When I bought my 2.3-16, it had dead spheres and a valve that wouldn't hold pressure. I got a used valve from somebody who downgraded to lowering springs, and new spheres. When those spheres died, I let the tire pressure down to 20 psi and drove it carefully 6 miles to the cottage to store it. When I got there, the suspension was flat again, that 'gentle' drive to the lake killed the replacement control valve. IIRC, my W201 uses S123 spheres and S124 control valve, and the 124 valve isn't rebuildable. Re: [MBZ] ULSD now Ethanol
Philip, As you said, I can only relate my personal experience with ethanol. And that is, my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 liter magnum V8 does not like ethanol gas. It idles rougher and it gets about 2 mpg less. Again, this is my experience with a big engine. When I can find Marathon out in the country without ethanol, I fill up the truck and it's happy for awhile. Unfortunately, I live too close to Atlanta and the state requires the stations to sell ethanol added gas within what's considered the metro area. However, I've used it in my gas weed trimmer and 3 lawn mowers with no problems that I've noticed as it relates to small engines. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. [MBZ] Counterfeit Oil Filters?
Wanted to follow up on my findings to-date: Took Indian oil filter to the dealer yesterday. Other than the hologram and source being indicated as Austria on the dealer part, the outside looked identical. We compared the actual filters and found a few differences: 1.) Dealer part had Made in Austria stamped on it, along with a time/date stamp indicating when it was made. Non-dealer part had Made in India by Kriloskar and no time/date stamp 2.) Heavy paper webbing that wraps around the outside of the filter pleats on the dealer filter came to within 1/2' of the metal filter ends. Non-dealer part webbing was 1 from metal filter ends 3.) Dealer filter had an interior metal tube with a few holes in it. Non-dealer filter had metal tube with many holes in it. 4.) Dealer filter had no visible materials inside of the filter Non-dealer filter had glob of glue at top of filter inside where the pleat material met the top end cap. 5.) Pleats of filter material had the same count for both filters. Based on the comparison I'm not putting any of these filters in my cars until I know more. I contacted MBUSA since the dealer wasn't really interested in getting involved, which I can understand. MBUSA has asked for one of the filters for inspection, which I will be sending them on Monday. Suffice to say at this point I would not be putting any Indian made MB filters in my cars. It's simply not worth save a couple of bucks to take the risk. Re: [MBZ] 300td sls troubles
So I went to a dealership for a Club High Mileage event and had an array of seasoned techs work on my suspension problem. :) The consensus was that the bouncy rear end was NOT related to the air cells (spheres), since they are new. We lowered the ride height by adjusting the rear valve linkage, from 16 to a litle over 14 as measured from the center of the rear wheel hub to the wheel arch. Then we lowered the car to the floor and ran the engine while a couple burly techs sat on the deck with the tailgate raised. The level of the rear dropped down, but after 5 minutes there was no perceptible rise. We put it back on the lift and inspected the rear struts, which were German OEM and quite clean (e.g., not original to the car). The springs measured 17mm in diameter, but the correct OEM springs are supposed to be only 15.95, so obviously these are replacement springs. Could these incorrect springs be the source of my problem? Or is there more likely to be a problem with the rear suspension valve? SLS fluid is recirculating normally and there are no leaks in the system, but the failure of the rear end to rebound while under load may suggest a problem with the valve. Thoughts anyone? Re: [MBZ] 300td sls troubles
Andrew, From my experience with SLS, I believe that you've got leveling valve issues. Here's my logic: If changing the leveling valve settings causes the suspension height to change, the struts must be good. If by some chance they were bad, it wouldn't raise at all, assuming the seals on the pistons were bad, which is the only part inside of them. From what you describe the inly possible variable is the leveling valve. Rebuild/replace the leveling valve. Re: [MBZ] ULSD now Ethanol
I think tanks that are protected do better than those left out. Lately I've taken to covering the gas caps on the snowmobiles with a rubber glove. Older snowmobile gas caps often have a vented gauge which allows water infiltration even (especially?) when the sled is covered with a tarp. The rubber glove allows for some excess space should the tank pressurize in the warm but doesn't allow water in. That seems to have helped me a lot. For nearly 30 years I have been using ethanol blend gasoline [petrol]. I began seeking it out and have used it almost exclusively for 25 years. I tried it way back then and discovered the carburetor maintenance on my cars went _way_ down with the blend. Since then, I have used it for cars, lawn mowers, chainsaws, line trimmers, etc. Some of the mowers have repeatedly sat for 6 to 8 months with fuel in the tank. I often mix a stabilizer (Stabil initially, more recently Sea Foam) with the two stroke - but not always. In those 25 years I cannot blame the fuel for even one problem with any of the engines. Zero. Yet there are a lot of people who claim lots of problems caused by ethanol. I don't understand why my experience is _so_ different. In amongst all the crap was a HP printer, which looked OK so I took it home. Fired it up and all the lights where on but the paper was not feeding properly, so I pulled it apart and some kid must dropped a safety pin in there. Right O now the paper was feeding properly but nothing was being printed, hmmn me thinks, the cartridges must have dried out, a quick search indicates that standing them in hot water may clean em out. So I give that a whirl and sure enough we have printing but it's still not 100% but I am just keeping it as a spare for now. Re: [MBZ] ULSD now Ethanol
Have you done a tune-up on it? Replaced the fuel filter? I had a '96 Dodge Dakota with the magnum 5.2l v8 and I never detected any issues running with ethanol fuel. My guess is your truck has a marginally dirty fuel system which the ethanol is gradually scrubbing into the injectors. I'd further guess that if you filled it with ethanol fuel and ran it hard enough and long enough (might take a couple thousand hard miles) you'd either get past the problem or plug the fuel filter. Unfortunately if your pickup is like my Dakota the filter is in the tank and is somewhat of a bear to replace. -Curt Date: Sat, 19 Apr 2014 12:34:27 + (UTC) From: roger...@comcast.net To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] ULSD now Ethanol Message-ID: 1254472027.29354809.1397910867599.javamail.r...@comcast.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Philip, As you said, I can only relate my personal experience with ethanol. Re: [MBZ] 300td sls troubles
Sounds like they further misadjusted the linkage. The valve is working if they were able to influence the resting height. The system's operation is clearly described in 32-501. It should be adjusted so that the unloaded vehicle's resting height is determined only by the base pressure. The height control valve should only activate if the rear end is deflected significantly (a couple of inches). But if they've overadjusted the lever, it may not be activating when load is added to the car. When moving the height control lever (disconnected from the torsion bar linkage), you can feel the point at which the base pressure circuit takes over from the height control circuit. There's a very subtle notch feeling as the height control lever strikes the filling ball valve. Remember there are two separate control modes: the base pressure circuit (when functioning correctly) completely overrides the height control lever in the downwards direction after a certain point. You can put the lever all the way to the drain position and the car will not fall below normal resting height. The base pressure circuit actually moves the ball valve out of range for the control lever to prevent loss of base pressure. We are talking about adjustments of a few millimetres here. This is not something that should be done by people who haven't read 32-501. D. One thing also to look at it, and I presume your mechs did this, is the condition of the plastic bushings on the turnbuckle linkage. If those are not solid or are missing it will not allow the system to function properly. Have you ascertained if the pump is actually pumping pressurized fluid into the system? --R On 4/19/14 4:24 PM, David Bruckmann wrote: Sounds like they further misadjusted the linkage. Re: [MBZ] Cuban Missile Crisis - Wilton?
Well, there's not much to tell, but here it is. In late October 1962, I was about to finish the flying phase of B-52 Combat Crew Training School (CCTS) at Walker AFB, Roswell, NM. I had flown my last training mission and went to the base the following morning to plan for my final check ride (performance evaluation flight), which was scheduled for the next day. As I parked my car, I noticed much more activity than usual. Entering the building, I was surprised to see all of the instructors wearing side arms and flight suits. When I inquired about all the activity, my instructor told me about the President's speech of the previous day and that all of the instructors were on alert. The Cuban Missile Crisis was on - I had missed news about it the previous day because of my long flight. The instructors told us students to be at a meeting at the Officers Club at 1300 (1:00 PM). At 1300, the school commandant informed us, The school is closed; go to your home bases immediately. Several of my classmates who had been on B-47 crews went back to their old units and went on alert with B-47's, some of which dispersed to municipal airports or remote sites out in the desert. My wife, Alice, the children and I left New Mexico early the next morning. My home base was to be Robins AFB, GA, but my B-52G unit there was temporarily at Loring AFB, ME, because of runway repairs at Robins. Not knowing if I may have to go on to Loring soon after arriving at Robins, I drove Alice and the children on to her parents' home near Nashville, NC, before I went to Robins. The administrators at Robins were not very concerned about my going on to Loring - 'told me to get the family settled, etc. The following weekend, I drove back to NC and took Alice and the children back down to Robins. There we bought a house and moved in. On base I did lieutenant gofer jobs. 'Drove down to McCoy AFB, FL, for a two-week airborne guided missile course; 'even flew as a passenger aboard an Air Force C-54 to deliver top secret emergency war order materials to a planning officer in our unit at Loring. In December, a couple of other trainees I drove back to California to attend another two-week guided missile course. By January, the rest of my unit had returned to Robins, and by mid-January, I finally started flying B-52 training missions again - I had not been in the airplane for at least 2½ months; needless to say, I was really rusty and did not perform very impressively on these first few missions. I passed a check ride, anyway, was declared combat- ready and started pulling ground alert duty about mid-February '63. That I can try on my own - great idea. -- Saturday, 19 April 2014, 11:28PM -0400 from Mitch Haley m...@voyager.net: Rick Hawkins Java wrote: OK, I SAY that no matter what the height of your springs you can adjust the rod to the control valve to put the valve lever to the neutral position if that's where you want it I'd still like to know what makes Andy's wagon go boing, boing, boing. Would having too high a spring rate on the steel springs cause it to be oversprung and underdamped to the point where it would fail a does it bounce more than twice? test? Re: [MBZ] Testing apple times
Here are some tips for cleaning Epson printer heads (I've done more than a few, just finished up reviving an old R800 head for use in an R2880). First, the dye inks do NOT dry out in the printer. They become very viscous, but do not dry. Pigment inks do indeed dry down, but are readily resuspended. Second, cleaning cycles are only good for removing air, they will NOT fix plugs, and paradoxically, make things worse by applying a vacuum to the whole head. When the head is moved off the seal, gumming ink results in a vacuum still inside, and air is sucked up from the bottom, preventing the ink from being fired. Third, the clogs from sitting unused are almost always ink collecting on the bottom of the head and plugging the nozzles. You can suck in through the print head forever, and if you don't remove the collected grunge it will not print. It DOES drip ink all over, but the droplets will not fire onto the paper. To clean one in this condition: Install cartridges filled with ink -- aftermarkets with third party ink is a best choice, you may use quite a bit and Epson cartridges are expensive for cleaning. If you want, once you get it cleared out you can switch back. Turn the printer on and press the ink cartridge button. Once the carriage parks in the cartridge replacement station, unplug the printer WITHOUT turning it off. This leaves the carriage free to move by hand. Fold a paper towel to fit in the channel the printhead travels in over the paper. It needs to be thick enough to actually touch the prinheatd but thin enough to push the printhead over. Saturate the paper towel with Windex or other spray glass cleaner. I'm not sure I would use 409, it might be too strong. Lay the towel in the channel and wipe the printhead over it. Likely it will instantly turn black with gummy ink. Remove the towel and replace with a fresh one, adjusting thickness as necessary to gently wipe the bottom of the printhead until you get obvious traces of the correct ink colors. Get a spray bottle of windex or other glass cleaner and carefully fill the sponge and seal of the cartridge cappping station. Use a dry paper towel to blot up the dissolved ink until the station is mostly clean. Wipe down the rubber seal, make sure it is not gummy with dried ink. Fill the sponge in the capping station with Windex and push the carriage over it. Briefly plug the printer in until the carriage drops onto the seal and unplug it again. You don't want the pump to suck the Windex out, you want to soak the bottom of the head. Leave it at least a couple hours. Overnight is better. Next day plug the printer in and turn it on. It should do a quick cleaning cycle. Print a nozzle check. If you are really lucky, you will get at least most of the nozzles firing. Ignore the fact that the ink colors are likely wrong, you have been mixing the ink with cleaner and it will wick up into the nozzle chambers randomly. If you have a decent number of clear nozzles, print a purge page (marruttusa.com has a selection). By the end of the page, you should be able to tell if you have decent ink flow or not. Drips of ink onto the page means you have Windex in the nozzles, it causes ink to leak. This is not a big issue a this point. Print another nozzle check. Should be better. If not, do a clean cycle but unplug the printer when the wiper blade is up -- it's beside the capping station, watch for the printer to flip it up to wipe the printhead. Crap built up on the wiper simply plugs the nozzles by wiping gummy dried ink into them, hardly a way to clear them. Wipe it down with windex, make sure it's quite clean. Plug it back in and do one clean cycle, then print a nozzle check. With some luck, a dye printer will be working pretty well by now. Pigment printers require more work, usually. If a couple cycles of soaking and printing purge pages doesn't do the trick, you will have to find some syringes and plastic tubing that will fit over the spikes the cartridges connect to on the printhead. push the ink button and unplug the printer when the carriage is free. Remove the cartridges, and fold up a dry paper towel to fit under the printhead. Heat some windex in the microwave -- you can add some glycerin if you have it to raise the viscocity, it helps later -- and fill a syringe with the hot windex and attach some tubing to allow you to connect to the spike. Push the tubing over the spike for whatever color isn't working right, and move the carriage over the dry paper towel. GENTLY press on the syringe plunger to force hot windex through the printhead. If it won't move under gentle pressure, pull back on the syringe to suck the gummy ink up out of the printhead. Don't pull too hard, you don't want to blow any seals. You may have to repeat the pull, release, press, release, pull, etc

OK, I SAY that no matter what the height of your springs you can adjust the rod to the control valve to put the valve lever to the neutral position if that's where you want it Yes, but that doesn't center the travel of the suspension so that it doesn't bounce off the upper end's stops. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
