Re: [MBZ] W123 Parts

2016-11-15 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
My 78 300TD came with a cast iron style check strap mechanism that
eventually broke (lose pieces in the door). I replaced them with a stamped
steel version (style with the big ball bearings) which were fine as long as
the lube lasted. Also, cleaning and fresh lube usually brought the stamped
style back to life even after they rusted.

Jim is probably right. Bur if even one good bulb is screwed in you should
read zero. The capacitive coupling voltage is normal with a high impedance
meter but it normally floats around: not constant.

Capacitive pickup.

You have a high input impedance meter which needs little current and a
capacitor formed by two parallel wires with insulation between them. The
AC voltage will charge the capacitor as it reverses polarity. This takes
current which, when flowing through the input impedance of your meter,
will show as a voltage.

[MBZ] refrigerant oil

2016-11-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Sort of a strange time of year for this sort of question but I am
getting ready to replace the ac compressor on my 92 300SD. The clutch
is making strange noises and has a lot of play in the pulley so I am
swapping it out. I thought I had a bad compressor around that I could
swap the clutch off of but it does not appear so. Anyway, I was getting
ready to order some oil and was going to buy a gallon PAG but then got
to thinking once the bottle is opened will it start drawing moisture?
If that is the case what about the little bottle that holds oil for
injection on my Robinair AC machine? Wouldn't it draw moisture too? If
a larger bottle that I would not use all of it would draw moisture on
the unused portion should I only buy 8oz bottles?

It appears most of our cars with R123 used PAG46. What about older cars
that are converted from R12 to R134? Should those use POE oil?

URO might be ok as long as you add moly lube really thick to the thing. Polei

pulled straps from PnP and lubed them up before putting them in. The factory

Inductive/capacitive coupling, probably. Voltage means nothing,

[MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-11-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got home from work, took care of some domestic stuff, starting the oil sucker
before I began.

Changed oil (Delo 400 LE 15W40) and installed a Mann oil filter. There was a
spare Mann filter with the car, but when I took it out of the box and inspected
it the bottom rolled edge of the metal part was rusted or corroded. No way I
was putting that into the engine, so my shelf spare went in. Always good to
have a spare!

Removed the air cleaner and found one of the buffers broken. The metal
cups/heat shields were all still there, which was nice to see. I used one of
my $6.00 M119 air cleaner buffers (MB part #1039880111, $6.00 list) that I
suspected were the same and it was. It’s possible they’re slight slightly
taller than the W123 part, but that would be the only difference. Someone had
already trimmed the inlet elbow edge off, so the sealing ring came out easy and
was still nice and pliable, so no need to replace it.

With the air cleaner out, I pulled the banjo bolt on the back of the intake out
and cleaned it. It was pretty clear with just a little bit of crud in it. This
car will stand up on it’s hind legs without hardly any effort so I’m sure the
line isn’t plugged, but I’ll check it this weekend when I have more time. I
also noticed the ALDA is still sealed.

O-ring on the air cleaner drain tube could stand to be replaced - it’s NLA, but
the oil dipstick O-ring is the same size and it’s still available. Another
item for the parts list to call in tomorrow.

Changed the two O-rings on the filter tube (thanks, Curley!) and got four
quarts in through the filter housing. Put the new Mann filter in and closed
things up. Got another two quarts into it to hit the mid point of the dipstick
and all was well.

Cleaned the battery terminals and ground cable. Put some protective goo on the
terminals.

Took it for a quick ride up to Advance Auto to pick up an online order for some
rust neutralizer I had sitting there. Ran great with no problems.

Some observations:

Vacuum levers on the throttle linkage on the top of the valve cover are nearly
worn away. I wonder if they’re still available?

Cigar hose is cracked right near where it connects to the filter housing. Not
leaking, but the hose is pretty hard. Another parts order item.

Would like to find one of the “flat” one piece breather tubes to replace the
awful conglomeration of tubes, rubber elbows, clamps, etc. that are in place
now. I remember well when MB came out with the one piece flat rubber tube -
it’s still in the EPC but doesn’t appear to be available any longer.

Spring for holding power steering filter in place is gone. Another item for
the morning’s parts order.

Just got a can of Diesel Purge tonight in UPS. I was going to do a purge and
fuel filters tomorrow, but with the cigar hose in questionable condition I may
wait until I have the new hose.

Rockers are faded. I’m wondering what color paint they were? They weren’t
black, more of a dark gray. Easy/cheap fix and makes it look much nicer.

Enough for the day. Time to play with Kitty and turn in.

[MBZ] OT home wiring / electricity strangeness

2016-11-15 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Ceiling light fixture, has three small 15 watt bulbs, two were "out" so I
decided it was time for new bulbs. Touching one of them caused it to light
up, indicating the base contacts are not contacting, so I decided to take
down the fixture and see if I could fix that.

Here's the strange part. I shut off the switch that controls that light
fixture, and double checked with my Fluke to make sure the power is really
off, but the meter shows 14 VAC between the hot and the ground!

What is the cause of this?

Re: [MBZ] W123 Parts

2016-11-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I took a quick look tonight, and the door check strap is still there, so I’m
guessing there’s a good possibility that all the related stuff is there as
well, but probably in the bottom of the door.

I just happen to have a spare W126 door check - I’ll compare when I remove this
one to see if they’re the same.

More on tonight’s work after I run a couple of errands.

The fronts are still available, but they're stupid money from the

I took one apart and cleaned/greased it; and maybe also repaired it years ago,
but I don't remember the details. I remember that they were tricky to take
apart and put back together.

Again, there is some speculation that the fronts may fit the rears. I just
ordered a URO from the Amazon to see.

I'm not sure Meyle is any better than URO these days. Much of their stuff comes

replace a 107 door check, on any of the five that I've owned.

2016-11-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Agreed.

I haven't checked to see if the old one is still in place - I don't think it
is, as the door swings freely. Not something I paid a lot of attention to at
the time.

I know they can be rebuilt, sort of. I think that's what Jim did, or maybe
Curly said something about it.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Parts

2016-11-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I've done some research and seen references to the front door check working on
the rear doors. However, there were also comments about the front door check
being longer possibly.

As much as I detest the idea, URO sells front door checks for $16.00 on Amazon.
As I get into this deeper I may throw caution to the wind and get one to see if
the theory checks out.

Being known as "Mr. Safety" around the house, it does have some value as I see
it, but it's so damned ugly, and it's not stock.

I'm not going to tear it out yet. It's not working, either.

In NYC in the winter time you see mountain bikes with screws protruding from

No headphone, but often a wool hat over ears to fend off frostbite.  Farmer
John knobby tires were all the rage on mountain bikes back then, I could get
through the snow pretty well, ice was another story.

A bicycle rider experiences wind noise and their own breathing noise that can
completely drown out any reasonably quiet vehicle.  In my college days I rode a
mountain bike all over the UW Madison Wisconsin campus, and I had to pay very
close attention to the buses with engines in the rear, they could overtake me
and I wouldn't get any audibles, only visuals.

Re: [MBZ] OT Can you hear my Pious now?

2016-11-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
On my bike, riding through a parking lot, one almost ran me over as I
was making a turn, it tried to go around me.

In a rotary on my bike, one tried to go around me on the outside when I
moved to go off the rotary onto another road it almost clipped me.

In both cases I was in the "right" (dead right maybe, but still right)
according to traffic law and common sense.

In both cases they were going rather slowly on battery, and made
absolutely no noticeable noise.

The gummint is going to require Pioi and other electron-powered vehicles

to make enough noise so you can hear it before it runs you over. Having
had close encounters of the second kind more than once I can relate.

Re: [MBZ] Before & After - Wash

2016-11-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I experienced that when I got the Jetta, to go from a 123 to a 201 to a 3rd gen
Jetta to the 4th gen Golf has been interesting. Each is a step up in comfort,
quiet and power. Of the 4 I like the 123 and the 3rd gen Jetta the best. Both
are a little rattly, fairly simple and easy to maintain.
I'm on the lookout for another 3rd gen Jetta or 4th gen Passat (which is the
same as a 3rd gen Jetta) TDI, mine is seriously rusty...

Re: [MBZ] A blast of music from the past

2016-11-15 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
I spent a good bit of time in Puerto Rico in 1977. Out in the country side, not
San Juan. It cured me of any desires for Spanish music. Although I did find the
colorful fire stations very interesting architecture.
Just another perspective..
Best Wishes,
