By semi-trailer truck. SWMBO got behind one, now the front of the '95 sedan is
very pitted. She did get the license plate number, we'll call the authorities
tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath. I only have liability insurance, so
we need to make the other party pay, if possible.

Tried tonight, failed. Looks like the starter has failed. Big click,
battery cables get very warm so current is flowing, but the motor she
ain't turnin'.

I turned the engine over by hand just fine, so the motor isn't seized.

Tried tapping on the starter a bit with my breaker bar, no change. Ran
the gear shift up and down while holding the key in the crank position,
the neutral safety switch is operating correctly.

Any other ideas?

I didn't hate it. The Sante Fe had an adjustable
lumbar support, which made it WAY more pleasant
to drive for 14 hours.
Both cars were "twitchy", meaning they have fast steering ratios.
The Jeep had superior electronics, streaming bluetooth
in that car was very easy and worked exceptionally well.
The Hyundai was a little buggy, in that regard.

Thanks. He went to the local Carmax and looked at a variety of SUVs.
He
rated them all on a list (how organized is that?) and liked the Hunda
CRV
the best, but also liked the Nissan Pathfinder which is a bit larger
and a

bit more $$. I was suggesting the Nissan, just for the larger mass and
safety. I saw a CRV yesterday morning, never paid much attention to
them,

it was nice but looked small. He looked at the hundays too, was not
totally impressed compared to the others. I recall renting one some
years

ago, thought it was OK too. He also liked some Fords, interesting.

I'm going to look at some of them around here, try to find a suthrun
car
(a lot of them seem to be from NY for some reason, leases or rentals)
to
avoid the road salt issue. He will get his financing organized so we
can

pull the trigger when I find something, he can come here and get it.

Thoughts?
I recently rented a Jeep Compass, and a Hyundai Santa Fe.

The Jeep was uncomfortable on a long trip.

The Hyundai was an exceptionally good appliance.
Quite comfortable. Great fuel mileage. I would
recommend it, if one is looking for a smaller SUV

Re: [MBZ] template for Grant's popos to follow

2016-06-10 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
Today I was driving on I-95 in SC and NC and there were 3 or 4 incidents
where I am tooling along in the left lane at 75, passing a truck or
something, and some car comes up VERY fast behind me and gets right on
my bumper until I complete my pass and move over. Also a couple where I
have moved left to pass, one comes up fast behind me, switches to the
right lane and passes me then cuts right () in front of me to pass
the other vehicle too, speeds of 75-80. That scared me more than the
idiot riding my bumper as one small swipe on my RF fender would send us
both cartwheeling and likely kill us and whoever else happens to be in
the vicinity. I had the cam running, I should probably download the
trip just to have that to review. That was some scary times.

Both of the pass/cuts were Florida pickups, the bumper riders were a mix
but had one attribute in common that I shall not mention.

Perhaps the force of impact caused the starter brush's to unseat, or the
brush holders to move enough to ground out. If that were the case,
energizing the starter would go directly to ground, make the cables hot
[quickly] and fail to rotate the starter..

Remove starter and open it to check brush status.. could be where the issue
lays..

Just a thought..

Both cars were "twitchy", meaning they have fast steering ratios.
The Jeep had superior electronics, streaming bluetooth

it was nice but looked small. He looked at the hundays too, was not
totally impressed compared to the others. I recall renting one some years

I'm going to look at some of them around here, try to find a suthrun car

avoid the road salt issue. He will get his financing organized so we can
pull the trigger when I find something, he can come here and get it.

Re: [MBZ] fuel prices?

2016-06-10 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
I got 87 at $2.03 or $2.09 in Freedom dollars per Freedom Unit at a
Flying J just before South of the Border (Pedro No Shoots Ze Bool!) this
afternoon. I forgot to see what dizzel was but it is a bit higher after
being the same as benzin (which was lower) for awhile. But they have
gone up.

SC has next to nothing gas tax, just across the border in the NC nanny
state it is 20cents higher so I always fill up just before the border
and it is enough to get me around the nanny state then back to civilization.

Our prices have gone up substantially in the past month or so.

We were paying low $0.90's and now it is $1.189 per liter.

[MBZ] Starting Wilton's wrecked 124 300D

2016-06-10 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Tried tonight, failed. Looks like the starter has failed. Big click, battery
cables get very warm so current is flowing, but the motor she ain't turnin'.

I turned the engine over by hand just fine, so the motor isn't seized.

Tried tapping on the starter a bit with my breaker bar, no change. Ran the
gear shift up and down while holding the key in the crank position, the neutral
safety switch is operating correctly.

Any other ideas?

My "incident" could have gone so much more badly, so quickly, had there
been oncoming traffic as I was driven across that lane.. It's humbling to
say the least.

Met with a law firm today that will be representing me, just to make sure
all the details are properly covered. It now appears the other driver has
been charged, the police report has not yet been released, which likely
translates to a possible criminal charge, since those kinds of reports take
longer, have to be reviewed by the County Prosecutors office.. etc etc..

To date, the response I've gotten from legal staff upon viewing the dash
cam video has been incredibly positive. The suggestion was made [Monday
Quarterback] that to really ice the cake, I could have swiveled the camera
around to my face and narrated the time, date, and pertinent details of the
incident. Then panned the crash scene, and the other car..

After thought.. Hope I never use that newly learned "skill" and there is no
"next time"..

I'm truly sorry for the individuals who were killed and injured in the
incident.. senseless ..

Re: [MBZ] Front left ball joint - install

2016-06-10 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Michael: Do you plan to do this yourself, to hire someone to do it, or a
hybrid where you pay someone just to remove and press in the new ball
joints?

I did this job myself on a 126 a few years ago (both sides). The w123 front
end is almost identical except where the guide (brake) rods met the chassis.
The job requires at least two types of spreaders to pop the tapered ball
joint and tie rod shafts out of the knuckle (without damaging the boots).
As mentioned, you can beat the old ball joint out of the knuckle with a
largish (4+ lb) hammer with the knuckle held firmly in a vice. But you DO
need a special tool to press the new BJ into the knuckle. The official MBZ
tool for this is $300+. There is another type of tool that's about $100
that will do the job using a large (like 10-20 ton) press. That's why many
folks take the knuckle to a pro to press in the new parts.

Disassembly to remove the knuckle took under an hour the second time but it
took a lot longer the first time when everything was tight and slightly
corroded. This also requires removing the wheel, Brake caliper, and brake
disk; so have new axle grease and grease seals on hand.

Some claim you can press in the new ball joint with a conventional "c-clamp"
ball joint tool by first removing the rubber boot and using the tool "upside
down". Some say you can remove the old ball joint from the knuckle with all
the other parts still attached. I am skeptical of both claims.

Meanwhile, a serial rapist walks free, delivering "speeches" so
memorable nobody records them, and rakes in millions for selling state
secrets, with his dear wifey, hands out millions of taxpayer dollars, of
which about 30% are paid to him, and outside of a couple guys on the

Double standard? Hypocrites? why the disparity?

Note that you MUST use approved oil in VW diesels, especially those
with unit injectors, as they have flat tappets. If you don't, the cam
lobes wear, greatly reducing power.

I suspect they are high ZDDP oils.

This has been an issue with the performance crowd for a while, some
older american iron will eat a cam in a few thousand miles without the
zinc.

Millenials also spit out what they have been taught but they need to

Millenials need to be apprenticed to leadership media positions.
Dump the old broads on tv and radio.

does the jack actually work to break a bead? I watched a London
Barrister break down a tyre and change it pretty much bare handed in
1968. It was probably a 13" tyre and it was a radial, but having helped
to break down truck and tractor tires, I was impressed that a guy in a
suit could change a tyre over there.

I have successfully broken down tires on steel wheel with a 2x12 and the
tractor. Lay the 2x on the tire and back over it with the tractor rear
tire.

Local State Research University has found a marked increase in students seeking
STEM degrees to the point that humanities A & S Dean is worried that some
programs will suffer. Most of the degree seekers are asian, while the pale
people are after the touchy feely diploma. Asians are paying out of state fees
in the mid five figure ranges while the white kids are low five figure and most
likely to be pulling espresso drinks after waltzing past the podium.

Flimsy. Bends easily. _Slightly_ better than having no

May be different quality items of similar design out there.
I have never thought of the one I have as flimsy and it has not bent but
it was not from HF - just looks similar to the HF model.
There is also a heavier duty model available that will do larger tires.
Not sure if it will do smaller tires like utility trailer etc.

Re: [MBZ] Leak at rim / tire joint

After what G.Mann said about it versus Northern Tool, I'm going to look at the
NT one first.
Sounds like you might be able to use a manual bead-breaker along with the HF
machine. I had one years ago which worked well on the old bias ply tires. Not
sure how well it would work on the current tires however. This is what mine was
like:

https://1stwebsales.com/portable-tire-changer-changing-machine-car-truck-motorcycle-manual-bead-breaker.html?utm_source=bing_medium=cpc_campaign=Shopping%2520Ads(BSC)_term=1101700102899_content=All%2520Products

After breaking both beads, we would take two tire irons and remove the tire
from the rim, Then use a rubber mallet to mount the new tire.

Dissel went form 1.39 to 2.39-245 over the past 5-6 months.

Crude went from 26 to 40ish, so some price changes are to be expected.
However, as usual, when the crude closes, up, the price of fuel at the
pump jumps immediately. when crude closes down, nothing happens until
long after the lower priced fuel has been delivered to the pumps. We
saw jumps up of 20-30¢ at a time. it goes down a couple pennies at a time.

Right now, about 2.25 for both E10 benzin and Dissel.

Y'all in Canada are always getting ripped. Y'all have all that oil
shale, but don't seem to see benefits at the pump.

Well, a Mercedes Benz IS still a Mercedes Benz. even if it IS 30, 40,
or 50 years old. BTW, my 200D turned 50 last fall. The 240Ds are
"only" 35 and 36. A well maintained Mercedes will always turn heads to
some extent. Even the rustbucket SDL (Al Capone) gets some respect.
Especially when I mention half a million miles.

A 230SL would be over 50. a 250SL is ~50 and a 280 SL (113) is
approaching 50. the 107 design is approaching 50 also.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Burned burners

2016-06-10 Thread MG via Mercedes

My daughter got that once from her ex boyfriend's mother.
I had given her the 81 300SD and the first time she drove it over
to his parent's house was the first time his mother ever came out
to meet her, exclaiming all the while about her nice Mercedes.
The lady got pop-eyed when she found out I had just given it to
my daughter and just about fell over when my daughter modestly
mentioned that it didn't mean much to me since I had 4 others.

I understand that she bugged her husband for quite some time
after that to get her a Mercedes also. I have had a lots of
laughs over that one ever since.

Agreed.
I only got the "high falutin Mercedes owner" thing once. Friends of my parents happened
to come over while we were visiting and were very impressed with my '83 240D. I pointed out it had
a quarter million miles, peeling clearcoat, significant rust and an unsettling tendency to eat
alternators to which he replied "but its a Mercedes!"

i noticed that about the pathfinder too. I am sure that sends a lot of
them into the ditches. You don't want twitchy steering driving on ice
or snow. I'll take a 110 or 111 for that. with the right tars, they
are rock solid.

there are reasons why every time a little snow falls, the ditches are
filled with "SUV"s and a high number are upside down, on the side or
completely rolled over. Operator error for sure, but twitchy steering
is certainly a contributing factor, along with tars, and design (short
wheelbase, high center of gravity and twitchy steering)

I didn't hate it. The Sante Fe had an adjustable
lumbar support, which made it WAY more pleasant

Both cars were "twitchy", meaning they have fast steering ratios.
The Jeep had superior electronics, streaming bluetooth
in that car was very easy and worked exceptionally well.
The Hyundai was a little buggy, in that regard.

Thanks. He went to the local Carmax and looked at a variety of SUVs.
He rated them all on a list (how organized is that?) and liked the
Hunda CRV the best, but also liked the Nissan Pathfinder which is a
bit larger and a bit more $$. I was suggesting the Nissan, just for
the larger mass and safety. I saw a CRV yesterday morning, never paid
much attention to them, it was nice but looked small. He looked at
the hundays too, was not totally impressed compared to the others. I
recall renting one some years ago, thought it was OK too. He also
liked some Fords, interesting.

I'm going to look at some of them around here, try to find a suthrun
car (a lot of them seem to be from NY for some reason, leases or
rentals) to avoid the road salt issue. He will get his financing
organized so we can pull the trigger when I find something, he can
come here and get it.

want to deal with a stealer or CL. Could maybe get an extended

and hyundais look all to be ex-rentals ("fleet"). Any thoughts on
getting an ex-rental with 15-20k-ish miles? 2013-2015 so a year or 3
old with reasonable miles. He kinda liked a RAV4 but they only had
2WD models, the others I looked at are 4WD.

The basic issue is he does not want to deal with a car except to drive
it, I'm thinking the asian stuff is fairly reliable, relatively, and
the prices are in the $20k-$23k range which is doable.

Thoughts? BTW he has my dad's old 98 Caddy DeVille that is running
fine but the electronic instrument cluster has gone mostly inop. He
got another one off ebay which works but it has to be flashed to match
the car's computer or something, and that costs like $800-$900 by the
time it is pulled, flashed, organized somehow, then reinstalled. He
can't get it inspected in nannyland without doing that, I can't see
putting that kind of $$ into an 18yo car, I could probably sell it

the difference between first gen CRV and the current one is staggering.
FIrst gen was a japanese mini SUV. (or was that micro?) current ones
are what I'd call full size.

Same with the toada RAV. (its direct competitor) The current on is the
same hight and width as dogde Grand Caravan, and only 5-6" shorter. It
is no where near as usable. For all that mass, I'd buy the GC in a
heartbeat!

Current pathfinder is huge. pretty close to full size pickup based SUV
thing. Original was based on datsun (mini) pickup.

Yes.

Most "modern" engines are now roller tappet, meaning the
friction face of the tappet is, in fact a rolling cylinder, on bearings
or bushings. In a flat tappet engine, the only protection the
hardened face of the camshaft has is the oil film.

We drove a Nissan Xterra when we were shopping 2 years ago, I liked it a lot
but ended up figuring the utility of a pickup was worth it. The Xterra has real
offroad cred too.
A friend had a second gen Kia Sportage that was quite a nice car.
I'm surprised Rick hated the Compass, I had one as a rental once (might have
been a Patriot, same car) and thought it was a pretty good car. It was just a
car though...
Honestly very few people really need an SUV, with all the airbags and side
impact protection etc, even a cheap hootpy is pretty safe these days. Gone are
the days of cars that just fold up and kill the occupants in an accident. The
cars still fold up but the point is to absorb the impact in the car rather than
the passengers.

The CVT is just a snowmobile transmission, I had a Nissan Juke with one and it
drove just like a snowmobile. I looked it up, belt drive...
I suspect the belt would be the limiting factor and a lot of stop and go

Re: [MBZ] Leak at rim / tire joint

2016-06-10 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Craig,

They are one of the few places that I regularly will take our cars for work
that I can't or don't want to do myself. Absolutely the best customer
service (honest, up-front with all the options, always offer choices to
save money, very few mistakes in 16 years).

However, I will not buy new tires locally until the price difference vs.
online goes down. I'll take them the tires for installation and for an
alignment, but they'll only get that part of the work. Their selection is
also rather limited.

Re: [MBZ] OT knead sum advise

2016-06-10 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
Thanks. He went to the local Carmax and looked at a variety of SUVs.
He rated them all on a list (how organized is that?) and liked the Hunda
CRV the best, but also liked the Nissan Pathfinder which is a bit larger
and a bit more $$. I was suggesting the Nissan, just for the larger
mass and safety. I saw a CRV yesterday morning, never paid much
attention to them, it was nice but looked small. He looked at the
hundays too, was not totally impressed compared to the others. I recall
renting one some years ago, thought it was OK too. He also liked some
Fords, interesting.

I'm going to look at some of them around here, try to find a suthrun car
(a lot of them seem to be from NY for some reason, leases or rentals) to
avoid the road salt issue. He will get his financing organized so we
can pull the trigger when I find something, he can come here and get it.

Yes.

Most "modern" engines are now roller tappet, meaning the
friction face of the tappet is, in fact a rolling cylinder, on bearings
or bushings. In a flat tappet engine, the only protection the
hardened face of the camshaft has is the oil film.

Re: [MBZ] Front left ball joint - install

2016-06-10 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I've not yet done ball joints on a 123. the shape is similar to a 126.
on the 126, you can whack the ball joint out with a MFH (2-4 lb hammer)
On the 126, you have to take off the caliper, the hub, the disk rotor,
and UCA to free the wheel carrier. then you put the carrier in a vise,
knock out the old ball joint and use the MB special tool to press in the
new one. Because it goes in at an angle, the MB special tool makes it
easy. If you can get the front end up high enough (like on a lift) you
can beat out the old BJ on the car. in that case, you could probably
use a BFH, (10 lb) but it is probably a 2 person operation. (one to hold
the drift pin or ball peen hammer.) On the 126, I was able to borrow
the special tool from Q, and that made the installation slick and easy.

When you have the carrier loose, it may be better/easier/cheaper than
buying or making a special tool to take it to a front end shop and let
them press in the new ball joints. I've done that for ball joints,
wheel bearings, the 124 LCA outer bushing etc.

Would OM60x engines be considered flat tappet?  the top of the surface the cam
rides on is flat.  On the OM 621, 616 and 617 there is a curved follower

Curt Raymond via Mercedes June 10, 2016 at 7:17 AM via Postbox Well
debated all across the interwebs, lots of reading there.
In short: ZDDP Zinc-dialkyl-dithiophosphate, has been reduced (not eliminated)
from most (not all) motor oils to keep it from clogging catalytic converters.
This started around (from memory) 2010 so oil before that should have higher
ZDDP levels.
The engines this most seems to affect are flat tappet cams where the ZDDP
creates a friction barrier. Most diesel oils have relatively high ZDDP levels
but AFAIK this shouldn't really have any effect on at least the 123 and later
cars anyway. If you're really worried about it Amsoil sells a whole line of high
ZDDP oil for performance engines.

It is my understanding that the EPA at some point  mandated that  a mixture of
zinc and phosphorus known as  ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate) be reduced
or  eliminated as an additive from  motor oils because it is damaging to
catalytic converters. I am interested in this issue because I have older cars
(1960 Olds 1991 Volvo) with the original gasoline engines, and I have a number
of older quarts of motor oil. I have a couple of questions about this:

1. Was zinc phased out of motor oil, and , if so, when was it eliminated?

2. Was it reduced/eliminated from diesel rated oil?

3. Is there a way to know from the writing on the can how much zinc it contains?

4. Is there a way to determine from markings on the can the age of a given can
of oil?

5. Does canned/bottled engine oil have a shelf life?

6. Should a container of older motor oil be shaken to mix the ingredients
before being poured?

7. Would cans of "STP" additive from the seventies and eighties contain zinc?

8. Is the "zinc" issue one I even  need to be concerned about?

9. Would an old (70's era) can of racing motor oil contain a greater amount of

On both the cars the mech used the proper MB press to slide in the new BJs. On
