Crowrozeon, very common up here in rust (corrosion) central.

Joanne's Corolla had the pigtail rot away.

It is not very well protected, sometimes they put a plastic sheath on it,
mostly not, just the same paint as the casing.

Would that cause the braid wire between solenoid and starter to disintegrate?
Would that cause the starter or solenoid to freeze up?

Re: [MBZ] Pulling engine 420SEL

2017-09-20 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Best to have a rack on the lift that lets you tilt the engine. As you come up,
crank it back so it's tail heavy, will allow the oil pan to clear the radiator
support while the tranny tail is still under the firewall.

You need to practice, as this is how it goes back in, gotta drop the tranny end
down while getting the oil pan over the radiator support.

It's not bad, gets easier as you do it a time or two.

They are heavy, make sure you have a two ton lift

treatments) took her straight back to the shelter as soon as the vet cleared
her for returning to normal life.

For heartworm, I administer 25 microliters of 1% Ivermectin solution by mouth
(250μG of Ivermectin). A small bottle marketed for equine injections lasts for
years, I throw it out when its shelf life expires. When Brianna got Daisy, I
was surprised when my vet told me that I wouldn't hurt a 10lb dog by giving her
250μG, so I didn't have to buy a 5 or 10μL pipettor for her.

Mitch.

I had been by there a couple of times. He is an old friend of my father in law.
Father in law used to sell him pot back in the day. Did you know he is never

Assume a car is 7' wide and 15' long => 105 ft^2

   7000 ft^2
 - = 66-2/3 cars
   105 ft^2

That's not near 200, but it certainly is more than I have been putting

Re: [MBZ] OT: If you have a dog.....

2017-09-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The ticks were just brutal this spring, between Buster and I we were getting
20+ on each walk. We got him a serresto collar and a can of "Repel" for me and
that number is now zero ticks since the end of June...Mostly we don't have deer
ticks, they're out there but much less common than their larger cousins.
Lyme is nothing to mess with, Angie's aunt's boyfriend has been fighting it for
a few years, just as he was getting over it he got it again...
Interestingly when Buster and I were finding so many none of them were biting
me, I'd find them crawling in my hair but they didn't bite. I had one bit this
year, it was in an *ahem* delicate area...

From

it seems that

http://www.allivet.com/p-1363-k9-advantix-ii-for-dogs.aspx

is a slightly better choice. With it taking care of mosquitos, it would
help with heartworm, though one should have a separate medication program
for that, too.

[MBZ] Pulling engine 420SEL

2017-09-20 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I'm getting close to pulling the "good" engine from the 420SEL donor, I
have disconnected and pulled everything from the engine bay that might
be useful (the AC system still held a bit of pressure!).  I have most of
the other stuff knackered too, will finish soon.

Any suggestions for pulling it?  Looks like undo the 2 mounts, get under
and disconnect shifter and whatever around the tranny, flex disk, any
wires and such, then get the crane on it?  I plan to cut off the front
of the frame so it can basically just come up a bit and slide forward,
maybe just roll the car out from under the whole deal.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Generator Heads

2017-09-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Let’s put it this way:

For the average DIY’er trying to assemble an engine generator set out of
disparate parts it is often an exercise in futility. You are not the average
DIY’er.

Adding the additional mass into the system is ideal. While it does take longer
to start up and shut down, the additional mass take a lot of the fluctuation
out when loads are applied and removed. It also gives you more (electrical)
starting power because you’re not totally dependent on the response of the
engine’s fuel system to react to changes in load/speed.

I once worked on a proof of concept project at Kohler that took a 4 cylinder
L654 engine (65.4 CI) designed and built by Kohler back in the 1950s that would
produce 7.5kW at 1800 rpm. If you ever saw one of the little yellow utility
trailers the Bell System folks used for manhole work, there was one of those
units inside of it.

Anyway, we wanted to see if we could make one of these units run a 5kVA UPS
system. The running current wasn’t an issue, but the noise the UPS imposed on
the line from the inverter would drive most voltage regulators crazy,
preventing the system from regulating output in a stable manner. When the
inverter in the UPS kicked on, it would overwhelm the generator, forcing it to
go out of the acceptable frequency window and causing the UPS to drop it as
power source.

We set one of these units up with a 50 pound (and later a 100 pound) flywheel.
While it took a minute to get up to speed, once it did there was little that
would stop it.

IBM and many other mainframe computer manufacturers used motor-generator units
before the advent of modern UPSs’. These were nothing more than a large
electric motor, driving a very large flywheel, which was on a shaft in between
the motor and a generator. When power would fail, the mass of the flywheel
would keep the generator spinning for a short period of time measured in
seconds, but long enough for the mainframe to see the failure and shut the
system down in an orderly fashion. They also took advantage of the generator
being independent of everything else and typically had it running a 208VAC,
three phase, 400Hz. This allowed them to use the motor generator for not only
backup power and transient protection, but also to produce voltage and
frequency of their choice without having to rely on utility power standards.

Yes, I forgot about that Ford design, which moved the contactor function
out of the solenoid into a separate starter relay.

That design does not apply to Mercedes and likely not to Toyota.

Pretty much what Craig says, The only real detail if it mattered would be the
method of engagement. The traditional method, using a solenoid to switch the
high current, is by far the most common.

Ford had a design that I don’t think is in use any more that used a heavy
laminated armature that engaged the Bendix drive rather than a linear solenoid.
It was known as “movable pole shoe” design. It eliminated the solenoid and
fed high current directly to the starter through a relay. There was a “pole
shoe” or for lack of a better description a large flat armature that was hinged
at the drive end of the starter. When current started to flow in the starter
windings, the magnetic field from the starter windings pulled the pole shoe in
against the windings, which pushed the Bendix drive out, engaging the flywheel.

A heavy gauge wire goes between the battery and the solenoid terminal
away from the starter. The other solenoid terminal is connected to a
typically braided pigtail coming out of the starter.

> Is the braid positive? since the motor body is grounded at motor.

Yes, when the solenoid completes the circuit between its two large
terminals, the braid pigtail is positive.

> What would cause the braid to disintegrate? Yes, IL rust. Stalled

The solenoid itself requires much less current than the starter motor,
so it wouldn't cause the braid to disintegrate even if it were bad. The
solenoid has to be grounded to the case since both large terminals go
positive when the starter is engaged.

What about Toyota?

That did surprise me. All highway pretty much door to door.

The body shop gave me a hybrid that does not get that range. Also was too hard
for an old foggy to figure out how to start the thing. Had to have a young
fellow come out to instruct me to put my foot on the brake before I push the
little button. And the silly screens with their video game bio feedback
goofiness makes driving distracting and a game. Eco leaves and battery
recharge, a coach to make you play their games of eco driving, recharge
percentages.

I hate new tech

Re: [MBZ] Good mileage

2017-09-20 Thread MG via Mercedes
Considering that the tank on the 126 holds a little over 23.5
gallons then depending how far you pushed you may have been
getting around 23 MPG or less. Can't tell unless you actually
fill to the same point every time and keep track of the miles and
amount.

I usually fill right to the top of the filler neck, the few times
I don't I put NF on the slip so I remember to combine the amounts
when I figure the mileage at the next fillup.

[MBZ] OT Phantom Pooper

I'll bet she's an Army vet. When I was someplace hot and sandy I learned
about the tradition of the phantom pooper, which is what happens when you
have a bunch of bored soldiers in garrison who decide to have some fun with
the base security forces. Only heard of it happening once on a ship, and
that may have been a sea story, which are known to contain an exaggeration
or two.

Re: [MBZ] Battery repair with epson salt

2017-09-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Another "trick" is to beat on the bottom of the battery a bit with a rubber
mallet before you dump it out, to loosen up the lead that has shed from the
plates and may be shorting out plates if it gets deep enough.

[MBZ] Admin, the list

2017-09-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
As everyone has noticed the list has been off and on, mostly off, since this
past weekend. Our host support had to escalate the issue as it was most likely
due to a bug in the list software. Also a factor is a massive amount of admin
requests in the que. I have not got an update on the ticket so I can only
assume at this point mail coming thru could be interrupted again, but hopefully
the issue is fixed. Up to now I have not been able to even log into the admin
page, or purge the requests. I see I can log into the page and will now attempt
to clear them out. If it lets me if you have sent anything to the list since
this weekend that has needed to be approved, you will need to send it again.
But do not send it again until I follow up with another email letting you know
that I got them cleared out.

Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD running a little hot - fan clutch?

2017-09-20 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Visco clutch test:

If engine is hot, have someone shut it off while you watch the fan. More than
one or maybe two revolutions, the clutch isn't engaging.

Fan should be quite stiff cold, and "roar" for a few seconds when you first
start a cold engine until the silicone fluid pumps out. Only lasts a few
seconds, hard to tell

You can also take some folded up newspaper (to protect your fingers, eh?) and
try to stop the fan while the engine is running and hot enough to engage the
fan. If you can stop the fan, the clutch is shot.

Should also be moving lots of air at idle when engaged, significantly more than
when not.

Usually lots of crud stuck to the clutch when they go bad, the only way they
fail is for the fluid to leak out, and dirt stick to it.

Also verify that you don't have a ton of road debris and dead bugs between the
condenser and radiator, too.

I saw my groundhog this morning. He seems to be about 10 percent less

Well I did the figuring and got 27.4mpg mostly at 70mph with a
