My limited experience is that the socket breaks loose from the PCB,
and eventually the connection fails. It can be repaired, but it's a giant

Re: [MBZ] OT - Pinball Blog

2020-04-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No, if you’re talking about the playfield. There’s no real repair you can do to
the old playfields short of a complete strip and re-do, which really doesn’t
make a lot of sense for a game like this. Cabinets can be repainted pretty
easily, but this one has a decent cabinet.

There’s a little bit of wear in some places and what’s referred to in the
pinball world as “planking” of the playfield. Thats’s when you see the parallel
lines in the paint that’s due to the wood swelling and contracting from
humidity over time. No fix for it. The best thing to do on something like this
is to just wipe the playfield down with naptha, which won’t affect the paint,
and wax it it with a good quality carnuaba based wax. That’s what I’ll be doing
tomorrow, I suspect.

I just measured the voltage on the power supply connector for our HP 2730
Elitebook and found the center pin also measures 19V to the outer sleeve. I
can't get the probes in to measure the center pin vs the inner sleeve.
YMMV

[MBZ] OT: Laptop repair

2020-04-06 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I have been using our HP 8460P Elitebook laptop to connect to church and
other meetings.

Yesterday I noticed the laptop was running on battery when I had the
power supply's DC cord plugged into the laptop. I measured the voltage at
the DC power plug and found the power supply was indeed outputting the 19
VDC it was supposed to.

I had originally thought the slender center pin was the power connection,
but I found there is an inner cylinderical ring which actually carries
the power along with the cylinderial ring on the outside of the plug.

Does anyone know what the slender center pin does?

Thanks,

up/dropped off some dry cleaning, swung by the Ace hardware to get a can of

Other than the hardware store, where I wore a mask and maintained separation, I
didn’t have to directly interact with anyone. Well, the doctor’s office I did,

I went to the doctor’s office this morning for an appointment, picked
up/dropped off some dry cleaning, swung by the Ace hardware to get a can of
naptha so I can start cleaning the playfield on the pinball machine, and went
by the bank.

Other than the hardware store, where I wore a mask and maintained separation, I
didn’t have to directly interact with anyone. Well, the doctor’s office I did,
but they were all gloved, gowned and masked.

2020-04-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I thought an '85 190D was a pretty good car. It had the same hp as a 240D but
weighed less. With the extra power I would expect a 240D 3.0 to be quite
driveable with a 4spd.
Someday I want to build a 240D 3.0T 4spd. With a turbo engine and 4spd
transmission the 123 platform would be really fun.

Our '82 240D/3.0 was a great car to drive, even in Los Alamos at
7000-7400'. There was no problem keeping up with traffic; one just
had to rev the engine up to near redline and there was plenty of power.
Admittedly, one did have to pay attention on freeway on-ramps and start
accelerating as hard as possible as soon as possible (just like our '89
BRV), but it was great. Nothing like our '72 220D/8, with its short first
gear.

It runs and drives and its only $1,400 dollars!
The bumpers alone are worth that.

I'm dubious of his claim. The car is, however, the right color for a hot
climate, unlike our Midnight Blue 240D/3.0.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1984 European 300D diesel clean az title RUNS AND DRIVES

2020-04-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’ve always had an affinity for hearses or ambulances as a design thing, not
for function. I think it started when I was a teenager and I wanted to buy a
really nice 1964 Cadillac hearse that belonged to a schoolmate’s dad who ran a
local funeral home. $500 bucks, it was in perfect condition, and was the
classic black on black. Dad said, “There’s NO way I’m having a hearse parked in
my driveway!!” so that was pretty much the end of that idea, and on I went to a
1959 barn door VW van. Yeah, he wasn’t much happier about that.

I doubt very much you would find a “true” W123 conversion in the States, since
anything was here would have to have been imported. I have wondered how common
they are in Europe.

Occasionally you'll see a conversion where someone has turned a W123
into something like a El Camino or Ranchero. I've thought one of those
would be fun if it were nicely done.

Well, you already have the '82 240D/3.0. Admittedly it's not "nice", but
it would not take too awful much work to repair the rear end and get it
on the road.

2020-04-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I never understood why the domestic W123 sedans didn’t have the manual sunroof
like the wagons did. That was the nicest thing as far as simplicity when it
came to options in those cars. Grab the “T” handle, twist and pull back.

2020-04-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Absolutely. My first MB was a 1980 300TD, so patience was an absolute virtue
when it came to performance. Not 240D level, but close to it.

I’m not besmirching the normally aspirated 617, but I will say that once you’ve
driven a turbocharged version, it’s darned difficult to go back.

Re: [MBZ] Max's COVID-19 vs H1N1 update

2020-04-06 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
 Weekly update.

Then and now:

H1N1: From 12 April 2009 to 10 April 2010, a study estimated that
approximately 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304
hospitalizations (195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (8868-18,306)
occurred in the United States due to pH1N1.

COVID-19 As of today, 6 April: ~337,000 cases, ~9600 deaths.

Plain Old Flu as killed ~24,000 Americans this season, estimated to top out
around 30,000.

On the good news front:

https://www.fda.gov.ph/fda-approves-rapid-antibody-test-kits-for-covid-19/

Next we need studies to determine the size of our population that has
already been exposed to the virus and recovered, and then we'll have a much
better model of the lethality of the virus (the denominator) and be able to
make some fact-based decisions about policy.

2020-04-06 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
Pretty much, yes. It’s only really noticeable when you’re sitting still or when
you first turn the key on to start.

It’s a stock Carter high pressure pump that was a little over $100 when I
bought mine. The only hack involved was to block off the overflow line, I
think. I’ve got pictures and some posts from another forum/list that explain
how I did it if you want them, just let me know.
