Re: [MBZ] Oil sucker

2023-02-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Respectfully, the dipstick guide tube does not go to the bottom of the oil
pan.
The dipstick itself does not actually touch the bottom of the oil pan.
You need a semi rigid tube that will insert through the dipstick guide tube
and is long enough to reach the bottom of the oil pan, then trim the bottom
of the tube as a 30 to 45 degree angle so it does not "suck down to the
surface of the pan" which would block suction of the used oil.
I suggest that you look at a piece of aluminum tube. Many ACE hardware
stores have sizes in 36in. lengths. Then, from the same store, look at
their bulk poly hose [choose hose that is rigid enough it does not suck
flat and that is clear, so you can see oil being pumped].
Next, go to Harbor Freight and buy one of their 12V fluid pumps. They are
vane type pumps internally, and will move as much as 300 gallons of fluid
per hr [rating]... Rig up some low voltage wire [irrigation stuff] with
battery clamps so you can clamp to the battery posts, get the right size
nylon fittings to adapt to the 12V pump, enough hose [again, I like clear
poly hose so I can watch what is happening.
Insert the aluminum suck pipe to the bottom of the pan, put the pump exit
pipe in a suitable container, connect the 12V pump, pump the old oil out..
When I'm done, I like to pump a couple of cups of mineral spirits through
the pump to flush out the old oil and keep it ready for next time. Connect
the exit poly hose to the pickup end of the aluminum tube, so it doesn't
leak while in storage... Bobs Your Unkle...
The price of 12V pump has doubled at Harbor Freight, over when I bought my
last one almost 20 years ago, but you can still be in business for less
than $100.. with all the tubing / fittings / wire / and clamps. You should
write it into your will, you won't wear it out in your lifetime, I'm
betting..

Umm - it has an " experimental airworthiness certification ". That's what
my homebuilt aircraft has, and the other one will get - until it has an FAA
type certificate it's still vaporware, even if it does fly.

Struts would be a $few100 unless you had some to pull off another car. Probably not worth the cost for replacements. If you did have some used then maybe. Or it could also just be the rear valve block leaking which would be an easy fix. --FTSent from iFōnOn Feb 7, 2023, at 10:03 PM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote:Or fix the struts and drive it until it quits. On Tue, Feb 7, 2023 at 9:59 PM Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes wrote:$400 parts car if you needed one

Great LA story:

When I was traveling for work I worked with a couple of WI natives that were
not very worldly. One of them was responsible for consumer products, i.e., RV
generators, so they got tapped to go to a big national RVIA show that’s held at
Dodger Stadium every year. Never having been to LA before, they were asking me
about places to see other than the obvious stuff like Hollywood.

“You gotta see the Watts Tower, man, it is s cool! On the National Register
of Historic Places, etc., etc. Don’t miss that for anything!”

Long story short, there was a very, very white guy wandering around East LA and
Watts trying to find the Watts Tower in a late model Lincoln Town Car rental.
(This was when airbags were just starting to be used, so we always got cars
with airbags like Lincoln Town Cars when we rented.) He said he had to pull
into a gas station to get directions and the locals looked at him like he was
nuts.

Hee. Amazing he didn’t get robbed or killed. He never asked me for travel
advice after that, either. Too bad, as I was trying to find someplace in
Compton to send him next time...

Costco synthetic 5W30 is what I am using these days. Anything like that should
be fine. 10W40, etc. there should be a chart in the manual somewhere showing
weights for various temperatures.

Get a polishing kit off Amazon for a drill. Velcro pads on a mandrel then
various grits of sanding discs from like 800 up to 5000 then use a foam pad
(these come in various degrees of coarseness) with some buffing compound then
polish wax for the final pass. They will look near new after an hour or two.
Get a spray bottle with water and a bit of dish soap to keep it wet and lubed.
Mask around the lens to keep from hitting the painted body bits.

I got a box full of the sanding discs and a kit with a coupla mandrels and foam
pads, wasn’t too much.

0w-40 or 5w-40 Euro spec Mobil 1 or equivalent.
Use a OE filter, they are cheap enough.
There *may* be a bit of milkshake under the oil cap, depending on what kind of
driving you do. Don't be alarmed, it's normal. It never seems to get hot enough
on short trips to evaporate the condensation.

I would just polish the lights. I'm not much for Chinese anything at this point.
