My first thought was to put a 2" hitch on it, with one of those cargo trays,
and set a 11hp generator on the tray. Then I found out that you can't power up
a modern EV and drive it if there's anything plugged into the charge jack. A
pity, because a series hybrid would be the simplest way to extend the range.

Not sure about the hybrids, but in a really efficient electric
(SparkEV), a regenerative stop puts enough juice in the battery to get
80% of the original kinetic energy from the drivetrain. I think 80% is
very good, but you're still better off coasting to a stop than using
engine braking.

Mitch.

And all completely neglecting the energy loss in extracting energy to
generate the Lektricity, losses in generation, losses in transmission
etc, to put the Lektrjuicity in the Spark EEV.

We discussed that some years back. Scott was all for it, but to be honest I
didn’t have the time to devote to it in order to make it successful.

As I’ve said before the existing chapter has a small core of devotees who
pretty much windmill through the board positions. It’s a purely social club
for them and nothing else, for that matter, I would venture you could change
the marque and they wouldn’t care. They hold meetings close to home at Crown
MB in St. Pete, which is nearly 90 minutes from my house, to which I would
gladly travel it there was some impetus to do so. There are now five dealers
in our area, most if not all I would expect would welcome having the club
membership come by for whatever reason. Suggestions that we hold meetings in
alternate locations were summarily dismissed, despite the likelihood that doing
so would increase membership, which was also pointed out during the discussion.

You are totally missing the point. Electric cars are new (again), so they
are cool and better than what is now old. Case closed. That's all there is
to it. New stuff creates more jobs while it's in the process of replacing
the old. (then there is a net loss of jobs due to the automation of
producing the new stuff, but we don't go there).

I was talking to a class a couple weeks ago about my loader adventure,

I let my membership lapse years ago. They used to have a somewhat active
forum, then they changed it to make it as bad as possible and nearly
impossible to use, and drove away most of the forum users. That forum and
Marshall Booth were the only reasons I was a member.

Our local section would have a couple events every year, but usually they
were purely social. I went to one, there was a really nice 126 parked by
the sign-in desk, I admired it and asked if it was a diesel. The guy
behind the desk owned the car, when I mentioned a diesel engine he about
threw up on my shoes and went on a small tirade about how awful those
diesels were. I was kinda shocked, realized that snobs were abounding, and
so I found the few members who actually turned their own wrenches and hung
with them.

[MBZ] What tool for removing AC service valve core?

2017-05-15 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dieselvolk,

A few weeks ago someone suggested this tool for removing the AC low
pressure service valve core so that I could install a new core. The tool
doesn't work for my '95 E300 Diesel.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KITSMI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8=1

The working end of the tool does not fit over the needle in the middle of
the valve core, and there doesn't appear to be any raised part of the core
below the needle that a tool like this could turn.

How do I replace this valve?

One of my British coworkers was bemoaning spending £1000 getting the brakes

I didn't run his nose in it by telling him I'll be into it about $500 and I did

Then you have overlooked something somewhere. Check the ground
from the plug to the body ground and make sure you have power in
the plug. Or bring it down here and I'll take a look at it. ;-)

The things have never responded to the rheostat when I turned the headlights

stuff does not seem to make light on the cluster, but the radio and ashtray
light up.
I pulled the cluster a few days ago and gave it a test. The rheostat is not
working, as the spring unrolled and did not make decent contact anyway. I used
the multimeter to chase things. Used 12v to see where electrons flowed. They
seemed to flow enough between ground and spots on the rheostat. They flow
across the ground strap on the cluster. They flow well enough to put power to
the ground and apply to the the spot on the board at the bulbs both light up.
But, I can not figure out where the electrons are falling off.
Anybody ever have this happen?

Re: [MBZ] Mbca

2017-05-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Most people live pretty boring lives and like it that way.
I was talking to a class a couple weeks ago about my loader adventure, and this
was before I had done anything to it and I mentioned turkey hunting and the
time Fred and Dwight and Dimitri and I put a head gasket in the 240D, on and
on. The class was amazed, a big weekend for them is taking the dog for a walk
and finding a new series on Netflix.

There was a Cadillac club in Houston, I went once and took my 76 Eldo.
It's kinda rough but ran well and was fun.  They were a bunch of old
farts sitting around drinking coffee and talking about pretty much
nothing, certainly not much to do with Cadillacs.  They spent just a few
minutes looking at the cars, most of them were not anything particularly
special, there were a few maybe 60s and 70s that were nice enough, but I
don't think many of the OFs had actually done much on them.  I was kinda
hoping to get knowledge of repairs or parts sources or something kinda
car-related, much like all you loosers provide, but it was just sitting
around drinking coffee.  I realized after I got home my dad would have
enjoyed it, kinda like the excitement of the living roof sofa ride of a
Cadillac going down the road.  That's what the OFs reminded me of, about
as exciting as the living room sofa.

We can burn the excess oil to produce electricity. The petroleum powered
generator feeding the motor/batteries would make long range electric
vehicles feasible (serial?).

Re: [MBZ] Mbca

2017-05-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Re: [MBZ] Mbca

2017-05-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’ve railed about this enough times everyone knows where i stand on the club.
Pierre is the regional director now, but I don’t see him doing anything to
change stuff that I know of. Scott Sits, a long time MBCA guy and former
regional director, made a real effort to get more car related events into the
calendar, but the locals kept their thumb on his efforts and eventually ran him
out.

I would gladly go to a “Cars and Coffee” or a DIY event, even if it was
populated with old farts. Nothing remotely involving such an activity down
here, never has been and probably never will be as long as the club governing
members keep their wrinkly old hands on the chapter.

As I said previously, they keep everything at one dealer that’s convenient to
them, won’t go anywhere else in the area for meetings, and even refused a DIY
event my dealer offered to sponsor gratis.

They suck.

We can burn the excess oil to produce electricity. The petroleum powered
generator feeding the motor/batteries would make long range electric
vehicles feasible (serial?).

Distance is not the issue, it is time. Just getting from Chucktown to
Columbia (about 110 miles) can take 12-24 hours, due to the unbelievable
traffic jam. That's mostly spent at idle, AC blasting, waiting for the
line of cars to move. I would imagine that an electric car would require 3
to 5 or more recharges in order to do that.

Yes, one generally has at least a few days warning, but that can happen
several times each summer (once we had EIGHT such warnings in a summer).
Jumping in the car and evacuating BEFORE the roads get clogged up into a
huge mess means that you'd probably be evacuating several times each
summer. Not very realistic.

And yes, last I checked, folks died here in Chucktown when Floyd (the
hurricane) paid a visit, just like they died in N'olans (Bush's fault in
case anyone forgot).

Re: [MBZ] Bad news for Dan

2017-05-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Florida is majorly messed up when it comes to energy and utilities.

Until recently in Florida the only entities that could "sell" power were the
utilities. This was how they squashed any attempts at net metering. This has
since been changed as of the election last year when an amendment to the state
constitution was ratified by the voters, effectively ending the utilities'
choke hold on the control of electrical power in the state.

They're still trying to screw us, the most recent effort being a bill that
would have allowed them to charge rate payers for exploratory energy
development efforts, whether or not they yielded results. In other words, rate
payers would be on the hook for the cost to do exploratory drilling outside of
Florida. If the efforts were unsuccessful, the rate payers would eat the costs.

Hardly an equitable arrangement for the rate payers. Nice if you're a
stockholder, however

Just pump your PV power into the grid all day when the grid needs power the
most. Suck back off the grid at night when demand is lowest...
If you can get net metering and get paid demand rate during the day when rates
are highest and then only pay slack rate at night you could come out ahead.
It just occured to me, one of the ways the utilities screw people with PV
arrays is they pay only wholesale rates to buy power off your array but charge
full residential rates when you use energy of the grid. They claim all
suppliers get paid the same rate. It seems like the counter argument to this is
that if I'm a wholesale supplier I should also be considered a wholesale
customer...
Actually the prime way some utilities get to screw with people is that they
don't pay anything when you're spinning the meter backward. That way if you end
up with net production the utility gets it for free. One of them, I think it
was in Florida, claimed it wasn't possible to meter and pay people for net
production even though in other parts of the country, New England for instance,
its the standard.

Re: [MBZ] Sweet mother of god this is the car I have been looking for

2017-05-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Well back then I was switching cars once a year or sooner. By the time I was 18
I had already had 5 cars, in 2 years. So I guess it was more than once a year.
I loved that 240d I just had cadd back then. Now days I still get lots of cars
but don't sell them that often.

True.

But the pro-electric crowd is touting "electric for everything" -
so is guilty of the same error.

I very much do NOT live in a city - but I can't think of anyone I
know personally that would be able to only have electric cars and
not also have to noticeable change their lifestyle.

However, many could benefit from including an electric. But that
means multiple cars. Believe it or not, not everyone has a yard
full of cars. *grin*

And from what I can tell, a well used electric is not a bargain as
it is ripe for an expensive battery replacement. A 10-15 year old
liquid fuel car is much cheaper than new and still can have a lot
of life left. I don't see that economic model working for
electrics...

Re: [MBZ] Lektrick cahs in hurricanes Was: Bad news for Dan

2017-05-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A dead car is a dead car, how would  a dead electric car be worse?
The devastated parts of New Orleans that will never come back probably
shouldn't have been built on in the first place. Anywhere built below sea level
is going to flood and its going to flood repeatedly no matter what we do. We
can stay water for awhile but its not a long term solution.
My point was that by Max's reasoning everybody without a car dies in a flood
and that is obviously not true. I know I'm not going to change anybody's mind
about this so we'll just wait 10 years and see how many electric cars there
are. Considering that 10 years ago I almost never saw an electric car outside
of events specifically for them and today I see one pretty much every week I
expect in 10 years for them to be fairly common, maybe 20-25% of the total
fleet.

There are families of 1,245 people who (officially) died in hurricane
Katrina and subsequent floods who would argue with you.    At that,
Katrina was only the third deadliest United States hurricane.  Overall,
it was a much bigger deal than the collapse of the WTC buildings.

People evacuated to as far as 1000  miles away  or more, and here, 1000
miles away, we had significant rain and wind from the remains of
Katrina.  I would take my rusty SDL 100 times over a Lektrick car in
the event of being in the way of the next big hurricane.  You don't
understand the amount of traffic needed to evacuate.  They made 4 land
roads one way and still the traffic jams caused significant delays,
accidents and surely deaths not attributed to the hurricane.

Now, 11 years after, most of the area devastated by katrina is still
barren.  We are talk about probably 97% still not rebuilt.

In an evacuation even, when the battery is dry, you would be on foot, a
hobo or hobo family, caught in days of torrential rains.  You could
probably sirvive that, but how many of your neighbors could.

During the katrina evac, filling stations quickly ran out of gas, and
cars ran out of gas on the road and blocked traffic.  Lektrik cars would
be far worse.

acquisition costs somewhat reasonable with the costs to refurb batteries.

So who is going to become the list EV bottom feeder?

OK thanks, I guess I thought you were going to replace all the o-rings on
the fuel injection pump fuel line connections when you had the manifold off.

I was getting all of the breather hoses and fittings. If you want that list
I'll post it.

You can look up stuff here:

Re: [MBZ] Bad news for Dan

2017-05-15 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Pretty much yes, in my Wagon. Carries me to/from work, carries the family
on vacation, tows the boat. Plenty of room to load up SWMBO, SWMBette, 2x
cats, a couple suitcases, and tow the boat behind during evacuation.
