Elon had to lower the price of new cars due to competition, which then tanked
the value of used Telsa's. He was counting on the price of new ones always
going up.

Re: [MBZ] New heat pump

2024-01-15 Thread MB list etc via Mercedes
Our ground source geothermal heat pump is still working great 10 years in. It
has two 300 ft. deep wells with ABS pipe looped down and up through both holes.
It paid for it's self in a little less than 7 years in reduced energy bills.
The main circuit board and thermostat were replaced under warranty not too far
in (it was a new model at the time). We have the emergency backup heat strips
disconnected, and the heat pump is keeping us warm in sub-zero temps just fine
- not running continuously.
At our previous house, we had to replace the 1978 air source heat pump after
about 25 years. The dog peeing on the outside coil didn't help.

Our microwave had the first example I've run across of failing "on". You put
food in it, started the cooking cycle, then the bell sounded and it turned off.
When you open the door, it turns on again. The only way to turn it off is to
un-plug it. Now we have to leave it unplugged, open the door, put the food in,
close the door. plug it into the wall outlet, clear the nanny, set the time and
push go. when it's done, unplug it, open the door and remove the food without
frying your hand.

Yes, something broke and latched the wrong way in the door latch mechanism, and
might be repairable, but I don't have the bandwidth to deal with it and SWMBO
wants to play with a small convection oven, so a new Panasonic should arrive
tomorrow. We'll see.

We now use a printing service - cheaper than replacing dried up dead inkjet
printers. We use mpix.com, but there are several good ones. Maybe one will let
you send/order a print from your phone? (I use a real camera for anything that
will get printed).

We gave up on inkjets, both large and small and now have a cheap laser printer
that nicely tolerates long periods of dis-use. We got a Brother with a
scanner/copier which get's almost as much use as the printer function. YMMV.

Re: [MBZ] OT Medicare Questions

I forgot to add that if you don't enroll in part D initially, you have ta pay a
penalty for every year you didn't have it if you try to get it later - totally
a money grab by the insurance industry. There is no government part D, it's all
individual insurance companies - you have to find the plan that gives you the
lowest prices on the drugs you take, and not all drugs are covered by any one
plan. Worthless system.

Good luck with that - in my experience, shark bite fittings don't reliably hold
60psi water, much less 100+ psi of air though I've never tried it.

All the meat (smoked ribs and a turkey were cooked/smoked in the smoker
attached to the wood burning clay oven, as usual. Some re-heating and cooking
was done in the gas grill, the rest was cooked in/on the first year Maytag dual
oven electric range (25-30 years old?). I think we have most of the bases
covered for cooking, though we didn't use the Coleman stove.

When we had kids, we declared that "Christmas is where the kids are", which was
our house. of course. We would sometimes go to Dad's for Thanksgiving, but
Christmas was never anywhere else. Now the Grandparents are gone and the kids
grown with extended families of their own, but our son )the youngest) is still
in the area and he and our DIL are here often. We had the DIL's family here for
Thanksgiving dinner - the first gathering of more than four of us since before
Covid (nine of us). It was nice to share a great meal with everyone.

Can you open the sensor housings and resolder the connections to the LEDs and
sensors? Perhaps this is why it was for sale in the first place? Maybe find
another set of sensors on eBay or somewhere? Not by tomorrow, but ...

Re: [MBZ] Initial review of 124 after 1500 miles.

2023-10-02 Thread MB list etc via Mercedes
Bear in mind that the octane rating is for the worst case scenario - hot
engine, mashing the pedal to the floor from a stop - to prevent detonation.
Modern engines with "knock" sensors will retard the ignition when detonation
(knock) is detected to keep from grenading the engine. The retarded ignition
will reduce power some.
Higher octane than is required to prevent detonation is wasted money, nothing
else. I don't know if your MB adjusted the timing for detonation with lower
octane fuel of not.
Another factor in the difference in mileage between fills can also be road
gradient - it takes less fuel to travel on flat roads than it does to go up
hill. I expect that your trip out was mostly downhill, so should have gotten
the best mileage, therefore the highway driving did the engine some good.
As always, YMMV.

IIRC, heat also helps loosen rusted threads, though I guess the Kroil will burn
off now if you hit it with a torch. Could make a mess of things. If it comes to
it, if it breaks off, drill it out and use an "EZ-out" (or whatever they call
those things) to get it out and replace it with a new bleeder valve.

It comes installed on the HD from the seller. I clone it to the SSD, make sure
it boots, then format the HD. I use AOMEI Backupper for the cloning. YMMV. FYI

The difference in cost between a 182 at 150mph vs anything that will cruise 200
(saving 30 minutes for Curt's flight) will cost you a LOT of money. I can fly
the 182 out of a 1200 foot grass runway comfortably. Few 200 MPH planes can do
that. I suspect that Curt might be able to clear 1200ft of relatively flat
straight ground for a runway ---
