True, but a Google spreadsheet isn’t going to be easy to update while I’m at
the gas pump, or for that matter, even more so when it’s Mrs. Dan at the gas
pump. That’s why I like the convenience of the app. Everyone can have it on
their phone and it updates across all instances. For example, the youngest son
still maintains his car records in my database despite living 2,000 miles away.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dewalt of Milwaukee?

2021-02-09 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
You can buy lithium cells, the problem will more likly be in managing
the charge. They require some amount of "intelligence" when charging to
avoid overcharging, and also in use to avoid over-discharging. This
circuitry is sometimes in the battery pack itself, but you won't have it
if you just naively replace NiCd cells with lithium cells.

Not a bad price, but one should ask what it would take to make it perfect
mechanically and cosmetically.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dewalt of Milwaukee?

2021-02-09 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I have an old Milwaukee battery drill I really liked, it was very solid
and powerful.  It had a NiCad battery, one of which exploded on me while
I was using it high up on a ladder, Milwaukee sent me a new one
overnight.  I later saw a recall on them so got another battery too.
They are all dead now, I think I ordered some eBay specials that sorta
worked for awhile but never held charge for long.  I wonder if it is
possible to get a lithium replacement to cobble up something to keep
using the drill.  It's such a shame to throw out good equipment.

I like my 3/8" Makita corded drill, it's been abused and held up very
well. I agree on their batteries, the changes have been frustrating, but
I guess battery tech has evolved a lot in the past 10-15 years. I still
mostly avoid battery operated tools. Just another thing to go wrong, or
catch you out with a dead battery at the wrong time.

Looks like it's missing some wheel lug nuts, or is that just cosmetic

My old 19v Craftsman drill still works great but the battery has finally had
it. Replacing the battery is nearly the price of a new tool and with that I can
go lithium (my 19v is nicad) which will be lighter and more powerful and
support more tools.
I got a bunch of Home Depot gift cards from credit card points (10% off) and so
I'll be buying from there.
Thoughts?

To some extent, it depends on how hard you expect to use them or if you
are a tool snob. I have a number of Ryobi battery powered tools from HD
that have worked fine for me for years. I have 2 drills, one regular
drill and one hammer drill, a reciprocating saw, 2 impact drivers and a
random orbit sander. When I started buying them they were ni-cad but
they will use the newer lithium batteries too so I have switched to
lithium. I had to buy some batteries and a new charger but the tools
don't know the difference.  Lithium batteries are great.

I have a several Dewalt corded tools - random orbit sander, sabre saw,
big drill and small drill as well as a 16 gauge air nailer. I think the
only Milwaukee tool I have is a corded 90 degree drill. I think that
Milwaukee drill is better built than any of the Dewalt tools but I don't
know if that applies to the battery powered tools.

As, I think Dan said, you really need to stick with one brand so that
the batteries are usable on them all. I have had a number of other
drills, like three Makita and a couple of Mastercraft drills (house
brand drills from Canadian Tire) but was never very happy with any of
those. The batteries were unique and expensive and did not last very
well. Makita changed the battery a few times and it became more
difficult and expensive to get the one that I needed.

If you really want to go all out with an impact driver, there are some
very good ones out there. My mechanic son uses a cordless Snap-On impact
at work that is small but amazingly powerful.
