[MBZ] Cold air intake

2017-11-02 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I have a later style w124 fender on the wagon with a cold air intake vent.
I would like to use it for that. Currently I just have a cannister filter
sitting inside the fender, rather than the little plastic fitting with the
round hole that seals on the inside of the fender and feeds the stock
airbox. I guess I will try to buy the seal plate from mercedes.

I suspect that the na606 filter from the 1995 e300d is a bit under size for
my fuel level on the turbo 606 motor however, so perhaps I need to fab
something up and use the stock fender seal plate to feed a hose going to a
larger box.

Seems like maybe a 603 turbo filter would be bigger than a na606 filter. Is
the 603 filter box larger than the na606 box? And where does the 603 box
draw air from? The headlight? And is it wedged in behind the headlight like
the na606 box?

Thanks

BLUF (bottom line up front): There are a handful of capacitors in the
computer that die and probably are the source of much woe, and replacing
them would be A GOOD IDEA if your OM603 has any idle quality issues or
kick-down switch issues.

"There are 5 Electrolytic capacitors on the EDS computer boards. On the 126
the EDS computer is located in the passenger kick compartment and requires
no tools to remove. Not sure about the 201 and 124.

4 phillips screws in the lid removes the boards which are clipped together.
Looking inside the 2 boards, you can see 2 heatsinks that are clamped to
some transistors on one of the boards. You will want to remove the 2
phillips screws holding the OTHER board to the main heatsink/plug assembly.
You can then lift it off and pivot backwards on the ribbon cable. There are
plastic clips that hold the 2 cards together, they simply unsnap.

Once you have the cards opened up like a book, the locations of the
capacitors are obvious and the capacitors are clearly marked. On the board
you didn't unscrew from the main heatsink/plug assembly, there are 4
capacitors: 100µF @ 50V Radial, 100µF @ 10V Axial, 22µF @ 40V Radial, 7µF @
63V Radial.

The board you unscrewed and pivoted out of the way has a single
electrolytic capacitor 22µF @ 16V Axial.

The circuit cards are double-sided, so be careful desoldering and
resoldering. I used 63V parts for all my replacements. 7µF is also not a
standard value, so I substituted a 6.8µF capacitor for it.

Out of all of my capacitors, only the 22µF radial was good (I replaced it
anyway). The next highest reading I got out of any of mine was .006µF In
Germany, they'd refer to that as "kaput".

[MBZ] Special tool "Holder"

2017-11-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Well, I finally got the timer in. I cut a new "tool" out of 30 ga tin,
then RTFM, which sez to take out the upper pin for the lower chain guide
below the vac pump. I had missed/forgotten that step. With the thinner
tin and with the last pin out, the timer slid right in. (Like the book
sez it will)

Parts order from Tom H. should be in soon. Tomorrow I will make sure
everything works right without interference while turning it over a few
times, check/set der falfe clearance, put in the oel pump, pan etc. the
see if I can get the IP to line up in the right spline.

It is too freaking cold to be doing this. They have been promising 55º
but we get 38º

I should have everything finished within a day or two of getting the CC
order in. Have to put a seal in the PS pump too.

Is it one of the “switchblade” types of key fobs? Those are the ones that are
NLA at this time, although my dealer says that there are efforts being made to
put them back in production but they’re not sure when.

If it’s one of the teardrop shaped ones you’re good.

Depending on the type (metal or plastic) a replacement will set you back

Re: [MBZ] Beautiful Day

2017-11-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s taxed like a regular paycheck. No “ding” for being a bonus, or something
like that. It also goes towards our total annual salary, which increases the
average for your pension if you’re near retirement.

We have to take 40 hours a year, minimum, or lose it. That keeps people from
accruing huge amounts of time by retirement. You can still do it if you
started early. Sick time gets rolled over to the next year, but you can’t cash
it out when you leave. That means people get “sick” for several weeks before
retirement or separation. I did this when I left the school district, since I
couldn’t roll my sick time over to the County. I was “sick” for about 45 days
before I separated. For that time I was actually drawing two paychecks - one
from the school district and one from the County.

Kept me from losing all that accrued time. It’s just the way the game is
played. I would just as well they adopt the private sector PTO approach and be
done with all the shenanigans.

When I worked at the school district I knew people who had as many as 600 hours
of accrued vacation time, because the district didn’t have a payout program
like the County. A few ears ago they capped the maximum hours you could accrue
to 600, meaning that if you go over you lose those hours. The guy I knew who
had the 600+ hours just took off most of December every year so he wouldn’t
lose hours he had accrued that year.

Re: [MBZ] Beautiful Day

2017-11-02 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We recently transitioned to "flexible PTO" which means I can "take as much time
as I need" for any purpose that I want. I thought it sounded like a scam at
first and couldn't see what the company got out of it. Then they emailed me to
say that the PTO I had accrued would be paid out at the end of employment.
Thats when I realized the company's angle, they won't have to payout to any new
employees since those people won't ever accrue any time off...
Apparently studies show that people with FPTO tend to take fewer days off, I'm
not going to get caught with that...

We can "sell" unused vacation days back to the County if we have at least 80
hours.  I should have accumulated enough time this year to do it. It's like
getting an extra paycheck (2 weeks per pay period) a year.  That and if we
don't use sick time, we get credit for the first 32 hours converted over to
vacation time. That makes it easy to roll over sick time without using it...

Yes. We have two car washes that offer it. First it was Legends (which became
Zips) and the other one is Green Lantern. I think both companies have multiple
locations in the Midwest. My current plan costs $33 a month. It is exterior
only with free vacuums. It includes the wash, underbody wash, wax, and wheel
cleaner/tire shine. I can go through the wash as much as I want. For me as
long as I wash it 3 times in a month, it pays off. Last winter it was great
because I could wash it every other day to get the salt/sand off it. It’s a
black car, so it needs a frequent bath.

I guess Green Lantern is only KS and Missouri

Zips has many more locations: https://www.zipscarwash.com/locations/

Re: [MBZ] OM603 EDS/ELR computer repair - replace the capacitors or your pistons will MELT!

2017-11-02 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
There are types there that I don't recognize, and would have to look up -
technology keeps marching right along!

I can testify that you need to pay attention to the voltage rating. Back
when I was a novice licensed ham, I built a power supply for my
transmitting amplifier out of scavenged parts. The powers upply was feeding
450 volts to the tubes, but the filter caps I had were only rated for 400
volts. I figured that there was enough safety factor built in, so used
them. A few months later while I was using the station, I heard a loud pop,
smoke came roiling out of the power supply, and the room really stunk.
Those electrolytic capacitors had both blown the bottoms out and crap was
everywhere under the chassis. I had to break down and buy new ones, so got
some rated for 500 volts.

I too have spares for EDS and CC to rebuild. Will attack in the winter when I

capacitors for EDS, Cruise control, instrument panel for 126, (also 124 if
applicable) and other applications.

I also have the throttle body doojiggy (whatever it is that MB calls it) from
the M104 that needs 20-30 small wires WITH insulation replaced... It could be
resurrected sometime too with wires that are MW insulation, in place of
self-destructing insulation.

That's my plan, "spray and pray". I've got a spare EDS computer or two
around, I"m going to order the capacitors for this repair and the pre-glow
relay repair.

Does anyone know the capacitor type / value for the tempomat computer?

Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq

2017-11-02 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Around "Chaston" we got a bunch of old fops who like to wear bowties.
They seem to think it confers on them some sort of air of trustiness or
gravitas or something, but in general it just makes them look like fat
old dandies who are trying too hard.

Some dudes can pull it off though, like my doctor, whose family has
Chaston roots going way way back, so he is kinda grandfathered in on the
matter.  They own the paper too, so I guess that confers a bit of
respectability in some way.

Re: [MBZ] '63 Valiant cabriolet - last of the PB transmission cars

2017-11-02 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
My cousin had one of those Valiants with the push button tranny
shifter,  (coupe or sedan not a droptop) but it was white with red
interior just like that one, about the same year.  My uncle bought it
for him when he was not yet old enough to get a DL, so he kept it at my
grandparents' house.  I would stay with them summers in the country on
the farm.  They lived on a gravel road maybe 3/4mi long. He would get in
that thing and just beat the absolute sh*t out of it driving up and down
the gravel road, revving to redline then punching the shifter button to
let it go up one.  It was surprisingly quick (at least to me being maybe
12yo at the time, he was 14 or 15 I guess).  The thing just kept going
though.  He would run it out of gas down the road, we would have to walk
back to the house and either siphon some gas from my granddaddy's
tractor or talk him into running us into town to fill a can or two.
We'd go pick up pop bottles along the road to get the 3cent deposits and
get enough for a few gallons of gas, and our granddaddy might throw in a
quarter or two (gas being a quarter a gallon that wasn't bad), at least
until he found the tractor empty.

I got to drive it a coupla times too, that was a thrill, but he wouldn't
let me beat on it.  He was an aspiring drag racer or something.  He had
a succession of 60s muscle cars, SS396s and such, spent all his money on
the cars and street racing them with his buddies and tearing them up
(one of his SSs caught fire and burned up, I think it might have been a
Successful Fire though it almost incinerated his girlfriend who probably
dropped the cig down in the back seat during some, um, automotive
excitement) and getting into trouble with the cops.  After losing the SS
he borrowed his sister's Ford Torino and wrecked it, which really really
set her off as she actually had a decent job and needed the ride.  I'm
not sure how they ever resolved that, maybe they have not yet come to
terms on the matter.

He ended up becoming a cop (see how that works?) and in charge of the
motor pool (go figure).  After retiring from there he was manager at a
little branch bank in the little town he lived in, and got elected mayor
of it a coupla times.  He is a lot more sedate now, and really fat,
though I think he has had like 4 wives, the last one running off a few
months ago.  He's a good ol boy though, and fambly, so there's that.

Fond memories of that Valiant.

Aluminum electrolytics are, IIRC, by any functional measure the _worst_
capacitors out there.
But! They're plenty good enough, inexpensive, and small. They're the
design target of what
you're replacing. Almost anything else would _work_ better, but probably
wouldn't fit. (Most
of the aluminum electrolytics I've had to replace were _defective_, and not
representative of
the breed. Those wretched Frakos.) No reason to use anything else,
really, so long as you're
using a high-quality part.

Tantalum are rather pricey, but less likely to fail.

Except for the occasional, and highly spectacular, cases where they catch
on fire. Yes,
on fire. Literally. Seen it. Most especially if you install them
backwards, but I hear it can
happen even when installed correctly. Functionally they're excellent,
except for that. For
awhile we used them a lot, though they _are_ pricey.
