Or, better yet, foil the thieves by having an older MB with an analog
key made of steel, and house keys made of brass or steel.

Reminds me of when in about 1996 one of my son's friend was over.   he
wanted to call home.  We had on the wall the wall phone we had moved
everywhere with us.  He looked at it and said "I don't know how to make
a call on that phone."  He had never seen a dial phone.

Put tinfoil over your head and you’re crazy, but if you put tinfoil
around your car key fob, you’re a genius.

Turns out thieves can use devices that will amplify fob signals to cars
or copy the code to get into a vehicle.

So why wrap your car key fob in foil? Well, your car waits for a signal
from the fob and thieves can grab fob signals. But if your car key fob is
wrapped in tinfoil it will decrease the signal.

Not only should you keep your car key fob in foil, you should do it at
home, too. Toss your keys into an old coffee can to prevent someone from
stealing your car key fob’s signal. (Find out more about smart door

I tried to get that when I dumped AAA after they proved worthless.  The
agent said to just pay for the tow if it is needed.  That is cheaper in
his opinion.   YMMV, especially when SWMBO's man is named Kaleb.

Re: [MBZ] reminded tonight how bad old diesels are in the snow

2019-03-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Schnee performance depends on:

1.  Tire performance.  (min of Blizzaks, max of hakkas)
2.  See #1   (repeat)   No fat tires.  Stock size.  The engineers picked
the best tire size.

3.  Driver experience/ability
4.  Weight over drive wheels

Note 1:  Front wheel drive is less controllable in slick conditions than
RWD.  The contact patch between the tire and the pavement is the same
size, regardless of RWD, FWD or 4WD.   4WD makes no difference in
starting or stopping, but IS as uncontollable as FWD once the front
tires lose grip.  FWD and 4WD will put you in the diitch faster.  Gimme
an SDL on Blizzaks and I can go anywhere in ice or snow until it gets so
deep the belly pan floats the car on the schnee.

Note 2:  You will notice the type of vehicle is not listed because it
makes minimal difference.

Scariest drive I ever had was in the crand caravan in 2006 or so when I
got caught on the east shore of lake michigan with summer tars when it
started to snow.  All I tried to do was drive to the nearest wally world
to buy winter tars.   It was the worst white knuckle ever, and the
schnee was not that deep yet.  1-3"

no comparison between "all season" and real schnee tars.  Blizzaks have
a Metzler heritage and are available at tar rack prices (ask for price
match) at your local farstone dealer.  They are available at competitive
prices similar to a low-mid to mid range summer tar.    hakkas are big
bucks.

Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote on 3/8/19 11:16 AM:

Yes, admittedly the tires are not suitable for snow. They aren't old,
but they are your standard "all season" touring tread and are doing
nothing in the snow.

Didn't buy snow tires for it this winter because I hadn't even planned
on driving it. I like to keep it out of the salt. But circumstances
changed. We're close enough to spring was hoping to get away with it.

I think I have a couple of bags of hardened Sakrete and a few extra
wheels in the garatge, I'll try throwing those in the trunk.

Every car in the family for the past 15 years has taken a ride with AAA, or
gotten battery jumped. I think it is a very smart investment for roadside, if
not for insurance. It truly beats paying a towing bill once a year.

Every car in the family for the past 15 years has taken a ride with AAA, or
gotten battery jumped. I think it is a very smart investment for roadside, if
not for insurance. It truly beats paying a towing bill once a year.

Well, that changes the optics of my dragging the SD up here once I get a fresh
engine in her. Temps are just getting past freezing, the streets are beginning
to get slushy. I get to walk the dog. One road has massive divots in the six
inches of ice on the road where either the garbage truck or other dually truck
lost all traction and spun a bunch of hot rubber.

Some sort of yurpeen brand, I forget which, maybe a MAN.  It looked

2019-03-08 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Yes, admittedly the tires are not suitable for snow. They aren't old,
but they are your standard "all season" touring tread and are doing
nothing in the snow.

Didn't buy snow tires for it this winter because I hadn't even planned
on driving it. I like to keep it out of the salt. But circumstances
changed. We're close enough to spring was hoping to get away with it.

I think I have a couple of bags of hardened Sakrete and a few extra
wheels in the garatge, I'll try throwing those in the trunk.

Cheaper to get a towing rider on your regular auto insurance policy. I
believe Geico charges me something nominal like $15 per 6 mos. Allows for
towing up to 25 miles plus unlimited jump starts. They have been very
accommodating to me. Also, you may qualify for free MB roadside assistance
by spending $100 at the dealership.

I will concur with the need for better tires -- those which have a least
the mountain and snowflake symbol on them. When I got our '94 E420, it
had Yokohama tires on it which were horrible in the snow. I could not
make it up a short slight hill out of the parking lot at work with out
taking a run at it. I put on Nokians (I forget the model, but not
Hakkapelita) and it was very much improved, even without weight in the
trunk.

2019-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Need better tires and some weight in the back. My 240Ds and 190Ds never let me
down or left me stuck. My '85 190D once drove home in an epic snowstorm, I was
climbing one big hill with a Toyota 4x4 next to me crab walking in 4wd with 4
wheels spinning. I had just gotten snow tires on the 190D and it walked right
up the hill, 2nd gear, light on the accelerator, no issue. When I got home I
was plowing 6" of snow. If I stopped I'd have to back up a few feet to get
going again but once moving it'd keep going...

Had maybe 1" or 2" of snow, could not get home in the 300SD. Stranded at

come in the Frontier with a tow chain to pull me up.

Rear wheels were spinning at idle.

Need to pay more attention to the weather forecast.

Wife used to work for the SE AAA. Understand that AAA is not a nationwide
organization, but a disparate group of regional companies that are loosely
connected by name that offer benefits unique to that region’s owner/group.
Thus the difference in benefits depending on where you live.

Check the offerings closely, as you might find they don’t extend benefits
outside of a given geographical area.

It depends on where you are in the country. AAA of MN sucks.   they paid
for loading a car on the truck and 5 miles.  A 20 mile tow cost me
$70-80 WITH AAA and I am sure I could have negotiated $70 or less with a
guy who owns a rollback.  At the time I knew 2.  One of them was AAA,
but NOT they guy then sent.   AAA MN also cancels you if you use the tow
twice in  a year.

Daughter has AAA in the south.  She gets unlimited 100 mile tows.   We
used that to get the FL POS home.  One  100 mile tow to Pensacola, a
second from pensacola  about a week later.
