In Washington State tailgating is a gross misdemenor (Road Rage Law) which can get you jail time, so is a number of other agressive driving tactics... There have been recent deaths from tailgating and running people off the road and deaths from such... also included in the Road Rage Law is driving in the passing lane on the freeway while blocking traffic behind.. this is what really irritates me.. I wish this was a very stiff penalty and enforced whenever possible, as I believe this causes the most roadrage, and of course, caused much slowed traffic in busy areas... [MBZ] Questions about 87 300SDL
I have been trying to get through to this site, but my messages keep coming back as unable to deliver... Anyways, I test drove an 87 300SDL yesterday... I was quite dissappointed at the total lack of throttle response, extreme sluggishness. This car had no power at all, to the point of being dangerous... this car would not be able to get out of it's own way in case of an accident. I am quite familiar with MB diesels... I have had 2 123 body style 300D's and I currently have an 87 300D that the timing chain broke... so... I'm searching for another MB diesel. Are the SDL's that sluggish? I knew that they weren't as quick as the 300D, but I thought they were only slightly less powered? Was there something wrong with the car I drove? If this is a representation of the 300SDL, then I will stick with the 300D. [MBZ] Any good Mercedes diesel (603) mechanics in Central Washington (State)?
I have a 1987 300D that died on me last Sept. It has about 300K miles. I am suspecting a broken timing chain, (or primary chain, or flywheel problem). My wife was driving it on the highway, she said it all of a sudden lost power and she could barely hear a clanking or clicking noise, but that it was not loud at all I have turned the engine over, and it seems to turn almost twice as fast as normal, like there is much less resistance... I have just put new brakes (front/rear), new power stearing box, etc. so if it won't cost too much, I would like to get it fixed... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... --Forwarded Message Attachment--From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Any good Mercedes diesel (603) mechanics in CentralWashington (State)? (RICHARD FIne)Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2008 17:41:36 -0800 Hello,As far as checking for the timing chain, I have already previously checked the cam lobes... they do not move... but, as I stated in my first post, it could also be the Primary chain, flywheel ect. not only the timing chain... that is why I was asking if anyone knew a good mechanic in Central WA... Rick You can check for a broken timing chain by removing the oil filler cap and looking at the cam while someone turns the key to turn the engine over - if the cam turns - you should see 3 or 4 of the cam lobes pretty easily. If nothing is rotating the TC is likely broken. Unfortunately, a lot of damage to pistons/head/cam/etc can make repair pretty expensive. A used engine might be a better option of finding another similar 300D and use yours for parts. Don't know if you have been on this list for long, but there is some regular maintanence that needs to be done to monitor the chain condition. The stretch of the chain can be measured on a regular basis and once it reachs 5-8 degrees (? IIRC) stretch it's time to have the chain replaced as it affects the engines performance and fuel mileage. [MBZ] 1987 300D turbo dies on way home...
Hello, Thanks for the previous responses to my post.. My question: As posted earlier, my wife drove my car home, she said it ran out of power and she slowly came to a stop at the side of the freeway. After getting the car towed home, I charged the battery, then tried turning engine over... The engine turns over much quicker I then marked the serpentine belt to see if it would change position when engine (or starter) was engaged the belt did not move... Does this mean that the drive chain (the chain below the timing chain) is broke? I would find it quite coincidental that the starter would go out at the same time, and, it is not the same as the noise the starter makes when it does not engage the flywheel... I believe the starter is engaging the flywheel, but, that it does not have alot of resistance... If this is the case, is this a big job (engine removal) or is worth fixing? Thanks, Rick ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] 1987 300D turbo dies on way home...
Hello, I'm having a very tough time, my wife had to leave me in a neighboring town (my father is in Hospital dying a slow death, he has Reumatoid arthritis, that when it was brought under control, spread to his lungs, he only has a day or so to live) as she had to get home and work the next day. On the way home, she said that the car just started to drive very slowly until she came to a stop on the side of the road. I have had the car towed home, and upon my first inspection this morning, I inspected to see if any loose vacuum lines.. but found none, I just changed out the fuel filters about 4 months ago, and what I did notice was that when the engine is turned over, it turns over much faster than normal, I then checked to see if the pulley belt was moving when turned over and found it does not. I know that it probably means the starter selinoid is not engaging, but, I find that strange and too coincidiental... any helpful suggestions on what to look for? My car has been trouble free for years and years and years.. it has about 300,000 miles on it. I really need this car fixed, as I'm needed back with my Mother and family (I went home for a day) my Father won't make it much longer, and this is something very horrible for my Family to go through, my Father is up to 20 liters of Oxygen and the machine can't go any higher, he is slowly suffocating and probably will not make it past tomorrow... You suggestions would be greatly appreciated... [MBZ] Any problem using 6 rims on 1987 300D turbo.... clarification
As I stated in my origional email The rest of the numbers all match, the only difference is the .5. The numbers on the 87 300D : 6.5JX15H2 ET49 The numbers on the 6 rims that I bought: 6JX15H2 ET49 I assumed the only difference between these rims, since the numbers are exact is the width of the rim? Too much pressure on the journal on the compression stroke, not enough film strength, even for a synthetic like Mobil 1 The difference between dino and synthetics is huge, the difference in cold viscosity of synthetics is fairly small. I believe the 0 weight oils are intended to give small gasoline engines a bit better milage from lower oil pump resistance, not something I'd like to try in a diesel! Just my opinion. I tend to use 5W40 or 5W50 Truck and SUV or 15W50 Mobil 1 in the summer and 5W40 in the winter, but if I need to change the oil and can only find 15W50 in the winter, I use it. Hard starts are usually not helped by lower viscosity oil unless you have fairly high viscosity dino in the crankcase -- I've seen an engine that simple would not crank at all in the winter with 50 wt in there to hide a bad bearing Peter

[MBZ] Leaking steering gear box, install seal kit, or replace?
Hello, I have a 1987 300D turbo with around 300,000 miles I just started losing fluid in my power steering and traced it to the steering gear box. I priced them online, and will cost around $450.00 to $500.00 to replace. I also see that I can purchase a seal kit for around $35.00. Has anyone replaced the seals in their gear box? Is it too involved for an average do it yourselfer? Anyway, assuming nobody can look up the belt length you need you could always take a string and run it around the new path and measure the length. Try to put the tensioner in the normal place first, or account for it somehow. You might be able to use string to measure between two fixed points along the belt path that includes the AC pulley, then stretch a chord that excludes it, then take the difference and subtract that from the stock length. However, I don't think that the 'load' of an uncoupled AC compressor would even be noticeable at the fuel pump. Certainly not enough to even pay for the new shorter belt, IMHO. -- Jim
[MBZ] Anyone install a towing hitch on their 124 chassis? Need some guidance on how?
I have a 1987 300D turbo that I want to install a towing hitch to pull my boat trailer (light 14' inflatable w/30 HP outboard). I am planning to use my car for day fishing trips, and only use my truck for overnight/ extended trips as it only gets around 10 miles per gallon. I first looked underneath the rear of the car, and could not see any secure way to install a hitch. I then went to the local U-Haul center, and they could not find a correct match on there computer for a 1987 300D turbo (computer had it listed as a 2 door), and did not give a listing for a hitch for the car. I'm sure someone has found a way to install a hitch on their model 124 car that works. Your help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks... As the name would suggest, it accepts the ash tray after you've emptied it, etc. Yes, on the left is that copper colored tab that scrapes along the side of the ashtray when you pull it open - but - I think what it scrapes against at this point is plastic. There must be a metal piece that comes up over or under the plastic side of the ashtray to meet that tab - and it must come with the lighter base. Brian On 5/19/06, Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jim, it appears to be a tab that is mounted to the console. It appears to be copper. I'll have to go downstairs and look more closely at the side of the ash tray and see if there's a metal track on it for the tab to slide along. I believe it does make contact when the ashtray is pulled open past a certain point. So overall, it just seems that there ought to be some sort of cradle for the lighter to plug into. Instead, there is just sort of a division in the plastic space there where it apparently used to be. And there are a few small square or rectangular holes there - to accept plastic snap-type hooks?? I'm guessing now. Yes, mine is the woodgrain type. Sheesh, if it wasn't for my woodgrain, I'd have nothing but the star in the hood to allow me to claim that I have a luxury car. Or am I correct in assuming that if I get the unit that pulls out by depressing the metal tab, I have gotten all that I need, and I can simply place it in, and the lighter should be operational provided none of the electric circuit has been altered? Sounds right. Use a meter to see if the metal track (or is it a tab that hits a track on the ashtray?) is 'hot' with the key on. [MBZ] 1987 300D turbo timing chain replacement questions....
I asked for a bid from my local Mercedes dealer (Yakima, WA) to replace the timing chain in my 1987 300D turbo, 300K miles. The first response I got was that it was not needed unless the timing chain was making lots of noise. I then told him, that as far as I knew, I should replace it because of the high mileage, that I didn't want to risk destroying the engine in case of failure. I asked for an estimate, and after 3 or 4 phone calls and 2 days time, he finally gave me one. He then, changed his story, telling me because of my mileage, I needed to change all the gears, sprocket, and related parts. The price of the parts was going to be $1200, and the labor was going to be $800. He then went on to tell me that all the years he had been with the dealership (he is the service manager, and has been there a long time) he has only known of 2 or 3 such replacements. I told him, well, I guess I won't be needing the work done, as, I surely was not going to be taking my car here. What I'm asking, is, would it be difficult for me to change the timing chain myself? I am somewhat mechanically inclined, and could take the car to a different shop to do the fine tuning of the timing and fuel pump. Is there any valve work that I should also consider while doing this? I have all the shop manuals for the car. Anyone know of other good shops in the Yakima, Washington area that I could trust working on my 300D?
