A vehicle I had a long time ago had one of these which required a manual
reset after the brakes had been imbalanced, like in bleeding.

I suspect a brake proportioning valve turns the dash light on when the brake

Usually uneven front-rear breaking is one of the things that turns on the brake 
idiot light.

Must be the back since they are not properly adjusted yet.

What I am trying to figure out is what the deal is the brake warning 
light in the cluster.  It comes on when the parking brake is set.  Also, 
when I was pushing the pedal the other day it was off, but would come on 
as the pedal got close to the floor.  Today it seems to stay on all the 
time.  As far as I can tell, there is no electrical connection at the 
MC.  Supposedly the light indicates if the parking brake is on or if 
there is a braking issue.  I wonder if there is some switch somewhere in 
the system that if the pedal goes too far to the floor it turns the 
light on.  I can't seem to find much info on exactly what is tied into 
that light.

[MBZ] W163 Motor Mounts

You won't have a pedal until you get the rear brakes adjusted.   Drum brake 
cylinders are pretty big, and unlike disk brakes, the shoes retract completely 
every application.

I bought one of those 10 or 15 years ago - used it to cut a lot of steel
and some wood.  It finally died last year - the worm gear that turns the
reciprocating mechanism stripped. Replaced it with another one - we'll see
how it goes.

I did have a 1/2" HF drill that I tried to use to mix floor leveling cement
with - it burst into flames in my hands! Replaced it with a Porter cable
1/2" drill, and it mixed many a bag of cement, etc. without complaining at
all, and is still going, so yes, it often pays to buy a decent tool.

special about a 96 Chevy.


He said not. He agreed that you need to tighten up the rear shoes to the 
point where they drag a bit.


He said that even if the front brakes were fine before you started 
working on the rear brakes, the brakes would not feel right until you 
got the back brakes set up properly.

The braking effort seems fine. This has the hydro boost brakes rather than the 
vacuum booster. I’m still suspecting the MC is weak. It’s not expensive or hard 
to replace so I will probably replace it.

I've ever farmed out to a local shop.  He replaced all the lines, wheel
cylinders, and calipers.  The bleed screws were frozen and it was cheap to
get new parts than pay him to deal with it!

Which leads me to this:
If the brake fluid is rank, which it was, and the wheel cylinder is
leaking, it's likely the master cylinder rubber cups are also leaking, just
a bit. When master cylinder leaks on Chebbys with brake vacuum booster
behind it, the brake fluid eats the diaphragm in the vac brake booster,
which means, you do not get "full brake assist" from the brake booster.
Eventually, the leak will get so bad you can hear vacuum leak sucking when
you press the brakes, which are not doing their job.

Could you have a failed or failing vac brake booster?  If you do, ALWAYS
replace booster and master cylinder as a pair.
It's a Chebby falt point. might just be why brakes have been crap and still
are.

It’s not new, I have no idea how old it is. It’s possible it got sucked dry but 
I would think after adding new fluid and getting clear bubble free flow at all 
of the wheels the air should be out, but I could be wrong.

My 96 Silverado has rear drums, I had to replace the cylinders a year or 
so ago as one was leaking badly, I just ran the adjuster until the shoes 
were tight against the drum then went and did the back and forth thing.  
They settled in quick.

The rear wheel cylinders were leaking and contaminated the shoes so that is why 
o replaced all that. I’m going to adjust the shoes either today or tomorrow 
then see what happens. It’s either that or I somehow still have air on the 
lines, which I can’t see how. Or air on master cylinder or it’s bad,  it if it 
was bad I would think it would start sinking to the floor.

If it's a new MC, you usually need to do a "bench bleed" before
installing.

If it got low enough on fluid to suck air, not sure.

I think you put the adjustment tool in a little slot in the backer plate 
to push on the toothed wheel on the adjuster?  If the drum is on you 
can't get at it.  The wheel should not interfere unless it makes it 
easier to get at the back of the brake assembly

I will probably pull the wheels back off and adjust the shoes, or I guess I 
could do it with the wheels on. I did not measure the drums, they still looked 
good with very little wear, at least they did not have a ridge at the edge.  I 
hate drum brakes.

If you want bad brakes, rely on the automatic adjusters.
If you want good full pedal, adjust the shoes till they lock up the wheel,
then back the adjuster off until you just can feel a very light drag. First
couple of hard stops will "wear in" the shoes and you will turn free with
no drag.
OR,
Find a clear area and back up, hit the brakes while backing up, multiple
times ie pump, pump, pump.. pull forward and do it again and again.
The only time automatic adjusters engage is when you are backing up,
[clever huh?]
My personal preference is to manually adjust them so I can actually feel
that I have full contact, then back the adj off a touch.

You will much improve pedal travel and brake contact.

Question: Did you measure the rear drums when you had them off?  It's
possible they were turned to the limit at last brake job and are now out of
limit large, so even new shoes won't fill the space?

Blue 904).  I've already got a headlight assembly on the shelf, in case
that is also damaged.

Does the pedal come up when if you pump it?  That points to
"loose" slaves and not air.

Does the pedal sink under steady pressure?  That is a leak - most
often past the piston seals in the master cylinder.

  We have several right angle grinders from this 4.3 amp model
  up to a 7” Makita. All have their purpose. Just use this grinder
  accordingly and it will last a long time. Very useful for light
  steel cutting and brushing. We have several of these light weight
  grinders that we use for brushing welds. We keep at least two set
  up at each station and swap between them to not overheat them.

  My grinder burned up 72 hours after buying it. The tool worked

  It's my son's, but I'm gonna borrow it...

  I saw a guy do the most amazing thing with his the other day.
  He wanted to shave a little bit off the hand wheel/ balance wheel
  he was putting on an old [sewing] machine. It wasn't an official
  replacement, and it interfered with the inner clutch release handle.
  He doesn't have a machine shop, so he tilted his angle grinder to
  the side, and stepped on the speed controller for the sewing
  machine. When the hand wheel was spinning, he used the angle grinder
  to just grind a tiny bit off the inner edge of the wheel. Mind
  blown. It just opens up so many possibilities when you think outside
  the box! NOTE: NOT A RECOMMENDED USE OF THE TOOL. IF YOU TRY IT,
  YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN, LIABILITY WISE.
