I consider writing extended interpretations of the stories in posting video,
but then that turns into my opinion, which robs you of coming to your own
conclusions. There are some on list who would find wildly divergent meanings

Bingo!

The last math class I had in kolledge, the prof (first math class with a
prof.) early on showed us how to use differential equations to find area
of complex shapes, like aircraft wings.   It woulda made all the
calculus a lot easier to learn if SOMEONE had shown us some practical
application of what we were trying to learn.

But we digress.  The "barn find" info just needed to convey a few
facts.   Who, what, where, when,  why.   That info is better conveyed in
words.

dan--- via Mercedes

Most importantly, practical application. Being able to relate the
activity to a known process or skill (I believe) makes it that much
easier to learn and understand.

Yes, Max, a combination or reading, studying, and hands on instruction,
and then implementing the new skills is a great way to convey knowledge.

However the video ( I didn't watch) that started my question was nothing
more than to convey a few facts.   In that case, all I need is a little
text to convey the facts.

Both types of media have their place. For facts, knowledge, and some
entertainment, reading is my preference. For some hands on type
education, I find video to be best. I always struggled with written
assembly instructions (insert tab a into slot b) when I was much
younger. Watching someone do it, even at double speed, the light goes
on in my head and I say to myself "ooohhh, that's how it's done".
Podcasts and audiobooks have their place too. It's pretty darn hard to
read a book while you're driving.

[MBZ] OT Car Gear You May Like

2020-02-09 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I bought this blue tooth adapter back in December, to add blue tooth
capability to the radio in the '95 E300 I bought from Dan. The car came
with a nice aftermarket radio but it lacked blue tooth; this adapter solves
that problem. I think I paid $18, now it looks like they are $20 for Prime
members. My radio has an Aux-in jack that this adapter plugs into.

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B075JBLGLB?psc=1=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details

After a month of use, I'm pretty happy and would recommend this if you need
to add blue tooth to your car's radio, and your radio has an Aux-in jack.
This adapter allows me to stream my podcasts to the radio, and also make
phone calls. So far everyone has been able to hear me talk via phone when
I've used it, so the little microphone built into the adapter seems to be
OK.

This adapter does require a USB power source to charge its battery. The
battery is a nice feature, sort of an UPS for the adapter, so when I shut
off the car at a long stop but want to keep the radio playing my podcast,
the blue tooth link between my phone and the adapter is not lost when I
cycle the ignition to off and then back to the accessory position.

While I was considering the purchase of this adapter, I found the same
company makes another version which can either receive audio or send audio,
depending on your needs. For instance, if you wanted to stream the audio
from your TV to blue tooth ear buds or headphones, you could to that. You
could also use it to feed audio from your device into a radio or audio
system with an Aux-in jack.

I was never a big fan of audiobooks, but I like podcasts. There’s a realy good
daily one from the University of Houston called “The Engines of Our Ingenuity”
and is done by their college of Engineering. It’s about how our culture is
formed by human creativity. It’s typically about 4-5 minutes long and does a
great job packing the information into such a short format. It’s been around as
a radio short since 1988.

https://uh.edu/engines/

Stuff You Should Know is also pretty good, too, although it’s a long format
show, so it takes an hour or so of commitment for most programs. They have a
short version that’s good, too. I just listened to an episode about the Tulsa
race riot of 1921. Pretty amazing stuff.

Both types of media have their place. For facts, knowledge, and some
entertainment, reading is my preference. For some hands on type education, I
find video to be best. I always struggled with written assembly instructions
(insert tab a into slot b) when I was much younger. Watching someone do it,
even at double speed, the light goes on in my head and I say to myself "ooohhh,
that's how it's done". Podcasts and audiobooks have their place too. It's
pretty darn hard to read a book while you're driving.

Max is correct. No one wants to read anymore. Even within the realm of training
humans to run the big old nuke plant, what used to be neat and tidy lesson
plans on systems and components have now evolved into YouTube type videos or VR
sessions.
I’m not a fan. I’m a dinosaur. Time to retire for reals.

Well it meets the spec for my Mercedes. Lately I cannot find the big jugs of M1
at Wally world, and the individual quarts are about $8 each so that's not a
good deal.

Maybe I'll try this, but I'd rather use M1.

Lots of “good money”. The locals (Inuits?) took over the Navy’s installation on
Adak and use it to refuel fishing boats. They offer wilderness outings on the
island, too. Used to be the only way you could go to Adak and Shemya was to go
along with an AK DNR person, which required a permit.

When I was out that way everything was still under the control of the Navy
(Adak) and Air Force (Shemya).

Re: [MBZ] OT old wind machines blades

2020-02-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The key word is “occupied”. While Attu and Adak were a few of the islands that
had established installations, all of those islands in between were just spots
to hopscotch from one to the next. Many of them are close enough to see from
one to the other, and open boats were more than adequate to transit from one to
the next. The locals (indigenous folks) moved from one to another regularly to
hunt and fish. We often had at least one person in our group that was a local
who added a lot of background to our travels as we moved around. That made it
pretty cool, I thought.

Figure that a couple of islands might be 10-15 miles apart, but both have peaks
(often volcanoes) that are as much as 4,000-5,000 feet high. That makes it
pretty easy to see from a distance.
