[MBZ] Mayan Gold

2017-06-14 Thread clay via Mercedes
… is not the gold I thought it would be. Very red, into orange.

Summit racing had a deal on single stage gold paint for $130/gal. I was not
interested in paying twice that for a two stage base and then getting clear as
well. But, I ended up ordering clear anyway, just in case.

So, Allen came to me in original MB gold for 1982. Not sure the code, but the
clear was trashed and there was much damage to paint as well as pitting and
scratches. I did not want to get crazy or go overboard in making the car a DD.
The paint would need attention, since the body and interior are in rather good
form. No rust at all, most systems working, spare parts came with the free
car, engine runs and transmission shifts. It was really just a bunch of PnP
updating.

The paint. though, was another game altogether. I had done rattle can on
Polei, and that was not going to play for a DD. I learned all the what not to
do with that car. A real gun spray was the only solution. Would I send it out
or do it my own self was the question. I looked into cost for pro job as well
as pro paint. Maaco single stage was about the same cost as a gallon of base
coat, but I did not want to pay that much for a half donkey job. I am able to
do that level for less.

Except, I ended up spending about what I would have paid them to do the job
myself.

I had to source all my own tools and the prep items, which made for a pretty
good chunk of change. Upgrades to the compressor set up, guns, paint, prep
items. Then I needed a paint booth. Rent one for a couple days, or ask mother
if her garage might do? The bottom feeder in me went with Mom’s two car garage.

Tape, staples, 7 mil visquine, a box fan, some furnace filters, old bedsheets,
a heater, a pair of Ikea lights, paper suit, full face chemical respirator, and
the paint stuff, and I was good to go. I spent most of the day setting up the
paint area and masking off the car. By the time I got it all put right, it was
past dinner, but still light enough for a novice idiot to attempt a spray.

Turned out it was too dark to see properly and lighting is really key to being
able to tell what you are doing. Space is another thing you can never have
enough of. Wetting the floor is a very smart thing to do, otherwise your feet
and socks end up stuck to the floor after a while. The paper monkey suits are
not built with sturdy zippers, so you have to tape yourself in and then do the
pee-pee dance the rest of the spray and clean up, until you can escape. If you
remove all the dangly bits and extraneous matter, you are less likely to have
bald spots or need to clean paint off things later. Use a primer coat all over
the car and do not attempt last minute spot fixes, as you will be fixing drips,
runs and smears, as well as finding that the stuff below telegraphs. Plastic
is a crap wall and will ripple and flap, such that it contacts your freshest
paint. Somehow, a drip/drop will plop in the middle of your largest or least
accessible horizontal surface.

The car came out looking good. A veritable 15 footer if looked at in low
light. I am sure that I could have paid less for a class on how to do it
properly, but I know I would not have learned as much that way. Should I do
this again (which may be more likely than I am going to admit right now) I will
rent the booth so that I have the best environment to do a poor execution. It
might just be worth $80 a day to be able to strip down the car, mask it well,
and then take less than an hour to spray it in the best possible way I can.
Then I can clean up at a bench instead of sitting on the cement patio in the
dark, blindly trying to clean my gun. The next morning, I can be fresh and
carefully put the car all back together. A person really does need to pretty
much tear the thing apart so you can put paint in all the places it needs to be.

Pix will be posting on BW.

[MBZ] Cheap radiators

2017-06-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Well the cheap eBay radiator lasted less than a week. Looks like the stupid
boy may have hit something again because when I looked at the car the radiator
was loose from the top clips and pushed back. It does not appear the fan
contacted the radiator though as I don't see any damage. There is a huge stream
pissing out near the top next to the passenger side tank. I can't tell for sure
but depending on how long he drove it could have blown a head gasket. It did
start right up and seems to run fine and I don't see any water in oil or oil in
coolant. I guess I'm going to raise hell with the eBay guy and tell the kid he
is going to have to pay for the real deal. I should have known better but was
trying to save him money.

Re: [MBZ] buggered lug bolt

2017-06-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have had incredible success with welding a nut on a broken bolt using a
wire feed welder with the nut held in position with pliers and the wire
inserted inside the nut so the weld is captured within the nut. Then pull
the weld trigger and make a weld puddle inside the nut.

I've used this trick on broken bolts that were overhead and in impossible
positions to drill. So far.. the welding heat traveled down the broken
seized bolt and broke the rust bond on the threads allowing the bolt to be
turned out with a socket on the "new nut".

One trick that really seems to help is a quick quench with water while the
weld is still glowing hot. Seems to shrink the bolt in place and break the
bond better.

Good luck. Play safe.

Sounds like a good opportunity to weld a nut on the end and use that to
turn it out.

Heat from the weld will loosen the threads as well.
More difficult to do if the bolt is broken off below the surface but
should be fairly easy if it is flush.

Re: [MBZ] W210 4Matic

2017-06-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You could put $2k in this car easy and it would still be a turd. Lots of
cosmetic issues.

I could probably get this car for $2500:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/6134247500.html

It needs a new IR remote/fob and some serious clean up in the interior, but
it’s intact and everything works on it. Even has the optional lumbar supports,
which I have yet to see in any other car I’ve looked at. Paint and mechanicals
are good, but since it’s a 97 it’s got an M104 and not the M112. I don’t think
it would bring more than $3500 on a really good day, though.

I’m learning that W210s are flipping ubiquitous when it comes to later model
used sedans. There’s boatloads of the things and most are pretty awful. The
really nice ones don’t seem to carry their part of the market because they’re
older, simple, nowhere near as luxurious as an S-class, and pretty much don’t
hold any significant value.

large EZ outs work pretty well, small ones are very easy to break.

nope. I wrote, it, but I didn't name it. It is the triggerfish with a
snout like a pig.

It is the state fish.

The "gospel" according to wikipedia:
The reef, rectangular, or wedge-tail triggerfish, also known by its
Hawaiian name humuhumunukunukua-pua?a (pronounced
[?humu?humu?nuku?nuku?wa?pu?w???] and meaning "triggerfish with a snout
like a pig"[1]), also spelled humuhumunukunukuapua'a or just humuhumu
for short, is one of several species of triggerfish. Classified as
Rhinecanthus rectangulus, it is found at reefs in the Indo-Pacific[2]
and is the state fish of Hawaii. It is often asserted that the Hawaiian
name is one of the longest words in the Hawaiian language and that "the
name is longer than the fish," though Lauwiliwilinukunuku?oi?oi is
actually a longer fish name.[3]

Not bad, priced a little high, maybe not too much considering the miles. It’s
probably going to need top cylinders, too, which is a good $700 and a couple
days worth of work, but not difficult.

I’d say $4000, maybe $4500 would be fair considering the mileage.

Jeebus I hate those wheels.

Re: [MBZ] Anyone Got a Spare Cadillac Converter?

2017-06-14 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
You mean my wife’s Cadillac? It is Silver just like a million others.

As much as I dislike the car, it has its merits. It is loaded with goodies and
still looks pretty good. It must be built pretty well because she has been
rear-ended in it twice. Once she was sitting at a stoplight and an ice cream
truck ran into her. Seriously an ice cream truck. Bashed up the rear bumper
and a couple minor things underneath. Then, less than 6 months later a young
couple crashed pretty hard into her. It totaled their car – an older Nissan
Maxima. It needed a new bumper again but it also banged up the exhaust and the
rear axle. It was a pretty hefty bill for their insurance company. She and my
stepdaughter were not hurt in the crash. I hate the engine. It has the 3.6
DOHC that has serious timing chain issues. We got GM to repair it once, but I
don’t know if the gears/chain/tensioner have been updated to fix the flaw.
Other than the timing chain, it has been fairly reliable. It has over 125,000
miles.

[MBZ] buggered lug bolt

2017-06-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I was taking a wheel off the $200POSEL, looks like they had put the
original spare on and did not tighten the bolts as it was a bit wobbly
on there. Anyway, getting the bolts out was hard, they were really
rusted in there, and one sheared off in the hub. I guess that means
that I will need to drill it out if I decide to do something with the
car, and then chase the other holes with a tap? And the lug bolts are
half rusty where they were not fully seated, I have never done that
electrolysis thing but wonder if that might be the way to clean them up
unless they are some weird metal or plated or galvanized or something?
Any ideas?

It needs a serious cleaning and Dan has some expertise in that!

What is the story with these. I really like them, but I don't know enough

strut perch? In 98 they started using the M112 engine. Are they problematic?

[MBZ] SECRiT MESAGE FOR MAX Re: Temptation

2017-06-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
If I don't get an email response soon I'll ring him up, maybe see about
tomorrow? If nothing else that maroon one has a good set of wheels I
could put on the SEC, or the black one is a bit more pimpish but might
look good. $500 for the pair? I bet we could do it, sell an engine to
Curley for $600! (Don't tell him!)

I know where there is a dead 560SEL on James I that looks like has been
sitting forever behind a fish shack over there in a black area but
otherwise in not bad shape. I am going to see about taking a look at it
too, a friend knows someone in the family or something to do with the
fish shack, I know her vaguely in passing so might be able to work
something out. She is an agitator too, so we have that commonality.

I sent the guy an email, there is a phone # so if I don't hear back I
might call him. If the map is any indication they look fairly close by
so would not be hard to go look at them. Depending on what they are I
could get some spares for the SEC and if one of them might happen to be
a 300SEL I could maybe get some bits and a tranny for the $200POSEL

[MBZ] wrecked 123

2017-06-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I had on some PBS show last night about this guy in Texas who was
executed for setting a fire that killed his kids, turns out he was
probably innocent. Anyway, this reporter took up the case and was
chasing details on it, at some point fairly far along she was driving
from Houston to Austin or Huntsville or somewhere and got in a car wreck
and messed up pretty bad. They showed a pic of the wreck and it was a
123 of some sort she was driving. The car actually didn't look that
bad, what they showed of it, looked like a head-on, but I guess it was
bad enough to bang her up pretty good.
