I actually thought of doing it to a 4matic, maybe my 250k wagon if I buy a nicer one to replace it. I'd put 3 point pins on the front and use a 15 high tractor blade with skids on the blade and a telescoping top link. I'd have to leave it in the driveway or take the blade off to go anywhere, but the cost would be next to nothing. I don't recall what my 1976 Subaru 4x4 wagon weighed, but it wasn't much, and the 1600cc flat four only made about 50hp. With four snow tires, it was fun to play with in the snow. (With a minor correction) I think that is likely the problem with my 115 300D as it does not like to start even in temperatures near the freezing point. I am thinking there might have been condensation in the tank, or water in the fuel, that has frozen in the tank filter or lines somewhere. Told her to put in some dri-gas (alcohol stuff) and some new diesel, she went to auto parts store and got some dri-gas and a can for diesel, put that stuff in the tank, still no go. I looked at filters a coupla weeks back, were clean, and I think I changed them not that long ago. But that was my first thought hence having her check them. She had another can filter, but for some reason she could not get it to screw on the housing, she said it was not dark or nasty looking in there (which is what I have seen when they are nasty and dark). The in-line was not nasty or dark, so that seemed to be OK. I got a couple of cheapchineeindian wrenches at a pawn shop and just heated them and bent them, they work fine as you are not really putting a lot of torque on anything, more just to turn and hold things in place, so high-end tools are not critical to the process. When the screw on filter is bad, it often goes bad very slowly. This is assuming a vehicle that is used semi regularly and fed fuel that is semi clean. My experience is that they just begin to restrict the fuel flow to the point that the car will run but has no power. My NA 300D would run forever, but only at 5 MPH around the parking lot when I bought it. New screw on filter, then it ran 70 no problem... My vote is like others, put it in a warm garage overnight, then drive it home. A bad turbo will go through tons of oil and make lots of blue smoke. By the time a Benz diesel makes blue smoke from blowby it won't start below freezing. I know this from experience. Re: [MBZ] Headlight Relays?
Larry, The addition of relays to just about every car will yield an increase in current to the headlights and the resulting increase in illumination. It will, in fact, reduce current flow through the switch and related wiring. This one of the best bang for your buck modifications you can do. I'm getting ready to do it on my R129 because the 9004 lamps that are in it are not just pathetic, they're a safety hazard because I can drive beyond the headlights. It will also allow me to use higher wattage lamps when I get Euro lights for it in the near future. I have done this on a number of my vehicles. If you have any questions, let me know. She is getting it towed to a shop, I told her to see if they could park it inside for awhile to warm things up and see if that is all it is. --R NASTY AND DARK wont happen in winter. C'mon Kaleb this is stupid, second time today... I was nervous of setting valves at first but on my first attempt I managed to correct an annoying cold valve tick my '78 240D had since the first time I'd changed the oil. I found it a PITA with straight wrenches. Assuming I get the '78 going again come spring I'll be making up a set of wrenches, properly thinned and bent... -Curt PITA with 2 combination wrenches is right. I have one ground thin. That helps. I never bent one, but I should. I bent my 40 year old crapsman 10mm wrench to get dead electric seats out of a 124. I'd probably start with one of the HF long wrench sets and then bend one of them, unless you have a place near that sells used hand tools. I don't have to adjust them often, so I just suffer with the 2 combination wrenches. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

On Jan 8, 2014, at 6:02 PM, Larry T wrote: A weak spot in my 911 wiring is the headlight circuits. i am told all the current flows through the switch and the addition of a relay will reduce the load on the switch and extend its life. The relays will also add as much as 60% more light from the headlights. 60%!?! Er... Probably not. Wired appropriately, a relay _can_ decrease the voltage lost on the way to the lamps. But large copper wires can do the same thing. Nothing magic about a relay. Do the W124 MBs need relays? Need? Probably not. Benefit? Likely. Dan wrote: The addition of relays to just about every car will yield an increase in current to the headlights and the resulting increase in illumination. Wrong. It _can_ - but only when wired appropriately. Just putting a relay in the circuit any old way will not necessarily help. It will, in fact, reduce current flow through the switch and related wiring. Again, it _can_. To be helpful, the relay becomes a remote for the headlight switch. Typically an new, heavy (large) wire and a new fuse (or circuit breaker) is connected at the battery. This is run to a relay mounted near the headlight. The output of the relay goes to the headlight. The original headlight wiring (going through the headlight switch) no longer directly drives the headlight - but the relay instead. Since an appropriate relay will draw a lot less current than the headlight, the original switch and wiring are really loafing. The heavy work of driving the headlight now goes through the new fuse, new wire, and new relay. The whole system functions as original since the original switches control the relay which is controlling the headlight. Putting a relay under the dash next to the headlight switch will not make the headlights any brighter - but it still could isolate the headlight switch from the headlight current. Putting a relay next to the headlight, but using the original wiring will not make the headlights any brighter - but again it could isolate the switch from the heavy current. A _really_ big relay could conceivably draw as much current as the headlights. So - an appropriate relay, wired appropriately, can: * decrease the current flow through the original wiring and switch * isolate the original wiring and switch from the headlight current * decrease the voltage drop so the headlight is brighter -- Philip, being kinda picky ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT - ATX power supply versions
Ah, that's probably the web site I need (Toms hardware). Mine has 24 pins to the motherboard, and the new graphics card (Geforce GT630) does not have a separate power connector - it seems to expect 20A through the PCI-x connector! I got a new video card and it wants 20A on the 12V buss. The old 300 watt supply is not up to the task, but there are WAY too many versions of ATX since I last looked. Example, main connection: 24 pin, 20 pin +4, 24 pin with detachable 4 pins, etc. The old supply has a 4 wire connector plugged in right beside the CPU, what is this called? Sheesh - all the new things they think up while I'm asleep for five years! How many pins does the main connection on your motherboard have? That will be the determining factor. I forget what the separate, 4-pin connector supplies to the motherboard. It could be an extra 3.3 VDC connection to help power the CPU(s). There are websites that have that information. Tom's Hardware is one of them: http://www.tomshardware.com Does your graphics card have a separate 4-pin connector on it? If it does, it requires 12 VDC. All of the big, power-hungry graphics cards have them. If it matters, the base unit is an HP a6750t. Not really. Besides I don't know what that is.
