Clay,
The example city in my post is Phoenix, AZ, however, it has become like
every other city of size, a bastion of ignorant leadership and poor civic
planning. The examples you give for Seattle are repeated in every city, by
every "public works department" across the nation.

If you go to any federal park, you will see signs that say, "do not feed
the wild animals".. when you ask "Why not?" the rangers will tell you it
makes the animals dependent on handouts and they won't work for their food.
Cities apparently need to put up some of those signs adapted for humans
and social welfare programs...

I just read that we have around 3.8% unemployment now. Best labor market in 18
years! It seems almost anybody looking for employment will find something,
according to the MSM. I wonder why the 5k hobos occupying SEA are not on the
labor rolls if there are jobs going begging.

Automating transport and warehouse jobs will have a massive impact on labor.
There are so many jobs a robot can do much swifter and possibly more reliably
than a human. No need for healthcare or pensions either. What do we do with
all the redundant people? Soylent Green? Can’t turn them into fuel, because
all the cars are electric.

Nothing worse than letting a diesel sit or only go on short trips. Take it out
and flog the tar out of it.

Gump had sat for two years before coming to me. It took a few months of daily
driving to get her willing to at least try to to get close to her top speed.
Almost a 18 months before she could actually make 84.5 mph.

Good GOD, you do not live in Seattle, do you? This sounds just like the
nightmare scenario I meet every day. The things the hobos do on those bikes
makes me cringe when i see the tourist smiling away while pedaling along.

We have light rail, street cars, buses, and more lame excuses for transit that
get just enough ridership to keep the idiot politicians smiling. The streets
are clogged with Uber and Lyft goons who recklessly swerve around in traffic
causing near or real accidents. The drivers are not native born, I wonder how
they even understood the driver test questions.

No need to mention the LEOs who have no desire to Serve or Protect. When I
approach them with what should be solidly in their wheelhouse, they respond
with some version of “not my job”. Parking enforcement refuses to actually
enforce. They park in a manner that obstructs fire plugs, watch pedestrians
nearly become hood ornaments instead of directing traffic (for which they are
getting overtime pay), they do “undercover” surveillance in marked cars instead
of interceding in the hobos stealing electronics, dealing drugs and selling
underage hookers.

I was watching this whole mess, and came to the conclusion that the simplest
way to invade this nation would be to come in under cover of being homeless.
Set up tents upon sidewalks and streets, parks and freeway interchanges, keep
the weapons in RVs parked around town. Gather enough soldiers in this manner,
which the civilian population and LEOs will ignore, then, with a few thousand
invisible partisans, you take over the city and county.

Cant really disagree with any of that Curt.

I generally time flights into and out of LAX to avoid traffic. The billion
dollar hov lane on the 405 was a complete waste of money. What a
boondoggle.

There is a new tax to support mass transit but the housing development
always seems to happen before the transport infrastructure to support it is
in place. So gridlock will continue for a decade or more I imagine.

Anyway you are always welcome to stop by for a beer as we are pretty close
to that route if you take the 405.

Hi Max,

For now it doesnt seem like anyone is mandating the driverless stuff or
even collision avoidance. If people feel squeamish enough, the driverless
taxi/truck will flop despite the labor cost savings. It will be interesting
to see if it can survive, but I will bet that if it is good enough then
people will forget their qualms fairly quickly.

Freedom applies just as equally to people who select autonomous cars as it
does to people who do not. Reasonable people will differ on this. Several
years back I read an interview where a google testing engineer said that
his wife got nervous whenever he would take over the wheel from the
computer, because she felt safer with the computer.

For me, the labor implications are probably the biggest issue. What are
several million taxi drivers, truck drivers, delivery people etc supposed
to do for work when they are suddenly rendered obsolete by machines? It is
potentially socially destabilizing technology.

Anyway how many lives would this technology have to save per year per
100,000 people for the benefit to outweigh the downside of reduced
individual liberty? I would like to be free to use the freeway without
fearing immature, reckless and distracted drivers killing me. There are
probably far more of them here than in NC, admittedly, but that is why we

2018-06-01 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I took it out for a quick spin. Was smoking a lot on and off, running rough
then ok, not shifting well. I’m thinking that EGR is acting up or maybe the
vacuum is screwy on it or both. I’ll have to check it tomorrow. I need to do
the EGR bypass too, splice those wires to the sensor then disable it.

Or maybe it was a bad tank of fuel or something. I guess I need to fool with it
some more.

bad glow plugs but before it would start just smoke a bunch. I got a new fuel
filter but the one in the car was fine and fuel looked ok in the bowl so I left
it in there.

Today I got it to start after glowing and cranking a few times and it was
running pretty rough at lower RPM like below 3000 but fine over that. And
didn’t want to keep running at idle or up to maybe 2k.

I nursed it along a bit and it was belching smoke like it usually does at
start. It finally started running ok after a few minutes so I let it idle and
the smoke subsided too. (Good against the skeeters though). Seemed to be
running fine and smooth after sitting awhile then but I have not driven it yet
to see how it is on the road.

I’m trying to figure out what this might be. It didn’t have a lot of fuel in it
when I got it so I filled it up. It ran fine for awhile but then started
running poorly. I was thinking bad fuel or clogged filter but filter looked
fine. I don’t know if there is another one like a tank filter. Doesn’t look
like there is a clear one like on the 617 just the main canister filter.

I guess I’ll keep monitoring it and see what happens and try to think of other
issues. Bad or clogged injectors? Fuel pump? I don’t know enough about these
moderne things to think or look for other simple problems.

Any thoughts welcomed.

[MBZ] This 210 diesel

2018-06-01 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The other day it was not running well so I parked it. (Recall I had cleaned the
EGR when I got it and it would barely run and then it ran fine.) Tried to start
it a few days later and really did not want to start at all. It has a coupla
bad glow plugs but before it would start just smoke a bunch.

The very best noise canceling radio mic is the
Telex Turner Roadking RK56. None do a better job canceling noise,
or sound better. There is an Astatic and some Motorola that come
close. But in a truck cab so loud I would wear earplugs, I would
get the radio mic gain turned down enough and the RK56 would make
clean, intelligible audio for transmission.

Is the RoadKing headset as good? Probably not - but it still may
be good.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Elon Musk's very awkward moment...

2018-06-01 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I'm seeing an excellent example of the urban socialization in action here
with bicycles. The city spent multiple Billion$ of federal money
constructing a light rail system, which destroyed established businesses
along it's entire route, because the rail line down the middle of the
street blocks access to "the other side of the street" businesses. Then, to
encourage users of the "light rail" system to ride and actually get to
their business or work, bicycle stands were placed with rent bikes unlocked
and rented by smart phone. The bikes are yellow or green. After just a few
months, the homeless have found a way to unlock the "smart phone locked
bikes" and steal and strip them, or use them at will. Yellow and Green
bikes are now found in alleys being used as free transportation by the
homeless and addicted. The bike company is part of "public transport" and
now complaining about the upkeep cost and lack of traffic.
The "light rail" company has, after 3 years of operation, failed to make a
profit, and is unable to pay it's electric bill to run the trains. During
the 3 years, trains have hit, on average, one car per month, injuring many
occupants.
Someone made the decision to spend Billions for a system that, to date, is
a business failure.
In my considered opinion, self driving cars fall into that same category.
America is a country of individual freedom. In action, the "light rail" and
"self driving cars" both push against that base mind set. Ultimately, the
law of UN-intended consequences will bite them both.

Yep.

Wayta go! Good work!

I've been using a kmart imitation weber kettle I found on the curb maybe
20 years ago. had to buy a new lower grate for it a few years ago.
$15, I think. I seldom see good grills on the roadside anymore, but the
guy who runs a body shop and collects and crushes junk cars has a yard
full of SS gas grills that look good to me.

great big hole in the top of the burner. I could *probably* weld a patch in but

This is the point where I tried the new grill grates only to find them 1/2" too

So back to grillpartssearch.com where I bought the last burner. This time I bought the upgrade
"premium" stainless burner, new venturi tubes, new grill grates of the right size, a new
briquette rack and new ceramic briquettes. $150 which is 1/4 what the neighbor is paying for a
brand new Webber grill to be delivered "soon". Should take an hour or two to put in all
the parts when they arrive, I might even fix the ignitor while I'm at it, I never bothered to hook
it up when I got the grill...

Get good stuff, fix it when it breaks, pay less overall.

Re: [MBZ] Price drop. Poos better hurry

2018-06-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
BZZZT! WRONG!

The spring kit is NOT an “aftermarket cop out”. It was an option from Mercedes
for cars used in heavier service, such as taxis, and was delivered that way if
the car was ordered for that option. There were two different springs
available, one that was harder and increased ground clearance, one that was
softer.

From my W110 service manual:

110 329 05 01 - “intended for vehicles with increased ground clearance"
110 329 04 01 - softer spring for lighter loaded applications

The use of the spring predates the hydrocompensator, as the basic swing axle
design (starting with a spring and not a hydrocompensator) began in 1953 and
went through 1973. The Pontons used the swing axle and it had a spring.

Where’s Peter? He knows all this stuff.

[MBZ] gearwrench to the rescue (OM616 Rear IP Bolt)

2018-06-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
You may, or may not recall that I had trouble last fall getting the
bolt in the back of the IP on the 240D (123.123) I could get the bolt
up there, but there was no room to turn it with fingers or wrench to get
it started. I wrapped the bolt head in blue paper shop towel, and
stuck it in the gearwrench, and tore off the towel on the thread side.
with this, i could get the bolt up there, with one hand but still cold
not turn it. I got a paint paddle, and used it wedged against the
oelfilter housing to push on the head of the gearwrench so that it would
ratchet when I oscillated the handle a few degrees at a time. enough to
get a click or three on the ratchet.

I got the bolt in. All is well. While I was at it, I got the the new
(used) transmission exhaust hanger installed too. Now it is ready for
the road, except the autotrans is still weak in the 2-3 shift.

A Luxury Classic From Indiana’s ‘Little Detroit’

An executive’s time in Connersville, Ind., sparks a love for the
town’s automotive history and a car made there by industrialist E.L.
   Cord

/Jim Weddle, 64, the managing partner of Edward Jones, in St. Louis,
Mo., on his 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton, as told to A.J. Baime./

Forty-two years ago, my wife Stacey and I moved to Connersville, Ind.,
to open a branch office of the investment company Edward Jones. I had
been an intern at the St. Louis headquarters while getting my MBA, and
this was my first “real” job. I’ve been a car guy since I can remember,
and what we found in Connersville was not just a great community, but
what was to me an amazing automotive history.

In the 1920s and 30s, an industrialist named Errett Lobban (E.L.) Cord
built Auburn and Duesenberg cars in Indiana. In 1929, he set out to
build a car with his own name on it. Cord created a state-of-the-art car
factory in Connersville to produce Cord and Auburn cars. Historians have
called the small town Indiana’s “Little Detroit.”

When we moved there, my wife got a job at a company based in the old
Cord assembly plant and you could see where the assembly line had once
been.

Cord cars were luxurious and ahead of their time in terms of styling and
engineering. Unfortunately, the Great Depression had a devastating
effect on Indiana’s auto business. Auburn, Duesenberg, and Cord all
ended production during the Depression.
But the people of Indiana still celebrate these cars. We would see Cords
at July 4th parades in Connersville, and I remember saying to my wife
years ago, “Someday we are going to own one of those cars.”

In 1984, we moved back to Edward Jones’ headquarters in St. Louis. Ten
years ago, my wife and I fulfilled our goal of purchasing a Cord. We
found our 812 Phaeton through a classic car broker, for $200,000—top
dollar, but it was one of the best I have seen. E.L. Cord envisioned
this car to be a “baby Duesenberg.” Coincidentally, our car was built
during the final year of Cord’s production.

The car has front-wheel drive, retractable headlights controlled by
cranks on either side of the dashboard, and a V-8 engine built by E.L.
Cord’s Lycoming company. Our car had been restored before we bought it,
and it is a delight to drive once you figure out its quirks. Our
youngest son and his wife were driven from their wedding in our Cord,
and our grandchildren delight in riding in the back seat with Gramps and
Mimi.

Today, I have a collection of cars, but the Cord is a sentimental
favorite. At the end of this year I will retire from Edward Jones, and
traveling back to Connersville with this car is on my retirement bucket
list.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Elon Musk's very awkward moment...

2018-06-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
On the one hand I can't disagree with you on the safety front, our species is
singularly bad at accurately judging risk, look at all the people afraid to fly
but willing to drive for instance.
On the other hand I like driving and some joy would be lost should I not be
able to. Also how is a self-driving car going to deal with my cabin 3/4 mile
from the road?
As for heavy traffic, our poorly designed cities and lack of public transport
are largely to blame. When I go to LA I end up driving from LAX to Burbank
which takes too long in the best of times. I'd love to be able to take the
train but its so terribly inconvenient its actually easier to drive. Someday
when the rail extension to the airport is done it might be feasible, I look at
it each time I'm there and it seems like progress is being made but only when
measured against the fact that I've been making this trip for a decade, the
month to month progress seems to be essentially zero...

What matters is the overall performance across the population vs current

Ultimately the costs and benefits of these things will speak for

I’ve seen a number that don’t. Unfortunately, the paint is usually shot or
they need some sort of bodywork for repairs.

I’m not worried about surface rust underneath, but when I see deep rust on the
frame rails, rocker panels or in the back of the wheel wells, especially if the
undercoating is peeling off, I know there’s far more lurking there. That is a
big bag ‘o’ hurt.

They’re out there, believe me. I’ll find one, it’s just going to take a while.

I would seriously consider this car if it were priced properly. He’s got it in
the range of a near perfect car in today’s market, which it’s not. I’m not
keen about the shifter change, but that’s not a deal breaker. The exterior
looks pretty solid and all of the trim is intact. Can’t tell about the seals
and rubber, but that’s always going to be an issue on these cars simply due to
age. The interior looks pretty good, too.

But it’s not a $10k car in today’s market. And I believe the market is
speaking as he’s still got it.

The 1969 W108 280SE I saw on Long Island the other night was a $10k car. Low
miles, well maintained, had a few warts but nothing significant. It was sold
for $8500, but I believe the seller left money on the table.

I’ll guess that this car will continue to be in the Marketplace for a while.

Re: [MBZ] Price drop. Poos better hurry

2018-06-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not at their price. It’s a $6,000 car, maybe, with the stuff that’s goobered
up on it. That and the paint is pretty tired, but that’s not a deal breaker.

I pointed out that there was rust and the undercoating was peeling off as a
result and they said it wasn’t so. Whatever.

Doesn't get much more 'regular' than that.

Isn't the chassis an S210?

They're also auctioning a 1991 560SEC, for the 14th time.

2018-06-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl,

I think this comes down to individual liberty (and the responsibility that
goes with it) vs. the serfdom of handing over control to the "other".

Just like I don't want the government or the health insco deciding on my
healthcare options, I don't want to pay extra for people I've never met and
never will meet to completely control my car and my family when riding in
that car. I'd much rather take the risk and control my own life, than hand
over control.

A car is an immensely liberating invention. A car is hugely important for
individual financial success. In my case a dependable car is vitally
necessary for hurricane evacuation.

Yes, the bar is EXTREMELY high for an autonomous car to take over the job
that I can do just fine, thank you.
