IIRC Bluray and OTA are both 25Mb/s so no difference. Last I knew Comcast cable
was 6Mb/s. Others are probably similar.

I prefer 720 personally but don't think it really matters. What I dislike is
high frame rates, once you exceed 30fps the video gets the dreaded soap opera
effect and looks dumb. Sadly there is nothing a normal person can do about it...

Another possibility that you should be able to find in the archives (if we
still have one) is that some have found corrosion/pitting in the groves
that the t-stats seats in when it opens-closes. No seal, and it's like the
t-stat isn't there. I don't remember which engine was experiencing this.

coolant is essentially being replaced with exhaust gas?
As Curt says the new tstat is high quality and works but it's not OE. Can
this really make such a difference? The water pump looks perfect, the
impeller blades exhibit no corrosion, it spins smoothly and there is no
play.
The vent line E should be checked. It appears to be a narrow exterior
steel line. I should see if this can be checked for patency.

It's TV. While you might see a difference under perfect conditions,
my feeling is that nearly all content is of low enough resolution for
a variety of reasons that from normal viewing distance (10 ft and up)
differences are quite minor.

There is more quality difference between plasma and LCD technology,
with the nod going to plasma for color, brightness, and contrast, but
don't expect to be able to buy a plasma anymore.

If you are replacing a set more than six or seven years old, they are
all much better now anyway. I went from a mediocre Sony CRT to a 40
plasma back when everything went digital, and am quite pleased. More
trouble now that I have a metal roof on the house as the attic antenna
isn't very useful anymore, and I've not gotten the amplified one up
there yet to see if I have to put it out doors (which is gonna cost a
couple hundred dollars).

[MBZ] OT - Another Sondy Tale - THE HAIR SALON

2014-11-29 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Yep, another silly Sondy Tale already:

THE HAIR SALON
By Wilton Strickland

While waiting for a base commander's staff meeting at Sondrestrom to
begin one morning, a couple of women sergeants (not under my command or
supervision) across the table from me were discussing the difficulty of
finding somebody to cut their hair. Both of them had short hair in a very
simple, pixie style a la Leslie Caron. I wondered to myself why they didn't
cut each other's hair. After listening for a few minutes to their
complaints about their hair being too long and having nobody to cut it,
I finally chimed in with, I can cut it.
They both turned quickly toward me and asked, What was that? What did
you say?
I repeated, I can do it; I can cut it. I have a pair of barber's
scissors. I used to cut my three children's hair - even trim my own
occasionally. My daughter's 21 now and the two boys are teenagers, but
years ago, I used to cut their hair. My daughter's hair is blonde and sort
of fine. Yours is dark and is probably a little coarser and a little
thicker, but I can do it - carefully and a little bit at a time, of course.
We can take it very slowly, not be too aggressive and stop whenever you
want.

They both said, Okay, lets do it. When and where?
I said, How 'bout Saturday morning at 1000 in your dormitory dayroom?
I'll take a shirt to drape over your shoulders.
A few minutes before the appointed time, one of 'em called me to ask if
she should wash her hair so as to cut it wet.
I told her, I've never cut any wet - probably better do it dry and
just a little at a time so we can monitor the progress.
I arrived at the dayroom to find only one of 'em there, the other
having decided to wait to see how the first one turned out. I draped the
shirt over her shoulders and, using a comb and scissors, proceeded to cut
very carefully until both of us were pleased with it. Luckily, there was a
large mirror on one wall, and she used a hand-held mirror and the wall
mirror to follow the progress. A bar stool made the hair salon nearly
ideal.
That evening, the other sergeant called me and expressed her approval
of the job I had done on the first one and asked if and when I could cut
hers.

How 'bout tomorrow afternoon at 2 in your dayroom? I replied.
I did the second one, and a few days later, a third young enlisted
woman asked me to cut her hair, also. During the next several months, I cut
two of them a second time.
By the way, for those who are wondering, I expected and received
nothing in return, other than a few verbal thank yous, and there was
nothing else going on between the women and me.

Re: [MBZ] Yoots was Re: Dwight and Curt's former 240D

2014-11-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
What he said.

There are some things we have done our best to ingrain into both of our boys:

You and only you are responsible for yourself, your actions, and how people
perceive you. If you are honest, work hard, and treat others with respect no
matter how you are treated, you will succeed. Success is measured by you and
only you based on your personal goals and values. Personal integrity is the
only thing you can really control, but it must be earned through your actions.
No one can take it away from you, but you are the only one who can give it
value.

No matter how difficult life becomes, there is one thing you will always have -
family. It is incumbent on you to care for, trust, respect and protect your
family. They are the foundation on which you as a person and your personality
are built on, and how you conduct yourself reflects directly back on every
member.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, whenever our boys challenged or
questioned our values relative to others or society in general, we always told
them that it is because we have high(er) standards. We backed that up through
our actions and examples. Now that both are adults they have told us how much
they appreciate the way we raised them. They still deal with the trials and
tribulations of young adults, but they need those experiences to build their
own characters - there are some things you can’t teach or set examples for.

You have to lead by example….

Dan

about their hair being too long and having nobody to cut it, I finally
chimed in with, I can cut it.
They both turned quickly toward me and asked, What was that? What did
 you say?
I repeated, I can do it; I can cut it. I have a pair of barber's
scissors. I used to cut my three children's hair - even trim my own
occasionally. My daughter's 21 now and the two boys are teenagers, but years
ago, I used to cut their hair. My daughter's hair is blonde and sort of
fine. Yours is dark and is probably a little coarser and a little thicker,
but I can do it - carefully and a little bit at a time, of course. We can
take it very slowly, not be too aggressive and stop whenever you want.
I told her, I've never cut any wet - probably better do it dry and just a
little at a time so we can monitor the progress.
I arrived at the dayroom to find only one of 'em there, the other having
decided to wait to see how the first one turned out. I draped the shirt over
her shoulders and, using a comb and scissors, proceeded to cut very carefully
until both of us were pleased with it. Luckily, there was a large mirror on
one wall, and she used a hand-held mirror and the wall mirror to follow the
progress. A bar stool made the hair salon nearly ideal.
That evening, the other sergeant called me and expressed her approval of
the job I had done on the first one and asked if and when I could cut hers.
How 'bout tomorrow afternoon at 2 in your dayroom? I replied.
I did the second one, and a few days later, a third young enlisted woman
asked me to cut her hair, also. During the next several months, I cut two of
 them a second time.
By the way, for those who are wondering, I expected and received nothing
in return, other than a few verbal thank yous, and there was nothing else
going on between the women and me.

Re: [MBZ] TV options

2014-11-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We bought a 60” plasma three years ago this week and we’re very pleased. The
one reason we wanted a plasma was because of viewing angles. The TV is on a
wall on the long dimension of a room, so it needs to be able to be seen across
a wide space.

The one thing I don’t like about it is the reflective screen. Poorly placed
lighting can really make it difficult to see due to reflections. Placement of
such in the room is critical.

There is more quality difference between plasma and LCD technology, with the
nod going to plasma for color, brightness, and contrast, but don't expect to
be able to buy a plasma anymore.

If you are replacing a set more than six or seven years old, they are all
much better now anyway. I went from a mediocre Sony CRT to a 40 plasma back
when everything went digital, and am quite pleased. More trouble now that I
have a metal roof on the house as the attic antenna isn't very useful
anymore, and I've not gotten the amplified one up there yet to see if I have
to put it out doors (which is gonna cost a couple hundred dollars).

You and only you are responsible for yourself, your actions, and how

respect no matter how you are treated, you will succeed. Success is
measured by you and only you based on your personal goals and values.
Personal integrity is the only thing you can really control, but it must be
earned through your actions. No one can take it away from you, but you are
the only one who can give it value.

No matter how difficult life becomes, there is one thing you will always
have - family. It is incumbent on you to care for, trust, respect and
protect your family. They are the foundation on which you as a person and
your personality are built on, and how you conduct yourself reflects
 directly back on every member.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, whenever our boys challenged or
questioned our values relative to others or society in general, we always
told them that it is because we have high(er) standards. We backed that up
through our actions and examples. Now that both are adults they have told
us how much they appreciate the way we raised them. They still deal with
the trials and tribulations of young adults, but they need those
experiences to build their own characters - there are some things you can’t
 teach or set examples for.

You have to lead by example….

Re: [MBZ] TV options

2014-11-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
You can really tell the difference.

Bigger TV will look like crap at 720p, so go 1080p and make sure it has high
refresh. The 720p on a smaller TV is not really bad, as long as you are
watching it from a fair distance. Up close they are blocky and less nice to
watch.

To the subject, Roku is wonderful. I own four (two are loaned out). It
has more supported content than Apple TV, a thoughtful interface, and is
pretty easy to set up. Remote on the higher models is Bluetooth, but there
is also an IR receiver for universals. I have both Netflix and Amazon
Prime, so no dearth of content.

The LT is $30 this weekend, if I recall correctly, but I'm not shopping so
I don't know if it has analog out. The bigger models do, I paid $40 for my
refurbished Roku 2 but they are usually $60ish. The oldest one I have (now
on loan) ran every day for a couple of years.

If you need local news or sports, you can dig up a new HDHomeRun device to
do ATSC to the network. I don't have one, and haven't priced them
recently. There is probably some way to do the same with Plex and a tuner
card in your computer. Plex is good for local media streaming if you have
a big library on the computer.

I have a separate DVD and VHS player. When I bought the new TV, I
calculated how much time the kids were watching TV and figured up the power
utilization delta over a couple years, and added that to my TV budget. :)

 Best,

But a thermostat can and does often come and go. Why not replace the
thermostat first, or put a .45 shell in in as Jim suggests? That is
the easiest, fastest and cheapest test, and the cheapest fix.

A new thermostat (curt installed) does not equal a working thermostat.

It's my understanding that they went away then came back, then Curt
re-torqued bolts, then went away for awhile then came back. He then
gave up on car and towed it to me 1.5 years later. Without doing
anything to it, I drove it around town and local highway for a good
five days and the car performed flawlessly until three days ago. So
yes it's come and go problem. I can't see how a head issue could
come and go. Again boggling!
