A rootkit virus on the non-boot drive should not affect a Knoppix CD/DVD anyway as it cannot install. G: The USB ports did work with Knoppix; driving the standard mouse and the keyboard. As soon as I load Knoppix on a thumb drive I may know if the CD-R will write to a disc. Hopefully, all the trouble is in the OS. All hard drives have the same connector, either standard parallel ATA or serial ATA, they are usually attached to a custom sled of some sort, but they are ALL the same. The only thing specific to a particular laptop is the cable that the drive plugs into and perhaps the cradle is it screwed to, but those interchange. Peter G: I took all three HDs out of their carriers. The Lenovo is serial ATA (SATA?), and the others are Ultra ATA and (ATA?); both of which have a pin arrangement with jumpers typical of desktop HDs with one having a push-on adapter. The serial ATA Lenovo had no jumpers. It looks like I can switch the adapter on the ATAs, change the jumpers if necessary, and use the spare ATA (from a laptop with a bad MB) in the Compaq (HP) if the data on the Compaq HP is not retrievable. The corrupted HD can be stored and it's data accessed visually if necessary while the spare HD, now in the Compaq, can be wiped and a clean version of another OS loaded; thereby putting the Compaq back in operation. [MBZ] How to Download WinXP to a DVD
Can someone tell me how to download WinXP to a DVD? Went through a pile of discs and found one that upgraded a WinXP Service Pack 2 on a computer to WinXP Service Pack 3. Might be able to use a disk copy of that to correct the problems on another laptop with corrupted WinXP SP3. Tried pasting C: on to the CD-R drive but that didn't work. On the 123 and 126 and I think the 107 the kickdown switch is a thing about 3/4 inch diameter, under the go-pedal, it fits into a hole in the floor and has 2 or 3 tabs that hold it in. I'm not buying that because Nissan and Ford tried that on engines years ago, and it pretty much was a failure. And -that- is conclusive, after all, since 1980s Nissan and 1990s Ford had such a reputation for engineering. It's found a whole bunch of faults with this car. ... Do you really want a car that tells you that there's a problem with the wiring to the light inside the trunk? Spoken by a guy who gets paid $160/hr to find electrical gremlins. I was thinking, I wonder if I can retrofit one of those into Wilt's SDL? The computers knows that sometimes it's giving out squirrely advice. I appreciate the honesty. Of whoever programmed the code reader, anyway. Buttons all over the place, look at them all. My '11 Ford E350 has more buttons than that, the '05 Ford Escape was even worse when you count the onscreen menus. When did this guy buy his last car, anyway? Does he usually work on '70s hot rods? [From the end, it appears the answer is perhaps yes.] You -think- you got a good deal on a used Mercedes. Well, he's got that part right, anyway. No such thing as a cheap one. :) Best, Tim On Wed, Dec 11, 2013 at 10:26 AM, M. Re: [MBZ] Subject: Re: National Storage Agency
From Wikipedia: SSNs used in advertising have rendered those numbers invalid. One famous instance of this occurred in 1938 when the E. H. Ferree Companyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=E._H._Ferree_Companyaction=editredlink=1 in Lockport, New Yorkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockport_(city),_New_York, decided to promote its product by showing how a Social Security card would fit into its wallets http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallet. A sample card, used for display purposes, was placed in each wallet, which was sold by Woolworth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F.W._Woolworth_Company and other department stores across the country. The wallet manufacturer's vice president and treasurer Douglas Patterson thought it would be clever to use the actual SSN of his secretary, Hilda Schrader Whitcher. Even though the card was printed in red (the real card is printed in blue) and had Specimen printed across the front, many people used the SSN. The Social Security Administration's account of the incident also claims that the fake card was half the size of a real card, despite a miniature card's being useless for its purpose and despite Whitcher's holding two cards of apparently identical size in the accompanying photograph. Over time, the number that appeared (078-05-1120) has been claimed by a total of over 40,000 people as their own.[37]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Security_number#cite_note-Misused-37 The SSA initiated an advertising campaign stating that it was incorrect to use the number. (Hilda Whitcher was issued a new SSN.) However, the number was found to be in use by 12 individuals as late as 1977.[37]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Security_number#cite_note-Misused-37 More recently, Todd Davis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Davis distributed his SSN in advertisements for his company's LifeLock identity theft protection service. -- I have read to give out the 078 number if you want to be non-obviously rebellious, since a legitimate investigation will show it as obviously false but a scammer won't know. From: Kevin Allen Kraly kevinpadd...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] bought the 1987 190D 2.5, a few issues Message-ID: 164ae520-ce7a-43cc-b5fa-517ebcc7e...@gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Well, I ended up buying this 190D 2.5. I didn't think it was worth $1000 since it has nearly 300Kmi on it plus the normal old Diesel quirks. I was going to pass on it, but the guy didn't want to drive it back home to sit in the already full driveway since he didn't know much about it or how to fix its issues. I ended up getting it for $500 as he kept lowering his price until I was ready to bite. As no surprise, it has a few quirks. It needs some vacuum troubleshooting since it shuts off slow and, of course, the shifting situation or lack thereof. The ACC system is only working on defrost, and only the driver's rear window and sunroof work. When I depress the passenger's front window switch, I can hear the engine drag and causing the alt to work harder (possibly a bad motor/stuck regulator. I tried to unplug/remove the kick down switch, but I can't figure out how to do either. I guess we'll soon find out who got the better deal. Actually, $500 is good since it has plenty of issues, and I should be able to get my money back out of it or even make a few bucks if I can tackle the kick down switch and possible linkage adjustment and fine tuning to get it going through all of the gears. Thanks Kevin, You saved me from going to Portland and looking at it this weekend :-). I don't have the parking at home right now anyway. [MBZ] OT computer question
As I said in my earlier post, I know little about computers and it appears some of you do, so I am going to ask for some advice here. About 3 weeks or more ago my computer screen informed me that my hard drive was failing. I called my computer fellow and he advised it was not likely a scam and came by and got my computer. Within about 3 hours it was back with a new hard drive and the thing cloned so I should not notice any difference. Seemed to be ok, but now I am getting some issues. Microsoft had decided that my software is not genuine and I get multiple messages daily advising me that I need to fix it. It won't update either and I don't think that Windows Security Essentials is working. I have tried to follow its directions on how to fix the problem but it will not do it. Initially I was directed to download a file and then it was supposed to download some larger file but it kept stalling out. My computer fellow came by and had a quick look but said it was beyond him and he would send one of his tech guys over. They have not shown up yet. I have tried a number of different times to look online for solutions but so far to no avail. Anyone know how tI can make Microsoft satisfied that the software is genuine? I know all that I said above is pretty vague. I also know I have the name of the file that Microsoft wanted met to downloand written down but I cannot lay my hands on it. The other issue is relatively minor. I use a title insurance company that lets me fill in the forms and print the policy online. I cannot get it to print. It is something in this computer's settings as I can log in at home and print policies there with no problem. You can also just call. Since it is an activation problem it should have the number in the popup, and I believe activation support is free. Re: [MBZ] OT need a laptop
The one that is now dying is an Acer. It is kinda cheaply made, which go figure, but my son carried it around and beat on it for some time in college before handing it down. It is probably 8 years old or so. Back when, I was sitting at some thing in Boston, like an Asian-American business conference or something, next to this guy who was Chinese. I talked with him a bit, he was starting a computer company and was there to pitch it, get some investors and partners and such. Nice guy, very quiet and humble, seemed smart, very good English I think he might have gone to school in the US. So he gets up and gives his pitch about this new company called Acer and how they were going to do whatever. Seemed like a fairly crowded market to be entering at the time, but I figured he had some angle (that was not particularly apparent). He came back and sat down, we chatted a bit more. I kinda wish I had some money to throw at him back then... --R On 12/10/13 3:08 PM, Larry T wrote: I highly recommend Acer Laptops - they are sturdy and stand up to extended use. I had that with a 1986 Taurus. It would periodically make a growl but I could not pinpoint what it was. It finally told me what it was when I was a couple of hundred miles from home. - Water pump got bad enough that I was leaving a cloud behind me. I had no tools with me but went and bought some and changed it in the motel parking lot. Good thing the motel was next door to a Target as I kept sending my good wife over for more bits and pieces, like a screwdriver, paper towel, hand cleaner etc. Randy ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] It Fell off!
Education isn't cheap. In 1979, I bought #3 stepdaughter a used Celica when she moved to a nearby town. Several months later I asked if she was changing the oil on schedule. She said she didn't need to change the oil, she just added when it got low!! You can imagine my reply but you can't push on a rope. Shortly thereafter I got a call that the car was making funny noises and there was oil everywhere under the hood. When I tore down the engine, it #2 and #3 cylinders looked like they were run with sand (lots of sand) in them. Having no money at the time (I was in the USAF then) I rebuilt the motor at home except for the machine-shop work. One good thing about California building practices back then was there was always a big beam in the middle of the garage: great for pulling engines. In 2010, #1 grandson informed his mom that his oil light was on, and then he promptly did nothing about it. After the engine locked up his parents ended up selling the car, not running. Doubt they got much for it. I'm beginning to think that side of the family is a little brain dead when it comes to things mechanical.
