I used to enjoy spending the weekend in a hotel if I had a video to make. We
used to do videos for a dance studio and a couple times my actual employer paid
for me to sit in a hotel room for a weekend editing the dance studio's showcase
that I would then sell to the participants and their families.
If I could shoot three or four Lantern Lab videos beforehand I'd definitely be
down for a few days in a hotel. It'd have to be a nice hotel though and my
dine-in budget would have to be significant.

Re: [MBZ] Detailing tools

2021-01-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You can do as much damage with a DA buffer as a rotary of you don’t know what
you’re doing.

However, using a DA is far easier for the novice and the resources for how to
use one are plentiful. The material you use is critical as well. I try ti stick
with 3M or Meguire’s materials, as they’re the most “honest” as I’ve found as
far as performance.

The best approach to cleaning up a finish is to start in an obscure area, like
the right rear door so if you screw up you don’t have to look at it every time
you walk up to the car, and begin with the least aggressive material and move
up gradually until you obtain the results you want.

The single stage paints that Mercedes used during this time period are
extremely forgiving and easy to work with. I’ve recovered finishes on cars of
this vintage that others have refused to touch.

Re: [MBZ] Detailing tools

2021-01-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I always use a speed controller when I use a buffer. It gives much greater
control.
If there is heavy oxidation, do multiple buffs. First pass with a more
aggressive cutting material. Then clean the car, inspect what you have
gained, and decide if you want to take another pass with an aggressive cut
or switch to the next step of finer cut material... ALWAYS use a clean pad,
and ALWAYS clean the car between passes.

Use a light touch on the buffer, let it float across the surface and let
the cutting paste do the work. Keep an eye on the pad, before it gets
loaded up with dead paint material, clean it or switch to a fresh one.

I am very Leary of using a powerful buffer because I have seen people burn
through paint. I was watching a video and the guy had a “dual action” buffer.
It was smaller and less power than a real buffer. I saw one for sale at harbor
freight.

I guess my question is what is a good buffer for someone that doesn’t want to
use a 3000 rpm buffer. I have used the cheap round orbital buffers from Wal
Mart. They are not powerful enough to burn through paint. But, they are also so
low speed, they can’t really tackle bad oxidation.

Re: [MBZ] Buffalo?

2021-01-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This time of year you’re going to be quarantined, as there’s probably 10 feet
of snow on the ground.

Just out of curiosity, is your employer paying you for the five days you have
to quarantine?

There are at least three versions of the linkage on the 240D, and some of
it is NLA. My 80 has the version with a level on the valve cover that has
an integrated piece of rubber (which was later moved to the firewall).
That piece is NLA, and mine is starting to tear. Might have to enlist the
3D printer in a repair.

Wrap it in aluminum foil. Or beer can. The usual problem is the rubber doodad
on
the firewall, or the plastic bushing. Or, in my case, someone who cranked the
stop
on the injection pump way out. You just have to look, and dive in.
