Re: [MBZ] OT printers

Peter F. posted something on how to fix them awhile ago. I have an Epson that
won't go so I saved it off.

Here are some tips for cleaning Epson printer heads (I've done more
than a few, just finished up reviving an old R800 head for use in an
R2880).

First, the dye inks do NOT dry out in the printer.  They become very
viscous, but do not dry.  Pigment inks do indeed dry down, but are
readily resuspended.

Second, cleaning cycles are only good for removing air, they will NOT
fix plugs, and paradoxically, make things worse by applying a vacuum
to the whole head.  When the head is moved off the seal, gumming ink
results in a vacuum still inside, and air is sucked up from the
bottom, preventing the ink from being fired.

Third, the clogs from sitting unused are almost always ink collecting
on the bottom of the head and plugging the nozzles.  You can suck in
through the print head forever, and if you don't remove the collected
grunge it will not print.  It DOES drip ink all over, but the droplets
will not fire onto the paper.

To clean one in this condition:

Install cartridges filled with ink -- aftermarkets with third party
ink is a best choice, you may use quite a bit and Epson cartridges are
expensive for cleaning.  If you want, once you get it cleared out you
can switch back.

Turn the printer on and press the ink cartridge button.  Once the
carriage parks in the cartridge replacement station, unplug the
printer WITHOUT turning it off.  This leaves the carriage free to move
by hand.

Fold a paper towel to fit in the channel the printhead travels in over
the paper.  It needs to be thick enough to actually touch the
prinheatd but thin enough to push the printhead over.  Saturate the
paper towel with Windex or other spray glass cleaner.  I'm not sure I
would use 409, it might be too strong.  Lay the towel in the channel
and wipe the printhead over it.  Likely it will instantly turn black
with gummy ink.  Remove the towel and replace with a fresh one,
adjusting thickness as necessary to gently wipe the bottom of the
printhead until you get obvious traces of the correct ink colors.

Get a spray bottle of windex or other glass cleaner and carefully fill
the sponge and seal of the cartridge cappping station.  Use a dry
paper towel to blot up the dissolved ink until the station is mostly
clean.  Wipe down the rubber seal, make sure it is not gummy with
dried ink.

Fill the sponge in the capping station with Windex and push the
carriage over it.  Briefly plug the printer in until the carriage
drops onto the seal and unplug it again.  You don't want the pump to
suck the Windex out, you want to soak the bottom of the head.  Leave
it at least a couple hours.  Overnight is better.

Next day plug the printer in and turn it on.  It should do a quick
cleaning cycle.  Print a nozzle check.  If you are really lucky, you
will get at least most of the nozzles firing.  Ignore the fact that
the ink colors are likely wrong, you have been mixing the ink with
cleaner and it will wick up into the nozzle chambers randomly.

If you have a decent number of clear nozzles, print a purge page
(marruttusa.com has a selection).  By the end of the page, you should
be able to tell if you have decent ink flow or not.  Drips of ink onto
the page means you have Windex in the nozzles, it causes ink  to
leak.  This is not a big issue a this point.

Print another nozzle check. Should be better.  If not, do a clean
cycle but unplug the printer when the wiper blade is up -- it's beside
the capping station, watch for the printer to flip it up to wipe the
printhead.  Crap built up on the wiper simply plugs the nozzles by
wiping gummy dried ink into them, hardly a way to clear them.  Wipe it
down with windex, make sure it's quite clean.

Plug it back in and do one clean cycle, then print a nozzle check.
With some luck, a dye printer will be working pretty well by now.
Pigment printers require more work, usually.

If a couple cycles of soaking and printing purge pages doesn't do the
trick, you will have to find some syringes and plastic tubing that
will fit over the spikes the cartridges connect to on the printhead.
push the ink button and unplug the printer when the carriage is free.
Remove the cartridges, and fold up a dry paper towel to fit under the
printhead.  Heat some windex in the microwave -- you can add some
glycerin if you have it to raise the viscocity, it helps later -- and
fill a syringe with the hot windex and attach some tubing to allow you
to connect to the spike.  Push the tubing over the spike for whatever
color isn't

[MBZ] OT - The Dunking

2014-08-06 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

THE DUNKING
By Wilton Strickland

During the spring of 1938, a couple of months before I turned 4, I was
in the fields on a hot, sunny afternoon with Daddy and a couple of my older
brothers, who were preparing the fields for the year's tobacco crop. The
farm was in Wake County, NC, at the end of a mile-long dirt road off Poole
Road and is now paved and known as Hodge Road. We were across a thickly
wooded area a mile or more from the house.
When I became thirsty, Daddy told me to go down to the spring to get a
drink of water. The spring was in the woods between two steep hills not far
from the fields and was often used by the family as a source of good
drinking water when working on that part of the farm. The water was always
clear, cold and flowing profusely from within the side of the hill. A round
depression about 2 feet in diameter and about a foot deep had been dug at
the spring to form a sort of basin. There were many small rocks on the
bottom of the basin and larger rocks around the perimeter. A small, dry
gourd with a long, straight handle always hung on a tree nearby to be used
as a dipper from which to drink.
As I started into the woods toward the spring, Daddy yelled to me, Be
careful! Don't fall in! We don't have time for a funeral! He always said
that when we were about to be in a bit of danger. He said it in sort of a
joking manner, but he was serious about wanting us to be careful.
At the spring, I ignored the dipper and got down on my hands and knees
intending to drink directly from the small pool of cold water like an animal
and promptly tumbled headfirst into it! It was quite a shock, of course,
and I came up gasping for air and screaming for Daddy. Because of the thick
woods and steep slope between us, though, he could not hear me.
I walked back up the slope and through the woods to Daddy, dripping a
trail of water and whimpering all the way. He tried to comfort me a bit,
but what I really needed was dry clothes. Neither he nor one of my
brothers could leave the field to take me home. I walked alone back through
the woods to the house, where Mama helped me change clothes and gave me lots
of warm hugs.

[MBZ] messed up trans electric socket

2014-08-06 Thread clay via Mercedes
The w220 went for fresh shoes last week and the tire shop decided that all
upper and lower control arms needed to come out. Quoted about $2500 for the
job. SWMBA threw a fit. I told her I would check with my indy, which I just
did. He acknowledges that there is some wear, but nothing to worry about. The
job will want to get done, but to hold off until there is more going on.

He did find that the computer connection to the transmission is doing the well
known wicking of fluid. It is early, so there should be no damage. I got a
date two weeks out to handle that. The right side CAT is also failing. Seems
the internals have dissolved and are waiting to poop themselves down the
exhaust.

It seems the standard bugs are beginning to show themselves.

At least I got the idiots at the stealership to cancel the order for the lock
tumbler for the SL. I ordered that in March, and checked back a few weeks ago
with no satisfaction. The classic center was supposed to get this ordered.
Stealer orders it again three weeks ago. I was told they would investigate and
call me. No call, so I dropped by today and requested the order be cancelled.
Took a half hour to track down the story of this screw up. Germany has no
record of the transaction at all.

clock and records for an even trade. I looked at book values and they were
like $4k. Yikes!

I knew nothing about anything newer than a W140. I'm going to keep it that
way

The tranny socket is a $12 part at the dealer and takes all of about five
minutes to replace. I have one on my shelf for the R129 but haven't felt like
getting under it to check. Probably ought to do that

What is with these dealers that are worthless? I must really be spoiled, as my
dealer (MB of Tampa) is wonderful. They call me when my parts come in,
overnight stuff for me if I really need it in a hurry, sell to me at wholesale,
etc.

The w220 went for fresh shoes last week and the tire shop decided that all
upper and lower control arms needed to come out. Quoted about $2500 for the

did. He acknowledges that there is some wear, but nothing to worry about.
The job will want to get done, but to hold off until there is more going on.

He did find that the computer connection to the transmission is doing the
well known wicking of fluid. It is early, so there should be no damage. I
got a date two weeks out to handle that. The right side CAT is also failing.
Seems the internals have dissolved and are waiting to poop themselves down
 the exhaust.

It seems the standard bugs are beginning to show themselves.

At least I got the idiots at the stealership to cancel the order for the lock
tumbler for the SL. I ordered that in March, and checked back a few weeks
ago with no satisfaction. The classic center was supposed to get this
ordered. Stealer orders it again three weeks ago. I was told they would
investigate and call me. No call, so I dropped by today and requested the
order be cancelled. Took a half hour to track down the story of this screw
up. Germany has no record of the transaction at all.

[MBZ] When it rains it pours

2014-08-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was pretty pleased yesterday when I fixed the Jetta with a $0.98 part so you
can imagine how crushed I was today when I took a highway offramp and got a
cloud of smoke.

The coolant temp sensor lives in the upper radiator hose and is held in place
with a metal clip. The clip rusted and shattered, the temp sensor got spat out
along with much of the coolant. Fortunately there was a shop nearby, the guy
took a piece of wire and fabbed me a new clip and I picked up some water from a
convenience store but unfortunately I'd lost the seal (which looks like an
o-ring in the online picture) from the sensor so I couldn't get it to quit
leaking even with a piece of cloth tied tight around it. A nearby boneyard
provided a new clip but no seal.
Fortunately I limped it the 20 miles back home with only 3 gallons of water
lost. Traded the 190D with its balding tire to Angie and took the Ranger to
Syracuse. A new temp sensor with its clip and seal are on their way,
fortunately theres a TDI parts supplier right in MA so even the cheap shipping
is super quick.

Re: [MBZ] OT printers

Probably is a way to get it running again. Maybe isopropyl on a swab to clean
the heads. Given the cost to purchase new, it may be less expensive
