[MBZ] New Radio for my MB (no swimming fish)

2016-02-05 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I ordered one of these today:

http://www.continental-automotive.com/www/automotive_de_en/themes/commercial_vehicles/ch_interior_en/audio_products/fm_am_radio_bluetooth_en.html

Looks like a nice "modern" replacement for our beloved Beckers, but at a
far more reasonable price and with bluetooth, front USB input, front AUX
input.

I love the fact that the design is simple and similar to the Beckers (matte
black finish, yellow LCD display). One button/knob to turn it on/off and
control the volume, six preset stations buttons.

KISS - it works for a reason!

Re: [MBZ] New Radio for my MB (no swimming fish)

2016-02-05 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I find it curious this radio is marketed to truck drivers, don't know if that
bodes well for performance but it makes sense from an ease of operation stand
point.

I could not find any review info either, other than a couple of posts on
Porsche forums, and they seemed to like it for the reasons I'm getting it.

Will let you all know. If my phone pairs up to the Bluetooth and I can stream
podcasts and phone calls, I'll be thrilled.

That reminds me, I think I need to order a remote microphone

I have not used any Mac hardware newer than about 2004. But
prior to that, running System 7, OS8, OS9 and OSX I would
often seem them fix themselves.

And not just me. It was a sort of a legend among Mac users.
Maybe there is still a little bit of the magic left...

[MBZ] 2002 Honda Civic AC compressor.

2016-02-05 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
My son's Honda Civic's AC compressor developed a very loud drumming noise
today. Historically this vehicle has had loads of trouble with AC compressor.
The last time the AC failed I had my mechanic install 3 different NAPA store
compressors and none of them lasted more than a month each. This a trusted
certified mechanic. We finally bought a compressor directly from a Honda
dealership. This one has lasted almost 3 years and now is making this noise.
Does anyone have any experience with these compressors or can anyone recommend
a supplier to purchase a new high quality compressor from.
Thanks,
Mike

[MBZ] BBA Reman

2016-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just got an email from BBA about my convertible top controller coming back to
me today.

I called to see exactly what they had done to it. They reprogrammed the EEPROM
and calibrated the roll bar circuits. All should be working 100% now.

Looking forward to getting it back early next week and having the SL500 full
operational.

Yes.

The HHT (hand held tester) emulation in the DAS system has the ability to
“fool” the controller into thinking the car has been tipped beyond 7 degrees in
any plane. I’ll run the tests when I get it installed. If she hits a bump or
gets rowdy while driving it can deploy as well.

It will happen, believe me. It borders on violent when the roll bar deploys.
There will be laundry to do afterwards as well.

I second that. I used Thunderbird for quite a while but finally got tired of it
dumping megabytes of ??? on the OS every time I removed them with Ccleaner.
Some of the stuff Thunderbird and Microsoft continually dumped on the OS would
slow down the computer and cause weird problems.

Re: [MBZ] Shipping parts

2016-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The only thing I've found wonky about FedEx is that once the collective size of
the package goes above a certain length the cost goes up significantly.

I found this out when I was parting the S500. Some of the flat big stuff like
door cards were really expensive.

I like FedEx Ground because it's the least expensive and you still get tracking
and relatively cheap insurance.

Caraudio24.de, shipped to a friend in Germany who will then ship it to me. I

Even $150 would be a great price for this radio, I think. Won't really know

I remember all the cautions in the 124 manual for convertibles, sounded like
jacking up a rear wheel with the key in the ignition might cause the roll bar

Re: [MBZ] BBA Reman

2016-02-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m working from memory, I think it was 7 degrees. That’s coupled with input
from the accelerometer, too.

If the roll bar deploys, you use the manual operation rocker switch to lower
and raise it again, and that should reset the system. There is a very, very
powerful set of springs inside the hydraulic cylinder that release if this
occurs, deploying the roll bar in milliseconds.

I'm unaware of any great problems with that compressor in the 1995-2000 Chrysler

I'm no expert on the subject, but if it were me, I'd drop a couple hundred on a
new Nissens or Denso, flush the system as best as I could, replace the filter
dryer, and install a suction line filter.

[MBZ] OT, Death by Stupidity

2016-02-05 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

There is this, a strong argument for Darwinism:

Deputies: Lancaster man died playing Russian roulette with revolver

Authorities said a man found dead shot himself while playing Russian
roulette

Deputies ruled the death accidental

Lancaster County authorities released this photo of Brandon Wheeler
Reese’s truck. RockHill

Lancaster County authorities believe the man found dead last month in
his truck was not killed in a homicide, but died accidentally playing
Russian roulette.

On Jan. 12, deputies were called to the intersection of John Everall
Road and Sunnybrook Lane where they found Brandon Wheeler Reese, 22, of
Lancaster, shot dead inside his truck
.
Lakendrick Wade

Deputies and the State Law Enforcement Division collected evidence,
gathered leads and began a homicide investigation.

Friday morning, the sheriff’s office released new details after
determining his death was accidental.

Deputies spoke with Lakendrick Tayon Wade, 20, of Lancaster, who was
determined to have been one of three people with Mr. Reese when he was
shot.

According to Wade, Reese came to his home on McIlwain Road wanting to
obtain a gun. Reese drove Wade and another person to Palidin Trailer
Park to the home of the fourth person to obtain the weapon, the
sheriff’s office reports.

The owner of the revolver stood outside the open front passenger door of
the truck and handed Reese an S .38 special revolver. He told Reese
that if he successfully played Russian roulette with the revolver, he
could take it, a release states.

Reese spun the cylinder once and pulled the trigger with the revolver
pointed toward the floorboard of the truck. It did not fire. Reese then
pointed the revolver at the right side of his head and pulled the
trigger again. The revolver fired, killing Reese at Palidin Trailer
Park, according to the release.

“The owner of the revolver retrieved it and left the scene. Wade and the
third person in the truck moved Mr. Reese to the front passenger
floorboard of his truck, and Wade drove Mr. Reese to Springs Memorial
Hospital,” the release states. “Wade became fearful when he arrived at
the hospital and did not stop.”

Wade then drove the truck to the location it was discovered on John
Everall Road, and he and the third person left walking.

The owner of the revolver assisted investigators in recovering the gun,
which was determined by a firearms examiner at SLED to be the firearm
which fired the fatal bullet.

Wade was also questioned by investigators about a shooting incident that
occurred at 605 East Marion Street, Kershaw, on Jan. 3 and was charged
with attempted murder in that case.

Sheriff Barry Faile extended sympathy to Reese’s family and friends.

I thought hydraulic cylinders had hydraulic fluid in them ...

Ala the Apple III Repair Manual: Did you pick the Mac up from a height of
about 5 inches and drop it soundly on the table to reseat the chips?

In many older computers all the chips were socketed. They eventually
figured out that this was a reliability nightmare unless one used
sockets that cost near as much as the chips in them, and then
sockets went away. Except for sometimes the CPU itself, and maybe
the RAM devices, once SIMM came along.

But sometimes a good thump does plenty of good.

That was one of the beauties of the Amiga computers. You could swap
out a lot of of the chips for various upgrades. (another was that
you could run the Mac OS on them)

But the standard was for the stealer to hold the box waist high and
drop it to "seat the chips" before unpacking.
