[MBZ] 123 old vs new axle shafts

2008-02-08 Thread Luther
A few weeks back, my right rear axle started knocking. Last Wed, I drained the
diff and pulled a good used axle shaft from my parts car. When I laid back
down under the coupe to remove the rear diff cover, I realized the left rear
inside boot was cut/torn loose 360 degrees around. RATS. I promptly called
Rusty and ordered 2 new axle shafts at $150/ea. Installed them today and will
now test drive.

Re: [MBZ] Tips on changing W124 motor mounts?

2008-02-08 Thread Luther
I use this tool:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947478000P?vName=Tools&cName=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&sName=Screwdrivers&sbf=Brand&sbv=Craftsman

and the 6mm allen hex bit to manage the low clearance on both motor mounts.
You might have to buy a complete set of hex bits that includes the various
metric allen bits. Otherwise, you'll need the right size allen and LOTS of
patience.

MM, breakfast pizza. Milk gravey for the sauce, topped with sausage, egg,

Or, fruit pizza. Cookie dough crust, a cream cheese fruit dip sauce, topped
with your favorite sliced fresh fruit.
Or, vegetable pizza. Regular crust, cream cheese vegetable dip sauce, topped
with finely chopped vegetables, and bacon/ham/turkey.

Re: [MBZ] OT Taking a Poll on Tailgating - Not a Rant

2008-01-30 Thread Luther
Tailgating is the quickest way to get under my skin when driving. I don't care
if you do stupid things when driving, but tailgating starts to endanger my car
and my passengers. That is crossing the line

Uusually I drive 5-10 MPH over posted speed limits on the interstate and very
much dislike someone riding my bumper at 80 in the left lane. I use aggressive
tactics when the person comes within 1 car-length. This includes abruptly
slowing to match the speed of the car in the right lane. This speed will be
maintained until the offender backs off at least 2-3 car lengths at which point
I will speed up and finish passing the car on the right. Flashing your brights
at me will lengthen the time taken to move ahead and over to the right.

Another thing I tend to enjoy is closely watching the tailgater for that
impatient move to pass me on the right. As soon as they look over their
shoulder and make that move to the right, my right turn signal comes on and I
"innocently" make my move to the right lane. This always adds to their level
of anger and increases their blood pressure.

My previous '83 SD would spit a bit of wet substance out the rear under full
throttle and that was a WONDERFUL anti-tailgating feature. More than once a
person had backed off my bumper while running their wipers to remove this
mist

bumper

Checking your jumpers is like checking fuses. Start with the basics, then move

Re: [MBZ] OT, computers again

2008-01-28 Thread Luther
My shopping is based on the warranty and quality.
Antec cases and power supplies-some have 3 year warranties, lower quality have
1year warranty.
AMD-get a processor that is boxed with heat sink and fan, they have a 3 year
warranty.
ASUS motherboards have 3 year warranties, most other brands have 1, a
few have 2
both ATI and NVIDIA video cards have 1 year warranties

Kaleb, you'll love this advise, you just need to sit there on your lazy
butt and
comparison shop. Use Google, Tigerdirect, Newegg, and Zipzoomfly (my personal
favorite for price/shipping/customer service), and others you feel comfortable
doing business with. Just browse, read reviews, and make your decision that
way.

My recent upgrade was:
Asus M2N-E SLI MoBo (3 yr warranty)
Corsair TWIN 2GB memory (lifetime warranty)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core running at 2.0Ghz (3 yr warranty)
That cost me about $260 shipped.

I already had:
80GB Western Digital SATA hd (5 yr warranty)
HP DVD+/-RW (out of warranty)
Antec Case/power supply (out of warranty)
monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc (out of warranty)

I still need to upgrade my video card. I'm watching eBay for a NVIDIA SLI
8500xxx PCI-E card with 512MB ram. Might even add a widescreen LCD to
that....

I purchased my last batteries from Advance Auto and its made by Johnson
Controls with a new lable stamped on it. Comes with a warranty of 3 full years
and 5 pro-rated years, you can't beat it for less than $70.

Re: [MBZ] fast driving was Re: (Not so) Smart

2008-01-21 Thread Luther
Soon after purchasing my '83 300SD back in 2003 I was on a trip back from
Nebraska during the Saturday night/Sunday morning time, somewhere in southern
Missouri on Hwy 71. The pedal was to the floor...cruising along the LONG
multi-mile stretch that is flat and straight. I was somewhere in the low
triple digits, but I'm not sure exactly where since the dash light fuse had not
been replaced yet. I noticed a pair of headlights in my rearview mirror, and
about a minute or so later they were closer. Sure enough, the blue lights came
on and I rolled to a stop. The state trooper asked for
license/registration/insurance and didn't say anything else. He went back to
his car, and returned about 60-90 seconds later. He handed me my info back and
said this,
"I know how easy and fun it is to get a big and heavy car cruising like that,
but we have a lot of deer in this area. So, slow it down and have a safe
morning."
I about had a heart attack I was so shocked.

Re: [MBZ] 123 coupe electrical confusion

2008-01-13 Thread Luther
At the MBCA tech gathering yesterday, it was suggested that there probably is a
bad trace or ground on the cluster circuit board. There was a broken ground
that we resoldered last time the cluster was out, the fuse hasn't "blown" since
then, but it has been flaky. I'm gonna pull the cluster back out and carefully
look at it.

[MBZ] 123 coupe electrical confusion

2008-01-07 Thread Luther - laptop
Subject car: '82 300CD
The fuse for the right front markerlight, right tail light, dash lights,
and headlight warning buzzer (key buzzer works fine) has blown 4 times in
the last 6 months. The most recent time was about 3 weeks ago (or so I
thought...). Last night I opened my door and the buzzer sounded at me.
WHAA? Tonight all lights are working as intended. I'm totally
confused at this. It's also dawned on me that my radio reception might be
diminished when the dash/marker/tail system is not working. It blows a
brand new copper alloy fuse just as easily as the crappy aluminum fuses I
am using until the problem is resolved.

Any ideas?? TIA all.

Re: [MBZ] bcs dissatisfaction

2008-01-05 Thread Luther
Do you remember that the second time Missouri played OU? The score was 38-17
and OU is the only REAL team that you played this year (2 losses), the
rest are
over-rated fluff. Did you see the way your former opponent Illinois was
manhandled by USC? Did you see the same feat that Hawaii suffered at
the hands
of Georgia? USC, LSU, Georgia, Ohio St and W.Virginia (I was impressed
Lt.) are
the top teams in the nation, no questions. Anyone else in the BCS games were
just lucky to be there.

I am not bitter. Arkansas played the worst game of the last 2 years against
Missouri. The first drive of the game was ALMOST what our offense is
normallycapable of, and it seemed that we handily moved the ball the length of
the field on your defense for that drive. You say you stopped D-Mac
and Jones?
Sure, the rest of the team never stepped up around them. If they would have
played HALF as good as they are capable, this game would have been a
battle. If
we play as well as we did against LSU, you would have lost by 2 TDs or more.
Arkansas had a coach who didn't give a damn about the future of our
program and
that hurt. The coaches we had were lame ducks, and probably will never have
their own head coaching jobs anywhere in the future.

Re: [MBZ] bcs dissatisfaction

2008-01-01 Thread Luther - laptop
Correction. Arkansas failed to show up. Missouri really didn't look that
good. I was 7 rows from the field. The fans showed up with heart and
desire, the players acted like they did, but didn't show it after the
12:00 mark in the first quarter. I'm ashamed to be a Hog fan today.

If Missouri would play USC, Georgia, LSU, or Ohio St., they would loose by
21 or more. I think OU would play a descent game against one of those top
4 schools. Outside of those top 5 schools, no one else holds a chance.

Re: [MBZ] radio wiring nightmare

2007-12-31 Thread Luther - laptop
This was a recent project in my coupe, the installation of a different
radio and bypassing the fader switch without cutting speaker wiring.
First, snag some speaker wiring out of a parts car, cutting it at the
radio, and disconnecting it at the connectors next to the shifter and in
the dash under the speakers. This project ran simultaneously with
odometer and temp sensor foam tube repair.

[MBZ] Home remedies

2007-12-25 Thread Luther
AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES

1. When choking on an ice cube, simply pour a cup of boiling water down your
throat. Presto! The blockage will instantly remove itself.

2. Avoid cutting yourself slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold
while you chop.

3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs.. about lifting the toilet seat by using the
sink.

4. To treat high blood pressure: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few
minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.

5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from
rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you will be
afraid to cough.

7. You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and
should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

8. When confused remember, everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

Daily Thought:

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES.
NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED
DOWN THE STAIRS.

Pogo Moose Incident - Fairbanks , Alaska

"They were laying new power cables which were strung on the ground
for miles. The moose are rutting right now and very agitated. He was
thrashing around and got his antlers stuck in the cables. When the
men (miles away) began pulling the lines up with their big equipment,
the moose went up with them. They noticed excess tension in the lines
and went searching for the problem. He was still alive when they
lowered him to the ground. He was a huge 60 inch bull and slightly

Biodiesel has more oxygen in it than petro diesel. BioD has about 20% less
energy (depends on the base stock) than PetroD. Blends from B20-B70 will
usually see more fuel efficiency than pure PetroD or B100 due to the more
complete combustion of the fuel blend. Higher than B70 will usually see less
fuel economy.

Re: [MBZ] Funny Noises

2007-12-14 Thread Luther
I've repaired the odometers on two 123s now. Each time I lightly nick
the shaft
under the first gear with a razor blade. Nick it about 5-8 times around the
shaft and the problem goes away.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pennzoil Platinum rebate

2007-12-13 Thread Luther
Ya know, I hardly see any junk snail mail anymore. Guess someone(s) got the
picture since I was sending EVERYTHING they sent me (and more added in) back to
them in their on their s. I love to open junk mail, fold it all up, pack
it back into their SASE, add a few goodies (paper clips, paper, sand, etc) and
mail it. :D
