Many moons ago I worked with this woman, a sales babe (she subscribed to
this description and flaunted it, and totally was) was going on one
evening at dinner about how she and her husband took showers together but
one was always cold because both couldn't be under the shower together.

So I was flying back home a coupla days later from wherever this
conversation took place, and saw a double shower head thing in that
catalog, one shower head was on this long bending arm that could stick out
and over the tub or whatever, and the other was where the normal shower
head was. So I ripped out that page and sent it to her. She was totally
crazy over it, and bought one. At some time later when I saw her again
somewhere, I got a FULL report on it. She loved it, and apparently so did
her husband. Like they both really loved it. A lot.

Re: [MBZ] '85TD interior fan odd behavior update

2015-03-12 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Try getting a used fan and swap it out. (Car-part.com Should be $25
or less) Could be a bad porcupine also. Max can tell you about
testing the porcupine. Basically, power and ground in, modulated
power out. should be full power on defrost.

What about the tube and sampling fan? is that in good condition? If
the computer thinks it is warm enough, you get no fan, no heat.

I am leaning more toward the porcupine or the sampling tube/fan.

For anyone keeping track, I changed out the PBU with a spare I have
and the same thing occurs where the interior fan does not come on
when the Hi-speed fan and middle (lower) PBU button are depressed
after the car is started but the fan will start when the defrost
button is depressed, so it looks like I've gotta' look into the
connection(s) to the fan itself.

Re: [MBZ] another oddball experience with W123 heat

2015-03-12 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

The signal to the monovalve is 12V PWM, and a slow rate.
1 second on to several seconds off, for example. I have
a red LED mounted behind the defroster PB on the SEL, so
I can see when it's trying to heat versus not doing it.
I clearly have a monovalve problem there, but so far its
its inability to run well in cold weather, and its seat
heaters, means I haven't felt compelled to do anything
about it. In other words, it has worse problems that
need dealing with first.

If the temperature regulation is screwy, check the foam hose.
If it's shot the temperature the ACC will be regulating will
be the UNDER-dash temperature, not the OVER-dash temperature.

What do people think - is there a connection? If so, what's the theory
 behind this?

Absolutely! If the coolant level is too low, it will not circulate into
the heater. No warm coolant = no heat! Low levels with some splashing in
 some times = intermittent heat.

The engine will run normally even when the coolant is too low to circulate
 in the heater.

Before testing anything else, fill the radiator!

Check the coolant regularly, and certainly before any long trip!

[MBZ] another oddball experience with W123 heat - update

2015-03-12 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
Guys,
I changed the new mono valve insert, which I had obtained from the PartsGeek,
back to the one I had in there previously where one could not regulate the
temperature via the PBU thumbwheel . . . it would be max heat at the MAX
position or almost no heat at any other temp setting. The old mono valve now
back in place now, get this, I've got regulateable heat via the PBU thumbwheel
now where the new mono valve insert didn't provide any heat at any PBU setting
. . . go figure; I'm thankful for miracles no matter in what form they appear.
I'm gonna' try sending back the new mono valve inserts to the PartsGeek. I'll
bet they're Chinese junk as there are no markings and the diameter of the mono
valve (silver) shaft is rather large which causes quite a tight fit.
Also, in reference to the multi-purpose (turn signal) stalk which I was having
trouble with in my '84 300D and replaced with one obtained on Ebay where the
seller indicated that it was a working stalk, I just got done measuring
continuities of the 14 pin connector in all stalk positions of my original
stalk and, since I cannot get the lo-beam headlight position to lose continuity
when gently wiggling the stalk as it had been doing when it was in the car
previously (Note: I've since done a quite a thorough cleaning , etc. of the
original stalk while out of the car using acetone and DeOxit . . . maybe that's
the reason it seems to be working OK? I'll reinstall it in the car to see what
happens and try to return the Ebay obtained stalk to the seller, though he has
not responded yet but I'll follow the Ebay rules and wait 3 days before
contacting Ebay.

Re: [MBZ] another oddball experience with W123 heat

2015-03-12 Thread Jon Agne via Mercedes
If the monovalve is OK, and it passes the diagnostic test, then it’s probably
one to both of these two things: 1. Your temp sensor is bad (under that little
grill on the dash, the grill is actually part of it) and/or 2. the tube that
supplies the suction to carry the air past the sensor has deteriorated.

I had the same symptoms, and when I replaced the sensor and the tube, my system
started working perfectly again. Be careful with the sensor as it is delicate.
The tube can be bought at Lowe’s or home Depot: it’s small diameter pipe
insulation. Just cut it to length and tape the slit on the side.

heat will gradually disappear within a couple minutes and I have to keep
switching to MAX, etc. Since I've inspected the neoprene seals of the mono

any very small holes, I recently purchased new mono valve inserts and
installed a new one in the 300D and drove it this evening and had no heat no

[MBZ] Too Much Heat

2015-03-12 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Took my 85 300D to work this morning and I was unable to control the heat output unless I kicked on the AC. Lots of heat and would not start cooling unless AC was full on. I tried all of the buttons to no avail.
Is this a PBU problem or monovalve problem?

Thaks,

Re: [MBZ] Should I look at this?

2015-03-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I've been looking for over a month. For some reason the market down here seems
to be slow, I'm not sure why.

I've got a nice 2001 E55 on the hook, but it's all the way across the country,
and I'm not keen about the $1000 it will take to ship it here. I would much
rather find something closer to home.

I'm under some pressure as the wife's Mazda 6 is getting a bit long in the
tooth and I really don't want to put any more money into the car if I can avoid
it.

Something will turn up. It's just a matter of time... I've got a couple of
S320's I'm going to check out this weekend.

readily available when you don't need one or can't afford it, but when you
are ready to buy, the supply dries up.

That is why I keep spare cars. When I need one, I can't find one. So I buy
spares when they pop up... up to a point... 5 right now... (too many)

 Relax and drive your SL.

Re: [MBZ] Too Much Heat

Could it be the cold engine switch that prevents the heat from running until
the engine heats?

 Subject: [MBZ] Too Much Heat

Took my 85 300D to work this morning and I was unable to control the heat
output unless I kicked on the AC. Lots of heat and would not start cooling
unless AC was full on. I tried all of the buttons to no avail.
Is this a PBU problem or monovalve problem?
 Thaks,
 Mike

Re: [MBZ] another oddball experience with W123 heat

2015-03-12 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

AFAIK When you switch to max you are stopping all current flowing to the valve.
If the heat stops after you switch to any setting other than max, it sounds
like the coil might be shorted out. I would check the voltage across the leads
going to the valve while someone moves the control back and forth from heat to
no heat. You should get a variable voltage reading from zero to 12v or
something less. If not, then the whole valve may need to be replaced.

Since it is sometimes difficult to access bare wires or terminals I have a set
of test leads for a voltmeter on which I have soldered needles. If it's
difficult to get to bare terminals, I shove the needles through the wires and
get a reading that way. Then I put a dab of liquid rubber on the holes where I
stuck the needles and wrap a piece of self-stick rubber tape around them.

Gerry

.what actually happens for
example when a temperature is chosen via the thumbwheel on the PBU
say just below the MAX (note: click stop setting), the heat will
gradually disappear within a couple minutes and I have to keep
 switching to MAX, etc..
