Yes. But if it drops below 10 VDC it could be either a starter
drawing too much OR a weak battery.Measure the voltage drop
across the wire from battery to starter to determine which.

Re: [MBZ] Question for Clay

2020-04-17 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Electric and NatGas are preferred methods of causing home heating in AK given
the cost of transport and storage for personal use. Most villages get one,
maybe two barges of products each year. You need to plan out your shopping
list months in advance to make sure your annual supply of anything arrives. Be
it a truck, skidoo, clothing, books, dry goods, whatever. #2 fuel does not
flow well at -40, so is mostly consumed by commercial generators.

Fairbanks does use #2, as they have limited access to NatGas. Electrons are
born out of coal in the Borough for the most part (UAF and local power co.)
The city is also on the Railbelt which just consolidated multiple geographic
power produces to reduce tariff and barriers to finally have a transmission
grid. Railbelt follows from Whittier and Seward along the railroad to
Fairbanks. Six utilities that mostly are using Cook inlet NatGas and some
renewables.

I do not know how the people in fly in cabins power up or heat. Most likely
some propane if they fly in their own planes.

[MBZ] Tie Rod/Steering Rack Boot R - W163/ML500

2020-04-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The boot on the driver’s side of the steering rack on the ML500 is torn, so I
want to replace it. I’ve got the MB kit along with a new tie rod.

It looks pretty straightforward, but I was wondering how much of a pig of a job
it is to get the boot installed on the steering rack. And yes, I know I’ll need
to get it aligned when I’m done. I’ll count turns/threads during removal and
get close, then it’s a quick 3 mile drive to my front end guys.

Anyone BTDT?

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] FW: CLASSIC, COLICTIBLE, 1966 MERCEDES BENZ 200D, 66K MILES, CLEAN TITLE, C

2020-04-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There’s a guy over by Orlando who had been listing a 1967 200 for sale at $12k,
later $9k on CL. Bone stock, all original, looked to be pretty solid. I tried
to talk to him a couple of times and make a case for what it was really worth
(maybe $5k, a little more depending on condition and provenance) and he
wouldn’t have it. Basically told me I was pulling numbers out of my rear
despite me giving him a bunch of comps that were recent sales, etc., etc. but
couldn’t justify his number with anything of substance.

It finally went away after three months on CL. Maybe he found that one person
who wanted one and was willing to pay his price, maybe it sits in the garage
still. I made the effort and tried to be as gracious as possible throughout our
interactions, but he just ended up being a total douche, sadly.

I think people have unrealistic expectations more often than not, mainly
because they let emotion get into the equation. This car had been around him
for some years so he was seriously attached to it. Sometimes that can work in
your favor, as it did in the case of the Finnie Bob helped me buy in Tucson. I
played the “I’m a good person and will treat your car as well or better than
you did” card, which not only cinched the sale but got it at a much lower price
because I wasn’t “some asshole” that would do terrible things to the car. And I
did what I said I would do, and the owner was very happy.

Heh. The seller still doesn’t understand that it’s been sold and sent to
Germany. I tried telling her and she just didn’t get it. I gave up trying, as
did her son in law who managed the sale.

Re: [MBZ] FW: CLASSIC, COLICTIBLE, 1966 MERCEDES BENZ 200D, 66K MILES, CLEAN TITLE, C

2020-04-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
$5k, maybe. The exterior looks pretty solid. Bumpers are a mess, but that’s not
uncommon.

The interior scares me. Dash wood is shot, dash pad is shot as well. What’s
weird is that normally the dash pad would be bad (cracked) but the wood decent,
or at least maybe a little bleached out. I have no idea what’s happened to that
dash wood.

Window rubber is all shot, typical for an unmolested example.

I can’t tell for sure, but it almost looks like there are masking lines around
the rear window trim, meaning a repaint. Not a bad thing, necessarily, but can
hide a lot of flaws. The trailing edge of the roof above the rear window looks
weird, like there might be rust. Could be the picture, too.

Where is the passenger side armrest and window crank? What’s the undercarriage
look like?

It’s the bottom of the line W110, which makes it worth even less.

There’s a reason why it’s been on the market for a year. The market is telling
the seller it’s not worth their ask.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: OT truck battery

2020-04-17 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
A FLAPS load tester does exactly that, by pressing a button it loads the
battery through a loaded heat sink device and measures battery "reserve
under load" on the meter...
I have one from Harbor Fright that works fine.. low cost, but handy to have
handy..
