Re: [MBZ] bouncy sls troubles
If I understand the system correctly, the valve determines the height by filling the struts until the point is reached where the valve goes into neutral. I like to think of the struts as hydraulic cylinders with a relief function which allows the car to ride nice. That relief function is achieved via nitrogen filled spheres, it is in effect the pressure in the spheres which is the flexible thing, without it we all know that a SLS car will ride like a brick. So I am not sure what would cause a SLS car to go boing boing? Re: [MBZ] Testing apple times
A better suggestion: get a laser printer. Higher upfront costs, but a lot easier and cheaper to use, IMHO. Dan Sent from my iPad On Apr 20, 2014, at 12:32 AM, Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net wrote: Here are some tips for cleaning Epson printer heads (I've done more than a few, just finished up reviving an old R800 head for use in an R2880). First, the dye inks do NOT dry out in the printer. They become very viscous, but do not dry. Pigment inks do indeed dry down, but are readily resuspended. Second, cleaning cycles are only good for removing air, they will NOT fix plugs, and paradoxically, make things worse by applying a vacuum to the whole head. When the head is moved off the seal, gumming ink results in a vacuum still inside, and air is sucked up from the bottom, preventing the ink from being fired. Third, the clogs from sitting unused are almost always ink collecting on the bottom of the head and plugging the nozzles. You can suck in through the print head forever, and if you don't remove the collected grunge it will not print. It DOES drip ink all over, but the droplets will not fire onto the paper. To clean one in this condition: Install cartridges filled with ink -- aftermarkets with third party ink is a best choice, you may use quite a bit and Epson cartridges are expensive for cleaning. If you want, once you get it cleared out you can switch back. Turn the printer on and press the ink cartridge button. Once the carriage parks in the cartridge replacement station, unplug the printer WITHOUT turning it off. This leaves the carriage free to move by hand. Fold a paper towel to fit in the channel the printhead travels in over the paper. It needs to be thick enough to actually touch the prinheatd but thin enough to push the printhead over. Saturate the paper towel with Windex or other spray glass cleaner. I'm not sure I would use 409, it might be too strong. Lay the towel in the channel and wipe the printhead over it. Likely it will instantly turn black with gummy ink. Remove the towel and replace with a fresh one, adjusting thickness as necessary to gently wipe the bottom of the printhead until you get obvious traces of the correct ink colors. Get a spray bottle of windex or other glass cleaner and carefully fill the sponge and seal of the cartridge cappping station. Use a dry paper towel to blot up the dissolved ink until the station is mostly clean. Wipe down the rubber seal, make sure it is not gummy with dried ink. Fill the sponge in the capping station with Windex and push the carriage over it. Briefly plug the printer in until the carriage drops onto the seal and unplug it again. You don't want the pump to suck the Windex out, you want to soak the bottom of the head. Leave it at least a couple hours. Overnight is better. Next day plug the printer in and turn it on. It should do a quick cleaning cycle. Print a nozzle check. If you are really lucky, you will get at least most of the nozzles firing. Ignore the fact that the ink colors are likely wrong, you have been mixing the ink with cleaner and it will wick up into the nozzle chambers randomly. If you have a decent number of clear nozzles, print a purge page (marruttusa.com has a selection). By the end of the page, you should be able to tell if you have decent ink flow or not. Drips of ink onto the page means you have Windex in the nozzles, it causes ink to leak. This is not a big issue a this point. Print another nozzle check. Should be better. If not, do a clean cycle but unplug the printer when the wiper blade is up -- it's beside the capping station, watch for the printer to flip it up to wipe the printhead. Crap built up on the wiper simply plugs the nozzles by wiping gummy dried ink into them, hardly a way to clear them. Wipe it down with windex, make sure it's quite clean. Plug it back in and do one clean cycle, then print a nozzle check. With some luck, a dye printer will be working pretty well by now. Pigment printers require more work, usually. If a couple cycles of soaking and printing purge pages doesn't do the trick, you will have to find some syringes and plastic tubing that will fit over the spikes the cartridges connect to on the printhead. push the ink button and unplug the printer when the carriage is free. Remove the cartridges, and fold up a dry paper towel to fit under the printhead. Heat some windex in the microwave -- you can add some glycerin if you have it to raise the viscocity, it helps later -- and fill a syringe with the hot windex and attach some tubing to allow you to connect to the spike. Push the tubing over the spike for whatever color isn't working right, and move the carriage over the dry paper towel. GENTLY press on the syringe plunger to force hot windex through the printhead. If it won't move under gentle

You wouldn't make that suggestion if you compared color photographs printed on the two machines. You will be very frustrated if you use an Epson photo printer for plain text, though. It will look perfect, but the ink is expensive and you will have trouble with the color when you do print photographs. For plain text, I recommend a laser or Cannon/HP printer with pigment black ink. Less expensive and less maintenance. Nothing beats one of the Epson printers for photographs though, especially the Claria II dye printers on glossy paper. Not maintenance free though. Re: [MBZ] bouncy sls troubles
If I understand the system correctly, the valve determines the height by filling the struts until the point is reached where the valve goes into neutral. Yes, and that point is _supposed_ to be (approximately) the center of travel of the cylinders. I suspect that here there is additional damage, and/or wrong parts, etc. so that the system is still all out of whack. The system is fundamentally simple, but the geometry is critical. The leveling valve is poorly named, its purpose is NOT to make the car level. Its purpose is to CENTER the suspension travel regardless of load. If the rest of the car is in proper shape only THEN is the car level too. Who was it that had black suspension oil? Isn't that due to the rubber in the spheres decomposing? -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] bouncy sls troubles
Not exactly. The system achieves a base pressure irrespective of the position of the valve. It can be in the drain position, the system will still pressurise. If the control lever reaches the filling position because of added load (or maladjustment) it will admit more fluid to raise the car so the valve once again achieves the neutral position. [MBZ] I'm back
So lets talk about Mercedes! I have temporarily given up on my search for a pick up truck... I guess you could say my heart wasn't really in it. I decided it would make much more sense to get a W123 or W124 wagon with a trailer hitch. I know how to fix them, can get cheap parts, and they're not so... ugly. My 5x10 utility trailer can hold quite a bit when its needed. Unfortunately, wagons aren't easy to find. I don't mind ugly, but it has to be safe and run reasonably well, or be priced accordingly. Since I like challenges, I responded to this ad: http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/4398432114.html The owner told me they are just looking for a good home... bingo: I'm a good home. I went to check it out, but was disappointed. It was last on the road in 1994 and stored in a damp garage. The wheels were frozen solid. Previous rust repair on the rockers. All the parts needed to put the car back together were spread all over the place and covered in rust (including things like the cam and rockers). The rebuilt engine was lovely, except it wasn't assembled beyond torquing the head down to the block. Everything was covered in surface rust... just enough to start some pitting. The lower oil pan was off and it was the same inside. What a shame. It might be salvageable, but the engine would have to been taken down completely again to check. And the car wasn't worth putting together. So I passed, even if it could be had for a much cheaper price than advertised. They discussed scrapping the whole thing as an alternative to selling, at which point I might be interested again. To satisfy my need for some utility for now, I put one of those cheap Curt trailer hitches on my 83 300D... the kind that bolts through the spare tire well. Despite being a very original car that drives really outstanding and only has 140k miles, I have to continually remind myself that this car is my beater which I bought for daily driving and its ok to do such things. I still feel guilty. Installation was easy... about 30 minutes to drill some holes and torque it down. Wiring up the lights nicely took much more time, as I soldiered directly to the pins in the taillight connectors. Its hard to melt that 30 year old solder in those lovely silver pins. Elsewhere in the garage, I pulled the head off of the 1970 bat-shit 280SE some of you may know about. The very short version of the story is: I bought the car between christmas and new years. 77k documented miles, original paint, very nice. It was in a barn and covered in bird and bat droppings for several years. I got it running in place and drove it out onto a trailer. I got it home, replaced a huge number of parts to make it reliable. It was somewhat of a rush job, as I had to get the car on the road to be used in the final episode of The Americans season 2. (Look for the brown W108 shot from behind). I got the car all back together, brand new tires on it, and drove it about 200 miles total over the course of a week. Everything was great, except it would run hot. Not too bad, and the car made it on TV. After much diagnosis, I decided the head gasket was at fault. I pulled the head last weekend and I'm waiting for the machine shop to give me the ok to put it back together. While I'm waiting I'm doing other odds and ends, including cleaning up the injectors in my new ebay purchase: an ultrasonic cleaner. I drove my 67 300SEL last weekend for about 125 miles... the first real driving in warm weather now that the roads are free of salt. I'm happy to report it does very well. The hydraulic fan coupler which I had to rebuild twice actually works and doesn't leak. After coming off the highway, the fan was clearly engaged and pulling air. Still huge amounts of work to do on this car, but its wonderful to drive it as I go. I guess thats enough Mercedes stuff for now... its been a busy few weeks. Re: [MBZ] sls troubles black suspension oil
I think the pump rebuild kits aren't too expensive, but more expensive than a fluid change. After you replace the spheres, change the fluid and watch the color. If engine oil it's contaminating, would the fluid level change? Would the engine oil level change? Easiest way to change the fluid is to direct the return line at the engine compartment to drain into a different container, start the car, and replace the fluid in the reservoir as the level drops. Once the drain line runs clear, with the car off, load up the rear, open the bleed valve and drain out the sphere-side. Be careful as the rear will drop quite a bit. Top up the reservoir, done. i may also have oil intrusion I don't see how, there's essentially no contact between the systems. I had ours apart a bunch. The only engine oil in the area is a little bit of splash at the drive end of the pump. And there's an oil seal there. Most of the pump is under high pressure. For it to be black enough to see from motor oil intrusion, the viscosity ought to be more like motor oil. You can probably find a nice '95 wagon for the same or less money than an equivalent 123 wagon, and you'll get dual airbags and anti lock brakes, which the 123 almost certainly will not have. Re: [MBZ] sls troubles black suspension oil
It's hydrous optic, like brake fluid. Old oil can appear to be black or very dark. Get a couple of liters of new stuff and a new filter. Find a long piece of tubing you can put bopper the return line once you have freed it from the cap. Put the other end in a large, clear container. Start the engine and have a liter of the new stuff handy. Fill the reservoir as the level drops and the old stuff fills the container. When it runs clear, shut off the engine and top off the reservoir. You can have someone bounce the rear while you're doing this, but it's not mandatory. Well I really wouldn't argue that. My 79 240D was my daily driver for years. That's on I95 going into Boston. Succumbed to tin worm at ~ 300k miles. Re: [MBZ] sls troubles black suspension oil
Makes the eyes water? Gerry It's hydrous optic, like brake fluid. Early 124 wagons suffer from cracking rear subframe mounts. Later years had beefier metal in back, no cracking. Plus they look much better than the early models, came with stock euro headlights. [MBZ] sls troubles black
thanks, I thought about the pressure keeping potential oil out i haven't felt the oil, but i probably have not had to add any for a year or more it's right in the middle of the reservoir or maybe 60% full the sls fluid is lighter wt than motor oil but i wonder if i could feel the difference mixed in it could be spheres and hoses deteriorating xx rick Rick Hawkins From: Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net Date: April 20, 2014 3:13:27 PM EDT To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] sls troubles black suspension oil Reply-To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com i may also have oil intrusion I don't see how, there's essentially no contact between the systems. I had ours apart a bunch. The only engine oil in the area is a little bit of splash at the drive end of the pump. And there's an oil seal there. Most of the pump is under high pressure. For it to be black enough to see from motor oil intrusion, the viscosity ought to be more like motor oil. Re: [MBZ] bouncy sls troubles
Jim wrote: Who was it that had black suspension oil? Isn't that due to the rubber in the spheres decomposing? I did. But on mine it was the shaft seal on the pump. I suspect it was run without fluid for too long and really gouged the shaft. I took the pump from another car and mix/matched parts to get the best from each. Rusty supplied the new shaft seal, as I recall.
