Oh, and by the way, the storm surge at Tampa is expected to be 0.7 foot,
so it looks like Dan will be minimally affected.

I have been busy with Shirley in the hospital in Albuquerque due to a TIA
or seizure Saturday night. Today I got there early (0915) and was with
her most of the day. We did a lot of watching of The Weather Channel.

One of the things I noticed is that when Hurricane Michael goes across
the Carolinas and exits to the Atlantic Ocean, the counterclockwise
rotation of the winds will force the Atlantic's waters to the coast,
creating a storm surge in South Carolina with on-shore tropical storm
strength winds.

That is particularly concerning to Rich on John's Island, both for the
storm surge flooding his neighborhood and for the wind breaking branches
of his (live oak, I think) trees, causing them to fall down onto his
collection of Mercedes automobiles.

OK - the FreeNAS site says ti avoid RAID controllers at all cost - they
want to do it themselves. They go on about the "right" HBAs, NICs, etc. I

Re: [MBZ] IEA Outlook for Renewable energy

2018-10-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Maybe, it depends on the type of NG plant.

The BPA uses combined cycle gas turbine generation, I believe, which unlike
“simple cycle” plants take a few hours to spool up and generate electricity. A
lot of small municipalities in that part of the country have built peak power
plants with simple cycle gas turbines to peak shave, or address short term
loads on their distribution systems rather than let the BPA ding them for spot
market purchases.

Simple cycle plants are pretty much a stationary gas turbine driving a
generator. The exhaust gasses of the turbine are dumped into the atmosphere
without any sort of heat recovery. In a combined cycle system, that waste heat
from the gas turbine is used to boil water into steam and drive another
generator. The condensate from the second stage is recycled to be used again.

However, because they have hydro readily available, the BPA can address peaks
and significant demands on short order by just releasing more water. In times
of drought they tend to ding their municipal customers pretty hard for demands
above the baseline loads, too. That’s what makes the small plants economical.

Funny that you mention Freecycle, as that’s where I got the processor and
memory. I bought the motherboard and case.

Something I learned a long time ago - don’t buy cheap cases. I got tired of my
hands ending up like hamburger meat after working with $40 cases. For maybe
twice that you can get a case that’s far better and they even deburr all of the
edges.

2018-10-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
On rethinking the FFL issue, legally, it would be a private sale, thus NOT
subject to need for a a background check or any forms filled out.

I have a friend of many years who owned a number of pawn shops and was and
is an active gun collector.. on a number of instances he set up a folding
table down the sidewalk with a sign that said, "I'll pay more" every
cop knew him, which helped, and he was an FFL, but all the guns he bought
like that were "private sales".

[MBZ] IEA Outlook for Renewable energy

2018-10-09 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
RENEWABLESWorld could install 1T watts of clean energy by 2023Published:
Tuesday, October 9, 2018

The world could install more than a trillion watts of renewable power over
the next five years, more than the entire current generation capacity of
the European Union.

The International Energy Agency's latest annual report on renewables
forecasts as much as an extra 1.3 terawatts of clean energy will be
installed by 2023 under one scenario. Even in its more conservative central
forecast, the agency predicts that global renewable energy capacity will
grow by 1 terawatt, driven by a boom in solar installations and more
accommodating government policy.

The positive outlook for clean energy comes with a warning that government
support and market design is critical to ensuring that renewables continue
to be invested in and built.

Energy from solar, wind and hydro will continue to outpace natural gas and
coal over the next five years, the IEA said. Generation from natural gas
will be squeezed by cheap coal and ever more competitive solar and wind
technologies.

Despite renewable energy expanding its share of global electricity output
to 30 percent by 2023, growing coal generation in Asia means that the
dirtiest fossil fuel will remain the largest source of power in the world.

Hydropower is forecast to increase 12 percent over the next five years and
will still be the largest renewable electricity generation source by 2023.
Wind output is expected to increase its share by two-thirds to 7 percent.
Solar power is seen tripling, overtaking bioenergy to become the
third-largest source of renewable energy.

China will be responsible for 41 percent of global renewable growth, adding
438 gigawatts of clean energy to become the largest consumer of green
energy in the world, overtaking the E.U., the IEA said. Almost half of
Brazil's total power consumption will come from renewables by 2023, in
large part down to hydro and bioenergy.

The IEA focused on "modern bioenergy," saying it is the "blind spot" of the
renewables world even though it accounted for half of all clean energy
consumed in 2017. Most modern bioenergy, which includes liquid fuels
produced from plants, gas from anaerobic digestion and wood pellets, is
used to heat buildings in industry. It excludes traditional bioenergy,
which comes from biomass such as wood and animal waste.

"Modern bioenergy is the overlooked giant of the renewable energy field,"
said Fatih Birol, the IEA's executive director. "We expect modern bioenergy
will continue to lead the field and has huge prospects for further growth."

Only bioenergy that reduces life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions while
avoiding social, environmental, and economic impacts should have a future
role in a clean energy system, the IEA said.

Global carbon dioxide emissions from energy use climbed 1.6 percent in 2017
after three years of little change.

Coal currently feeds about 27 percent of the world's energy demand. That
proportion is likely to drop to about 22 percent in 2040 as governments
move toward cleaner energy policy, according to the IEA's last World Energy
Outlook in 2017. The agency's next global report will be published in
November. *— Jeremy Hodges, Bloomberg*

Just a generic PC I built out of parts. Basic i7 processor I had laying around,
although you could certainly use something less powerful. Motherboard with a
RAID controller, 12GB of RAM, four 2GB hard drives, two 1GB hard drives and a
128GB SSD for a boot drive (again, major overkill but I had it on the bench.)
The hard drives came out of my “failed” Drobo and have been working just fine.
I think I’ve had one failure of a Toshiba drive and it was still under warranty.

With a ZFS encrypted RAID 5 array I think I have around 6GB of space or
thereabouts.

Hot swappable drives, serious security and redundancy, based on a FreeBSD
kernel, this thing has been rock solid since I built it.

I’ve had media stuff on it, specifically Plex, but no one in the house really
seemed interested in using it, so I blew it away and recovered the space for my
Time Machine volume.

Re: [MBZ] OT - desktop hard disks

2018-10-09 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
My WD Mycloud Mirror 8 TB NAS has been running for nearly 4 years without any
problems. Bonus...it runs the DVR software for the network so I don't need to
keep a PC running for that. When I bought it from the Wimmen Warriors I paid
less than the cost of the 2 drives, so I'm content with the result so far. No
doubt YMMV.

What hardware are you running it on?
I mistakenly thought that new hardware meant to be NAS would run a long
time. In reading reviews, it w=seems that too many are finding that the
lower end Synology, QNAP, and WD NAS boxes are lasting just about three
months!
