Re: [MBZ] Re W211 Headlight Bulbs
One thing to remember with the halogen bulbs is you aren't supposed to touch them bare handed. The oils from your fingers get on the glass and severely shorten their useful lifespan. I have had silver star ultras last several years (800-1000 hours). They sell four different price levels of H7 from Basic to XtraVision to SilverStar to SilverStar Ultra. Each successive level represents an increase in lumens, color temperature and projected beam distance. But if you read the small print on the back of the bulb packages, you’ll see as the price (and performance levels) increase, the life expectancies decrease. Last night O’Reilly’s did not have a Basic or SilverStar Ultra available. I picked up a $17 XtraVision that has a life expectancy of 150 hours. I noted the $25 SilverStar is expected to last only about 83 hours. My moto is that if it goes in my body I won't buy it from Amazon. Supplements, cold/allergy remedies, contact lens supplies, etc. More and more I feel that way about car parts as well. It's just not worth the cost savings to have to re-do the job in a few months when the counterfeit part fails, even if they are willing to exchange it. I find O'Reilly, AutoZone, RockAuto etc. parts are pretty much low-end junk, though if they sell a brand such as Sylvania or Motorcraft I will likely believe that it's genuine. For a local parts source I usually go to NAPA. It's often a bit more expensive but parts (even their house brands) are decent quality, the counter people are clean and professional, and warranties have never been a hassle. I notice that almost all the good indy shops get parts from NAPA or the relevant dealer. For OEM online parts I'm using FCPEuro these days. I really liked the output and color of the Silver Star and Silver Star Ultras, but as you mentioned, I found the useful lives of these pretty lousy. At nearly $30/pair it was tough to justify replacing them on a regular basis. -D > On Oct 13, 2020, at 10:47 PM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes > wrote: > > On 2020-10-13 22:43, ned kleinhenz via Mercedes wrote: >> I have been buying Orsam-Sylvania H7 (halogen) bulbs from O’Reilly’s. > > Good. Accept it, Allen. I’ve got two boys (men, really), one of which has no interest in cars or even maintaining then, it’s just transportation from point A to point B. However, when tasked, he’s actually done his own repairs, but that was during a fairly short period of time a few years ago and has not occurred since. Not sure what the impetus was, but it apparently passed and has not returned. My youngest isn’t so much into cars, but he understands the value of maintaining his and is very good about conducting routine maintenance and even repairs when they’ve been necessary. He has a good grasp of how internal combustion engines operate and could probably figure most things out with a combination of research and tinkering. It’s clearly not something that’s a part of their DNA. I don’t fret about it too much. I just offer to assist when necessary and gladly offer insight and advice whenever they’re looking over my shoulder when they pass by in the garage and I’m working. Our generation was a lot different in so many ways, I just accept it as a generational thing and do my best to kindle anything in the way of interest when it pops up. -D > On Oct 13, 2020, at 8:54 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Oldest boy was driving the Focus home tonight. Re: [MBZ] 4Matic - Is It Worth It?
I have been driving the $675ML500 (well, $700 now that I spent $25 on a new ignition switch) a bit the last few days and I concur. It is bouncy and twitchy on bumpy roads (like my driveway), very stiff suspension, tall, short wheelbase. On smooth roads it is not bad but as soon as it hits a bump in the road or a dip or hole of some sort, it bounces all over again. I find it somewhat tiring to drive just from the fairly short trips I have taken. I recall the former wife's 164 being softer and less harsh in the steering and suspension, so it was fairly comfortable on longer drives. I went on a little ramble on Sunday, went down a dirt road to visit some friends, we had big rains Saturday evening so there were some large fairly deep pits filled with water, the sand gets soft but not really muddy, I was quite impressed with how it went right through those spots, I could feel the 4m pulling it along but there was no torque steering or anything like that as I have noticed on my 4WD trucks and the old Jeep Cherokee I had -- a lot more "agricultural" feel to the systems. Seems a pretty refined system. The 4m on the 211 E320 wagon is fairly not noticeable although I have driven it a bit through a wet field (grass) and I could feel it pulling right along on the wet grass, so that was gratifying. The 210 might have gotten mired up in that. -_FT On 10/13/20 9:13 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: I would agree with your observations on the W163. I would agree with your observations on the W163. Re: [MBZ] senior citizen owned and driven
Yeah. That. Or get it for $2500, drive it til it croaks, then dispose of it or swap in a new engine. --FT Sent from iPhone > On Oct 12, 2020, at 4:30 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes > wrote: > > Mitch beat me to it. > > Also until the oil cooler starts leaking and you have to replace the seal. > > -D > >> On Oct 12, 2020, at 4:18 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes >> wrote: >> >> Might be a decent deal? >> >> https://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/d/columbus-2006-mercedes-350/721167.html >> >> -- >> Allan Streib >> Indiana University >> Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering >> Digital Science Center | Intelligent Systems Engineering | FutureSystems >> >> ___ >> http://www.okiebenz.com >> >> To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ >> >> To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com >> > > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
