espresso
machine and did printing in the garage bay with several presses, plate
burner, light tables and laser printer and process camera and did color
film processing AND sold new and used bikes and did a lot or bike repairs.

That was from about 1985 to 1990. About 1990, the printing business was
starting to shrink, so i moved into a couple of revivals of film movie
 cameras etc., etc.

The bikes sort of morphed into motor scooters when i started selling Bajaj
 scooters.

As for the chinese bikes, they really sucked 10 or 11 years ago when i
started selling Geely. Then we sold lots of Vento 150 cc bikes which were
really good, now i sell Peace brand scooters. All of those are chinese
except for the bajaj which was a vespa company, originally (in india). This
is the real name of Peace ... Chongqing Astronautic Bashan Motorcycle
 Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

We mostly sell 50cc Peace scooters for about $950 with inexpensive helmet
for your inexpensive head. I rode a new 50cc home for a college student who
wasn't yet comfortable with it, on friday, about 5 miles over to the
college on Friday it ran really nicely.

The chinese bikes HAVE to be setup and adjusted to run right, but if you
do that they are pretty good.

Hondas and yamahas and vespas and taiwan (TGB, Kymco, etc) are better BUT
they cost 3X the price and my customers are NOT shopping for $2500 to $3000
50 cc bikes. Most Vespa dealers are not doing all that well.

Parts? everything is on ebay and it's cheap. My importer/supplier in
Atlanta which is, i think, owned by peace, is LOADED with parts. They
 usually have everything.

Better - or more accurate - than measuring continuity is to measure
voltage drop. After starting the engine (so the battery needs a
bit of charging) measure the voltage with one lead on the battery
+ terminal and the other on the big wire at the alternator. If
there is more than 0.25 V drop, it's worth a closer look.

[MBZ] . Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-04 Thread Gerry Archer

- Original Message -
From: Richard Hattaway rhatta...@rocketmail.com

Yep, slipsies might introduce more questions than answers. Just make the
240D bare posts, and set up the jumpers. If you get 13.7 when the 300 D is
running, then look at the battery in the 300D closer.
You really don't have to disconnect the 300D battery to make the test.
I think you are going to see 12.7 with both batteries. But then you've
scratched off one of the tests you wanted to run pretty early in the game.
Did the new connector help any?? I've never changed one. I was thinking it
was a molded plug on the end of some wires, but it's been 8 years since I've
looked at one.

No, but I needed an unbroken connector anyway in order to push/pull the
connector off the alternator. It's not molded around the connectors. The
standard 3/8 female connectors in it are snapped in.

[MBZ] .. Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-04 Thread Gerry Archer

That's what I plan to do; just didn't explain it very well.
Gerry

From: Richard Hattaway rhatta...@rocketmail.com

OK, it's not a good idea to remove a battery from a turning alternator. So
this is not a good plan.

I was thinking more along the idea of disconnecting the 240 battery from
it's car ( pull the cables off ) then jumping the 240 battery over to the
300. The 240 battery is still in the car but not connected to the car.

If you have no issue starting the 300, it starts easlily with the
questionable battery, then I'm thinking it's not the battery that's at the
root of your charging issue.

If you are saying you are going to use your jumper cables in between the
240 battery and the 300 cables and starter yhen you better have a big set
of cables. Like welding cable. Otherwise you will burn them up and not
answer your question. Better to just swap out the batteries and see if
the
issue follows the battery from the 300.

Like everybody else has said, please change the battery before you go to

than messing with regulators and drill presses (c:

Thanks to Rick, Richard, and Loren for your advice; and to Fred for the
connector which arrived in good order. Going to wire it up and try it
again. If the connector wasn't the problem, will put a good regulator in

the
drill press one at a time and try the half dozen regulators (hooked to
the
12 volt shop battery) until I find a good combination. If that doesn't
work, I'll assume that the battery, (which had boiled out most of its

they

[MBZ] ... Alternator question '83 300D

Does the voltage that excites the field via the smaller (green?) wire always
show 12v or whatever the charging voltage is, or does it vary? I saw full
12v when the key was on and the engine not running but wondered if the green
wire voltage regulated the alternator output in some way by varying the
voltage.

If an alternator acted as a simple supply of E in said equation, then yes,
this is true. One could also insert an R with a value of 0 and have the
alternator provide infinite charge.

However, an alternator actually depends on the battery for excitation of its
field windings, and a battery with a high resistance cell will normally
cause the alternator to not charge.

If the battery has high resistance, then it will be even easier for
the alternator to achieve 13.6 V. If the resistance is _low_, then
it could have trouble supplying the necessary current. Ohms law
and all that. *smiles*

[MBZ] Alternator/battery problem

2013-09-04 Thread Gerry Archer

Was just thinking that since this may turn out to be a lot of testing with a
good battery, I'll go down and buy a new shop battery as a replacement for
the 9 year old shop battery that runs the burglar alarm, fire alarm, and
lights when the power is off. The present shop battery is using more water
in one cell and the trickle charger seems to be running hotter too, so the
old battery may be dying anyway. That way I can jumper to the 300D in the

No, the voltage on the green wire will follow what the battery and the
alternator are doing. If the alternator is properly charging the battery,
it can go up to 14.4 volts. If the alternator is not charging the battery
and the battery gets discharged, it can go below 10 volts.

Mr. Hattaway, maybe you should not assume folks are stupid.  Been a
mechanic over 25 years.  You try starting even a good starting Diesel with
the average set of cables people use these days and a bad battery and you
are going to burn up the cables.  They are meant to charge first, then
start.  Heavy cables are not cheap and most people do not own a $100 set of
jumper cables capable of starting a Diesel.  Yes, charging only isn't a big
deal and completely safe as long as he is careful.  Not even really likely
to damage the diodes swapping terminals as long as nothing is crossed.

This is nothing more than jump starting the car as far as the cables are
concerned.  Nothing is going to burn up here.

In fact, what will probably happen is the alternator will begin charging
the newly introduced battery since the questionable one was run dry, thus
has a high resistance cell eliminating the ability for the battery to be
charged by the alternator.  He's looking for 13.7 out of the alternator
which is correct, and should be achieved if A) the alternator is capable of
charging, and B) the battery is able to be charged.

It's a simple test, takes seconds, and is accurate.  It can be done in
business clothes.  It eliminates or proves half of the A) and B) above.
There is no chance of meltdown or fire any more than there is during any
 jump start situation.

Please be accurate and thoughtful with your posts before making some wild
comment about burning up cables, etc.  Someone here might think you know
 what you're talking about.

Re: [MBZ] OT Rattlesnakes

2013-09-04 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Many years ago I spent a couple of months in Cameron County, TX (the world's
rattlesnake capitol) where I was lucky enough to skin a decent sized
rattler. I salted and rolled the skin thinking to make a nice belt from it.
Unfortunately my BIL's dog enjoyed it before I had the chance.

I have a coupla copperhead skins that are really beautiful. Not sure what
to do with them, but I tanned them so they are useful for maybe a hatband or
a belt. You could do the same with the rattlers, and I hear they are some
tasty eatin on the barbee.

Contrary to what you might think.. cutting the head off a rattlesnake
does not render it safe.. I've had severed heads still strike after
 as long as
45 minutes... with the capacity to deliver a lethal dose of venom... so..
should you encounter one... kill it and leave it.. resist the impulse
to pick it up cause it's dead... They are also very territorial. If
you find one near your residence and have it removed.. it will find
it's way back within the next month.. When I first took the Ranch, I
would capture and remove any rattlesnake that came around the ranch
house.. soon I noticed what looked like the same snake [yes.. they all
look alike, scary] so I spray painted the ones captured.. sure
enough.. they came back.. Since then... I hang them on the fence and
and bury the head, the coyotes or vultures eat... nothing goes to waste.

The credit card companies have departments full of people to chase down fraud,

If they weren't aggressive about prosecution credit cards would not be

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-04 Thread Richard Hattaway
Has anyone ever seen a fire from jumper cables in anything other than a dream?

Sure, we've all gotten them warm enough to make the insulation tacky, but I am
under the assumption that if someone is capable of making an alternator test
station from a drill press he is also capable of looking after his well-being
when he's using jumper cables.

Lets give Gerry a bit of credit here.  I bet he can spot hot jumper cables.
All I wanted to do was make a suggestion that he could save the ass busting
clothes staining work of moving a big ole diesel battery from one car to
another by using jumper cables in a charging test.  He apparently had no
problem starting the car.

First thing I know, someone comes screaming into the room that there's gonna be
a fire.  Now *really*??  If the long term mechanics on the list have actually
caught jumper cables on fire then they really ought to consider a new line of
work.  Thus my comment.

If I hurt someone's feelings, I apologize.  That is not my intention.  I will
respond to an exaggerated response.  The claim of a fire is an exaggerated
response.

My time on this thread is done.  Hope Gerry gets his alternator issue solved.

The (bad?) battery still starts the car, so I'll use it for starting.  The

Re: [MBZ] OT Rattlesnakes

2013-09-04 Thread G Mann
I was indeed born poor. I did walk to school uphill. Although I wore shoes
in the winter. I won a card game at age 10.. which gave me ownership in a
hay truck.. which, through sweat and hard work, hired helpers and ran a hay
operation that paid for flight school and college. That card game
investment, developed into other business ventures.. some aviation related,
that generated both large investments and large income supplying parts for
airliners and business jets repaired by overhaul shops I had a stake in.
Other business opportunities were taken, along with attendant risks.. so in
effect it was still a poker game... all in, win or lose.
Land, Lumber, Livestocks, Materials Equipment, Worldwide. Keep track of
that for a while and you wake up tired most days. Success is 90%
perspiration, 10% inspiration... 20 hr days and 7 day weeks. No vacations,
ever.

I bitch about the Sister of Satan ex.. but truth is.. I was never home.. my
mistress was business and profit. Women have a short storage shelf life.

Being surrounded by acreage may seem exotic... but the attraction to me is
it's quiet.. there is no phone to ring 24/7, and I don't have to deal with
people. There is no grass to mow, no HOA to fight. Just over friendly
rattlesnakes and desert. and taxes.. can't forget those..

Hendrik is writing the screen play.. Gary will play the naked fat biker
part, I believe.. Don't have a clue how he will handle the mutant snake
thing.. Looks like I'll have the recluse eccentric part pretty well sewed
up..

With your kind permission.. this is the part where I kiss my horse and ride
into the sunset..

A 9mm shotgun uses a 9mm case with a cup full of very small (number 10)

 the early 1900s.

Anyway one night we get this porcupine eating on the garage so we take the

his .380 pistol. That seems to finish things for the night.
In the morning I get up and the dang thing is still alive although it
can't move. Horrifying. I finally finished it with a couple (yes more than
 one) .22s between the eyes.

The 9mm was clearly not enough for the job, the .380 didn't work out
because its hard to shoot a pistol in the dark and body shots don't do the
job. Porcupines have thick skulls so even the .22 had a hard time.

Now we always are sure to have a big enough gun for the job. Worst would

Re: [MBZ] buymbparts is dead drunk at walmart

2013-09-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Tough work in the dark though. Generally it goes like this, you wake up in the
night for a call of nature. Since its a camp and there is no indoor plumbing
men get to go outside, women have a bucket inside. So you're all snuggled up in
your fart sack considering if you should brave the cold or can you hold it
until morning and then you hear it. I can't think of any way to explain what a
porcupine chewing on the garage wall sounds like. Imagine somebody trying to
chisel through a garage wall and you're probably close.

Anyway as a courtesy you wake up the other sleepers, grab some shoes, maybe
pants if you want to be fancy though I usually do put on a shirt. Grab yer gun
and the big mag-light, go out and find said chewer. Usually when you shine the
light on him he'll pause but he won't run, so you chuck a rock so he'll get
away from the garage. You give him lead poisoning, answer the call of nature
and go back to bed.

Sometimes the little b@$t@rd will be up under the camp. I usually whack the
side of the camp to get him to come out, dad just shoots underneath... One time
dad did the shooting without waking the other campers, thats something exciting
to wake up to.

The strangest part of the whole thing is that you shoot a porcupine, and then a
rabbit or two shows up for the funeral. I mean like right then. You shoot,
eject the shell, look again and theres a rabbit reading last rites...

I can lift a group 49 battery with no problem, but then I pay with a couple

osteoporosis, and having 2 bad intervertebral discs.
However, since this strange problem is probably going to require a number of
trials, instead of jumpering the good battery in the other car, I'll use a
new battery that I just bought. It's light enough that lifting it around
won't cause back problems.
The battery shows a full charge, so I'll start the car using the (bad?)
battery, switch to the new, small battery, turn on the lights and A/C, and
see what kind of voltage is on the battery. 13.7v and we'll know the big
battery is the problem.
If not, I'll put a regulator I know is good in the alternator and try it.
If still no good, I'll replace alternators (I have three spares) and test
with the good regulator.
Not simple, but it should lead to a solution of the problem.

No, I'm not going to use the new, light battery in the MB diesels. It

Yes, that would make one quite worked up about one's dog.

I saw an eastern king snake in the driveway a week or two ago when I
was going to get the paper, it was coiled up and was Not Happy to see

Actually, eastern king snakes appear to be one of the good guys.
http://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/lamget.htm says,

Habits: In our region kingsnakes are active almost exclusively by
day but are most active in the morning during the summer. They are
strong constrictors and consume a variety of prey including snakes,
lizards, rodents, birds, and especially turtle eggs. Kingsnakes
are resistant to the venom of pit-vipers and they readily eat
copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes. Although they
frequently rattle their tail, release musk, and bite upon capture,
they generally tame quickly and are often kept as pets. This species
mates in the spring and males bite the neck of females while mating.
Females lay 3-24 eggs under debris or in rotting logs in early
summer and eggs hatch in August-September.

From the pictures on the page, they are quite pretty.

Re: [MBZ] OT Rattlesnakes

2013-09-04 Thread Rich Thomas
I think there might be plenty in the immediate area. You are welcome to
come inspect.

A guy I know on Wadmalaw had his dog bit a few weeks back and had to fly
it to Raleigh or Chapel Hill to get antivenom (or venin, I can never
remember that word). He flew the dog up there in his jet at his wife's
insistence. His wife got bit by one last year stepping over a log (a
big NONO), she heard it, stopped, and was like OHSH*T and decided she
could move faster than a coiled rattler. FAIL. Took her quite some
time to recover but she did, I guess that is why she was so worked up
about the dog.

I have curtailed my woodland rambles this summer because of all the rain
has apparently got the snakes energized. I saw an eastern king snake in
the driveway a week or two ago when I was going to get the paper, it was
coiled up and was Not Happy to see me. I poked at it with a stick and
it decided retreat was the best option, but it was shaking its tail.

Just to give you an idea of what you ask for Kaleb. To be in the
middle with 14 miles on every side that would be only 784 sq
MILES or 501,760 acres.

BTW Long Island has about 1,723 sq miles. That's 1,102,720 acres.
The King ranch in Texas is supposed to be the largest ranch in
the US at around 825,000 acres with a few more in south Florida.

I think it will be a bit of a stretch to find a ranch the right
size for sale in most any state.

A 9mm shotgun uses a 9mm case with a cup full of very small (number 10)

Anyway one night we get this porcupine eating on the garage so we take the

blast. He slows down but doesn't stop so I give him another, and another

his .380 pistol.

Worst would
be if the thing climbed up into a tree to die, it'd have smelled forever...

Survey points run from mountain top to mountain top and along stream

Some of the border is defined by Bureau of Land Management. so who

with mountains, I can see how doing things differently would be better.

It seems like a lot, but actually as ranches go in this area, it's a

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-04 Thread Michael Canfield
Not even really likely
to damage the diodes swapping terminals as long as nothing is crossed.

in so many words.
On Sep 3, 2013 5:04 PM, Richard Hattaway rhatta...@rocketmail.com wrote:

What kind of claim is this???

Jumper cables are like welding cable. At least good ones are. The two
batteries are running 12 volts float. There is little likelihood of
anything other than minor charging going on between the two batteries,

If you are saying you are going to use your jumper cables in between the
240 battery and the 300 cables and starter yhen you better have a big set
of cables. Like welding cable. Otherwise you will burn them up and not
answer your question. Better to just swap out the batteries and see if the

Thanks to Rick, Richard, and Loren for your advice; and to Fred for the

 the
drill press one at a time and try the half dozen regulators (hooked to
 the

They need disposing of since they will burrow next to fence corner posts
and will ruin two fence lines.

One day, when we were driving on the lane on the south side of our 80
acres, I noticed an animal ahead. I thought it was our cat. Shirley said
it was not. When we got closer, I saw it was a badger. The lane was
fenced on the south side, but not on the north side. When we got close,
the badger headed north onto our property. I followed it in our 4000#
1962 Willys Utility Wagon. I caught up with it well away from the fence
and rolled over it with both wheels on one side. I looped around and saw
that it was still moving, so I ran over it again with both wheels on one
side. I ended up doing figure-8s in the field and had to run it over
seven times before it stopped moving.

Those things are tough! And they have a full mouth of very nasty looking

Re: [MBZ] buymbparts is dead drunk at walmart

2013-09-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Its on, when I go to camp next month I'll try to get a porcupine pic.

I'm still game to try snake, can't be any worse than red squirrel.

Another story:
When I got a permit to hunt moose in '99 I managed to bag the moose the very
first hour of the very first day. This left us lots of time. I had my Dad's
friend's kid Michael with me. He was about 14 (and threw up when I gutted the
moose, hilarious) and eager to be in the woods. We were officially hunting
birds which means partridge but after not seeing any because the leaves were
still on we switched to squirrels. I gave him my Savage .22/20ga, an over and
under gun with .22 on top and 20ga under, its short and quite handy. The .22
barrel on that gun is fairly inaccurate so I figured we'd have an exciting day
not hitting anything. That sonofa gun hit ever dang squirrel I'd point him at.
So we get five or six of the tree rats down and he looks at me and says Are we
going to have to eat them?

I'd never thought about it but of course he's been taught that you always eat
what you kill, so sure, we're going to eat them. We go out to my camp back
before it was my camp and build a little fire and I show him how to skin one
out and toast it on a stick. Then he takes a bite, chews for a second and says
it tastes kind of like hot dog but way chewier. We had a good laugh, tossed
the rest in the bushes and went to McDonalds...

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-04 Thread Curt Raymond
There you go again, you passive aggressive or what?

Do you not recognize that your very first line is looking for a fight? If you
talked to me like that in person I'd walk away. When I was younger I'd have hit
you but I'm a bigger person than that now.

Yes I've seen cables melt. My great uncle Reg (who had plenty of money) grew up
during the depression and was a great one for buying the cheapest anything that
would do the job. He carried the absolute worst jumper cables I've ever seen
and patched them together with as little tape as he could get away with.
Finally went to jump a car for a lady in a parking lot, I made the connections
(of course he made me do it) and when she hit the key both wires at the truck
end burnt right off. He was very upset when I wouldn't try to fix the cables.

Lets give Gerry a bit of credit here.? I bet he can spot hot jumper cables.?
All I wanted to do was make a suggestion that he could save the ass busting
clothes staining work of moving a big ole diesel battery from one car to
another by using jumper cables in a charging test.? He apparently had no
problem starting the car.

First thing I know, someone comes screaming into the room that there's gonna be
a fire.? Now *really*??? If the long term mechanics on the list have actually
caught jumper cables on fire then they really ought to consider a new line of
work.? Thus my comment.?

If I hurt someone's feelings, I apologize.? That is not my intention.? I will
respond to an exaggerated response.? The claim of a fire is an exaggerated
response.

My time on this thread is done.? Hope Gerry gets his alternator issue solved.

Well said Gary. I remember some of the stuff you said some years ago on this

This time around you have been nothing but civil. In my opinion you have the

[MBZ] My Next Mercedes Diesel

2013-09-04 Thread Kevin Kraly
Just thought I would try to add some Mercedes content to the list. In a
couple weeks, I'm going to start looking in earnest for my next rattly
Mercedes. Will it be a W115 220D, 240D or 300D, W116 300SD, W123 240D or
300D sedan, coupe or wagon, turbo or NA, W124 1987 300D or a 1990-93 300D
2.5T, W126 SD or SDL? I've even seen a couple W201's out there. I like the
300tD's, but they either seem to be priced way too high even with issues, or
the rear SLS is shot or removed completely. I wouldn't mind a 300CD NA or
the extra power of a Turbbo Diesel since I liked the two NA models I owned.
I'm looking for one that's enjoyable, not to expensive, one without too
much neglect, something to be the fun car. Do you think I have the
sickness? Seriously, any suggestions on what years/models that aren't too
pricy, lots of bang for the buck?
