Re: [MBZ] Corona Virus in Tampa

2020-03-05 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
(Up Nort) We would see similar hysteria each time the wedder channel
predicted the week's "storm of the century" about a normal schnee
storm.   The sheeple would run out, clear the shelves of TP, bread, and
sometimes other stuff like milk, eggs and beer.    After 3 or 4 of
these, the apt dwellers no longer had space to stash any more crap, so
the feeding frenzies died off and the newbies figgered out they had
already survived 4 "storm of the centurys" in the past 4-6 weeks so they
may not need a truckload of TP for the next one.   THey never did figger
out that they were being played by the boobtubers.

This is non news anymore. Media hype, pure and simple. Nobody is dead,
so it means nothing. I grow tired of all the hysteria. Airlines
cutting routes and flights, scaremongering about sanitizing all the
interior surfaces and installing more machines to excrete alcohol
based sanitizers. School children furloughed for weeks on end, causing
all manner of issues for parents who will now be sending the kids to
daycare instead.

Amazon, Facebunk, and more companies closing down offices because
somebody sneezed or knew somebody who once had a cough. I have yet to
figure out why toilet tissue is in such great demand. Are the gastric
issues really that horrid that you have to empty the local Costco?

Yeah, I already saw the brag page.    I had one as a rental, and I

Re: [MBZ] How to drive a rental car

2020-03-05 Thread Clay via Mercedes
SWMBA rented a camry for the weekend visit to Fairbanks. Came with its own ice
scraper w/ brush (used a bunch) and the requisite block heater extension cord.
Seems there are outlets all over town as well as at the hotel, outdoor
parking, as covered parking seems to be viewed with a jaundiced eye. No power
unless you flip a switch from your hotel room to the numbered outlet.

That poor car did not enjoy getting lit off at -30 without any block warming.
Must have knocked a few months off the engine with that start. While filling
up before dropping it back off, I saw that there were car fluids in what would
normally be outdoor fridges. Like for sodas and snacks. At -30f that must
have been heated, as there was no way oil purchased out of the cold case was
going to be in any way a liquid at outside temps.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions with my 2004 Mercedes E320 windshield wiper issue.
Tried everything I am resigned to changing the "Combination Switch" so I
ordered the part (Genuine Mercedes $125.00).
Does anyone know of any installation videos for this repair they can
recommend?  I am also looking for a good repair manual or technical online
manual.  I have used Haynes manuals for years but they don't make one for this
car.

[MBZ] More on COV 19

2020-03-05 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Coronavirus screening may miss two-thirds of infected travelers entering
U.S.

*This is part of our Coronavirus Update
 series in
which Harvard specialists in epidemiology, infectious disease, economics,
politics, and other disciplines offer insights into what the latest
developments in the COVID-19 outbreak may bring.*

As many thousands of students prepare to decamp for warmer climes over
spring break, a Harvard epidemiologist warned that traveler screening may
catch just one in three symptomatic cases of COVID-19, the disease caused
by the new coronavirus, meaning there already could be hundreds of U.S.
cases that slipped through earlier screenings.

Marc Lipsitch , head
of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
’s Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics
, said Wednesday that recent modeling
compared the number of people likely exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms with the
number caught by traveler-screening programs, using the robust screening
program in Singapore as a global gold standard.

The result showed that most countries’ procedures miss two-thirds of
travelers exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, a finding that Lipsitch said may
explain the recent appearance of a cluster of cases in Washington, where 10
people have died. Lipsitch said travelers sick with COVID-19 likely arrived
in the U.S. four to six weeks earlier and simply were missed in screening,
leading to the Seattle area outbreak.

“I think you could have certainly hundreds, if not more, cases around the
United States by this point,” Lipsitch said. “The problem with giving a
firm number … is that there’s a lot of randomness in whether a particular
case does or doesn’t spark a chain of transmission.”

Speaking of SFO. I wonder what impact this virus is having upon the unhoused
who poop in the streets. No word of deaths or illness rampaging through the
tents and cardboard boxes populated with the infirm and drug addled. SEA has
as much of an issue as the Bay Area. I assume the virus will bloom well from
piles of untended feces as much as somebody sneezing. Far more people will
come in contact with rain washing virus on the street. Do not touch your shoes!

Re: [MBZ] 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 300TD $950 --weirdness

2020-03-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
This is weird, I took a snap of the VIN plate, it was raining yesterday
so I didn't look at it too closely.  Turns out it is a 97 not a 99 and
not a turbo.  I must admit in the rain I did not look too closely, just
to see that the intake manifold and such was off and there was work on
the injection pump.  Thinking about it I don't think it had a turbo and
it didn't register on me at the time.  I guess the 606.912 is NA.

I went to send the guy a msg and our message thread was deleted off my
phone from Messenger.  Weird.  I wonder if he deleted it. The posting
has been deleted too,  maybe someone came and got it yesterday or since
he has these offers he just deleted it.

Oh well, not sure I want a non-turbo, I guess I could swap the turbo
engine into it easy enough but not worth fooling with as I have this
other $500E300 here I need to swap the relays into and get it running.
The injection pump would not work on it from what I can tell.

So that's a no-go

I went and looked at it.  Really nice car, dark blue with the tan
interior in good shape, needs tires (I have a new set on the wrecked

top
torn apart and injector lines and what not to get at the injection
pump.  He says it is the fuel pump is leaking, was blowing fuel all
over.  His brother was doing the work on it then moved and never
finished it so it has sat.  This guy Nabil is moving so wants to
unload
it.  I offered him $500 cash right there but he said some other guy
offered him $600 and is coming Saturday so wants to honor that offer
(which is honorable, imagine that, a used car seller...) but if
the guy
backs out he'll take my $500. So we'll see.  I figure it would be
like
an afternoon of work to swap the bits over and get it back together.

Where? San Bruno? South San Francisco?

Understand that driving five miles in this area can take considerable time.
When is your flight out?

Worst case, you could visit Colma while you’re there. Massive cemetery that is

I have a meeting with a store that is just south of the airport Tuesday
morning. Might not be there more than a couple of hours, not sure. Might have
most of the afternoon free.

The cable car museum is not to be missed, IIRC its free too. You get to

If you only have a few hours you can’t go into the city, you’ll never get back
in time. If it’s a day while you’re there, sure, go into the city and do the
tourista stuff, Fisherman’s Wharf, get a Boudin bread brown with some clam

I used to ride the cable cars all the time when I lived there. Locals know to
go up the block from the turntables where the touristas cluster for hours and
just jump on there. Saves waiting around in line.

I loved riding the California Street line to Grant. That puts you right at
Chinatown, and the California Street line isn’t loaded with touristas like the
Powell St. lines are.

Train yourself to stop touching your face, practice good hygiene. Avoid going
out in public. You can take these measures and probably more to reduce the odds
against you.
