Georgia is now in Osnabruck with her Grandmother visiting family
friends. On 10/01 (flying solo) she is heading to Prague/ Salzburg
then to Berlin for her Uncle's 40th. As of the 4/02 she will be based in
London as we have organised a working program for her; then in June she
is off on a sailing boat from Dubrovnik along the Dalmation Coast
Dubrovnik along the Dalmation Coast. Her plan is to spend Halloween in
Barcelona - apparently the street parties are awesome - then back to Oz
for uni in 2015.

She is doing a facebook diary so have a look on my wall, if you can't
find any let me know I will share them. Georgia got a university
entrance score of 90% out of 100% so this is a very well deserved gap
year she is having.

I actually thought of doing it to a 4matic, maybe my 250k wagon if I buy a nicer
one to replace it. I'd put 3 point pins on the front and use a 15 high tractor
blade with skids on the blade and a telescoping top link. I'd have to leave it
in the driveway or take the blade off to go anywhere, but the cost would be next
to nothing.

I don't recall what my 1976 Subaru 4x4 wagon weighed, but it wasn't much, and
the 1600cc flat four only made about 50hp. With four snow tires, it was fun to
play with in the snow. Never got it stuck, but never tried to drive it in a foot
and a half of heavy packed stuff either.

Sounds like tight valves It is not hard. It takes a feel that is
learned. Alot a half day or even a full day for the first time. THe
book sez to turn the engine over with a wrench on the crankshaft. (1
1/16 socket). I often can turn the engine with the fan (if no fan
clutch) by turning the fan with one hand and pulling the alt belt
tight with the other. THe book sez turning the engine over with the
camshaft bolt is a no-no. I have never used special wrenches, but I
did have an antique S wrench in 1/2 x 9/16 that worked well for
holding the lower nut.

After I think I have the valves set, I always turn the engine over
and check the snugness of each valve with the feeler gauge at least
one more time. Twice if I am rusty.

I generally set them for winter and run it all year round that way.
You may lose a little performance, but there is not much to start
with, other than torque.

Thanks for your input.

Won't happen before April so I have time to think about it - and to look
for the wrenches.

How can you say there is not much performance

My very first car was a 1964 Anglia with a 1200 cc motor.
Don't recall the HP ratings but it would do close to 50 mpg (Imperial).
Good thing I never got in any accidents with it or I might not be here.

I have also had a few inline 6, American cars and trucks over the years.
I have rarely had anything that would be considered a hotrod. The
closest, apart from my new truck might have been my 68 Cougar with the 289.

I also had a 1974 Vega.

[MBZ] Fwd: SD not wanting to run in DC area

Daughter drove the SD to DC the other day, ready to go back to NC today,
car starts but won't run but less than a minute, dies. I figure fuel
filters, she checks both the in-line and the can, both look fairly OK.
She filled up in Greensboro before heading to DC before it got cold, had
a 1/4 tank left. I am thinking there might have been condensation in
the tank, or water in the fuel, that has frozen in the tank filter or
lines somewhere. Told her to put in some dri-gas (alcohol stuff) and
some new diesel, she went to auto parts store and got some dri-gas and a
can for diesel, put that stuff in the tank, still no go. She says it is
-4.5C by the temp on the dash, so that is still cold enough to keep
things frozen.

I think probably the only thing is to get it in someplace warm and see
if it thaws out enough to drive. Don't think she has a hair dryer and
cord long enough at her friend's place. I found a coupla garages in
Vienna nearby to Fairfax, she might need to get a tow there. Told her
to call them and see what they think.

Any other ideas?

I looked at filters a coupla weeks back, were clean, and I think I
changed them not that long ago. But that was my first thought hence
having her check them. She had another can filter, but for some reason
she could not get it to screw on the housing, she said it was not dark
or nasty looking in there (which is what I have seen when they are nasty
and dark). The in-line was not nasty or dark, so that seemed to be OK.

She is getting it towed to a shop, I told her to see if they could park
it inside for awhile to warm things up and see if that is all it is.

I got a couple of cheapchineeindian wrenches at a pawn shop and just
heated them and bent them, they work fine as you are not really putting
a lot of torque on anything, more just to turn and hold things in place,
so high-end tools are not critical to the process. THey did help a lot
in doing the job fairly quickly and easily.

camshaft bolt is a no-no.

When the screw on filter is bad, it often goes bad very slowly.  This is
assuming a vehicle that is used semi regularly and fed fuel that is semi clean.

My experience is that they just begin to restrict the fuel flow to the point
that the car will run but has no power.  My NA 300D would run forever, but only
at 5 MPH around the parking lot when I bought it.  New screw on filter, then it
ran 70 no problem...

A bad turbo will go through tons of oil and make lots of blue smoke.

By the time a Benz diesel makes blue smoke from blowby it won't start
below freezing. I know this from experience. Blue smoke is oil
burning in the exhaust, it takes so much going through the engine
partially burnt it won't idle at normal speeds.

Re: [MBZ] Headlight Relays?

2014-01-08 Thread Dan Penoff
Larry,

The addition of relays to just about every car will yield an increase in
current to the headlights and the resulting increase in illumination.

It will, in fact, reduce current flow through the switch and related wiring.

This one of the best bang for your buck modifications you can do. I'm
getting ready to do it on my R129 because the 9004 lamps that are in it are not
just pathetic, they're a safety hazard because I can drive beyond the
headlights.

It will also allow me to use higher wattage lamps when I get Euro lights for it
in the near future.

I have done this on a number of my vehicles. If you have any questions, let me
know.

Dan

I did a test with piezo buzzer and scope and can see a nice signal.

I also put a piezo on block and could see that #1 incjector was causing
most of the knock.

I will try to setup a blog to post pictures...

I ordered a pop tester shims and new nozzles, not Ali express had nozzles
for $4.50 each. Not sure if they are any good but for $50 with shipping I
have to try...

Note if you are in Raleigh NC area and need pop tester hollar at me..

the first person to have the idea.

I got the Ferret gizmo in 2002 and couldn't get it to work on my 617, which
probably had 300k on the injectors. Ferret sent me a prototype box that was
supposed to be more sensitive but that didn't do it either. Now I don't
 think
Ferret is here in Michigan any more.

2014-01-08 Thread Dieselhead
I looked at filters a coupla weeks back, were
clean, and I think I changed them not that long
ago. But that was my first thought hence having
her check them. She had another can filter, but
for some reason she could not get it to screw on
the housing, she said it was not dark or nasty
looking in there (which is what I have seen when
they are nasty and dark). The in-line was not
nasty or dark, so that seemed to be OK.

She is getting it towed to a shop, I told her to
see if they could park it inside for awhile to
warm things up and see if that is all it is.

NASTY AND DARK wont happen in winter. That is
algae, and indicates you need a biocide in your
fuel to save your IP and injectors (and filters)

C'mon Kaleb this is stupid, second time today...

I was nervous of setting valves at first but on my first attempt I
managed to correct an annoying cold valve tick my '78 240D had since
the first time I'd changed the oil.

I found it a PITA with straight wrenches. Assuming I get the '78
going again come spring I'll be making up a set of wrenches,
properly thinned and bent...

-Curt

PITA with 2 combination wrenches is right. I have one ground thin.
That helps. I never bent one, but I should. I bent my 40 year old
crapsman 10mm wrench to get dead electric seats out of a 124. I'd
probably start with one of the HF long wrench sets and then bend one
of them, unless you have a place near that sells used hand tools.

I don't have to adjust them often, so I just suffer with the 2
combination wrenches.

When the screw on filter is bad, it often goes bad very slowly.
This is assuming a vehicle that is used semi regularly and fed fuel
that is semi clean.

My experience is that they just begin to restrict the fuel flow to
the point that the car will run but has no power. My NA 300D would
run forever, but only at 5 MPH around the parking lot when I bought
it. New screw on filter, then it ran 70 no problem...

My vote is like others, put it in a warm garage overnight, then
drive it home. (c:

  light from the headlights.

60%!?! Er... Probably not.

Wired appropriately, a relay _can_ decrease the voltage lost on
the way to the lamps. But large copper wires can do the same
thing. Nothing magic about a relay.

Do the W124 MBs need relays?

Need? Probably not. Benefit? Likely.

 Dan wrote:

The addition of relays to just about every car will yield an

 in illumination.

Wrong. It _can_ - but only when wired appropriately. Just putting
a relay in the circuit any old way will not necessarily help.

It will, in fact, reduce current flow through the switch and
 related wiring.

Again, it _can_.

To be helpful, the relay becomes a remote for the headlight
switch. Typically an new, heavy (large) wire and a new fuse (or
circuit breaker) is connected at the battery. This is run to a
relay mounted near the headlight. The output of the relay goes
to the headlight. The original headlight wiring (going through the
headlight switch) no longer directly drives the headlight - but the
relay instead.

Since an appropriate relay will draw a lot less current than the
headlight, the original switch and wiring are really loafing. The
heavy work of driving the headlight now goes through the new fuse,
new wire, and new relay. The whole system functions as original
since the original switches control the relay which is controlling
the headlight.

Putting a relay under the dash next to the headlight switch will
not make the headlights any brighter - but it still could isolate
the headlight switch from the headlight current.

Putting a relay next to the headlight, but using the original
wiring will not make the headlights any brighter - but again it
could isolate the switch from the heavy current.

A _really_ big relay could conceivably draw as much current as the
headlights.

So - an appropriate relay, wired appropriately, can:
 * decrease the current flow through the original wiring and switch
 * isolate the original wiring and switch from the headlight current
 * decrease the voltage drop so the headlight is brighter

[MBZ] OT - ATX power supply versions

2014-01-08 Thread OK Don
How do I figure out what new fangled power supply spec I need for my 5 year

The old 300 watt supply is not up to the task, but there are WAY too many
versions of ATX since I last looked.
Example, main connection: 24 pin, 20 pin +4, 24 pin with detachable 4 pins,
etc.
The old supply has a 4 wire connector plugged in right beside the CPU, what
is this called?
Sheesh - all the new things they think up while I'm asleep for five years!

If it matters, the base unit is an HP a6750t.
