Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-12-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Had to move some furniture over to the house from the MIL’s this morning, which
took pretty much all morning.

Got home and installed the new right rear taillight lens and seal. Easy peasey.

Rolled the car out of the garage and ran it long enough to turn around and pull
into the garage nose first. Popped the hood and changed out the composite
washer on the fuel filter bolt for the copper crush washer from the dealer.
Went inside to do some other stuff.

Came back out about an hour later and pulled the valve cover. Found another
broken rubber mount on the air cleaner, which I suspected as it was vibrating
more than I expected, and also noticed that the thermostat housing was leaking
at the joint between the cover and housing. Not a surprise since the
thermostat seal was hard as a rock. Something else to add to the Monday
morning parts order.

Got the valve cover off and started in on the valves with my regular wrenches.
Dang it! I wish I had kept the set of valve adjusting wrenches that Russ Maki
gave me when he sold his diesel. Poop.

So it’s off to Harbor Freight to drop $16 on a couple of sets of cheap Chinee
combination wrenches. Stopped by the Ace to see if they had copper washers, as
the valve cover hold down studs/nuts had none, which explained why they were
leaking. No joy there,, the majik drawers failed me. Darn!

Got home, got out the torch and started heating. Got a couple of 14mm wrenches
bent up close to correct and quenched them in a bucket of water.

Went back to the engine and found these did the trick. Not as nice as the real
thing, but definitely better than straight combination wrenches. As with other
fasteners on the car, gorillas must have done the last valve adjustment. Ugh.
All of the valves were really, really tight. I doubt it had been adjusted for
a lot of miles based on what I found. Valve cover looked nice and clean, and
the head looked good as far as a lack of crud.

Back rubber bumper on the air cleaner had sheared off. Only the metal disc and
the cup were still there, and they weren’t budging. I filled the cup with
Kroil and shot some underneath to hit the exposed threads. Went back to doing
some other things and returned with a pair of channelocks about five minutes
later. Remains of the bumper turned right out! Kroil is magical stuff, for
sure.

Got everything buttoned back up and took it for a short test drive. Found that
the copper crush washer on the fuel filter bolt seeps. Dang it!

Kaleb! Find me an 02 fuel filter housing, please! The later one with the two
O-rings on the hollow bolt.

With the filter seeping, the thermostat cover seeping and no washers on the
valve cover nuts/studs, I’m not going to drive it until I get everything to
seal it up well. Despite the minor issues it runs well, even better than it
did. I was surprised as I didn’t think a valve adjustment would make that much
difference.

Time to hit the shower and then let my back rest. Hanging over that engine
adjusting valves is a real pain in the back…

[MBZ] Antilock warning light

2016-12-03 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Anti-lock yellow light came on in the 300D the other day, changed the
master cylinder today because I was having to pump up the brakes -- it
has 400,000 miles or so on it. Used the one from the wrecked car.

Anyway, the anti-lock light comes on when the car moves, so I assume I
have a bad wheel sensor. Any reasonable way to tell which one?

Yeah, I don’t cheap out on stuff like brakes, but in this case the boy sourced
them. I gave him the requisite warning but he’s an adult now, so he knows
better, of course.

Akebonos for me. Shop around and you can find some good deals on them. I got
a full set (both axles) for the SL500 from Amazon, as they had the best price.

You can get Jurids or Pagids for probably around $40/axle, maybe even from the
dealer, but you get the dust.

No rocket science here, just drive the pins out, compress the pistons with a
set of channelocks or vice grips using the old pads, blow or rinse everything
off well, grease the edges of the new pads and use the majik MB antisqueal
brake paste on the backs of the pads, slip them in with a set of new wear
sensors, drive the pins back in and button up.

Re: [MBZ] W123 OE Taillight

2016-12-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Lens was drop shipped from Lokey MB to me in the MB box, still sealed with the
foil hologram stickers. I was stunned when I saw it because I immediately knew
it was an OE lens. I’m tempted to check with my dealer parts guy to see what’s
up. I guess it could be distressed inventory, especially if it’s too old for
stock rotation. However, by the time you factor in the profit for both the
seller and the dealer, the cost couldn’t be more than about $30.

If I wasn’t cutting back a bit on expenditures right now I would buy the left
one so I have a matching set of new lenses. Maybe after the holidays if it’s
still there.

I drove pizzas in mine, got in it 50-100x a day tracking salty slush in the
winter, replaced the driver side floor with plywood around 1987 or so. No other
rust worth mentioning, in ten years in Michigan, which is a lot more than I can
say for my 1975 Honda or my 1977 Saab. Passenger side of the floor was mint when
I pulled the carpet and front seat out to bolt the plywood in. My fuel gauge
died around 180k, but for the first six months it would come back briefly if I
pounded my fist on the dash. After that I just gassed it up every 300 miles
without fail.

plugs) on it some time earlier. Mine was like an '82 or '83, had a terrible
3spd slushbox that finally quit all over the road in front of my parent's
house. The red stain was there for a long time. That car was awful but had
lived under extremely challenging circumstances for 10 years or more. I did a
"tune up" with all junkyard parts, redid all 4 brakes again with junkyard
parts, drove it something like 10,000 miles on basically no money. I think I
might have even used junkyard oil. The one thing I never touched was the
transmission...

My Citation had a pellet filled catalyst, which was a pretty effective muffler.
When the muffler disappeared (I loaned the car to my brother for a day, he gave
it back with the parking brake on and the muffler knocked off), it wasn't
objectionably loud, so I paid a muffler shop $12 + 8 installation for a custom
straight pipe to replace the muffler and tail pipe.
Went another 40,000 miles or so with just the converter for muffling. Got 38mpg
on a backroads commute, don't remember seeing mpg that high when it had a
muffler on it.

It was a very early Citation 5 door, made Feb '79 I believe, went over 200,000
miles before I broke a shift fork and scrapped it in 1989, never had more cargo
space in a car until my S210 wagon. People say the FWD X body cars were junk,
but I beg to differ.

They appear to be legit prices... I'm curious to see what I can get them
for. I might have a buy a few sets!

These are exactly the kind of thing that will be $500 each (like W126
tails) in a few years.

Yep. That's the place alright. I was drilling holes in the beams
so that I could put rebar through them to lift and plant them in
the concrete. I remember hearing the plane fly over and stood up

I saw that. It is very visible on the satellite picture.

If the picture you see has some long poles sitting near it on the edge
of the runway laying E-W then look real close at the E end of the poles
and you can see a shadow of me standing there.

Yup, as shown in the attached picture.

I've done two.

Clean the compressor very well, the last thing you want is grit in the
seals.

Not a bad job.

Compressor has to come out, so replace all the o-rings including the
four under the top plate.

The new seal will leak a little until it runs in completely, but I've
never had an issue with them after that.

Thanks, Rick and Peter.

Just got done watching Bob?s videos on resealing. Looks pretty straightforward
and not difficult at all. I ordered a resealing kit with the shaft protector
on eBay for about $23 just now, so I?ll probably take this on next week.

Any reason why one couldn?t use compressor oil rather than mineral oil for
reassembly?

Also, I assume there are charts somewhere that will give the amount of oil to
fill the compressor with before reinstalling it? I?ll do some Googling?.

That’s a score! I did the same when my rear bumper on the 2002 4Runner rusted
through. I went on line and some dealer in Arkansas had one in stock and
wanted to get rid of it. I think I paid $280 for the 3-piece bumper.

I’m going to look for some turn signal lenses.
