Re: [MBZ] ML 722.6 connector leaking

The conductor plate has absolutely nothing to do with keeping oil in.
That's all part of the connector assembly, and its seals.

Because it's easy to administer, but primarily because of Time Machine.
It's backed up seamlessly, just like all of our user machines. Otherwise
I'd probably be using a Pi.

Well, that's sort of like asking, "I just bought a barn. I'd like
to set up a workshop. What should I put in it?" Could be
welding, woodworking, automotive, pottery, taxidermy, gunsmith,
jewelery.

Yet there are some generals.

Internet access is required. Duh.

You need a public IP address that DNS can find. Most of us don't
pay the extra money for a "fixed IP address" so there are "dynamic
DNS" services that will let a visitor enter "thurst.org" and the
DNS will find your IP even if it's not the same as it was
yesterday.

A server is needed. This is a computer running software. For
email, I'm guessing you want a place for _your_ email to live -
not a service for others. But the web server is likely for other
people to use.

A Raspberry Pi can be used as a server. I personally would use
Linux, or BSD - but whatever. Jim uses a Mac. For web hosting,
run the server software, set your firewall to allow the HTTP and
HTTPS to get in, and you're live. Then all you need is content.
Photos, witty writing, helpful articles - whatever you have.

Email can be trickier. The method I use is to collect via POP3
(don't leave the messages "out there") and then here inside I host
them via IMAP (5 different computers look at the same mail
message). Be aware the "send" process of email is a completely
different set of actions than "get".

Far easier is to pay for hosting. Maybe buy hosting for a year or
so and see what is involved without running your own software,
then migrate to your own somewhere along the way. Bluehost has
served me well. Linux servers, SSH login (lets me use rsync), fair
prices, good services, and what limited tech help I have asked for
has been there.

Sounds like a good plan. With the NSA doing all that data gathering, why
can they not put it to good use and track down the spam callers?

As I wrote to myself a few months ago:

Scammers can use computers to make your Caller ID say anything they want
- Why can't the Congress pass a law requiring the Bells to prevent
  that?
- Failing that, why can't the NSA track these criminals?

On our cell phone, I look at the number and if it's one I don't

I know no one who has the same exchange as our cell phone.

We have the same thing going on in South Tampa. It’s a fairly compressed area
that was populated with small bungalows built post WWII. Now they get razed and
a vertical McMansion goes up in place of the bungalow on a very, very small lot.

Almost as bad as the tearing down and replacement is the horrible patchwork
look the area has because there are bungalows with McMansions on either side of
them, or vice-versa. No consistency of size, architecture, nothing.

We will see just how much Green New Deal power there is if that idiot from WA
has his way. He has gotten the SEA persecutor to now want to go after the
fossil fuel industry in town. Makes you wonder how these idiots will heat
their homes in the winter. Fire wood? Not going to be oil or natural gas, as
that is evil. BPA does make some power out of fish water, but the fish need
that with our coming drought. We have a few windmills, and there is a growing
industry of on home solar panels. In no way enough to power all the idiotic
plug in cars on the roads here.

Might come down to driving to fetch groceries or heating the home this winter
with all the “green” energy.

The neighborhood really grew with post war housing and the bulk of homes

bulldozed and people kennels (look like stacks of shoe boxes fell over) are
popping up like mushrooms on a cow patty. Large lots are now fully occupied

I've bought a couple sets over the past 4 years at Costco fit was good,

Might give them a try, I don't know if they currently carry them... Haven't
looked or a while.

Or if you don't care as much about originality, you could strip the paint off
and powder coat them. If you use the kitchen oven do it when you're home alone.
This would be a good color to powder coat them:

2019-06-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
IMHO, Bundt wheels are an eye distraction when on an otherwise cleanly
designed car. The Mercedes "look" as designed, imparts a kind of classic
style that reflects the strong and enduring character earned by the cars
reputation. Bundt wheels are on par with bad ear rings and mismatched
lipstick on a "10" woman...

Steel wheels with Mercedes logo, body color match centers all "come
together" in a smooth, well appointed look one that adds to the overall
look, rather than draw focus from the car to what is a detail with to many
angles.

.02 worth of opinion.. An early version of 22"s bling wheels with rubber
band tires you look at it, but you can't see anything but those damn
getto wheels kind of thing.

Re: [MBZ] ML 722.6 connector leaking

2019-06-25 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I looked at another coupla vids of replacing the conductor plate, it
seems like the electrical connector thingie is what seals it up, one
o-ring into the conductor plate electrical socket and the other seals
against the transmission body and the fluid is contained between the 2
o-rings.

I'm gonna drop the pan and just go ahead and replace the fluid and
filter, at least that will be done.

The car is surprisingly clean underneath, I guess maybe he detailed it
before he tried to sell it.  :Looks like a bit of PS fluid dripping but
nothing too bad, there are some new tranny cooler hoses in there, the
vehicle looks pretty well maintained (aside from this issue).

On 6/25/19 8:18 PM, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes wrote:
I pulled off the electrical connector (easy on the ML, fair amount of
room to work in there) and there was a lot of fluid in there.  I
sopped up what I could up in the transmission hole where the
connectors are, coming off the conductor plate it looks like. I
sprayed contact cleaner in there too but it seems to keep leaking out
fluid and it is not particularly clean either.  I'm wondering if this
guy I bought it from actually changed the conductor plate like he
said.  I'm not quite sure why it would keep leaking. Looking at pics
of the conductor plate I don't see how it seals up against the
transmission body where it goes out the hole, there don't appear to be
any orings in there.

Any thoughts on why it is leaking out the transmission hole?  Are the
o-rings in the connector (I have a new one but the old one looked OK)
what keeps things from leaking?

I don't think it wicked up the wires but I will pull the TCU and look
at it too after I sort this aspect out.

The fluid looked dirty and nasty, I'm wondering if I should just drop
the pan and drain out the fluid and pulled the valve body and take a
look at the conductor plate and see exactly what is going on?  I see
new ones plus filter, gasket and connector for $80 on Amazon, some
generic part I am thinking but since there are so many of these things
out there I guess it would be OK.  Although I do have a filter and
connector already, just the conductor plate is only $7 less.

Nothing that I know of. The only personal information they want is your name,
email address and the phone number you want to set up.

"How Does Nomorobo Stay In Business?

While the Nomorobo Landline service is free for consumers, businesses and
public safety organizations pay to license our data. For consumers, robocalls
are annoying. But, for businesses it costs them real money. And, for EMS
systems (like 911), it could be a matter of life and death.

These are the people that don't mind paying for the service and using it
directly in their telephone equipment.”

There’s your answer.

[MBZ] ML 722.6 connector leaking

2019-06-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I pulled off the electrical connector (easy on the ML, fair amount of
room to work in there) and there was a lot of fluid in there.  I sopped
up what I could up in the transmission hole where the connectors are,
coming off the conductor plate it looks like. I sprayed contact cleaner
in there too but it seems to keep leaking out fluid and it is not
particularly clean either.  I'm wondering if this guy I bought it from
actually changed the conductor plate like he said.  I'm not quite sure
why it would keep leaking.  Looking at pics of the conductor plate I
don't see how it seals up against the transmission body where it goes
out the hole, there don't appear to be any orings in there.

Any thoughts on why it is leaking out the transmission hole?  Are the
o-rings in the connector (I have a new one but the old one looked OK)
what keeps things from leaking?

I don't think it wicked up the wires but I will pull the TCU and look at
it too after I sort this aspect out.

The fluid looked dirty and nasty, I'm wondering if I should just drop
the pan and drain out the fluid and pulled the valve body and take a
look at the conductor plate and see exactly what is going on?  I see new
ones plus filter, gasket and connector for $80 on Amazon, some generic
part I am thinking but since there are so many of these things out there
I guess it would be OK.  Although I do have a filter and connector
already, just the conductor plate is only $7 less.

I received a "Microsoft tech support" call when we were in Los Alamos.
I just played dumb and did everything they told me to do, reporting
faithfully what menu options I saw and when I did not find the menu
option they wanted, which, using CentOS Linux, was quite often.

The fellow finally gave up, asked me to hold, and then put his supervisor
on the line. A little while later he asked me what operating system I was
using. When I said, "Linux," he hung up.

Hard to say. I’ve made the improvements over such a lengthy period of time it’s
tough to compare. The one noticeable thing is that the front left isn’t sunk
down a good 3-4 inches like it had been.

I’m probably going to drive it to work tomorrow since the AC is working now.
I’ll be able to wind it up good on the reversible lanes in the morning as no
one will be out and it’s a really, really nice road surface.

I know we’ve had this conversation here before regarding my red 300D W123. It
has bundts with failing paint which I plan to swap for aluminum steelies (I
have already) with hubcaps (already got a set painted). So a good friend is
visiting from the good ‘ol state of California and feels that the bundts are
beautiful and unique and correct for the car. He used to be a Mercedes guy (now
BMW) and our friendship began and blossomed over Mercedes so he’s well versed
in these cars. I’m now starting to second guess the bundt to aluminum steelie
with hubcap swap. Any thoughts? I already know what Andrew’s opinion is!

It’s certainly a personal preference, but I think that steelies (or AL
steelies) with the painted covers look so much more sophisticated for these
cars, whether it’s a W123 or W114 or W108. I just think the colored wheel
covers make a really nice accent, that’s all.

[MBZ] To bundt or not to bundt

2019-06-25 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes

I use the NomoRobo service for the land line, and every time it gets a call
that’s bogus I report it. I kid you not, within a couple of weeks with NomoRobo

I had a rash of those “This is Microsoft tech support - can you check your

But I do recommend NomoRobo. Don’t cost ‘nuthin and it’s easy to set up and

2019-06-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Autodialers just go down the numbers and place calls, a lot of them
spoof the inbound number.  I get 2-3/day that spoof my Houston number
exchange, and others from Texas.  The land line probably gets 20 a day,
a lot of them spoofed.  I got one a year or so ago from a friend's
number, answered it (I never answer the land line, for some reason I was
right by it when the call came in and saw the name) and it was some spam
call.

I am going to run for Congress based on 2 platforms: 1) using the full
capabilities of National Technical Means to find and eliminate spam
callers wherever they are on the planet: and 2) to abolish Daylight
Savings or Standard Time or whatever it is that makes the clocks
change.  Everything else that Congress takes up can just happen without
my involvement.

Back to topic, some guy needed a "diesel expert" for his 220D in the
Louisville area, someone pointed him to this kid as the expert as he had
changed the oil in this guy's car.

A non-published phone number? Even if people know your name and your

I like how they use your exchange number to fool you into answering. Like if
your number is 444-321-9034 they call you from a “321” exchange.

You can do that with a regular (sedan) Beetle all day long. A convertible has
larger frame box members on the sides of the pan to give it structural
rigidity. Try and lift the convertible body off the pan and it folds up like a
big German taco.

We used to know a guy who was a retired detective from Miami PD that had a
really nice 48 foot trimaran he would rent out for the week. He would crew it
for us if we wanted, which is what we often did, as he knew the waters a lot
better as well as the best places to dive. Saw a lot of really cool stuff in
the water around there.

I always got a kick out of how different the coasts were. West coast was nice,
calm beaches that sloped off to some decent depths with lots of clear water.
Some good wrecks and reefs to dove on. East coast was rocky and rough - the
locals tossed their trash out on that side of the island as it would get beat
and hauled out to sea.

We were walking down the street one evening in Oranjestad after dinner and saw
a big commotion in front of a store. Seems that the newest wringer washers had
just arrived and a couple of the local women were all worked up about it (this
was in the mid 1980s.) They had some of these things in the store window. We
were amazed.

I was living in the GWN at the time.

I used to try and plan my business trips to Central America in the winter. I
went to Panama one time and during the trip spent a day on my customer’s 60’

blazing sunburn, beet red.

I was not popular, nor did I get any sympathy.

It was still fun.

There was some overlap in 71 between the “standard” Beetle and the Super
Beetle. This was a “standard” Beetle with the flat windshield.

The pictures in the shop are in a now defunct carriage builder’s shop that was
built in the 1870s in Sheboygan, WI. The guy that did the restoration body work
was a third or fourth generation German whose great-great-great grandfather
built the building. My guy was a artist. Absolute perfectionist.

in the sense that the quality can vary significantly based on what you pay. In
other words, if you want nice ones they’re expensive. That variable also comes
into play based on if you want generic ones or ones that are designed
specifically for your car.

What is the purpose of the replacement kit? Is there a fault with the OE

Perhaps he wants to be able to use the same filter as his farm tractor or

are also huge
pieces of channel iron bolted underneath the car to compensate.

Why? Beats me. When I got a load of crap fuel (300SD 617) the tank strainer
plugged up before either filter.
