[MBZ] DORIAN FORECAST IS A MESS

2019-08-30 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

Yeah, the forecast for Hurricane Dorian is a mess
It's as if the world's best model just threw up its arms in despair.

Hurricane-track forecasting has gotten pretty good over the last couple of
decades—so much so that some hurricane scientists believe we are close to
reaching a limit on predictability. However, there are still outlier storms
that are difficult to forecast, and Hurricane Dorian is definitely one of those
cases.

Hurricane forecasts may be running headlong into the butterfly effect

This uncertainly is only going to amplify the misery of Floridians seeking to
prepare for or evacuate from what is likely a major hurricane bearing down on
the state. In this case, the problem may be further worsened by premature
confidence in where Dorian will go: as of Thursday evening, the one thing we do
know about this storm is that we don't know where it's going to go.

Spaghetti plots of forecast tracks are commonly shared online, both in news
stories and on social media, and they're sometimes useful. With Dorian, a plot
like the one below from Thursday evening, which shows the official forecast
track from the National Hurricane Center (in black) as well as other models, is
actually very deceiving.

From the plot above (SEE WEBSITE), if we dismiss TCLP and CLP5 (which you
should, because they are not really models at all but persistence and
trajectory tracks), there is a nice clustering of models bringing Dorian to the
Central Florida coast on Monday. The agreement is quite good.

But don't believe it. To get a better idea of where Dorian is likely to go over
the next week or so, a better practice is to look at ensemble forecasts from
the global models. They do a good job of capturing the range of outcomes based
upon slightly different initial conditions. For this article, we'll look at the
Thursday 12z ensemble output from the European model. (In this case, 12z means
the models were initialized at 12:00 UTC Thursday and finalized about six hours
later).

What is important to note about this plot is that it only shows the track of
Dorian out to 120 hours, so that means its position as of Tuesday at 8am ET.
Notice that there is a remarkable variance in the location of the "center" of
Dorian in these roughly four dozen ensemble members. Yes, a reasonable amount
of the ensemble members bring Dorian to the coast between Sunday and Tuesday,
but some are far, far away. In some scenarios, Dorian turns north before even
reaching Florida.

This uncertainty meshes with what we're actually observing about the
atmospheric conditions that will help steer Dorian—namely that the steering
currents around the Bahamas are weak. Eventually, Dorian is going to turn
northward and traverse around the western periphery of a ridge of high pressure
over the Atlantic, but it's difficult to say when that turn will come. In the
meantime, the storm is going to move slowly.

The 5pm ET Thursday track forecast from the National Hurricane Center shown at
the top of this post—which is absolutely the authority for such things—captures
this ambiguity. It encompasses the entire Florida peninsula within the five-day
cone of uncertainty.

All of this is singularly unhelpful to the residents of the Sunshine State, who
are staring down at the possibility of a major hurricane making landfall
somewhere along the peninsula in three to four days. The time for preparations
and evacuations is now, but it is hard to offer much in the way of specificity
about where the worst storm surge, damaging winds, and inland rainfall will
occur. Certainly a slow-moving storm will make the latter variable, rainfall,
worse.

Looking for some context regarding the latest EPS data? Here's today's
annotated spaghetti map with a rough idea of what we know, what we don't, and
what you should be doing depending on where you are. With so many questions,
it's important you keep checking in for latest info! pic.twitter.com/HSpjM3W47R

For what it's worth, the European model provides ensemble tracks for the storm
10 days out. If we look at the 240-hour tracks, the confusion only increases.
Weather enthusiast Jack Sillin captured this nicely on Twitter this afternoon,
highlighting several of the variables in what remains a complicated forecast.

So yeah, Dorian's forecast is a mess. Beware of anyone who tries to tell you
otherwise over at least the next day or so.

I couldn't find that exact quote, but I did find:

"No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature
is in session." Judge Gideon Tucker

"This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session
as when the baby gets hold of a hammer." Will Rogers

"We have the best Congress money can buy." Will Rogers

"The mistakes made by Congress wouldn't be so bad if the next Congress
didn't keep trying to correct them." Cullen Hightower

"If the Congress wants to bring the Panamanian economy to its knees, why
doesn't it just go down there and run it?" Ronald Wilson Reagan

"Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress.
But I repeat myself." Mark Twain

"It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no
distinctly American criminal class except Congress." Mark Twain

"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution
which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of
benevolence, the money of their constituents." James Madison

"If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money,
and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a
limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one, subject
to particular exceptions." James Madison

"Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare,
but only those specifically enumerated." Thomas Jefferson

"When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things
to be bought and sold are legislators." P. J. O'Rourke

"As long as we have a government that can exploit peaceful, hardworking
Americans on behalf of special interests, as long as it can make or break
any American business with (for example) tax policy, politically
motivated antitrust prosecutions, and ill-considered regulation, and in
general as long as economic winners and losers can be determined in
Washington, people will want to assure their share of the loot by
influencing the political process through money. Campaign finance reform
focuses on the symptom rather than the problem." Ron Paul

"When I see a congressman giving his opinion on something, I always
wonder if it represents his real opinion or if it represents an opinion
that he's designed in order to be elected. It seems to be a central
problem for politicians. So I often wonder: what is the relation of
integrity to working in the government?" Richard Feynman

"It is much more important to kill bad bills than to pass good ones."
Calvin Coolidge

Re: [MBZ] Meet Google Fi, a different kind of phone plan

2019-08-30 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
The Republic cell plan (that I learned about here) is $15 a mo + $5/GB cell
data. Includes unlimited text and calls over cell. All wifi data is free and
will use wifi (vs cell) when available. Can bring your own phone if it's one
of many supported.

I've been very satisfied, especially since they switched me to the CDMA net
that has better coverage (vs GSM) at my home.

With reliable cell at home now, I switched my home phone to OOMA (premium
plan), saving another $40 a month. Of course, OOMA requires good internet
connectivity, which I have

Re: [MBZ] Meet Google Fi, a different kind of phone plan

2019-08-30 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Yes, $34/mo is very good for unlimited.
Fantastic if they allow tethering.
I could use something like that to replace my home internet if I can tether it,
or if the SIM card will work in a hotspot. I wonder if the data gets throttled
if you go over a usage cap.

The MNVO I'm with was traditionally marketed to low volume users, so it was a
surprise to me when they started offering unlimited talk and text plans last
month. Their unlimited carryover of existing balances is nice to have, but it
also serves as a barrier to exiting.
I currently have 26GB available, spread across three phones, two Verizon, one
T-Mobile that'll probably soon get moved back to Verizon, with the phone's
service end dates in 2020, 2021, and 2032. Of course the 2032 expiration date
is on the phone with the lowest balances, but if I wanted to give up one of my
phone numbers I could combine it with the balances on one of the other phones.

Last I knew, Craig had one flip phone on Verizon's network with a five digit
minute balance.
If he transfers that to a smartphone with a free year of service on it, he'll
have a five digit minute balance and a two digit GB balance and nothing more to
pay for a year. If he ever starts using many talk minutes, he can step up to
unlimited for $20 a month.

Re: [MBZ] Meet Google Fi, a different kind of phone plan

2019-08-30 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Nothing you can't get from other MNVOs who likely don't make it a standard
business practice to sell your call logs.
$20 a month, free talk and text, plus $10 for each GB is inherently inferior to
the following Tracfone plans, for example:
$20/mo for talk and text plus one GB, unlimited carryover on the data.
$25/mo for talk and text plus two GB.
$30/mo for talk and text plus three GB.
As you can see, what costs $30 at the Goolag costs $20 at Tracfone.
What costs $50 at Goolag costs $30 at Tracfone.

The pricing is finally catching up to the reality that talk and text doesn't
use enough network bandwidth to be worth metering any more. Many plans are now
giving out unlimited talk and text and selling the data by the GB. And there
are unlimited data plans in the $50/month range, especially on lower tier
networks like T-Mobile.

If I were somebody like Craig who had a bazillion pre-existing minutes on
Tracfone, I'd sign up for a Tracfone account, verify that all the minutes show
up in my account summary, then transfer them into a smartphone plan (1000
existing minutes yields 1GB of data on the new plan) with something like these:
https://www.hsn.com/products/lg-rebel-4-5-hd-16gb-tracfone-with-1500-minutestextdata/9128705

Re: [MBZ] Meet Google Fi, a different kind of phone plan

2019-08-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You can only use the Pixel or select Motorola phones, all of which are fairly
expensive.

Spectrum (Charter in other parts of the world) is offering phone service now. I
can BYOD and it costs me $14/mon per LTE gig, nothing else. Most of what I do
is with wifi, so right now I’m into the billing cycle about 30% and I’ve used
0.1 gig. My bill will most likely be $14.00 this month.

I‘ve moved four phones from a Verizon 16GB/month plan that cost me almost
$200/month (there is one more phone and a tablet on the plan that I won’t port
to Spectrum) for six devices total that will now cost me barely $60 a month
with Spectrum for the phones I moved off of the Verizon plan.

[MBZ] 190D update

2019-08-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Today I pulled the instrument cluster because the PO had replaced the
fuel temp oil gauge with one out of a gasser, so I put the correct one
in.  Took car to town to fill it up with fresh diesel and to see if fuel
gauge works, it doesn't. I guess I need to pull the sending unit and
clean it.

The cruise control appears to be completely dead again.  I double
checked to make sure I got the plug back on the speed sensor on the back
of the cluster, and I did so I brought the amp back in the house and
will redo all of the solder.

Let’s let the List Mom worry about how to manage things and not throw shade at

If I have to pull this list over you’re all in trouble.

[MBZ] OT: Dialing in the Kentucky rifle

2019-08-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You guys remember the Kentucky rifle I was given awhile ago?I've been working
on it off and on. Finally got some time to go to the range on Monday. Fired
about 30 shots: https://imgur.com/gljtG8n
Its getting there, the sights are pretty primitive, as you'd expect, its an
1830s design so getting them adjusted involves a drift and a hammer.
I'm shooting roundball, they're 127 grains apiece. I've been use 50 grains of
blackpowder, once I get the windage correct I'll mess around with maybe more
powder. I've also got a bunch of conical bullets that are in the 230 grain
range, they'd be better if I were hunting.
In case you've forgotten heres some pics of the
rifle:https://live.staticflickr.com/4553/26465698699_d5d43b3ba5_b.jpghttps://live.staticflickr.com/4491/26465701709_17729cd841_b.jpg

2019-08-30 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Well, I cannot say that I like the way it looks. I suppose it may be a
matter of its age and it may have looked great when it was new and
stylish but, I don't like the vinyl top and I am not all that crazy
about the 2 tone paint. I also don't really care for the red interior
with that colour scheme. If the car was white, then the red would look
good to me but not the way it is.

I think I would be very afraid to buy a used Rolls unless I bought it
from someone that I had known for a long while and I actually knew the
car. A cheap Mercedes can become expensive, but the Rolls is a whole new
level of expensive.

Ah, but the aesthetic! For whatever reason, I love the look of a
side-by-side. My primary varmint piece
is a "New Baker" 12-ga double. It needed a new firing pin, which the local
gunsmith fabbed, and there
was a chunk out of the stock, at the action, which I cut in and fit. I'm
very proud of that job, you can
barely tell where the new wood begins and the old ends, and it fits the
metal perfectly.

I love the heft and feel. Unfortunately it fits me like crap, it's
difficult for me to hit with it.
If I hold it so that I think it's 'best', and have swung then aimed it and
got it seeming right,
ignoring the stock, the butt of it is nowhere near my shoulder. And it's
not just a length thing.

OTOH, I never consulted a fitting expert, other than myself. I could be
way off base.

Still, that's what I reach for rather than the Win 97. I have some Spanish
(?) doubles in
smaller gauges, including a nice little .410 that is just too cute for
words. These, unlike
some, are scaled properly, not just different barrels on a 12-ga action.

Here they are, but not in Europe or Down Under. I think it’s a colonialism
thing, maybe?

I shot clays in the UK and Australia with side by sides and over/unders. That’s
where I became familiar with Lanber, a Spanish gun.

And yes, if you’ve shot with anything else before, shooting with a side by side
can be challenging. I didn’t like them myself.

I shot in a competition for a fund raiser for our local high school’s sporting
clays team recently. One of the guys in our group had a very expensive/ornate
British side by side.

He wasn’t hitting a darned thing while the rest of us were knocking down
probably about 80%-90% at each station. It was pretty clear that he wasn’t
fitted for the gun, and was probably a well to do parent who thought they would
go out, buy a nice shotgun and show up at the range and knock clays down all
day. After all, how hard can it be?

Collectively I think we had a Mossburg 500, a Remington 870, and my Lanber. For
those not familiar with shotguns, none of these are shotguns that would cost
more than maybe $400-$500 new, except for my Lanber, which is more like $1200
if you could buy a new one (they’re no longer in business in the US.) This
guy’s shotgun, which appeared to be brand new, was no doubt in the several
thousand dollar range, if not more.

By the fourth or fifth stand he was getting pretty frustrated, so we started
letting him try shooting with our shotguns on a rotating basis. He gravitated
to the Mossburg, an excellent shotgun, and by the end of the round was hitting
easily seven out of ten.

Afterwards we got him set up with Roger, our coach, to get fitted to a gun. I
suspect his fancy shotgun will get sold or go in a cabinet somewhere

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT: Oh the temptation

2019-08-30 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
A long time back I was hitting the trap range pretty regular with my plain-Jane
field grade Rem 870. I was standing next to a guy with a really nice Browning
auto. I was hitting 22 or so out of 25 (pretty good for me, not much of a
shotgunner), him not so much. At one point he comments ironically "That's a
nice shotgun you have there!"

If it fits when you shoulder it, for that price, buy it. The brand snobs
will always be around, for what they paid for the
"brand gun" you can buy many cases of ammo and practice to out shoot them.
What a joy that would be.

7.4' high tide last night, 7.6' tonight, 8.2' on the Peninsula

BUY IT !!
Spend some bucks with a skilled gun fitter to get the stock set so it "fits
you", Now that I see the right link, I see it has screw in choke system,
EXCELLENT, so spend a few more bucks and pick up every choke they make,
doubles if you are doing sporting clays with it... so both barrels are
choked the same..
Looks like a fun gun to own for not many bucks. Lower cost of shooting
means you shoot more often, so more fun.

I have the wrenches and feeler gauges, and a bunch of nitrile gloves. I never
got rid of them since I knew that I would eventually own another Mercedes

Well the sea is rising around here, but it started happening before

It's actually due to a very slight slowdown of the Gulf Stream, you can

Interestingly enough the NOAA strom surge models ("SLOSH" models) do not
account for rainfall, only tidal and wind-driven surge. So layering
several inches/feet of rain on top of any surge creates a much worse
event. My buddy is working with a colleague at the College of
Charleston to see about incorporating real-time rainfall modeling into
GIS terrain models and flow-path analysis here on the Island, that would
be amazingly cool but it takes a lot of real-time data input and
computing power to do anything like real-time/predictive anaylsis. But
it does look possible, we are going to be looking into getting some $$
to set something like that up.

We probably won't have any probe data to show until end of the week
(next) at the earliest, we will have to pull the data and crunch it a
bit then do some analysis. We had some interesting data from last year,
a couple of storm events where we got 1.5" and 3.5" of rain, this will
be amazing if we get multiples of those rainfalls.

If anyone is interested, I set up a FB page for our local issues, we
will be posting info about this event and other stuff as we can.

Re: [MBZ] Batten down those Benzes in Flahdah

2019-08-30 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
7.4' high tide last night, 7.6' tonight, 8.2' on the Peninsula
(Charleston).  New moon perigean high tides  Last night there were lots
of streets flooded in town, will be worse tonight.  Latest models
showing 20+" rainfall predictions for the coast and here, we will still
be in higher tide mode Tues/Wed when the storm is forecasted to blow
through here.  If it hugs the coast the onshore winds will be pushing
surge onshore while the rain is trying to drain off.

If anyone is interested, I set up a FB page for our local issues, we
will be posting info about this event and other stuff as we can.
https://www.facebook.com/Lowcountry-Flooded-States-of-America-104813727544555.
Our efforts, and those of others we are sorta affiliated with, are
getting national and international attention, we are very clearly
influencing our local political situation and are trying to get a new
mayor elected who will pay more attention to these issues.
