A big part of why I prefer analog gauges is that I don't have to
read the numbers. A glance at where I know the needle _should_ be
is so very much quicker than looking at digits and having to
comprehend them.

If the needle is out of place, then the precision of a digital
gauge can be helpful.

I can see that a speedometer kinda blurs the distinction between
"gauge scanning" and "gauge studying".

Aluminum Electrolytic is the style that is most likely to fail.
So that is probably what you are replacing.

Tantalum are rather pricey, but less likely to fail. I think the
aluminum polymer are also more durable.

Mica and ceramic are probably not available in the sizes big
enough to replace your bad ones.

Some of the rest of these I have no experience with! However, if
the ratings match up (capacitance, voltage, AC vs DC, and size),
any type should work.

Or maybe it's like our '89 Chevy G20 van, where the instruments are
recessed down in holes on the dash. It's hard for me to see them during
the day, too.

When I had the dash apart some months ago and had removed the cover with
the recessed holes, I could see the speedometer and other instruments
excellently at any time of the day or night. The problem of not being able
to see the instruments during the day was just due to horrible design, and
not my eyesight.

That's right. A British friend of mine taught me to tie the perfect bow tie
then muss it up so no one, asks you if it is a clip-on or pre-tied.

2017-11-01 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Normally, I would agree with you. I prefer the old round gauges. But, I
had an 08 Honda Civic for a year and it had the digital speedo up high
above the rest of the gauges. The tach was round and down lower.
I found that the digital speedo was very easy to see and it was easier
to keep track of my speed. The numbers were large and up where I could
see them without having to look down.
My truck on the other hand has round gauges and the numbers are fairly
small. I have to look down and if it is bright and I have sunglasses on,
it is difficult to see the exact speed. Part of that is probably age
related and just a matter of my eyes not adjusting as quickly as they
once did.

I would cheerfully have another vehicle with a speedo like the Civic.

don't think you need a new Cadillac but I do think you need to be in a decent
looking vehicle and preferably a clean vehicle. Clients and other lawyers will
look to see what Don  is driving and will treat him accordingly. If he wants to
drive a beater back and forth on his commute, he should park the BMW somewhere
near the office and swap cars on the way into town.

The same goes for Kaleb and his current issue with the damaged car. He needs to
drive something that looks decent. The Benz was not new but it was a nice car
and people would note that it was an MB. Much preferable to a domestic vehicle
of similar vintage. A good looking classic car turns more heads than a new car
most of the time.

Reminds me of a line from the book I was referring to earlier. An
elderly black preacher travelling the south in days gone by always
carried a nice leather briefcase. His reasoning was, that with the
briefcase, he was a black gentleman and was treated as such. Without it,
he was just another Nr.

Cute.

I agree. As dear old Dad always told me, "Dress like the CEO and people will
treat you like one."

Despite working in a very business casual environment, I still wear dress
pants, dress shirts with French cuffs and cufflinks every day, even on Fridays
("jeans day.") Quite honestly, I'm not comfortable "dressing down" for work.

It was less than $600 shipped for a set of 4. They are listed on Tire Rack in
the size I needed for $154 per tire. When I bought them they had some special
for $30 bucks off per tire.

I should have added to my previous post on this heading -  have you ever
read the book "Dress For Success" and I believe a second book "Live for
Success" by John Malloy, that detailed research done by the writer about
presenting a successful image.

I know in my own experience, I have noticed differences depending on
what I am wearing. I used to often stop at a store similar to your Farm
and Fleet or Harbour Freight on my way back from lunch if they had
something on sale that I wanted. When I wore a jacket and tie, people in
blue collar clothing would step out of the way for me in aisles. If I
was wearing much more casual clothing, they did not defer to me. I guess
the tie was a visual clue that I was someone important?

Our world has become much more casual in the past 20 years or more. Many
people who dressed up for work do not anymore. A suit and tie has become
much less common and thus is noticed.

Re: [MBZ] Michelin Premiere Review was RE: Tires

2017-11-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've actually done really well with my last batch of Chinesium snow tires. Last
winter we were driving home in a snow storm in Angie's Golf when an accident on
the other side of the road shot a car into our lane. I stomped on the binders
thinking "There is no way..." but amazingly the car stopped perfectly, tracked
in a straight line and halted about 10 feet from where the other car (same year
Jetta actually) shot across the road in front of us.
I got us pulled to the side of the road, got out of the car and immediately
slipped and fell...

Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq

2017-11-01 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
It's this 99 E300 dizzel I bought for $500.  I bought some parts for it,
and a new wheel tire, so I'm up to maybe $600 or a bit more now.  It's
throwing some codes that suggest EGR and glow plug(s), which isn't such
a big deal.  It starts and runs a bit rough but I think it would be
easily sortable.  Decent shape otherwise though it has been salvaged or
wrecked like 3 times. I'm thinking this car and a AAA membership and
you'd be OK, once it gets sorted on the codes issues.

There ya go.
Sell the $500 606 turbo beater to Snook.
Those things get 30mpg at 80mph, don't they?

That's the one I bought from the estate sale, $1300. Haven't done anything
with it yet, sitting in the barn, I start it occasionally and it lights right
off. I drove it before I got it and the brakes were grinding and grabby but
worked, car ran very well except the throttle return spring is missing or
broken or something (which is interesting, I pulled one off the 79 300TD and
the 78 300CD has a different throttle linkage arrangement so it doesn;t seem to
be the same). I haven't even looked at it much yet due to some other issues.

The story is this woman owned it since like 1981 or so, it was her baby, She
died a coupla years ago, and the long-time BF would start it occasionally and
move it around the driveway and wash it, but she never let him drive it when
she was alive, so he never drove it after she couldn't drive it or after she
died. She kept it up in good shape, it was sitting under a carport so out of
the weather mostly. She had it repainted at some point after a storm knocked
down some branches or something and dinged it up a bit. It is white with black
leather interior, very minor damage to drivers seat, rest of interior looks
really nice. Some rust starting to show up under the side trim, you can see
where it is starting to discolor a bit, so there's that. Trunk seemed to be
leaking, I think probably the rear window seal so maybe some caulk would fix
that.

AC ran down, probably just needs a charge unless the seals are bad. Belt is
off but compressor seemed to spin so I don't know. Would probably need a set of
tires if you were going to drive it far or fast but they had good tread, just
likely old.

It's a pretty nice car actually, very clean and looks good from 20ft and
everything is there and straight. Runs, drives. I was thinking to BAT it
unless someone wants it.

Bring your trailer and haul it and the E$500 dizzel home, we could work
something out.

guessing it might take 15 to get up to 80MPH. Or will one these actually go

The brown/maroon 83 300D looks great. But, I'm not sure its going to get 28-20

For those who frequently drive longer distances in wet conditions, cost
would be a lesser factor in choosing tires relative to wet traction. If
this scenario fits you, then ask how good, not how expensive.

Cost about $230 installed for 225/65 R 16. That is about as cheap as
you can go without getting into cheep chine gofer um (or similar) tars.

We will see how they do over the next few years.

A capacitor tester, of course! My primary tester for these is my old
Heathkit IT-28, because it will do leakage tests at working voltage, and
the magic eye tube is good clean fun. After that I can use either of two
value testers, the GenRad 1657 Digibridge, or the HP 4277A LCZ analyzer.
In a way those are overkill, but they _will_ give you the capacitance value
and more importantly a quality rating related to their series resistance.
Some multimeters will read out bare capacitance, but the ESR and breakdown
voltage readings are almost more important. Or, for $1, just replace all
of the electrolytic caps with good new parts!

Thanks, I inherited an almost new resolder station I will keep at the
southern headquarters. I will try using it this winter if I ever get there.

Although, unplugging the idle form the IP and adjusting the idle speed
up on the IP cures the EDS problem adequately.

Dunno how you would measure capacitance, but replacement should be
do-able with the resolder station.

I have a 120VAC/12 VDC Power supply that has a loose capacitor to start
with.

them would be A GOOD IDEA if your OM603 has any idle quality issues or
kick-down switch issues.

"There are 5 Electrolytic capacitors on the EDS computer boards. On the 126
the EDS computer is located in the passenger kick compartment and requires
no tools to remove. Not sure about the 201 and 124.

4 phillips screws in the lid removes the boards which are clipped together.
Looking inside the 2 boards, you can see 2 heatsinks that are clamped to
some transistors on one of the boards. You will want to remove the 2
phillips screws holding the OTHER board to the main heatsink/plug assembly.
You can then lift it off and pivot backwards on the ribbon cable. There are
plastic clips that hold the 2 cards together, they simply unsnap.

Once you have the cards opened up like a book, the locations of the
capacitors are obvious and the capacitors are clearly marked. On the board
you didn't unscrew from the main heatsink/plug assembly, there are 4
capacitors: 100µF @ 50V Radial, 100µF @ 10V Axial, 22µF @ 40V Radial, 7µF @
63V Radial.

The board you unscrewed and pivoted out of the way has a single
electrolytic capacitor 22µF @ 16V Axial.

The circuit cards are double-sided, so be careful desoldering and
resoldering. I used 63V parts for all my replacements. 7µF is also not a
standard value, so I substituted a 6.8µF capacitor for it.

Out of all of my capacitors, only the 22µF radial was good (I replaced it
anyway). The next highest reading I got out of any of mine was .006µF In
Germany, they'd refer to that as "kaput".

computers from the 80's and 90's, maybe others).

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/389414-eds-elr-idle-issues-om603.html

BLUF (bottom line up front): There are a handful of capacitors in the
computer that die and probably are the source of much woe, and replacing
them would be A GOOD IDEA if your OM603 has any idle quality issues or
kick-down switch issues.

-

Re: [MBZ] Wasted oil change

2017-11-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Not really. Like any maintenance program, you've got to be committed to
entering the data. For things like fuel, since it's on my phone I just do it
when I fuel the car - easy. For maintenance items, I do it after I've done the
work.

If it's a repetitive operation, such as an oil and filter change, you can set
them up for repeats with reminders based on either mileage or time, or both.

With multiple cars as I have, if an operation is already in the database, when
you go to put a new instance in the program will attempt to replicate it if you
like, even if it was same thing you did only on a different car.

It will dump records to a .csv (MS Excel) if you like as well.

Wife, who is driving my primary work vehicle which I have poured a TON of money

scratch on the bumper of a bucket truck. Not sure if I can bring this one back

texting while driving.

It is to be the boy's first car. Stickshift. Not particularly valuable but
reasonably safe. And we already own it. He just turned 16. He's reasonably
interested in its fuel economy, as we've had him filling the other cars at the
gas station as practice. He was pretty shocked to 'discover' that it's pretty
much $50 a pop these days, and they happen fairly often---especially on the
wife's X5, which is now on its second engine, the first one apparently having
been worn out due to IMHO the excessive driving. He's becoming aware of how
long it takes to earn $50 down at his stratum.

[MBZ] Michelin Premiere Review was RE: Tires

2017-11-01 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Speaking of tires, I can now provide a review of the Michelin Premiere. I
have already put 7,000 miles on them. They are marketed for superior wet and
cold traction. I can report that based on my experience this is a valid claim.
My car had Michelins on it before and they were great. I'm not sure how many
miles they had as they were on the car when I bought them. But, they lasted a
VERY long time. I replaced them with some used Sumitomo and I thought they
were decent. I did apparently have an alignment issue and they were VERY fast
on the outside edge. I replaced them with the Premiere 2 months ago and have
driven in some nasty rain storms. They had MUCH better grip than both the
Sumitomo and the prior Michelin. I am curious how they will do in the snow.
I am still trying to locate a decent set of snow tires for my car. But, I
think these Premiere will do pretty well. My commute is 80-85 mph on the
interstate and there were several times I experienced a little
slippage/hydroplaning on the old set. But, these new ones have been excellent!
Some reviewers complain about road noise. But, I don't notice any excess
road noise. They are quieter than the Sumitomo and as quiet as the prior
Michelins.

Have your lift working in your shop? Maybe take some dimensional

Wouldn't want to waste time and $ on fixing that to find out that it cannot
