I had some assh*t behind me on the way to work one morning in a jacked up pickup truck with one of the LED light bars hung under his front bumper, which was about at my rear view mirror height. I kept brake checking him because he was riding my rear, so then I just slowed down so he would pass me. After he did I was blinded enough by his light bar that I had to use my brights until he was well ahead of me. They live in the neighborhood, so I made sure I got their license number and forwarded it to our community service officer (sheriff) that is responsible for the neighborhood. -D > On Oct 14, 2020, at 12:29 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Mitch Haley via Mercedes writes: > >> The two worst offenders were an idiot going down the freeway towing a 3 >> car slant with a giant off road 'LED light bar' on his grille, damn near >> blinded me with my door mirror. > And I think the phosphors emit at specific wavelengths as well. The typical white LED these days is a strong blue emitter, covered with a yellow phosphor. Phosphors are not really broad-spectrum light emitters, they're aimed at matching the sensitivity of the cones in the human eye. Unlike a tungsten filament, which is essentially a black-body radiator. Same effect, unless the surface reflecting the light has a particular absorption band that matches the emission band of the phosphor, in which case the light will tend to disappear. LEDs also have physical directionality as well, which could play an effect. The point is that a filament lamp basically has wattage as a variable, whereas LEDs have many more variables, none of which are really talked about or rated. I think, for nighttime illumination, that the blue light is largely wasted. That might have the effect of it seeming bright, but not very effective. Just a theory. Are your backup lights warm white, or cool white? (Cool == more blue. Yellow == a strong red and a strong green emission line.) -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

> Some LEDs try to approximate filament bulbs, They really can't, not even as well as HID replacements. No other lighting technology has the flux density of a filament lamp, an optical system designed for those MUST be sub-optimal with any other light source. HID discharge arcs are pretty small, but not as small as a filament in those sizes. Don't forget that all white LEDs are actually fluorescent lamps, with phosphors excited by other wavelengths. The emitting areas are relatively large, larger than any other illumination technology. Personally I'd like to kill whoever decided that 'projector' style headlamps were cool. Worst possible thing for nighttime illumination, ultra-intensity point source light. A bigger, more diffuse source would both give you better quality of light, and would be less blinding for oncoming traffic. Analogy: a single 100W clear filament bulb in the center of the ceiling. Now put a 1' frosted white globe around it. Re: [MBZ] New Car
Smoke Silver got used a lot by MBUSA. If you didn't want a Pearl Black 2.3-16 like mine, you could always get one in Smoke Silver like Chuck L's. (then Chuck got a 500E, in, you guessed it, Smoke Silver) RIP Chuck. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Oh "smoke" silver, not "silver." Gotcha. Same as my 560SEC I think. Not bad looking, just kinda bland. Good dealing, sounds reasonable. --FT On 10/14/20 9:25 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: It was advertised at $3200. I looked at it on Friday. It remained listed on CL through yesterday. It runs well, has plenty of get up and go, and everything works, even the CD changer. Ran a full set of diagnostics and got a lot of little “F”s, nearly all that were related to battery replacement. Cleared all the codes and none came back, so that’s good. The guy I bought it from put a conductor plate in it so I reset the adaptations on the transmission. Went through and made a “list ‘o’ parts” for my dealer guy, mostly soft stuff as the car doesn’t seem to have much in the way of needs. I’ve got to pull the cluster to change the bulb behind the odometer, as it appears to be out, and the turn signal stalk seems sort of stiff but the signals cancel, so something may be going on there I’ll have a look at. All in all it seems like a pretty solid car. I’ll Martha the heck out of it over the next few days and drive it some more to become more familiar with it. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- --FT ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I feel they were all white or silver, with a few random maroon ones that are all fading into a hideous two-toned scheme here in AZ. Re: [MBZ] Re W211 Headlight Bulbs
I never do. In fact, I use an alcohol wipe on them any time they’re handled just to be sure there’s nothing on the glass envelope. A box of those little single use squares is cheap as wine and they’re really handy in the shop for all sorts of things. -D > On Oct 14, 2020, at 1:03 AM, Rick Knoble via Mercedes > wrote: > > One thing to remember with the halogen bulbs is you aren't supposed to touch > them bare handed.
