I don't think Floyd is saying 4WD is bad - just that the it seems
a lot of people seem to think. "The car has 4WD, so I don't have
to slow down, or drive more carefully just because there is snow.
The 4WD will means I can go anywhere at any speed!"

I find it interesting that during a recent snow here I had to
drive in it - and I saw about 6 vehicles in the ditch - 5 were
four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Since I _know_ the
mechanicals improve the performance is those conditions, it sure
suggests its the loose nut behind the wheel that is the source of
the problem.

It's not fun for the driver either. And if you have never been in
that seat, it is hard to understand.

A common scenario viewed from the truck that is passing:
Due to max power or nannies the top speed is limited. This other
truck is slower - sometimes just a bit, others times enough to be
annoying. He is doing his best. Foot to the floor, figuring
eventually the pass will be complete. But to stay behind can mean
a forced downshift - and possibly that downshift could mean 10 MPH
at the top of the hill. And the driver is usually paid by mile -
not hour. And so what if it gets in the way of a "4-wheeler"
(cars and pickups with 4 wheels - as apposed to "big trucks" or
"18"s) - they are just a nuisance to the pros anyway.

Then the truck being passed:
Due to max power or nannies the top speed is limited. He is doing
all he can to go as fast as he can. Can't get a "running start"
on the hill because of the top speed limiter. And on this slope
(a hill from the view behind the big steering wheel, but the cars
may not even notice it's not flat) the truck is _just_ holding in
this gear at this speed. And someone is passing - slooowly. He
could slow down - but even a two second gap in the power will
require a downshift. And that could mean 10 MPH or so slower for
the rest of the hill. So if that fellow wants to pass that's fine
- but don't expect him to "sacrifice" that much just to help out
the "4-wheelers"

Just a glimpse of the view from the perspective of the driver.

Another 1/3" and we will have shattered the all time record for

The newest use "COBB" LED lights, which are very bright.

I have a version of the solar powered motion sensor lights on two houses.
The ones I choose have a separate solar pack which is mounted remotely from
the light. That arrangement gives much more in choices for location of the
solar e portion. Wire runs from the solar pack to the light.

Been in continuous use for over a year. No issues. Solar pack feeds the
battery pack, which feeds the lights, which are mounted to give
illumination for the security cameras, which are also motion activated,

What's central Florida, 30' above sea level?
Hmm, it says MCO is 96' and SFB is 55'.
KFPK is around 890', so there's a little bit of climbing involved.
But I still got 28mpg driving the W116 home from the coast at Port Charlotte.

We used to get our fair share ( or more, depending on your point of view)
of snow and ice here in OK, but it's been years now since we had enough to
get excited about. I learned to drive from my father, who grew up in MN.
Snow and ice was part of the curriculum. I taught our kids to drive in OK,
but always took the snow/ice opportunities to teach them. Our youngest had
my driving course, then wen to grad school at MI Tech where there are
steeped hills than we have around here (Houghton, MI) along with LOTS of
snow. He took the opportunity to take a snow/ice driving course through the
school where he mostly got more experience sliding in a controlled
environment, and learned the value of proper snow tires.

When I first heard about the Volt, I figured it was the worst of both worlds.
Worse fuel economy than a Cruze on the hwy running on gas, not enough battery
range to be a viable electric car.

But in talking to people who own them, it works in practice. They charge it up
when they're home, let it run in hybrid mode when it's low on charge, and even
with some extra running on the gas engine just to keep it active they get over
200mpg not counting the cost of electricity.
Even on a long trip, like 1200 miles to Florida, I bet I could get over 45
miles per gallon in a 2nd generation Volt. Run electric for the first 50 miles,
let it recharge some on the downhills in Kentucky and Tennessee, and finish
with the battery at 20%.

Be sure you place the panel in a location that gets sun all hours of the day.
Around my home the idiots toss the lights up where they want light, not where
sun will be. Magic misunderstanding of how the things work, so they must
function because the sun is out, even if the thing is placed in shade all day
long.

Guy up the street covered his roof with solar panels. Must be able to generate
3kW if they were not shaded by massive trees but for high noon. Solar water
heater is equally occluded.

Socialized medicine will almost always default to the least cost method, no
matter if it actually results in effective care. Healthcare is a business
now, not a calling. Probably related to young doctors who are have little
exposure to real v. book knowing.

Just my $0.02 from watching the rapid decline in medical care my 89 year old
mother received since 2008. The old school docs have cashed out, selling to
conglomerates and bottom line.

Plug in cars are great for markets like Seattle and other clogged road urban
areas. The things will not need to power while they are trapped in gridlocked
highways or city street. They will not get you where you want any faster than
a petrol car.

I can make it the five miles to downtown in 20 minutes on a really good day.
If (always) traffic is at a standstill, it takes 45 minutes to an hour and a
half. Fuel gets burnt hoping somebody will be able to move a few feet. The
plug in car will end up sucking electrons for just as long in traffic to run
the AC and other gewgaws keeping the occupants distracted.

We are getting no new power plants and the stupid greenie idiots want to take
out the Snake River dams. I am not sure what energy those produce. I know the
Elwah and one out of Skamania County did make electrons for our grid. Both are
now gone, so the fishies are safe for the Norther Pike to gobble down
anadromous salmons. We may have another forest of bestilled wind turbines
being planted in the coming decades. I think the one out in Eastern Washington
SWMBA got a permit for ten years ago is finally coming online.

My truck has the electric locker in the rear differential. My previous
one had the clutch pack in the differential that would engage when
needed. I have rarely needed the locking differential. I try not to get
myself into situations where it  would be needed.

Anti lock brakes and traction control help too in winter, but when it is
really slippery, nothing works better than just slowing down.

Re: [MBZ] SNOW!

2018-11-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes

At camp a couple weeks ago they forecast 6" of snow, we got a solid 8", made
the camp road "interesting", this is outbound, about halfway to the main road.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4886/32089597238_2fab11df2e_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4808/32089597268_65332422cd_b.jpg

This is most of the way out, if you look careful the road goes down another 150
yards or so and turns right. The picture is from the top of a small hill. About
halfway to the turn Eric stuck his Chebby pickup. We usually tease him for
driving too fast in the woods, well this time he was driving too slow. The snow
had drifted about 18" and as he wasn't carrying any speed he couldn't make it.
I yanked him out with the Dodge. I've got more aggressive tires (General
Grabber AT II) and a little more clearance. It was hard getting him out though.

This is the first time in the 30 years I've been going to camp we had this much
snow, it was cold too, the night after the snow it got down to 4F.
We actually plowed out the dooryard:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4900/31126051907_8ff6aa9e36_b.jpg

That old 7hp Cub Cadet did the job but just barely, if the snow had been wet or
there had been any more it wouldn't have made it. I need to rig a weight box
for it...

They were predicting another 5 inches of snow on Thursday night so Thursday
morning we skedaddled. It just started snowing as I got home...

We have a couple in our back yard (not exactly like the one in your
link) and they work well. Even in the cold they seem to be able to
maintain their charge. They have been out for a couple of years so far
and are still working. The ones that we have use a separate charging
panel with a cord that connects to the light panel. That permits one to
put the charger where the sun will shine on it and the light unit in a
darker spot under the eaves etc. The only issue I have had is with the
plastic mount for the charging panel breaking off. Quite fixable as it
is not the charging panel itself that breaks but still a bit of an
annoyance.

Well, in this case it was German commies - not Russian ones, so that
explains the nice appearance. It seems they copied the engine from the
first Saab Sonnet - three carbs and higher compression. The flat rate for
an overhaul of the Saab engine was 8 hours, including R&R.

I disagree with that statement. I have seen some little blonde Russian

We had the coldest Thanksgiving on record, and then on Saturday another 2"
of rain which brings the D.C. yearly total to 60", or 20" above normal.
Another 1/3" and we will have shattered the all time record for
precipitation. All this rain is NOT good for the Chesapeake Bay
oysters... They are also forecasting a snowy winter here, and if current
patterns prevail I believe it.

Re: [MBZ] Quote without comment

2018-11-26 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

Let me tell you a story about diagnosis by computer.

My younger son (30 yrs old) was not feeling well about 3 weeks back. His
neck was sore and he had a rash from his hair down his forehead and his
one eye was bothering him. We saw him on Sunday afternoon and told him
that he needed to go and get it checked out and he agreed. He stopped
into the clinic he normally goes to near his home and asked to see the
doctor that he has seen before. That doctor was out but there was
someone else that he could see. He met with a lady doctor and told her
his symptoms. He said she typed his symptoms into the computer and then
told him he had pulled a muscle in his neck and to take some Tylenol and
take it easy for a few days to permit it to heal.

He did not feel any better that evening and when he told us what the
doctor said, we told him he needed to see someone else and get another
opinion. He went to the clinic I normally go to and managed to see my
doctor who was doing walk in visits that day. My doctor took one look at
him and told him he had shingles. He gave him a prescription for
antibiotics intended to prevent it from getting any worse and sent him
to an eye clinic here in the city as he was concerned about it being in
his eye. He then went to the eye clinic where the doctor looked at it
and then sent him to one of the main hospitals here to see a specialist
as he was concerned that his cornea was lifting. He then went to the
hospital and the doctor checked him out and told him it looked to be
alright but gave him his card with his cell phone number and told him to
call if he thought his condition was getting any worse.

So, he managed to see 3 good doctors within about 5 hours including 2
specialists but the first woman he saw did not do him any favours by
asking her computer to diagnose his problem.

He has pretty well recovered from the shingles but was off work for a
week and still has some residual affect from it.

1. The academic, who only walks on concrete, lives in a people dense city,
who thinks his/her/its' view of the world is the only correct thought
possible.

2. The rest of the world, who walks on dirt, grows things planted and
nurtured by hard labor and sweat, lives in a low people dense area, and
actually sees the stars in the sky at night, instead of glaring electric

Good comment: Batteries how do you store all this solar energy, car

Those 17mm bolts can be a tight reach, not a lot of room to swing a wrench
and the top bolt is hard to see at all. I use a 3/8 drive ratchet and a
short length of pipe to get more torque. Once you've got them loose, you
may have room to get a universal joint into the mix so you can get a wider
swing and get them out faster.

Domestic oil drilling is not OPEC anyway. And there is a LOT of
industries that use coal and oil that is NOT the consumer car.
I really don't think train and ship can effectively be re-fitted
with plug-in electric. Maybe the author is expecting the return
of tall ships. A 4 masted square rigged, steel hulled vessel can
transport a lot of freight. I'm not sure it fits well with
shipping containers, though.

Or plug-in electric tractors? I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm
saying it's not "just around the corner" as this author suggests.
The author seems to be aware only of "cars" and "the road I drive
on to work". The world is bigger than that.
The USA, by producing, has already trumped OPEC. If it was not for the
goobermnt wanting to preserve the house of Saud, OPEC would be history.

Err. Right. Maybe back when there was a refrigerator and a

Not so long as the power companies exist. The last thing they want is
distributed uncontrolled production. They have fought, and will

it is to "sell it back to the grid." "The man" wants to dictate the

One more point needs to be addressed IMHO, he wrote:

I'm pretty sure Doctors do the diagnosing. Nurses provide treatment as
directed by doctors and doctors order tests then interpret them.

Also, I predict self driving cars will fail in most of the country, only
succeeding in high density urban areas IMNSHO.

YMMV,

Jackstands under lift pads
crawl under from the front.
remove 2 bolts at starter  17MM take a breaker bar and a ratchet. I
used 1/2" drive.
Turn tires to allow the starter to slip out from underneath, clearing
the tierod, arm, centerlink.

Inspect driveshaft flex disks while you are under there.

It takes maybe 30-45 min.   Mine took considerably longer cause I had
to go to FLAPS for terminals and HF for a crimper, then put the
terminal on.

How much trouble was the R&R of the starter?
Mine's OK as far as I know, but I like to plan ahead ;-)

Thanks,

You're thinking too logically.  Can't do that with the Greenies.
Remember the good old days of $1 cans oof R12?  ;-)

Scientists have proposed a new method to fight global warming:
sun-dimming aerosols released into earth’s atmosphere.

Research from scientists at Harvard and Yale universities was recently
published in a journal called Environmental Research Letters which
proposes using a technique called stratospheric aerosol injection to
fight against climate change. The proposed technique would see
scientists launching sulfate particles into the Earth’s lower
stratosphere at altitudes up 12 miles high.

Currently, the technology exists but there are no aircraft suitable to
carry the particles and “developing a new, purpose-built tanker with
substantial payload capabilities would neither be technologically
difficult nor prohibitively expensive,” the researchers stated. The
researchers have estimated that it would cost $3.5 billion to launch a
system in 15 years time and would cost $2.25 billion a year to
maintain over the course of those 15 years.

Hmm I wonder if that 10W60 was to minimize a oil burning issue?
