Re: [MBZ] OT: Shirley had her hip surgery

2017-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our big problem was that they gave the wife the morphine drip with the button.
She would hit the button, doze off for an hour or two, only to awaken in severe
pain because she hadn’t been medicated for two hours. Of course, hitting the
button again didn’t generate enough happy juice to even take the edge off, so
that was pretty much worthless.

After a night of lousy sleep and lots of pain, she made them take the
self-medication thing away and just give her a straight dose. That made a
significant difference in her pain management.

I haven't been in the hospital since I was about 10 years old to have my arm
rebroken/reset by an orthopedist who screwed it up when he set it. I blew
chunks all over a nun in the recovery room, for which I am sure I will pay for
in another life, no doubt.

I can’t imagine going through all this stuff myself. I would be coming unglued.

she was overmedicated while in the hospital (four days).  Older folks don't
metabolize stuff like the younger folks used in the studies, I believe.  My
wife started getting "better" the day she left the hospital for rehab where
they minimized the drugs.  To this day she has almost no memory of her time in
that hospital.
The physical therapy isn't fun but it's important to regain normal function.
Schedule pain meds to facilitate physical and occupational therapy.  Also don't

Shirley's surgery was in the afternoon, so they planned to have her up
and moving yesterday. Unfortunately, she was very nauseous, was quite
dehydrated, and had low blood pressure, so they kept her in bed (better
to have her in bed than fall because she was dizzy). The physical
therapist did stop by and carefully manipulated her leg while she was
lying in the bed, so her joint was not entirely immobile yesterday.

She's still in bed today, a little better, but she's having troubles
knowing where she is. Hopefully the physical therapist will make a visit
this afternoon so she can get some more activity in.

2017-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wish her well, Craig. I hope she has a speedy recovery.

Went through this with the wife a couple of years ago. Her left hip had
deteriorated to the point of her being nearly unable to walk it was so painful.
Her hip surgery was done robotically which I thought was pretty cool. They
had her up and walking the next day, and kept her going at it constantly. Not
fun, but I think it did a lot to speed her recovery.

Her Mom just had a hip done last year, and they had her up and walking the day
of surgery. She was out of the hospital a day later and walking pretty well on
her own within a week - she’s in her early 80s and pretty active.

Amazing how quickly they get people back up and walking after such a major
surgery.

Re: [MBZ] Buy E320 Diesel with prior body damage?

2017-07-16 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The title wouldn't be branded unless the car was totaled or rebuilt. Those
are, for the most part, the only reasons for branding a title.

As for value, I would definitely argue for reduced value. Certainly the car has
been repaired, but you have nothing to show for who did the repairs and how
they were done.

Are they asking market price? If so, I would definitely challenge them on it.
You can be assured that the insurance company would argue for diminished value
in the event of a loss, I'm betting.

[MBZ] Buy E320 Diesel with prior body damage?

2017-07-16 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
So I've been looking around for an E320. One of the (very few) decent looking
options is an '08 diesel with under 100K mi, it is essentially a 2-owner
vehicle. The owner has come forth with a carfax report that shows the vehicle
had been in an accident when it was practically new. The first owner kept it
for about 3 years, and then it was sold at auction. The title was NOT branded
as a result of the accident.

07/15/2008 Damage Report Accident reported

Damage to right front

Damage to right front pillar

Damage to right side

Damage to right side quarter post

Damage to right front and right rear

03/03/2009 Texas

Motor Vehicle Dept.

Grapevine, TX

Title

#22030839496124134

Registration issued or renewed

Loan or lien reported

Passed safety inspection

What has your collective experience been with this sort of scenario? Give the
seller points for honesty? Reject this prospect out of hand because of the
prior damage? Expect to pay less than a book private sale price for this car?

TIA,

Greg

Too bad the dash cracked anyway.

[MBZ] Nowata / Washington County DA's embezzlement

2017-07-16 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Hey, Kaleb, did you guys ever prosecute the embezzler and/or fire his boss?

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150724/06522631747/audits-asset-forfeiture-program-uncover-funds-used-to-pay-student-loans-property-used-as-rent-free-housing.shtml

In a 2014 audit of the DA’s office representing Washington and Nowata counties
[Oklahoma], the State Auditor’s Office found that $5,000 in forfeiture funds
had been used to make payments on an assistant district attorney’s student
loans.

The report said the district attorney maintained the expense was justified
because most of the cases the assistant DA prosecuted were drug cases.

Re: [MBZ] C4 Diagnostic System

2017-07-16 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
With regard to laptops with compatible RS-232 ports: According to what I have
read, some ThinkPads newer than the T30 can in fact work. For example, the T400
has no serial port, but if coupled with the 2504 mini-dock, should work fine.
The mini-dock has serial and parallel ports. USB serial adapters don't work for
Xentry. But apparently these ports do not use a USB interface, and thus behave
exactly like a native RS-232 port.

Subject: [MBZ] C4 Diagnostic System

Greg had requested that I elaborate on the C3/C4 system, so here’s what I know.
Kaleb please add whatever you want to this as you have the later C4 system, I
believe. I have a C3.

I couldn't tell you who I bought mine from, as I bought it at least 3-4 years
ago - it was a vendor on “aliexpress” which is a portal for alibaba, the
Chinese supplier web site. If you search their site for “Mercedes C4” you’ll
find a number of suppliers and offers. Maybe Kaleb knows who he got his from.
There are a bunch of sellers on eBay if you search for “Xentry C4” or C3

There was a C3 system, which consists of the connecting cables, multiplexer,
and C3 software either on an external hard drive or installed on a Dell or IBM
laptop computer. My software is dated from 2013, so I believe it will cover
just about any MB up to around 2010 or thereabouts.

The current C4 system uses an Ethernet or wifi signal to connect to the
multiplexer. The system is similar in that it consists of the same components
only you don’t have to make a physical connection to the mux to use it, which
makes things a lot more convenient as you don’t have wires strung all over the
place. It’s also a lot easier when you’re doing road tests, too.

Most of the sellers want to supply the laptop with the software loaded and
tested. While this is the more expensive way, it’s definitely a lot safer as
you know you’re getting a working system. In my case I had some issues with
the licensing key and the supplier had to do a remote session on my computer to
sort things out.

If you’re not worried about working on the late model stuff, I would stick with
a C3 system. They’re simpler but less expensive than the C4 systems, and I’m
hearing that Xentry doesn’t support the HHT emulator after a recent version
change. Without the HHT you’re pretty much unable to connect to anything prior
to 2002.

I see C3 systems from Chinese sellers on eBay with a Dell 630 laptop for under
$500. Since eBay is a relatively safe place to buy, I would probably go that
route if it were me.

Hope this helps.

To make one or two you'd end up costing multiples what you'd pay to just buy
them. Liquid polyurethane makes a foam, not strong enough. Remember sheer
strength is required here. Durometer on these must be 100 or more...
To make the volume required to make it economical you'd need to sell them which
then involves stupid amounts of liability...
Makes $150 a decade or so seem pretty reasonable.

Even just using your hand can work. I don't think I would touch
the condenser inlet for very long. It can be hot enough to
_hurt_. But evaporator inlet and outlet temp can be compared by
touch.

> I have not tried the rest pressure test.

You hadn't said and I wanted to be clear. *smiles*

Usually I see low side pressures very low when it's
under-charged. Unless the low-pressure switch is bypassed, this
means the compressor doesn't run for very long before shutting off.

Full disclosure - I have done little with the Mercedes AC. Lots
with Chevy and some with Ford.

Even a little refrigerant will provide some cooling. If the
outside temperature isn't Poos or Bob Rentfro hot it might be
enough. And driving, with lots of air flowing through the
condenser, makes it easy for the air conditioner.
