Re: [MBZ] no cranky 87 td

2018-12-03 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Finally got a hammer down there to bang on it. That did the trick! Fired
right up. Man the new brakes are awesome. Of course the claw on the hammer
pulled the transmission and vacuum shutoff lines off the injection pump, so
after I drove the front end up on the leaning towers of lumber pyramid
scheme, it wouldnt shut off.

Headlight bulb is now out on the left side, and my glass is all pitted
anyway. I thought I had new hella lenses coming from Latvia but apparently
they want a bank transfer or something.

Passenger seat is all recovered after epic sessions with the instrument
panel removal tool and a million little white clips. Just need to cut some
holes in the cover for headrest and arm rest, which has me measuring twice
and cutting once. I will drop this seat onto the drivers side adjuster,
then pull my old drivers seat to swap the non memory motors into sportline
frame #2

I got a seat heater harness out of Russia, so that will have to go in
sometime with a new console wood.

Water to air setup is pretty much together. It will get welded into the
intake after some creative amputation with the table saw. I am trying to
find some thin little curved radiators to fit under the bumper cover. The
yzf1000r radiators are the only curved ones I know of, but they are curved
a bit too much I think. No air to air as I am keeping the ac.

Got some sportline rear shocks out of the fatherland. There were only 3
left. Tried to find the Sachs part number but nothing listed. I think it
was discontinued long ago. The regular s124 ones are still obtainable from
Sachs in a couple of flavors fyi.

Oh yes and the air no longer blows hot for some reason. Need to sort that
out.

Joys of old car ownership. At least the s123 is fully sorted. Man that
thing is just nice. They should all get the new steering box, new head, new
turbo and new transmission treatment. About the only things not new are the
halfshafts and rear subframe bushings. Maybe a 15" wheel upgrade and Gen 2
126 brakes would be nice.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in about the w124 no start. Thinking of
replacing the neutral safety switch on general principal. Bushings are
quite loose.

I’m betting the solenoid is stuck or hung up. once this brute force

Re: [MBZ] M112 cylinder numbering

2018-12-03 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

My 2003 ML was running very unhappily this weekend, like it was missing 2-3 of
its cylinders. After 3/8 mile it put on a CEL so I turned around and went home.

After seeing the crappy spark current traces on a Snap-On Soleus scanner, I
figured it was time to get rid of the unknown age spark plugs and see if that
cleaned it up. Coils are $50 each and a plug wire set is over $100.

It's running OK now after I cleared all the codes, so I wonder if the ECM shut
off the cylinders that were throwing too many misfires. I wonder how old the
plugs are, and if I could have saved any fuel if I'd replaced the plugs 3000
miles ago when I bought it. 20-22mpg hwy is the best I ever got out of it.

Rock is selling Autolite XP3924 Iridium plugs for $4.15, and Autolite has a $3
rebate, so I figured that was a decent deal on a car I have to buy 12 plugs
for. They started charging sales tax, so the tax exceeded the 5% coupon code I
used. Maybe I should have just bought them on Amazon for free shipping.

The first US built cars with the Ecotec engine were the 2000 Saturn L series.
Midway through 2003 they put bigger chain oiling orifices in them. You could
buy an upgrade kit with new chain, tensioner and oil orifice for around $100
IIRC. Fatty seemed mostly mad that nobody told him he needed the upgrade kit
until it was too late.

Fatty's mom had a stick shift L series Saturn IIRC, and she apparently drives
like me.
The problem was, if you didn't wind the engine up high enough to hit max oil
pressure, you didn't put enough oil on the chain. It was hard to do with an
auto transmission, but if you had a stick and shifted at 2000 rpm, and didn't
do much high speed driving, you could kill the chain in about 80,000 miles. I
think MamaFatty got 80-90k out of hers.

Anyway the first three years of 2.2L Saturns and the same engine in the Alero
and Grand Am were susceptible. The Cavalier/Sunfire got the engine as an option
in 2003, so some of the early J bodies had the problem too. Stick to 2004 and
later model years and you don't have to worry about it.

I've got the same engine in my stick shift 2007 Saturn, and drive like a
grandmother, but there's nothing wrong with the engine after 219k, the last 33k
driven by me. But mine came with the high volume chain oiler, I only use
synthetic oil, and it's geared to do 2700 on the highway. I think the early
ones were geared taller.

The test kit is supposed to turn blue when you expose it to meth.
It's not all that reliable in doing that, but it does reliably turn blue when
you expose it to...blue food coloring. The substance in question was a huge
plastic bag of blue cotton candy, for crying out loud.

But the best part, after the testing was complete two months later, the

I don't know, my neighbors had a Volvo 240 with 250k on it and what appears to
have been the original belt.

Just have to change them when they are due.

I've had a few cars with them, and the only real issue was a defective
tensioner that flew apart on my Audi Fox in the middle of the night in the
middle of nowhere -- should have done what the manual recommended and replace
the tensioner with the belt.

Will probably do the next one in the Golf, hopefully will be retired by then.

They do like their Toyodas, don't they?
The one next door drives a Xbox and a Taco. No, scratch that, when the
transmission blew in the Tacoma last year (which didn't have that many miles on
it), he said he didn't fit in the new Tacos and bought a full size Toy Pickup.
He was not happy, because he was getting ready to dump the Scion which had over
200k on it, and that got put off until he pays off the new truck, he doesn't
want two payments at once. He just barely fits in the Xb after having the
drivers seat relocated, it looks like a clown car with just one person sitting
in it.

Now I'm waiting to replace a rear wheel bearing until I can find a replacement

Bearing failure or maintenance failure?
Most timing belt issues are maintenance failures, but I remember a friend of
mine complaining that her 87 Escort broke its belt at 35k miles and less than a
year of almost all freeway driving. Yes you're right, that's not normal, but
the warranty expired 23,000 miles ago so you're stuck. At least the 1.9L
Escorts weren't interference valve trains.

Thanks Greg!  There are lots of good MB part in thingverse.  4 pages of
em, including the CC cable adjuster, it sez for 116, but I'm sure it
fits many other models of that era.

Now I need to look for or design the Little plastic bippy that goes in
the throttle linkage on the 240Ds.  I have access to printers in the
summer at the Fablab.

The 107 visor clips have been ridiculous or unobtanium for years.
Someone started making them in the back yard or garage and selling
online, so they are only $10-15 per pair now.  Still stupid prices for 2
little prastic bits, but far better than unobtainium.

A frisky E-mobile like a Spark or a Bolt excels at both. (but I heard something

Re: [MBZ] Subaru

2018-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Maybe recently but for a couple decades if you wanted a boring toaster of a
car you bought a Camry or for something slightly "sporty" an Accord.
The Prius is more for those who want a smug toaster...
A guy I work with has a Prius and drives from San Diego to LA for work, thats
like 100 miles each way. He groans when I point out a Jetta TDI would get
better mileage since most of that distance he's cruising on the highway. The
only time the Prius would do better is sitting in traffic...

Re: [MBZ] Subaru

2018-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Probably you can put 10,000 miles on the Subaru and sell it for nearly what
you paid for it too. The big depreciation is done, it probably won't decline
much now.I was considering one as a replacement for my Jetta but I can't
stomach the mileage hit. They're mostly rated <30mpg, I can't handle the idea
of going from 55mpg to 30...

Re: [MBZ] Subaru

2018-12-03 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I had had two w124s and a w123 sold while I literally on my way to see them.
Then there was a week or 10 day dry spell and needed wheels. My thought on this
2004 Outback is I’ll drive it some, get it reasonably sorted while searching
for a w123 or a w124. Then I’ll have the Subi sitting in the garage as an
incentive for boy child to try to get his shit together.

I read a study that suggested the #1 car in the homosexual set was the Toyota
Camry. I wonder if thats offset by men owning those, sure seems like a lot of
lesbians drive a Subaru wagon. We're friends with a lesbian couple that has one
and a Volvo wagon, I tease them for being "driving stereotypes".

If anyone wants to read a really good story on targeted marketing, study up on
how Subaru purposefully targeted the lesbian community after they discovered
their products were popular with them (after their marketing people couldn’t
get the products off the ground with any other segment of the market, I would
add.)

It’s pretty interesting.

2018-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Maybe he is and maybe he isn't but boy he said some stupid stuff.

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our
air and water that are doing it."

"Bank failures are caused by depositors who don't deposit enough money to cover
losses due to mismanagement."
and my personal favorite: "My friends, no matter how rough the road may be, we
can and we will, never, never surrender to what is right."

When Biden was proposed as VP and people were all talking about the dumb things
he's said I went back and checked on Dan. Uncle Joe has said some pretty stupid
stuff: "Folks, I can tell you I've known eight presidents, three of them
intimately." but he really can't hold a candle to Quayle.

It's just like hunters. The ones who merely go through a hunter safety course
because it's required, or the cops who only know about guns what was force fed
to them at the range, aren't all that competent with firearms. The cops who
know how to properly handle firearms already knew before they became cops.

A woman I went to high school with, her teenage son killed her husband. They'd
been hunting and the kid was unloading his gun. How in the world do you point a
gun at your dad's chest, especially when manipulating that gun's controls? If I
had pointed a toy gun at my dad at half that kid's age, I would have lost
access to it for at least a month.

If you're raised like I was, you just don't allow the dangerous end of a
firearm to sweep over other people unless you think they might need to be dead.
That's the 'gun culture' that some people in this country are determined to get
rid of.

Some LEOs (a clear majority in major cities), are as safe with a gun in public
as I'd be if you gave me a two day familiarization course with elephants and
asked me to drive one through town. These are guys who didn't even have BB guns
when they were kids, and it's hard to get them to the point where doing it
right is an ingrained response.

That cop from Wyoming in the Youtube video I linked, he seemed to have the
basics down, I can't fault the way he handled his sidearm in front of the news
camera, but he bought a dangerously stupid piece of equipment that didn't
protect the trigger, and then he grabbed his gun through the fabric of his
pants and pulled up on the trigger. Boom, negligent discharge, here's your
citation for disorderly conduct and public endangerment. Your Lee Paige
Achievement Certificate will come in the mail later. (or, since he wasn't using
a proper holster, should we give him a Plaxico Burress Award?)

The dancing FBI agent who was mentioned in passing in that video, his holster
didn't have sufficient retention to hold the gun securely while doing a
backflip. That's a problem, but the real problem was the moron who, upon seeing
that his holster dumped his gun on the floor, grabbed it and pulled the
trigger. He didn't make the common mistake of grabbing a dropped gun in midair,
but the end result was the same. I think he was rushing to get it out of sight
before anybody noticed he dropped it.
Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D Parts -

2018-12-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
OK, here you go:

In October of 1996, I walked into the Parts Department at Precision Motorcars,
now MB of Tampa. I made sure I was speaking with a wholesale parts guy, to
which I said:

“I buy between $2,000 and $5,000 worth of parts annually. I would like to spend
that money here rather than spread it around between sellers on the Internets.
What can you do for me?”

He immediately took my personal information and set up an account with a
wholesale discount (approximately 25% off list) that I receive on all the parts
I buy plus any swag the dealer sells in their little “boutique”. 22 years
later and that parts guy retired earlier this year. His “replacement” is a
woman who has worked the counter there for longer. There are two other parts
people who have been there as long that know who I am as well. They treat me
very well, as I respect their efforts and time and make sure the corporate
brass get a letter every couple of years expounding on the excellent job they
all do for me.

The parts people have given me access to a number I can text my parts lists and
orders to. This is nice, as it eliminates all the phone chatter and increases
accuracy. If I have needs and don’t know numbers, I give them the last 8 of
the VIN and a description and I’ll have a response texted back to me usually
within an hour.

I also make sure all of my parts orders are “stock orders”, meaning that they
come in 2-4 business days after ordering. The dealers get a spiff from
Mercedes for stock orders that saves them money on shipping and applies to
their monthly quota of purchased parts. This is an important metric for the
dealers. When I need something “VOR” (next day) they gladly do this for me at
no extra charge, as they’re way ahead of the game with the stock orders I place.

That’s it.

Oh, yeah - in the next week or two I’ll pop in at lunch time with 2-3 large
pizzas for the people on the parts counter. Inside the lid of each will be a
“thank you” message from me.

-D

GASTONIA, North Carolina -

Gaston County resident, Jasper Smith, 62, was arrested yesterday on
felony charges of manufacturing and distributing homemade “energy
drinks” containing the powerful stimulate methamphetamine. The Gaston
County drug task force raided Smith’s tree fort (Smith lives in 200 sq.
ft. tree fort on his brother’s property near Chapel Grove) to find
Jasper wearing only an adult diaper and reading a Mexican pornographic
magazine.

Police seized approximately 25 2 liter bottles of Smith’s “energy drink”
found in a cinder block pump house on the South Gastonia property. The
bottles tested positive for methamphetamine.

Smith came under suspicion when he sold four bottles to several Hunter
Huss High School girls who hours later were checked into Gaston Memorial
Hospital with internal bleeding. The girls parents phoned Gaston County
authorities.

A police report contained several statements from Smith:

“They’re just energy drinks like RedBull or Monster. It’s not meth in
there. It’s just lemonade, caffeine, sugar and a couple drops of
gasoline. I swear to God I didn’t put meth in there.”

Customers would come to Smith’s Gastonia home to buy the energy drinks
for $20 per bottle. One customer spoke on the condition of anonymity:

“I’m shocked Jasper put crank in his energy drinks. I didn’t know
nothing about that. I just knew they worked good to keep me awake for a
couple days. Stuff way better than Monster [energy drink].”

Hours after Smith’s first statement, he confessed:

“Okay, I put just a little meth in there to get them addicted and keep
customers coming back. I know they’ll all testify against me so let me
make something else clear: I pissed in every bottle.”

Smith also faces child endangerment charges in Gaston County for
‘poisoning’ the girls who drank his homemade concoction.

one they would like to part with or know where I can get a used one? I am
checking local junk yards. Any color will do.

Also looking for:
Gas/oil filler cap.
Yellow vacuum check valve for door lock system.
Hood Pad - with or without heat shield.
Center driveshaft support with bearing and bearing if not included.
Transmission filter and gasket - Autohaus has two listed, a Meyle and a Mann.
Mann is about $7.00 more and gasket must be ordered separately. Thoughts?
Clear fuel filter(s)
Canister fuel filter(s)

Update on condition - It is running well and going down the road straight and
true. Not stopping as well as it should.
Put new rubber brake lines on all 4 wheels and new pads on the front. The
front pads were soaked with what looked like brake fluid. installed new
caliper on left front. ( it was in the trunk) Did not see any leaks around
other calipers.
Working on vacuum system -
Brakes feel like vacuum assist is intermittent.
Shifting is erratic as well.
Discovered broken line to door locks. Will test drive after that is sorted out.
I’m sure more parts will be need as time goes on.

In my W123 wagon (1983) there is a plastic box in the engine bay which has

Thanks. Ideally, it will be no more than 43" tall so I can fit it under my

Nixon always had what appeared to be a permanent 5 o’clock shadow. Got a
picture around here of him shaking my Dad’s hand at some event, I don’t think
it was at the same breakfast. Dad was heavily involved in the local party
workings as a precinct committeeman among other things. His former business
partner ended up becoming Lt. Governor of Indiana and later president of Lilly
Endowment (+$10B in assets). Now one of my older brother’s classmates, Clay
Robbins, is chairman of Lilly Endowment. Big brother did the “Young
Republicans” crap for a few years to further his career. Not my sort of thing,
I would have just pissed off all of the old rich white ladies who were involved
with it for lack of anything better to do.

Meyle used to be pretty good stuff.
Now it's just another name you find on generic parts.
Up to you to determine whether Mann is worth $7 more than generic.
Seems like somebody said Mann only on one of the transmission filters, but I
don't remember if that was W123 or W124.

Rock Auto has Motorad fuel and oil filler caps for about $2 each. I assume
they're 'good enough'.
Gates and Stant for a bit more $$$.

If you're ordering from Rock you can get Mann oil filters for $7 or Champion
Labs for $4.40.
And Mann prefilters are $20 for a bag of ten. Seems like Rusty used to charge
me about $1.50 for them 15 years ago. I like to keep a couple of prefilters in
the glove box of every diesel.

2018-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Thats a weak argument, the cord is less of a thing than lugging a weighty
vacuum cleaner around. If you put lots of ports you can have quite a short
hose. We have one port but our house is small.I also don't need to think about
finding an outlet, I don't have to manage the cord, the bin gets emptied once a
year if I think of it or 2 years if I don't. Any dust from the bin is easily
contained, its got a great big filter since I don't need to lug it around. I
don't trip over it, its not taking up a closet and its got wy more
suction...
If you've never used one you need to try before you condemn it.

How long will it last? We've been in our house 12 years so the central vac is
at least that old, if I were to guess its probably twice that old but I don't
know for sure.Had a Kirby door to door salesman stop by a few years ago, didn't
know they still existed before that, he did the "lets test our super vacuum
against yours." My central vac at least kept up with his machine which I would
expect, mine is bigger.
The little robot is for sure convenient but, especially on carpet, its leaving
a lot of "stuff" down there. Oh and it can't vacuum your bed. Seriously, vacuum
your bed, its great...

There's no discernible recoil involved in firing those shotguns.

Brazilian cops run the full range of skill, just like ours.
You'll see videos of Lee Paige stupidity, then you'll see a video where one of
them puts an assailant down with two fast and well aimed shots.

So I'm going to assume that if my 2A plug is flatlining on the oscilloscope and
the 2B plug looks very bad, I should start looking at the middle cylinder on
the right bank.

local junk yards. Any color will do.

Also looking for:

Put new rubber brake lines on all 4 wheels and new pads on the front. The
front pads were soaked with what looked like brake fluid. installed new

That would be odd, given that on the older V8's it's 1-4 down the right side,
and 5-8 down the left.

I got to have breakfast with Richard Nixon in 1968. Dad was a mover and shaker
in the R party at the time, and it was a donation sort of thing, so all of us
had to go so he could make the largest possible donation to the campaign.

Don’t recall a lot about it other than Nixon always looked like he just rolled
out of bed…

If memory serves me correctly, it's 1-3-5 on one bank and 2-4-6 on the
other.
